Mr. Beat compares and contrasts two border cities that meet at the Mexico-United States border. One has a reputation for being one of the safest cities in the United States. The other has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

San Diego and Tijuana
Two sister cities separated by a heavily protected international border between the United States and Mexico.
It’s illegal to cross over that fence. If you want to go back and forth between the two cities, which hundreds of thousands of people do every day, you must go through one of three checkpoints. The largest of these checkpoints, the San Ysidro Port of Entry, is the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere and second busiest international land border crossing in the world.
The San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area is the largest metropolitan area along that U.S.-Mexican border. While both San Diego and Tijuana are known for their stark differences, they probably have more in common than you think. And who knows, maybe if that giant fence wasn’t there, they WOULD have more in common.

I was born and raised in San Diego and totally agree!

Now that’s a fun fact
Fun fact: there are many radio stations in Tijuana that are targeted towards San Diego listeners. For instance, XETRA-FM is an English language alternative rock station that must abide by Mexican radio regulations. Like, they have to give their station ID in Spanish every half hour, and in the early morning and at midnight, they're required to play the Mexican national anthem.
The Mighty 1090!
Thanks for mentioning this, I was going to share the same thing, also back in the day when TV channels where analog you could see Fox, CW, NBC, KPBS and few others in TJ.
Yes! 91X! You can hear it deep into OC and sometimes LA too
91X is such a great station!
I'm from TJ and 91X is my favorite radio station, and it's so odd hearing them play mexican political ads in english lol
I’m surprised you didn’t mention that Tijuana airport has an entrance that stretches across the us border into San Diego, so the 2 cities share an airport
You know what? I was going to mention that but totally forgot about it!
That's a really good one!!!
They say you can get much cheaper flights leaving from Mexico.
@@ab9840 depends where you're going. When I'm flying internationally, it's cheaper to drive up to L.A. from TJ.
That statement is untrue.
The airport does not cross the border
When I worked at the Safari Park/Zoo my old supervisor said "the only way to pay rent in San Diego on this salary, is to commute from Tijuana." The difference of housing is so exorbitant that he was unfortunately not the only person who would make the multi-hour wait time and inspection through customs everyday
It's the truth!
@@iammrbeat I used to teach near San Ysidro about two exits north of the border and a good portion of my students lived in TJ and woke up at 4/5am to go to school because rent was SO MUCH cheaper. Poor kiddos :(
Unfortunately, landlords are very much aware of this and the prices for people that work and live in TJ are just insane, we can't afford any homes anymore because of this.
@Asphincter says what? It's definitely not always about the money. I've had kids who had a parent deported and their family was stuck with the choice of living together in TJ and waking up very early & getting home very late to keep going to school in the US vs stay living in the US during the week and going back to TJ on weekends. A good amount go to the doctor/dentist/vet in TJ because it's just so much cheaper too. Some adults also just like TJ better.
I hear that! I have several friends who have the Sentri Pass which luckily helps a lot with the border wait.

An important mention is that the rents here in TJ, though cheaper than in SD, are mostly inaccessible to our own residents. Most landlords tend to charge overpriced rents in dollars (when the mexican currency is peso) because the market is hugely inflated. This is in part because of the americans who come to live here and can actually afford those prices and the charge in dollars.
landlords are morons..... i used to rent my house last year for 150 dollars per month just to help people, that was about 3,000 pesos

@@iammrbeat I'm too from that general area, a bit south. Sorry beforehand for my use of colorful language but that city experienced a great decline within the last 40 years.
Long story short, older generations of residents were forced to leave their homes due to the rising crime, and poor urban planning.
Still not as dramatic as the exodus of Ciudad Juárez, where as many as 160 thousand residents left for either El Paso or the state's capital Chihuahua, leaving at least 100k homes abandoned in the process.
Excellent video! I was born and raised in San Diego County and have traveled across the border countless times. In addition to everything you mentioned, some other fun things to do in the Tijuana metropolitan area would include Rosarito Beach, Bajamar Resort, Calente Casino, Estadio Calente (which is home to the Xolos, the pro soccer team in TJ), The Guadalupe Valley wine region, and Puerto Nuevo lobster. Other fun things to do in the San Diego metropolitan area would include sport fishing out of Pt. Loma, Legoland, SeaWorld, Belmont Park, Del Mar Race Track, La Jolla Cove, and Julian's apple and wine country. Best of all, both cities have the best taco shop food you will ever have, anywhere. One drawback of both cities is the mass transit systems are severely lacking. San Diego's is getting better, but they still have a lot of work to do to be as good as most other big cities.

You should have mentioned that "Caesar's Salad" originated at the Tijuana restaurant of that name, and the Margarita cocktail (Spanish for "Daisy") probably began in TJ too. Sinaloa, on the Pacific Coast, is famous for Tequila.
Also, San Diego is much more famous for burritos than tacos. The California Burrito, which features French fried potatoes, originated in the San Ysidro part of San Diego.
Tequila is from Jalisco, not Sinaloa. As for California burritos, I've always heard they originated in San Francisco.
@@miguelruelas8967 You are right about Jalisco, but either way, it is obvious how tequila could have made its way up to Tijuana, and then get mixed with triple sec, lime juice, syrup and ice, and get served to a thirsty Californian. One story places the origin in a restaurant between Tijuana and Rosarito Beach in 1938.
Roberto's, which started in San Ysidro in 1963, claims they invented the California burrito; they are definitely a popular local chain. The real idea behind the California burrito is that the hot potatoes make the burrito more filling for early morning appetites, particularly the appetites of surfers. I lived in San Diego but had to move to Tijuana. I love both of them so thank you for making this video
@Daniel Martinez no I just used to live in tj but now I live in San Diego
Great video! My suggestions for other comparisons would be Madrid and Barcelona, Moscow and St. Petersburg, Kuala Lumpur and Singapur, Warsaw and Berlin or Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
Fantastic list there. Thank you!
@@iammrbeat Hey, Mr. Beat. How about you compare Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland?
honestly at this point you could put out a video called my two nuts compared and i would watch and like :P
Peanuts and Cashews Compared
As someone from San Diego, I am super happy Matt finally showcased my hometown. Great stuff 👍
Gotta say Mr. Beat- your videos are fantastic!! Loved your Vancouver and Seattle comparison!
I'd like to add, although it Tijuana is indeed cheaper than San Diego, you get paid a lot less, so making for a living in Tijuana is very comparable to San Diego.
The sweetspot is living in Tijuana and working in San Diego, which a lot of people in Tijuana do.
This was way more in-depth than I expected, lots of history.
Thanks man always your AUDIO...perfect
I'm watching this video from Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego after spending 8 days in Tijuana. I had a blast at the Hong Kong gentlemens club and the Adelita bar. I also had fun with the girls outside.
Other border city suggestions:
El Paso/Ciudad Juarez
Brownsville/Matamoros
Laredo/Nuevo Laredo
Kinshasa and Braazaville (Republic of Congo and Democratic republic of Congo)
I was born in Tijuana, but I've lived in San Diego my whole life. When I was younger, me and my father would have to go through the Mexican border control whenever we went to visit my mother.
Can I recommend doing a comparison vid on Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas?
Yeah, I really do like this idea. Many of suggested it.
Damn! What a good study. I'll start follow the channel.
¡Saludos desde Tj!
Love these vids! I'll be visiting my aunt in San Diego next month, so I'll be sure to bring my passport!
Have a grand time!
Living San Diego is so special. Its like living in two worlds if you go back and fort with TJ. Extremely hard to live in any other place once lived in SD.
Definitely, moving away to the south ten years ago was so hard for me specially when seeing how advanced the sister cities are, I guess you don’t realize the privilege until you loose it
You should make one about Monterey vs Tijuana.
Or Monterrey v. San Antonio
I was so interested in this fascinating comparison of these astounding cities...
and then I heard Tiyouahna...
Teewana
You should do a video comparing El Paso, Texas and Juárez City. I love your videos, man.
Good video Mr. Beat. I was wondering when there would be a San Diego-related video.
Incredibly, I have yet to visit!
@@iammrbeat Being a geographer, it's a city I've enjoyed researching about. I've been to Los Angeles, but not San Diego yet. San Diego, from a geographic perspective, is quite interesting,.
I know you lol
Hey Mr Beat! Just a heads up, I noticed in your ad break you’re using an Audio Technica microphone that has its diaphragm facing the side while you have the top of the microphone facing your mouth. I mainly bring this up bc throughout the video the audio noticeably fluctuates when you stray more towards the side with the diaphragm. Hope this helps!
Do Laredo and nuevo Laredo next please
Sorry dude, but Tijuana has the best tacos anywhere, not mentioning one of the best cities in gastronomy generally, did you know Caesar salad was invented in Tijuana?
Actually the best tacos are in México City, Cheers!
@@HeyTonyLoquilloTrillo I been in Mexico City, and still Tijuana tacos are better haha sorry my friend
@@rodoglez1 No, Mexico City
tj tacos wayy better lol and i always go to mexico city to visit family, they definitely close but tj wins the tacos for me
Tijuana have the best tacos
There is no "a" between "ti" and "juana." So it is pronounced with 3 syllables rather than 4.
2 a’s not three
Love your info
I always had more fun in TJ, I’ve crossed that boarder hundreds of times, I finally decided to stay in mexico, more freedom.
Well the tens of millions of Mexicans that came to the US would strongly disagree lol.
San Diego/Tijuana is like a modern day Berlin.
And for a good reason
But for 2000 miles
@@ZeRo-bx7lp
Disagree, you will be hard pressed not to find Mexicans and Mexicans Americans in San Diego. I spent a whole week without speaking any english in San Diego, everyone is either latino or knows spanish.
@@band1609 yeah, cause there is a 2000 mile long city
Not at all Tijuana and San Diego are sister cities .people go back and forth between the cities !!
Were you ever thinking about doing a video on the party switch? Love your videos!
Yeah, but other channels have already made great videos about it. Mine would probably just attempt to simplify it further.
The party switch never happen, everyone knows that the Republicans support BLM and women's rights and labor unions while the Democrats control th south and get their support from racist christians
Tips fedora, waits for people to miss the sarcasm
Most videos and articles have seen on it do oversimplify it. Either saying that the modern democrats were the historic republicans and vice versa or saying a switch never happened. Neither is entirely true. It is more nuanced and complicated, not all issues are created equal, not all shifted at the same time or same way.
Hi, I really like your videos. Thanks
Thanks Mr. Beat! I really enjoyed this video comparison. I always wondered what it would be like to live in San Diego. :-) I learned so much.
I absolutely love San Diego. Have been 3 times for comic con and I always go before it starts so I can enjoy the city before nerdvana begins. Would love to retire to San Diego one day. Hell I would love to live there right now
It's such a beautiful city.
Rent is $1500 for a 1 bedroom apartment
@@TacoJesusLives even a decent roommate is expensive! Many adults still have roommates even after buying a home in order to pay the mortgage.
@@iammrbeat yes it is. One the last day of comic con, I always take a boat over to Coronado and just enjoy the beach and the beautiful view of the skyline
@@TacoJesusLives that’s just painful. Went on a trolley tour the first time I came to the city and they talked about how a small home in Coronado with like 2 bedrooms was 6 figures. I almost fell off the trolley
Am I the only one that kept hearing “tiajuana”?
Nah, I heard that too, I cringed. Apparently, some folks somehow add the "a" and couldn't pronounce Tijuana it w/o it.
I don't remember if you compared two cities from different bordering countries before this one. I think you might have done one for Vancouver in Seattle but if not that might be an interesting one.
Would Buffalo and Toronto be a good one or maybe another comparison of border cities in the US and Mexico might be cool?
I’m from Vista, CA. (A part of San Diego County) Great video!
Another comment: there were Franciscan and Dominican missions built close the Tijuana prior to 1769, when San Diego was founded.
Tijuana has a lot more skyscrapers these days than 10 years ago. I like that it is growing vertically. I am glad the two cities are so different, that is what makes it fun.
Another great video!!
Awesome video bro, cheers from Mexicali!
Cheers from Phoenix !
Im a san diego resident and havent seen the video yet i already liked it
Well hopefully I didn't disappoint. :)
@@iammrbeat you certainly did not dissapoint!
