Carl is talking about most people in churches in Britain today. They enjoy the church services, but they're basically atheists. Go into any random church in Britain and start talking about the risen Christ and people will start avoiding you, thinking you're insane. They go because it's a tradition, not because they actually believe

@@jonlannister345 Not sure how that's hard to understand. I'm catholic myself and attend mass and believe Christianity is a net good for humanity, believe in God, and think Jesus was certainly a walking miracle. I'm skeptical about some of the nuances in the bible mostly because humans, not God, have translated it a few times over the years and I know sometimes things are lost in translation. But that aside...
The really passionate bible-thumper types are definitely off-putting to me. I think there's a reason why the catholic church educates their priests before encouraging them to try and preach to people because some rando doing it isn't ideal for many people (though there are those who don't care).
I mean Jesus himself said.. I can't remember the exact words so don't nag me on it. But there's somewhere where he mentions that people should worship in their own way in privacy outside of church. So I don't think it's strange to think some people prefer to keep some elements of their faith to themselves.

Hitchens walked us to the top of the hill, then at the eleventh hour he chose his pieces of silver. He saw the glimmer of victory and was terrified.
This is the problem with contrarians and prophets of doom - they seek vindication not victory. Indeed victory is death to them.
Carl has the same problem with Christianity many people our age have. They have been brought up to believe everything stems from personal belief. This is a fatal error. For most people the practice comes first and faith comes later. This has always been the case, even from the beginning. St Thomas is a much better example to most people than St Paul.

True, but to vote for one in whom you do not believe to stop another in whom you believe a bit less is nothing short of political cowardice which ensures it’s one or the other for ever.
Peter Hitchens joined the worship of the two party state when he advocated for this and I lost respect for him. I must say he’s far too miserable for me anyway.
It’s not tactical voting by the populace it’s a tactical strategy by those who support the status quo.
However one sees politics we should vote for the party which aligns with our beliefs and let the cards fall where they will.

I don’t believe Christians are called to be pacifists and political solutions are important. But casting the devil out of the house and not filling the house (your life or the society you live in) with the spirit of God will only lead to 7 worse demons coming and taking over the house (an analogy Jesus used). We need to prioritize the fight for hearts and minds as Ephesians 6 says, while not neglecting the necessary policy changes that go along with that.
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

I'm also a fan of Edward Dutton - who seems to be another atheist who understands that religion has a certain amount of evolutionary utility that aids survival. And it's also picked up many useful traits over the centuries - like monogamy, the foundation of stable families.

The Christianity thing is interesting. I'm also an atheist, who matured into my political world-view whilst imbibing Dawkins, Hitchens et al.
My beef with religious people was never about what they believe. It was only ever about them trying to impose those beliefs and values on others in ways that restrict their freedoms.
Take that issue away, and I have far more in common with American Christians, than with anyone on the political left.

    • @chick_nuggs9318

Many people who claim to be Christian, do not know Christ. True Biblical Christianity isn't just a belief system, it is an entire way of life.
Christ calls His people to die unto themselves and follow Him. So a Christian cannot (and should not) separate their faith from their way of living. Part of that way of living is to call others to repent of their sins and belive in Jesus.
Everyone has sinned against God and are at enmity with Him. Jesus is the only way to salvation. That is an offensive idea to people unless they are regenerated by Christ.
I implore you, please, seek God now while He may be found. Before it is too late.

It's time now to put feeling aside on this aspect of life and wear it as a part of us. For continuity and to keep a foundation as our civilisation crumbles around us. I was once standing on a railway platform in Oxford, and suddenly, Peter Hitchens was standing right beside me.
I turned and said " Peter, Peter Hitchens".
    Hello, I said.
I said that although I wasn't right wing I admired his speaking out against lockdowns.
He looked gobsmacked and stared at me without saying a word for what seemed like an ages.
I then said " I ve respected your work for years and of course that of your late brother". He then gave this really warm smile, that sort of threw me off a little.
I walked away and looked back and he was still standing there looking in my direction, a bit buffudled if truth be told.
The impression I got was of someone who thinks nobody likes him or cares what he thinks. When I put forward some positive energy he seemed like he didn't know how to take it.
Anyway, that's for you Hitchens fans out there.
