    I've always liked living in Connecticut not for what's in the state, but for its proximity to other things. We're 90ish minutes from Boston, 2 hours from New York, 5 hours from DC, between 1-3 hours for great skiing, and no more than 30 minutes to beaches. We also have great hiking, especially in autumn with the foliage.

      I wouldn't say CT is just MA without Boston. You cut Boston out and MA urban areas still outpace most cities in CT by a good bit. "Boston" as it's traditionally thought of is really greater Boston which at its widest definition includes Worcester, Cambridge, Lowell, Providence and parts of southern NH. If you took that out MA would be left with Greater Springfield and the Berkshires, that really wouldn't compare to CT either.

    • @garyspaziani1699
      @garyspaziani1699 2 года назад +4

      …and Whiffle ball was invented in Ct also !!

    • @RockyPondProductions
      @RockyPondProductions 2 года назад +1

      @Harry Engel Yep, Brookline boarders Boston so it definitely falls in the broad definition of Boston or Greater Boston.
      In Massachusetts you have the towns and cities that directly revolve around Boston (like Brookline) and then you have Worcester County. In between you have the metro west which isn't sure if it relates more to Worcester County or Boston. Worcester County and Boston do differ a good bit in culture even though the population density is pretty consistent from Worcester all the way east to Boston.
      The greater Springfield area is also densely populated but is more similar to cities in CT. Like I said even that isn't a perfect comparison because Springfield is bigger than every CT city.

    • @RockyPondProductions
      @RockyPondProductions 2 года назад +4

      @Harry Engel Interesting about Granville, it is a super small town but I was never aware of it's voting history. Yes Brookline is very affluent and a lot of wealthy people live there who have business or play sports in Boston but don't want to be in the city.
      I have a fun fact for you. Massachusetts is one of the most densely populated states (3rd in the US) but at the same time over 60% of it's land is forest (8th most forested). Pretty crazy for one of the most urbanized states and smallest in terms of land area to be mostly made up of forest if you think about it. Shows how much open land the United States has.

    My wife and I grew up in CT. I LOVE this state, education, salaries, democracy, closeness to NY and MA is great. We can do a day trip in CT through the state and MA and find something wonderful and new every single time we venture out. We have vacationed in RI and love it. Most of our family stems from NY and I was born in NYC, my wife's family NYC. A high majority of CT residents stem from NY families and lived there as well at some point in their lives. CT is a bit calmer then MA, and MA has very nice vacation areas like Marthas Vineyard but don't plan on living there if you can't spend more then 2 million on a house. Healthcare is great in CT. The town we now live in is great, as was the previous town. West Hartford and Farmington. People here overall are smart, polished, and the seasons here are great. Taxes are high but salaries are also among the highest in the country. A School counselor in Florida makes less then half of the their salary in CT. The offset of cost of living although lower in Florida is not nearly low enough to justify living there. Education there sucks, heat sucks, I mention FL. because a lot of CT people have second homes in Florida. LOVE Connecticut.

Notice that each of those Connecticut "identities" was informed by New York.

    CT native here- We invented and are some of the leading manufacturers of: the wiffle ball, the frisbee, the helicopter (Sikorsky Aircraft), and the submarine (Electric Boat). Bridgeport USED to be the manufacturing capital of the world before international trade popped off and most products and raw materials are processed overseas such as in China or next door in Mexico.
    Even at Sikorsky, where I work, we still *finish* the helicopters, but the majority of all the big components are now imported / contracted in other states or countries. Honestly, nowadays, it feels like nothing is ever being made here instate anymore, since all the big plants have moved further south where land is cheaper and taxes are less pervasive to business (if they are staying within the country, of course- plenty of factories are no longer domestic).
    Pretty soon, all the business that's done here will purely just be white collar office work, hence all the upper-middle class suburban neighborhoods being what most people think of when they think of Connecticut. Not saying that's inaccurate, that's where I've been my whole life, but there are pockets of somewhat rural areas in the northern bits, especially in the east where Storrs and my school, the University of Connecticut, is.
    The actual content of what goes on in the state may change, but the people that built this place up will always be the same: the majority of the population are Irish or Italian (I'm half and half) alongside the already existing British population, and when the mass migration waves were hitting the northeast in the early 20th century, a lot of those people actually came in straight through Bridgeport, in addition or rather than going through New York and Ellis Island first.

    Outstanding video! Native Connecticrapper here. Never lived anywhere else. Mass is nice but only to visit. You should have talked about the annual spring to fall battles royal between Yankees and Red Sox fans here in CT. Another interesting note that some in New England may remember is a tv commercial for then Dunkin Donuts targeted at the entire New England Region. It featured people with decidedly thick Boston accents and photo vignettes of places all over Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island drinking Dunkin' and enjoying their donuts and other offerings. At the end someone in the video says something like "Hey, what about Connecticut?" The reply is simple. "What's a Connecticut?" Priceless commercial and hilarious for we here in CT suffering from the ultimate identity crisis and within the enormous shadow of New York City.

And then you have cape cod in the summer which is amazing and these two places are only 4 or 5 hours away for each other. Also the more west and up u go in the state the pretty it gets by a lot.

    Owing to suffering the persistent ignominy of being gazumped back in Blighty in the 60s, my Aunty and Uncle thought better of life in the UK and have since happily assimilated into American life via Massachusetts.
    As such, I've especially found this one useful to give some context to discussions we've had in the not so recent past. Given that I don't generally use a pseudonym when surfing the interweb, in the unlikely expectation they're having a proverbial busman's holiday (?) - I'd like to say hello till next time they hear my dulcet northern accent (oxymoron if there ever was one) on some compatible platform or other. And well done too for an entertaining YT channel. I learn a lot.

I can’t stand NY city area but I love the Boston area. And I do a lot of work near Stamford and western mass doing lighting controls and Audio/Visual work. Western mass and northern/western CT rock and the eastern south of CT is also really nice.

      @Harry Engel no. Only because upstate NY is so vast and spread out. There are tiny shithole towns/“cities” in north-west CT that completely throw upstate nee York out of comparison. If we’re talking about dropping areas like Torrington, Bristol, Winsted in CT, then yeah, just a less spread out version of Upstate NY and western Mass/Berkshires without as much hills and mountains.

    I'm from Ohio but have relatives in Mass. so have visited there a lot. Lots to see up there. Personal favorites are the Mark Twain house in Harford, the Mystic Seaport, the Whale Museum in New Bedford, taking whale watch cruises out of Gloucester, visiting the Berkshires and Sturbridge Village. And I've also had a lot of fun going to games at Fenway Park, and to one Harvard-Yale football game. For people interested in American history that area of the country is a gold mine.

When you read that any place is X amount of minutes or miles from NYC, they are using Times Square as the destination. The Bronx is NYC too... Boston is waaay too far to even be concerned with, and not special enough to go there anyway.

      CT born and raised. I do not consider CT to be a so-called New England state as we have nothing in common and are not even ear each other. I am 24 minutes from NYC and too far away from MA. MA has nothing that I want to go out there for anyway. The only time I did go was to go to a Golden Corral, which I had in Texas. One in MA was the only around at the time, without having to go to South Jersey. The Texas one was of a much higher quality.

    Awesome video. My home state (CT) doesn't get much love so it was great to see. One story I wish you told is the origin of the nickname the Nutmeg State. It's really wild. Legend has it that early Connecticut residents were so ingenious and clever they could create and sell wooden nutmegs. Doubly clever when you consider that nutmegs aren't even grown here. And your right to say we're basically a Diet Massachusetts with a sprinkling of NYC. If you live around Hartford your bond to here the line about being 2 hours from both Boston and NYC. Only Hartford would advertise itself using it's ease of escape. Once again, great video.

      Why do some of you act as if you are bound by some creed to worry about Boston? It takes way too long to get there. Why do you always try to find places that you consider to be equal distance from NYC and Boston? Boston is no where near CT and NYC is about 10 minutes away. Boston at the closest CT point, is still about an hour an some change away.
