I'm pretty sure that Serbia and Croatia aren't the poorest countries in Europe, we are in the lower half, but there are countries in much worse situations than us
Yeah, that's what I meant. Europe, as a whole, is pretty rich, so Serbia and Croatia are still better off than most of the rest of the world. It's all relative.
Only boomers from Croatia and Serbia hate each other. Millennials are kinda chill, I mean, they're like, between 20 to 40 years I guess. And then you have zoomers on the internet who think it's so cool to hate each other even tho we didn't participate in the war. I swear 90% of the haters would be awkward as hell if they meet in real life.

Honestly, coming from serbia, and knowing how pointless the wars were and how badly it affected both of our economies, i feel really sad about our relationship, the fact that so many people are leaving because of financial instability, the fact that we are gonna sell our land to god knows who because nobody is gonna live there and somebody has got to work, i would love to have croats in serbia rather than someone from the other side of the world who is just willing to work here, we could have been proud to be from the balkans, but instead we are proud to leave, it's sad.
I'm from France and even though we are a rich country, people still complain about salaries and think the country is going nowhere. It's pretty popular to say that we want to leave the country. I think it has just become popular to want to leave your country for a better economical prospect.

Haftbefehl Cuzi not correct buddy. Bosnians had their own independent kingdom in the Middle Ages which under the rule of King Tvrtko was stronger than both Serbian and Croatian empires, which included a unique Bosnian Cyrillic written language, coat of arms, and church called the Bosnian Church. Educate yourself and stop pushing that nationalistic brainwashed narrative. Bosnians are and always have been their own ethnic group and people.
@@cruiserx5492 Yes, the kingdom was a Serb king. King Tvrtko I, as he himself says in one charter, sees the land of his ancestors Nemanjić (Serbian dynasty) "left his immune shepherd after them", goes "to the Serbian land", the railways "measure the throne of my parents". He was crowned King of Serbia and Bosnia in 1377. The most powerful lord of medieval Bosnia was of Serbian origin. Bosnia was equal from the Serbian lands.
armarmadillo tvrtko may have came from Serb background but the people he ruled were the original settlers in the area from when the original Slavic tribes settled in the 7th and 8th centuries. There was no mass exodus from Serbia to present day Bosnia, some Slavs settled in Serbia, some in Bosnia, others in Croatia, thus creating the ethnic groups/boundaries. The Slavs that settled on the Bosna River called themselves Bosnians and ruled themselves as such. Regardless of tvrtko, the people he ruled were Bosnians, who called themselves Bosnian, and had their own customs, religious practices, and written language. If they were Serb, they would have simply called themselves that. Even John Kinnamos, a Byzantine historian in the 12th century stated that the River Drina separates the Bosnians and Serb peoples, and that Bosnia wasn’t subordinate to Serb rule, and the people living there has a special way of life and governance.. the ruler of a country does not decide the ethnicity of the people living there... by that logic all Serbs Croats and Bosnians are Hungarian since Austria Hungary ruled them In the 1800’s....
Great video, all nicely explained. Just one thing to mention, we are poor European, pretty poor (Croatia tbh is more developed) but still poorness 'style' in Serbia (or Croatia) has hothing in common with African countries poorness or Even South American countries poorness. or Middle East poorness. Both Serbia and Croatia especially can be consider as rich countries for basically 80% of planet. Unemployment is around 5-10%, It's poor, but Europe poor, still Europe. People used here to have everything (leftovers from Tito era) so they think they are poor if they cant buy brand new car or similar. Also, opposite to Western Europe, huge chunk of population in both countries have properties in ownership, apartments, houses, many more of them (connect it also with shrinking and old population which left each year empty apartments that come into hands of relativies- so, for those who stay). Also, population shrinking is really nasty thing but even that, that means that growth of 4.5 in Serbia example on each year shrinking population (and old one, so no masses of youngsters waiting to find job, like in idk Turkey, Egypt etc) is actually much larger, each year in some Egypt, Turkey or Brazil, with some 4% growth you also have possible milion (or millions) of new people that need apartments, food, everything. Not the case with Serbia or Croatia. Each year, bigger economy is shared on less population, and many apartments are empty due to that, and in ownership of relativies. Last thing, both countries have huge diasporas which brings huge money, and diaspora is concetrated in most developed western countries (Austria, Swiss, Germany) - you have around 200-250k Serbs only in capital of Austria - Vienna (out of ~2 million) - one of key cities in Europe. Second example is Zurich, third Frankfurt. Munich for Croats etc. Belgrade for example has bad facades, but city itself by cars, street culture, fashion, urban furniture, design, places to eat, offer, shopping is on pair with big European metropolis. I mean, we are poor, but poor in Europe, that means something. For example, Ukraine is totally another level of poorness and corruption, inequality, that is a country that is really really frustratingly poor and it's in Europe. Belarus can be also there. Average Russian lives much worse than average Serbian/Croatian, not to mention average Turk.

@@libertas5005 ofcourse it's poor. But poor compared to what? To Germany, France, UK, USA? YES. To huge part of rest of the world it's consider a developed country. I said it, you can compare countries where each year you ahve million of new people which needs to be feed with countries like Serbia or Croatia. Also you have to differ visual style and visual opinion from poverty.

The surname suffixes “-ić” and “-vić” are used in Croatia as well (in addition to Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina). It’s a patronymic suffix (meaning that the first people to bear surnames usually used their father’s name and a suffix) similar to “-son” in Scandinavia or “-ov”/“-ova” in Russia. Slovenians sometimes use the suffix “-ič” (but patronymic surnames aren’t as widespread there), while Macedonians typically use “-ski”/“-ska” (men use the former, women use the latter). More information on South Slavic naming conventions can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surnames_by_country#South_Slavs Edit: “North Macedonian” has been corrected to its proper demonym, “Macedonian”.
Manvici “Vladimirovich”, in this case, is a patronym and not a family name or surname. Russia and some other Eastern Slavic countries use a slightly different naming system that consists of a given name/first name, a patronymic (which consists of the person’s father’s name and a corresponding suffix determined by gender), and the family name/surname (which usually, but not always, has its own suffix also determined by gender). We’ll use Vladimir Putin as an example: Vladimir is his given name. Vladimirovich is his patronymic, which comes from his father, who was also named Vladimir. (Although he is only known to have had brothers who predeceased him, any sisters he would have had would have the patronymic “Vladirmirovna”, and his daughters also have the patronymic “Vladimirovna” as well.) Putin is his family name. (His ex-wife took the surname Putina upon their marriage, and his daughters have the surname Putina as well.) Basically, Vladimir Putin’s full name is the equivalent of saying, “Vladimir, son of Vladimir, of the Putin family” or even “Vladimir Putin, Jr.”. As for women, we’ll use Maria Sharapova as an example. Her full name is Maria Yuryevna Sharapova. Maria is her given name, Yuryevna is her patronymic (her father’s name is Yuri, and “-evna” is one patronymic suffix used for females depending on the spelling of the father’s name), and Sharapova is the female form of her family name, Sharapov (which means her father’s name is Yuri Sharapov). Not all family names in Eastern Slavic countries change with gender, either. Mila Kunis, for example, was born Mila Markovna Kunis (her surname is properly Kunis rather than Kunisa). There are all sorts of rules that determine this, and I’m not familiar with all the components. As for the Czech Republic and Slovakia, they typically don’t use patronyms, and neither does most of the rest of the Western Slavic region (which also includes Poland). Names in this region typically consist of just a given name and a family name (typically with no middle name unless the person decides to adopt one as a second given name), and family names do have different endings for females (typically “-ová” if the family name comes from a noun or a name adopted as a surname - Novak becomes Novaková - and “-á” or something similar if the family name comes from an adjective - Novotny becomes Novotná). Similarly in Poland, the suffix “-ski” typically becomes “-ska”, although Poland has its own set of rules as well. (I remember watching a Wimbledon match where the commentator referred to Agnieszka Radwańska’s family in the stands as the “Radwańska” family when he actually should have used “Radwański”, as “Radwańska” is only the feminine form of her family name, which is Radwański.) Here’s another Wikipedia that talks about Eastern Slavic naming customs in much more detail: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Slavic_naming_customs I don’t make myself out to be the ultimate expert on names, it’s just a really nerdy pastime of mine.
There is no such thing as North Macedonians, only our country is named North Macedonia while we are Macedonians and we speak the Macedonian Language.I need to correct you.😉
mirce kocev Thank you for the clarification. The original comment has been corrected to reflect the proper demonym (a word that defines people of a particular place or ethnicity).

Dean Susec I’m sure Dracula was Romanian, anyway he was famous im history for his torture methods, not being a vampire, he wasnt potraied as one untill 19th and 20th century novels, movies and cartoons. Guess his life and killing methods were inspiring for horror creators :D
Mladen Badrov Well honestly I am not sure.. I do believe that a first “appearance” of vampires was (i may be mistaken about the teritory) in south east serbia or norther part(vojvodina).. Eventhought vampires were know in some for in Slavic culture generally, as people who were burried alive and they wake up at nights to feed on blood, first official report were made in 17th or begging of 18th century. It was reported by Austrians that local Serbian population were exhuming bodies and stabbing them becuase the nails and the hair was still growing on corpses so they believed they werent dead... also there was some kind of a sheep desease that killed a lot of people leaving them with open wounds in that village so people were convinced that folklore creatures were real. Doctors from Austria perfomed a lot of autpsies but couldnt explain the phenomenon of hair and nails growing until years later it was discovered that it is normal for them to look longer because of skin going dry and body decomposing. I believe the first “vampire” was something like Petar Blagojevic, but the most famous in Serbia for sure is Sava Savanovic :)
Really Awesome that you covered this topic too, it is actually a pretty interesting story! I'm not going into any further discussion. Great video. Greetings from a Croat :D
I know it's a meme, but I think Balkan people are really getting tired of being associated with war and hate. It's a thing that happens, but it's not something that affects our lives almost at all. Mr. Beat did a great job by not focusing much of the attention on that issue. Well, having said that... I think the main thing for foreigners to understand is that a lot of troubles in Balkans arose because the borders were not drawn by it's own people or by taking ethnic lines into account. It was always the foreign powers at first at peace conferences, and then communists who were drawing them in such a way that was good for them, and not for the people (they were trying to weaken nationalist sentiments so they purposefully split ethnic groups into different states). Basically the rest of Europe had it's chance of forming nation states in late 19th and early 20th centuries, while we had wars and Yugoslavia in that time, so that process was not finished. That's why that process continued in the 90s, but by that time the world has changed and it got complicated. Plus stupid nationalists messed up a lot of things because of irrational hate and war crimes. In 1991. when the war started Croatia had 924k (17.9%) of Croats living in other Yugoslav states (mostly in Bosnia and Serbia). In the same year, Serbia had 2.08m (25%) of Serbs living in other Yugoslav states (mostly in Bosnia and Croatia). We have a saying that could be summed up as "clear boundaries make for a great relationship". If the boundaries were clear, there would be no tension, there would be no issues. We could all be great friends and even allies (because we have so much in common, language, parts of culture, etc). Instead, artificial countries such as Bosnia are kept alive by the west, just so they can keep the region unstable forever. Croats from Bosnia want to be part of Croatia, Serbs from Bosnia want to be part of Serbia. It's insane that everybody is turning a blind eye to that, and their democratic (and perhaps historic) right for self-determination. Bosniaks should also have their own state, and not be forced to live with 2 more ethnic groups. If you understand this thing that I just explained, you will understand Balkan issues. It's not that Balkan people want it to be unstable, it's just that the politics and borders forced upon Balkan countries are such that there will always be tension. I hope one day when the whole region enters EU and Schengen (if that ever happens) that these artificial borders will be stripped, and we will have stability. And no, this is not coming from a nationalist, far from that, this is just reality. If the boundaries were clear, and maybe with some population exchange (which happened anyway, but in a more brutal way), the whole war could have been avoided. We needed cool heads, someone to negotiate and be realistic. Instead we got... whatever it is that we got. And now the pain and wounds are still fresh, so it will take some time to recover, but we are recovering. We don't hate each other, it's just that we are all put in a tough spot. Mix in with that some uneducated people, some power hungry politicians and some foreign influence (for their own interest), and that's what you get. Most of us just wanna live peacefully.
What are u talking about. You are just oversimplifying and talking about clear nonsense, inventing history. Bosnia isnt artificial and has never been. We waged a war in the 90s because people like you. Yes Bosnia is Serbian, but also Croatian and Bosniak state. Serbs etnically clensed half of the country from Croats and Bosniaks and now u say see this is Serbian now, things dont work that way. Maybe u would like that but there is majority that dont like it. Serbian problem isnt Bosnia, but muslim mayority living there. And NO, western powers arnt the main reason for wars, balkan people and their politicians are. No one forced us to kill each other. Austria,Hungary,Ottomans have always conspired, but that is what empires do.Serbian claim that something is Serbian just because some of your kings have ruled some parts of Bosnia and Croatia 700 years ago is just ignorant and stupid. To claim that if there is Serbian mayority somewhere it has to be Serbian state is ridiculous. Following that logic England today should claim parts of France, Spain parts of USA,Poland parts of Russia etc.But again everything is politics today, u do what u think is best for your interests, we will do that to.With your way of thinking, probably there will be a conflict again. But then again that is our way Balkan way of dealing with things WAR.

The point is to make this subject closer to foreigners. Everybody can check every fact from my first comment, it was pretty neutral. Your comment is full of hate and blame with no facts in it. The separatists themselves declared the independence of the so-called "Republic of Kosovo", without the consent of Serbia and contrary to international law. Today, that state is NOT recognized by 97 of the 193 full-fledged member states of the United Nations. So that the "Republic of Kosovo" can become a member of the United Nations, only if Serbia officially recognizes it as an independent state, and that will NEVER happen! Therefore, when you make these maps, do not separate Kosovo from Serbia, because that would be the same as separating Texas from the USA, Bavaria from Germany, Catalonia from Spain ...

I think most people would feel safer travelling to Croatia and perceive a trip to Serbia as more adventurous. I can recommend both, though
Beautiful countries. Hope I can visit both sooner not later. Especially Serbia, since it's where dad's family is from. Love the guts to make this video Mr Beat, happy 4th of July from Aussieland.
5:09 - 17 roman high officials/generals were born in Serbia, not imperators, 8:47 - Kingdom of SHS (Slovenes, Croatians and Serbs) was formed all together imediatelly after the 1st world war There are missing murders of croatian members in Yugoslav parliament by serbian secret service (same one that organized assasination of prince Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo). 9:40 - Josip Broz - "Tito" was his codename before and during 2nd world war. 11:00 - Croatian is writen exclusivelly in latin, Serbian is writen in latin and cyrilic, languages are similar as British and Aussie English.
Um, those 17 guys (18 if you include Justinian) were imperators....or to be precise Imperator Caesar Augustus's, as full title says. You have all their names on internet, check it out. Also 2 or 3 (historians are unsure for the third one as he technically was an usurper) emperors were born in Croatia. It's also interesting that 3 out of 4 most important Roman emperors were born in Serbia and Croatia, Constantine the Great and Justinian in Serbia and Diocletian in Croatia (the fourth emperor and the most important emperor of all was, of course, Augustus).
11:15 words that are different in Serbian and Croatian are usually loan words... beside that there are bigger dialectic differents inside the countries itself than between their official languages
Also some small differences in the grammar. The more east you go, the more influence you have from the Balkan Sprachbund. Hence the Serbian 'dakanje' (hoću da vidim, imaš da radiš) which is not a thing in Croatia, as well as more use of the aorist/imperfect tenses and the vocative case in Serbian. Especially in the more southern parts of Serbia, the language starts sounding very strange to Croatian ears, with a gradual loss of the case system and a different way of accenting words.
@@PeoplecallmeLucifer only the last part is dialectal. The use of the da-form is very much Serbian standard language and very non-standard in Croatian.
There's no proof that Serbs and Croats were in the Balkans before 780 CE. The only source which says they were there earlier is a source which writes 300 years after the event and relies on uncorroborated folktales for it - and that is the only source which claims that. But none of the contemporary sources between 600-822 CE mention either of the two in the Balkans. Archaeology helps them bring it down to 780 CE, and that's as far back as they can go with current evidence. Bosnia on the other hand has both contemporary sources and archaeological evidence as far back as 551 CE.
Interesting video Mr. Beat. Next time if you can, compare Macedonia (where I live) and Bulgaria. That video will probably be controversial. but it will be fun nonetheless. Cheers. Pozdrav iz Makedonije do svima Srbi i Hrvati.

10ti put
Bosnians had sell their religion because of Ottomans they were serbs and Croats
Haftbefehl Cuzi not correct buddy. Bosnians had their own independent kingdom in the Middle Ages which under the rule of King Tvrtko was stronger than both Serbian and Croatian empires, which included a unique Bosnian Cyrillic written language, coat of arms, and church called the Bosnian Church. Educate yourself and stop pushing that nationalistic brainwashed narrative. Bosnians are and always have been their own ethnic group and people.
@@cruiserx5492
Yes, the kingdom was a Serb king.
Unemployment is around 5-10%,
It's poor, but Europe poor, still Europe.

Poverty in South America is totally different level than poverty in Serbia. You need to study and learn what are you talking about, and not just basic stats/facts.
@@libertas5005 ofcourse it's poor. But poor compared to what? To Germany, France, UK, USA? YES. To huge part of rest of the world it's consider a developed country. Unemployment - ~7%, here and there people own their apartments, and as i said old population meaning for the younger more options. I said it, you can compare countries where each year you ahve million of new people which needs to be feed with countries like Serbia or Croatia.
More information on South Slavic naming conventions can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surnames_by_country#South_Slavs
Edit: “North Macedonian” has been corrected to its proper demonym, “Macedonian”.
Thanks for sharing that!
Also Russia has -vich as well, and Czechia, as well as Slovakia. It is not just south slavic thing.
Example is Putin: Vladimir Vladimiro**vich** Putin
Manvici “Vladimirovich”, in this case, is a patronym and not a family name or surname. Russia and some other Eastern Slavic countries use a slightly different naming system that consists of a given name/first name, a patronymic (which consists of the person’s father’s name and a corresponding suffix determined by gender), and the family name/surname (which usually, but not always, has its own suffix also determined by gender). We’ll use Vladimir Putin as an example:
Vladimir is his given name.
Vladimirovich is his patronymic, which comes from his father, who was also named Vladimir. (Although he is only known to have had brothers who predeceased him, any sisters he would have had would have the patronymic “Vladirmirovna”, and his daughters also have the patronymic “Vladimirovna” as well.)
Putin is his family name. (His ex-wife took the surname Putina upon their marriage, and his daughters have the surname Putina as well.)
Basically, Vladimir Putin’s full name is the equivalent of saying, “Vladimir, son of Vladimir, of the Putin family” or even “Vladimir Putin, Jr.”.
(I remember watching a Wimbledon match where the commentator referred to Agnieszka Radwańska’s family in the stands as the “Radwańska” family when he actually should have used “Radwański”, as “Radwańska” is only the feminine form of her family name, which is Radwański.)
Here’s another Wikipedia that talks about Eastern Slavic naming customs in much more detail: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Slavic_naming_customs
I don’t make myself out to be the ultimate expert on names, it’s just a really nerdy pastime of mine.

And Serbia have World and Europian champion club in football FCRS1991

My first Croat comment! I am glad you were nice, and hopefully my video did a sufficient job. :D
@@iammrbeat few things you missed
I love both countries. Rich culture, beatiful scenery and food and nice people.
Thanks for sharing all that. I enjoyed reading and learning. :)

I don't know why are you focusing so much on the Serbs, since I haven't focused on them specifically anywhere, I mentioned both Croats and Serbs equally. I think your tone and focusing everything on the Serbs, without even talking about Croats is making it really obvious that you are full of hate towards one group of people. I can't engage in a discussion with somebody who is so biased, it has no point. It seems you choose to blame one group for everything. What's even more sad is that you felt the need to make a comment in which you are bashing one group out of nowhere, even though that was not the point or topic of my comment at all. The point is to make this subject closer to foreigners. Everybody can check every fact from my first comment, it was pretty neutral. Your comment is full of hate and blame with no facts in it. And even more, you are accusing me of fake history, which is not fair, since I haven't made any historical claims that can't be checked easily by anyone with a internet connection. Easy serbia is not catolic
