RONAN ALBREICHT LIM Not really. when Frontier G came out, Unknown got eclipsed in power, first by Shantien, and then Dhisufiroa, which has itself cemented as the most powerful, OP, and terrifying monster in the game. Since then, more G-rank monsters have taken over Unknown's position, but none quite so rival Dhisufiroa.
Perhaps the Unknown Black Flying Wyvern is just the tormented remains of what once was a simple Rath. It's obviously fearsome wroth, and it takes something special to become that powerful. There's no Apex that could possibly become this monstrosity, and calling it a subspecies is an injustice to Raths. This thing, whatever it once was, has become something other than Wyvern, Dragon, or Beast. That's why it's name is simply "Unknown Black Flying Wyvern." Nobody could possibly identify what this monster truly is. Note that we do not know whether it is male or female, as it DOES share similarities with both male Raths and female ones. This thing may even just be Wrath incarnate, being more deserving of the name than it's more tame bretheren. Whatever it is, however, know that it wants you dead, and has more than enough power to make that happen.
When fighting this thing, it really feels like it is the physical manifestation of hatred and destruction. How brutal it is in its attacks along with its sheer power. It seems like it has a supreme hatred for all living things and wants all of them, gone.

They are brand new species, maybe we have a really minor sexual dimorphism for both species, which means that we cannot differanciate males and females by the look of it (there might be, or that they reproduce with only one sex (some lizards IRL are acting this way). Yes, they might be an evolution of the Raths, like Garuga is with Kut-Ku, or humans are with monkeys.

Way my friend and I figured it, since you fight these rare mutations in the Tower, there's something there that probably causes such things. Perhaps it's similar to why Zerureusu is covered in what look like radioactive crystalline growths, and Mi Ru can produce similar crystals, sans glow.

But I think that the crystals (or whatever makes them feral compared to other Raths) causes them to have a homongus number of mutation, leading to an extreme case of speciation where the male Zerureusu and the female Zerureusu became two different species (the female became Unknown). And then, they could reproduce by parthenogenesis (a form of unsexual reproduction I mentionned earlier on with the case of the IRL lizards.)
with all this talk about what this monster is, they should just consider it simply as an ancestor to the rathian and its subspecies. the original monster from the ancient times. a primordial rathian. yeah that sounds pretty cool. lol
zero two The hide coloration doesn't match though, though I will give you that she does seem to exert some of the telltale signs of Frenzy Virus infection. However, she seems even more agressive than APEX creatues and it's power is absolutely terrifying. It's black abilities also don't seem to quite match APEX abilities.

Although it looks like a Rathian it actually is just a relation to it. It is not a sub-species like the Pink/Green/Golden Rathians. This thing is likely the mate to the "White Rathalos" that also is not a Rathalos (the Zerureusu).
Not a mate. My friend and I hypothesize though, that there's something in the Tower or under it that can cause these dramatic mutations such as Unknown and Zeru. Which is why you fight things like Silverlos, GoldIan, And Lucent Narga there too.
This theme sounds like something Akuma/Gouki would have. But wasn't Akuma first Unknown when he first apeared, not saying Satsui no hado Rath but could be the inspiration.
ok i never played frontier and i dont particularly like unknown or its fight i think its cool but thats about that. HOWEVER this is without a single doubt my favorite theme in any mh game and prob in any game in general that flute part is just beautiful

I have a theory, that this is a hybrid between a rathian or rathalos crossed with something else. It could happen in the wild, or it could of been done by humans. Like I said this is just a theory, and it is probably not correct.
This black wyvern, is not an apex, but it has to be something, here is my theory. Once a mighty gore magala, this beast was taken down by an extremely high rank hunter, and was captured, but, this gore magala escaped and fought two of the creatures which was coming to attack the village, a black rathian and rathalos, but the evil power of the gore magala caused all of the three to merge, but in the process, the dragon duo was completely vaporised by the power of the gore magala, thus, the gore magala took control of the body and become, what I call this, "Gore rathialos". And it went on, terrorising. As if it were a mini wyvern raviente.
I'll uh...be really honest...I want you to read this back to yourself...how much sense does this actually make? Firstly, a "Mighty Gore Magala" is most likely just a Shagaru Magala since you're implying it is a matured Gore. Or it could be a Chaos Gore. Secondly, nowhere in any form of canon lore has the Frenzy virus been known for fusing or creating new monsters. The worst it can get is up to Apex, and that's it. Thirdly, Gore Magala nor Shagaru NOR Chaos Gore has been seen to be able to take control of bodies at all. This is because, while they control WHERE the Frenzy virus is, it does nothing to actually control it, because it can't do anything to the nervous system that allows a Gore direct control. I'm sorry, but this theory is a little stupid and far-fetched, because it's also just a very hypothetical situation in general. And LASTLY, where did you even get the idea that Gore Magalas can vaporize bodies? I mean, seriously.
