    Hi TGV, I tought I would share with the viewers what my borthers and I did.My mother wanted to melt my late father's wedding ring down and get it made into a ring for each of us 3 brothers. I thought this was a great idea and wanted to take it a step further.On the first ring (oldest brother) the first letter from my father name was engraved on the front and his date of birth on the inside. So it was N, and 25/05/xxOn the second ring (middle brother), my father's middle name initial was engraved and his date of marriage. So A, and 12/12/xx.On my ring (youngest) is the initial of our surname and his date of passing. So H, and 07/10/XX.These three rings create a set: NAH, 25/05/xx - 12/12/xx - 07/10/xx...and are a great tribute to our father. I hope this gives some viewers another way to start a legacy ring.

    I don't have any signet ring in my family, but my Grandfather was a pretty famous jeweler in Naples, Italy. So, today I have some of his creations that come directly from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. They are unique rings (and other jewels) completely hand made and the most beautiful one is a lion's head that comes out from the front of the ring, it's like a real sculpture from gold. It's not a signet ring but it's still a unique and distinctive way to define yourself, even because that's the only existing ring made in that way. Should I put something this special on my finger, TGV?
    As always, great great video!
    Thank you for sharing these fantastic rings.
    Take care my friend,
    Best regards,
    Michele from Italy.

    Very good video. Recently I have embarked on discovering my own genealogy. I was amazed to find that I am a direct descendant from the house of Plantagenet. I was more amazed that most all of my family knew and just elected never to bring it up. I intend to have an Oxford style signet ring made to reflect these findings. If at the very least to own as a remembrance.

    In Switzerland, every family (noble or not) has a coat of arms and every adult and able bodied man can wear the familys emblem. This is due to swiss long mercenary history and is made so swiss mercenaries can identify themselves when fighting for opposing armies. This includes (in the middle ages) shield, tabard, bannier and the signet ring (usually on the right ring finger). Only the ring remains today and is either worn on the right ring finger or on the left ring finger when married.

    I bought a class ring after completing University and it was in a drawer for years. It's only after 15 years that I have taken it out and worn it with pride of my accomplishment and my alma mater. It is an Oxford style and fits well on my right ring finger, opposite my wedding ring. However am considering getting a smaller classier signet that symbolizes both family and education made for my pinky to be worn on the left pinky (in honour of tradition).

    The 9k gold looks more rosish on camera. I'm not sure if it's because they add copper or brass to heighten the red in the gold to offset the whiteness from platinum and silver, or if gold just looks more red when combined with whiter metals.
    I love the rings though. The Oxford style is sleek and classy. Of your grandfather's I love the traditional one with the stone. I actually inherited a signet ring from my uncle who never married, he had nothing engraved on it and it's way too big for me (he had it made to get over his arthritic fingers when he got sick). But now I know what it is.

    A signet ring isn't something I had considered before. Yet I like the idea of it being an heirloom, much like the secondary reason I've started collecting watches. I particularly like the idea of having a family crest. Hmmm, I'm going to give this some more thought. :)

    @brendenk7520 6 лет назад +3

    Be very careful guys, just because a coat of arms has your last name attached to it, that doesn’t mean it’s yours. The only way you can claim it, is if you were given the CoA by a family member. In the English isles and Spain, you have to earn things for your crests and arms. In the US, you can design your own without restrictions.

    • @AlexanderDiviFilius
      @AlexanderDiviFilius 6 лет назад

      You don't have to earn it as such, as you can purchase one if you are a citizen of the commonwealth (not sure with Spain), though you still have to design it. You are dead right that just because a coat of arms is registered to someone with your family name, that it's not therefore yours, unless you can prove that you are the rightful claimant, above any others who share your name. Besides, it's more accurate to have a unique heraldic achievement anyway. Regardless, the charge on your achievement can be the same as your ancestors (or really whatever you want), so you should be alright in the UK, where all you need is the charge on the ring.

    Absolutely amazing one! My sweetheart had just brought this up the other day and like you he comes from aristocracy (but born and brought up in London) but they have no coat of arms or crest as his father is from Sri Lanka and the practise just don't exist over there as its very much a European thing...I even have one because of my Spanish side but he said he really wanted to create one so it can be passed down generations and then I came across your video and told him to watch. Interesting point of view. From what I experienced, people wearing signet rings tended to be rather unpleasant. What I mean is they pretended to be someone, they certainly were not adding themselves some splendor and boasting they are worth more. They would look down on you. This has obviously nothing to do with gentleman's traits and the real purpose of wearing a signet. I would like only to make a point, some people by their behavior are responsible for a black pr for a signet and therefore discourage from buying and wearing it, as it may have a negative effect, not an honorable one mentioned in the video. I know people who find it silly, that somebody wears a signet, because for them nobility is something which in modern days now totally vanished. Hope that's some food for thought :)
    Personally I would like to have one someday, but maybe of a silver color, I don't really wear golden things and it would not match my watches, belts etc. Although I am not sure if I wouldn't feel dishonest wearing it - still I think it is something that only people holding family crests should have.

      +schwagier So sorry to hear that. I must admit, I have never experienced that at all. Most of the people I have met with signet rings have always been truly exceptional and cultured people. How awful to hear of such snobbery. I understand about not wearing yellow gold too, I am very much the same way preferring silver tones but sadly that is the tradition I have been taught and I want to honour my forefathers as best I can.
      You should definitely get a silver one and enjoy it!
      Great comment, thank you.

      This was particularly visible in Central and Eastern Europe in 80-90. They were worn mostly by money-exchangers, pimps, mobsters and other shady persons or by playboys/gigolos. Signets still have this bad reputation to this day. In many cases it's the same level of bad taste as golden teeth.

    +theurbangentry fantastic video. To be honest rings are not something I wear (apart from my wedding ring!) but I found this video highly interesting as it ran much deeper than the rings themselves.

    Subscribed. This is a great info vid. I also will inherit my grandfathers signet ring from my dad. This will go to my eldest boy, but my youngest will inherit my husbands signet and his wedding ring which has a 1crt diamond in a flush mount. I still think I will buy them their own when they turn 18.

    really good film, my family name has a good coat of arms and can be traced back to a kings son in Ireland in the 4th century, and a castle town named with my surname, it just marvellous to think about it.

    In 2016 I will probably have one ring made with aquamarine. I just love its light blue color...

    Great Video! Very fascinating family history you conveyed. I am interested in these books you have shared with us. My interest particularly on heraldry and it's various meaning. My surname lineage takes me as far as late 16 century Somerset. So far no signs of armorial bearings or other heraldic symbols. Unfortunately, due to the bombing in WW2 many historical documents had been destroyed during the air raids. Nevertheless, the wax seal is classy and still has it's practical use. Thank You for the excellent information!

    Great video. I am thinking of getting a ring made by Elizabeth Gage. To my knowledge she is from UK. I was debating between yellow and white gold. Can wear either one, since I wear mix metals anyway. Decided to go with white gold. I would love to see this ring to tarnish and turn yellow over the time.

    My favorite type of signet ring is oval made of18k gold and with scalloped shoulders. To those who want a coat of arms, the college of arms can grant you one (it's not cheap though).
