Ohio and Pennsylvania
The Buckeye State and The Keystone State
Two neighboring Midwestern states in these United States. Ok, well, western Pennsylvania feels Midwestern, but eastern Pennsylvania definitely feels Mid-Atlantic. Heck, you could even classify parts of Pennsylvania as part of the Northeast region of the country. It’s a crossroads state, really. Um, but yeah, this video is about Pennsylvania AND OHIO and you know what? BOTH are crossroads states, with easy access to so many great places. Both states sure do have a lot in common, for real.
First of all, both are part of the Rust Belt, a region of the country known for declining industry and run down factories. Even decades after most of these factories have shut down, several cities in both states continue to lose population each year.
Both are probably about to lose one electoral vote in the Electoral College, because the population of both hasn’t grown much in recent years.
Hey speaking of the Electoral College, if a presidential candidate wins either Ohio or Pennsylvania, odds are they are winning the entire election. Ohio and Pennsylvania pick winners, baby! Pennsylvania picked the winner for all but two presidential elections between 1789 and 1880. Both Ohio and Pennsylvania tend to be swing states in recent years, although Ohio seems to be more reliably Republican lately. Both have one Republican U.S. Senator and one Democratic U.S. Senator. Now, the governor of Ohio is a Republican and the governor of Pennsylvania is a Democrat. But the state legislatures in both states currently have Republican majorities.

As to the roads in Ohio being better, any one from PA would tell that’s true. After all Our state flower is the traffic cone, they come out in the spring and stay all year.

We're also called the rust belt because of the often salting of the roadways which induces a rapid rusting of vehicles. Also Valley Forge National Park is located in Pennsylvania.
It's in the northwest suburbs of Philadelphia, so beautiful but expensive to live around it! The developers are always trying to buy land from it.

Since the age of 2, I've lived in a boarder town in PA, where you cross the road and you are in Ohio. Both states feel the same to me. I visited Pittsburgh as much as Cleveland, but lived in Pittsburgh for 2 years for school. Nowadays I still live in a boarder town on the Ohio side. Much love for both states.
I’m also very border, probably a bit further south than you as I have to pass through WV to get to Ohio quickest. As far as Northern WV, Ohio, western PA goes we’re all one in the same. Even as you go up North where you are, all the way to Erie. Now, the eastern half of the state though? Different world. Very influenced by NY, NJ.
Edit to add: I haven’t been there (yet) but I think once you get off the panhandle of WV, WV starts to become very different from our area as well. More southern.
I definitely agree, they are swing states , Amish country, and part of the crossroads of America, where things transition from the South to the Northeast.
Other notable Ohioans; John Glenn (first man to orbit the earth), Neil Armstrong (first man to step on the moon), John D. Rockefeller (the original oil baron). Pennsylvania is also famous for being the first state where oil was pumped from the ground (Quaker City). Western PA and eastern Ohio are basically the same place. The people are very much alike, the climate is very much alike and we are bitter rivals because of it.
They are like that because they had to deal with the many destructive anomalies in the state

its funny my best friend goes to school at IUP (I'm down in dc for college lol) and we live about 40 min north of Philly she was telling me the difference between pitt and Philly is like night and day which is surprised bc pa isn't even that big of a state

As someone from PA, it was pretty cool to see pictures of places I visit often on the video. I grew up in Gettysburg and went to Western PA for college. And it’s definitely colder and wetter.

What 'huge' rivalry? Most Philadelphians rarely go west of Harrisburg, if even there. They're on two opposite ends of the state, and aside from being in the same state, don't really have anything to do with each other. Philadelphia and NY or Philly and Boston have more of a rivalry, as they are much closer, and the people are more connected culturally, and and both being in the I-95 corridor.

So happy you covered Ohio and even more happy you collabed with my area of Ohio! We truly are the middle of the road state, in more ways than one if you know your music history. The rust belt is an area which is changing, would love to see a video about innovations in the rust blet like in Columbus the city which is really driving the change of this area.
I lived in PA first 32 years of my life. Last 21 in Ohio. I like Ohio more due to better roads, nicer people and the weather is a smidge better. Also less government entities. But I miss the mountains of PA and other outdoor activities.

I have been to something like 36 of our states, and each of those has some wonderful aspects, though I am sure some downside as well. Glass half full or half empty? You decide!

@@farismag Each community (at least where I live in Ohio) tends to have it's own schedule for when Halloween trick-or-treating is. Most times it's pushed to a weekend if Halloween lands on a weekday. This is mainly to avoid kids being out late when there's school the next day.
Cool video! Interesting historical comparison: you mentioned this briefly in the part about Erie, but the northern part of both OH & PA were claimed by Connecticut because its charter didn’t set a western boundary. PA even fought a “war” over it, that wasn’t settled until the 1790s.
The fact that the Pittsburgh area is humid subtropical is just further proof that those words have completely lost their meaning. lol

I grew up in Philly and I can say that you totally understated how bad the roads are in PA. The funny thing about it is that while the roads suck they're always doing construction, like, everywhere. That and Wawa is the best.

So much information! I'm going to have to watch again! I had no idea about the earlier history, and learned so much! Columbus is undergoing a revival. Lots of improvements in the downtown area. Businesses moving there too. Also, in Ohio, Amish country is a great day trip. good food, shops, and antiques. Thanks for this video!

I grew up in CLE.When I was in college in the early Seventies Columbus was considered a backwards cowtown. Now it’s bigger than CLE!
Amish are in Holmes County OH as well as rural area E of CLE. I lived 4 years in Lancaster County heart of Amish country!

I grew up in Cleveland (1952-84) and lived a year N of Cincinnati. Southern Ohiya is like KY. CLE is more E coast cityish, historically was settled from Connecticut. Also lived a year in Pittsburgh which is more provincial than CLE . We used to call Da Burgh “Cleveland without the glamour.” Hah. Both were industrial centers including steel making, lots of 19th C immigration. CLE doesn’t get tornados. Gets snow, but not as much as Buffalo. Lived 4 years in Lancaster County in the heart of Amish country. I found PA very different from OH. PA is more aware of history, Revolutionary and Civil War. Lancaster first settled 1720s. CLE founded 1793 I think. Also most of OH is flat, except around Cincy. PA is hillier and prettier. Rural OH is largely agricultural, PA has lots of coal mining. You can get great pierogis in CLE and PGH. I loved Da Burgh and Lancaster!

The hills and trees are definitely the distinguishing feature in PA, I live in a neighborhood that's on a giant hill covered in trees. Also, you couldn't be more right about the gas stations. I've seen wawa, rutter's and sheetz all in PA, and they all have amazing food.
Been looking forward to this! Fun Fact, Pennsylvania is the only state where its residents prefer the abbreviation, PA is much easier to say.

I was at a conference once with people representing like all 50 states. I introduced myself as being from “PA” and EVERY time I got the response: “where?” I’m just so used to it I never even considered other people would have no idea what I was saying…
Awesome, I’ve been waiting for this one. I live in Butler, a small city in western PA, and I can say we’re definitely very similar states. Many worn down factories but beautiful forests and waterways. Very nice states.

I would agree that comparing Ohio and East Pennsylvania is like comparing apples and oranges (I might even consider it a bit unfair) and as an Ohioan, I do have to mention how similar Pittsburgh can feel to Northeast Ohio. We got this pretzel shop in central PA and omg they're amazing pretzels. It started out as a local thing but they're slowly expanding throughout PA
I live in NE Ohio, just outside of Cleveland, and so I love being in this area! I really like the area I grew up in and still live there. Been to PA (especially Pittsburgh) many times because I have family there. Similarities definitely exist between western PA and eastern Ohio, although PA is more mountainous. But same weather, same history, same culture...but I love how it's basically lethal to be a Steelers fan in this part of Ohio (we're diehard Browns fans even though our team sucks), and vice versa for being a Browns fan in Pittsburgh. One of the new Steelers players, Mitch Trubisky, grew up in the same town as me and graduated from the same high school (and I'm a teacher there now). It truly is a great place to be and downtown Cleveland is a very nice area. It's made quite the comeback since the post-industrial decline. Love being close to Cedar Point, to Cleveland, to the country, to Pittsburgh, and to all the other fun places in border states. People crap on us a lot, but that's because they ain't us. :)

As a native Ohioan who grew up outside of Toledo but now lives in Dayton, it was nice to see that one real quick shot of our downtown at the 14:08 mark. Also, yeah, Casey's are everywhere here. Though we had a Wawa, it closed down before I moved here, unfortunately.
I think all of Southwest Ohio is beautiful, I think our 2 and 4 year colleges are some of the best in the nation as far as quality and price. There are of course like other cities, issues unique to themselves, but you can't beat the cost of living and traffic isn't really bad. 25 minutes outside of most urban areas it's you and the coyotes. Fishing and hunting.....all day and tomorrow. Love it!!!!
Yeah, I really, really love the whole area. I’m a college student right now, looking to finish off at a four year university at the end of the year, and I’m so happy to be doing that down here because there are so many quality universities to choose from in the Cincinnati/Dayton/Columbus area and living in Dayton places me an hour away from two of the three largest metro areas in the state.
I have lived in northeast Ohio actually not too far from the Ohio River and this was the first time I have ever heard about Casey's I am more familiar with wawa and scheetz but to be fair I have never been further west Ohio than Wooster and only been to Cincinnati once and Columbus 3x in my life never been to toledo. I have traveled south and north east outside of Ohio.

@@mistermattmoose grew up in the Anthony Wayne school district. Hadn’t heard of Casey’s nor seen a Casey’s until I moved to Dayton. Heard of Wawa via Always Sunny in Philadelphia. NW Ohio is great. Didn’t really appreciate it until I moved away. Though I sincerely love Dayton, too.
I used to live in Pennsylvania and it seems like if your east of State college you consider yourself as Northeastern
I live west of state college and we never consider ourselves as Midwesterner. We are part of the northeast. However isn’t it interesting how similar these state are.
I'm in the west and consider all of Pennsylvania to be northeastern. Because, well, it is. I didn't think this was subjective or a matter of opinion.

Cost of living in PA can be summed up easily. Milk costs more than gas per gallon. In Ohio, that was a sign that a store would not be around much longer.

I was hoping for an Ohio-Michigan comparison, due to their intense rivalry, but this worked just as well.
As someone who lived in Toledo for many years, the highways in Ohio are very good compared to neighboring states. On I-75, there is a very clear difference in quality between the MI side and the OH side.
Also, the cost of living there is amazingly low. When I started my PhD program, I was able to buy a two-story, 3 bedroom house on a graduate assistant salary and on my own credit alone. Of course, it probably helped that I bought it in 2015, when the housing market was pretty much at rock bottom before finally rebounding in later years.

As a Pittsburgher I can tell you Western Pennsylvanians largely ignore Ohio and barely acknowledge its existence, as opposed to Philadelphia which we rarely even think about at all.

To drive from Pittsburgh to Steubenville, Ohio on Route 22, it's about a 25-mile trip that takes less than an hour.
However, based on geographical definitions of the states you travel through, you drive from the Northeast, into the South, and then to the Midwest in that very short drive.

It’s so trendy to knock the electoral college. But the states would become virtually irrelevant if the electoral college was abolished. And the states are a vital check on the centralization of political power. The states and their populations are unique societies among a wider American society. We should not be homogenized into one single political unit, where the largest urban centers dictate policy to the whole nation.
It’s not as much of a check on the federal government as it is a way for smaller states to check larger states. The senate is the higher and more important chamber and Ohio and Pennsylvania have the same amount of senators as Wyoming and Vermont. While have probably close to 20x the population.

As an outsider who has been listening to this channel and letting it go on auto play while I’ve been wrapping up at work, I was struck and felt the need to finally reach for my phone and say something when I realized you were beginning to broach on this subject. Ohio is a state too powerful to comprehend. I know it may not seem like much, but that is exactly what they want, and I fear for the repercussions. As a Canadian, I am sat and watching anxiously as the United States of America’s future unfolds in front of me. But I am not anxious over the country, I am anxious over Ohio and the power that it wields. I fear that one day due to our own ignorance and smugness, we will all become some day subjects of THE Ohio Empire. The future is already looking grim for the rest of the US, it would be nothing short of unhealthy for me to continue to sweat over that, but I can only pray to God that the power of Ohio will one day be contained within its own nation. It will not be long before the USA becomes the USO, but there is still a sliver of hope that the rest of us will still be able to stand our ground and resist the unremitting forces of Ohio. We must all join together. And YES, I am aware of what I have just spoken and I know very well of the consequences. So please, as a fellow member of what remains of the free world…REMEMBER MEEE-

When I was in the 4th grade in California in 82-83, we had California history. Today, I don't think most schools have any state history at all. It's shameful most students don't know a damn thing about their state. Videos Mr. Beat produces such as these, should be a precursor to state history. Teachers need to have some fun with these maybe for 2nd or 3rd grade students to get them interested in their state.
I remember in elementary school, our history classes were called "Ohio history," so we learned a lot about our state. This was mid-to-late 2000s. Not sure if it's part of the standards anymore. But then in middle and high school, you take more of the general histories (ancient history, world history, U.S. history, European history, etc). I think it'd be cool to replicate a state-based history course as an elective for high school students. I think it'd be very popular.

I've grown up in central pa, not too far from Philly all my life. Part of the reason I chose a school out near Pittsburgh is the mountains and the outdoor activities since I live on the edge of the apps. But I will say, living so close to Gettysburg, Hershey's, and Amish country is really cool, and when I move out to the 412, I'm definitely gonna miss 717 and Wawa
