I saw Dread Zeppelin on Freemont Street in Las Vegas in a little club in the 90's.
They were great and the audience was on fire.

Hay Carl.. I grew up with Carl, I remember him getting his first guitar when we were both went to Foothill Junior High. Some of Carl's favorite songs ( he was learning) were Beatles and Led Zeppelin songs on his old acoustic .. I have great memories with Carl.. I remember VH in back yard party's too!

When Ed had the Holmes Destroyer, he either used a PAF or a Super 70. You can see this in the photos from Sunset. There are no pictures of Ed with hex pole DiMarzio Super Distortion or Mighty Mite clones of the DSD after the club days. If I had to guess, I would say it was a single Super 70 in the bridge in the Holmes Destroyer when Ed used it. As you know, he didn’t even put the pickups that Chris had in the guitar originally back in the guitar when he gave it back to Chris.
The Flying V that Carl talked about Ed having was the red one…that one also got stolen. The red one was the one that Chris G. talked with Ed about as being the one that he really liked the sound of.
That story that Terry K. told Carl about Ed’s goldtop and a double-kick Ludwig kit can’t be right. The receipt for Ed’s goldtop and Al’s ‘Cooper Pro’ drum kit was from Music For Everyone 50 W. Sierra Madre Sierra Madre, CA 91024. The Barry & Grassmueck Music Store that Carl mentioned the bag of picks at Las Lunas being from was at 927 E. Colorado Blvd. Pasadena, CA 91106.

@@FinalResonanceTV just to verify my bona fides Jeff - me and my 3 best friends drove up from school in Tuscaloosa in 81 - to see the band at Von Braun - my ears are still ringing and my eyes haven’t adjusted to the indescribable thing we saw for the first time - my multi instrumentalist band mate swore there was a guy under the stage manipulating the guitar sound…that’s how mind boggling the sound was - didn’t hurt that Billy Sheehan opened with Talas - he had some kind of lights attached to the neck of the bass…anyway I’ve been a fan and devotee since 78 and completely support your efforts - I will NEVER forget that drive up 65 in 81, and the show/event I saw from the floor (about 5 rows away but it was general admission so that’s a guess) of VB Civic

I once read in Circus or Guitar for the practicing musician (92 to 94). He said Jerry Cantrell offered to give Ed a Marshall for one of his Peavey 5150 amps. Ed says he could collect them because they are worth money. Put them in a closet or room wait a few years and then make a bunch of money from selling them.

Great episode!, Carl is very entertaining. I'm back-tracking here but I think it was Carl that mentioned Terry Kilgore. as you dig deep, I'm betting that you've heard /know the story with him, I used to be a member of the Plexi-Palace Forum, like 20 yrs ago & Terry was a member as well. I've no idea if he'd be available or even alive still but, he factors pretty prominently in the early EVH story & would make a very interesting & informative guest for this channel. He apparently was the local guitar hero & possibly a source of inspiration for EVH in his developing days. This i gathered from his tellings on the forum and also from a studio guitarist that i became friends with after he re-located to New Hampshire who was in LA in those days. He got burned out of that scene & doesnt look back on any of it fondly. He said to me "i was the ONLY dude in LA during the '80's that wasn't on blow", lol. He was familiar/friendly with all the prominent players of the era. including EVH, Terry, Slash etc ( he called him Slosh, lol ) great content, keep up the good work.

So cool! I’ve been going back catching little parts of this interview for a while now. You just mentioned Northwoods inn, great place! Get those peanuts, throw the shells right on the ground, ha ha. That was down Rosemead.
I almost thought you were going to say, pie n’ burger. Small soda shop type of restaurant closer to Lake Avenue and California. Homemade Coke and ice cream.
Then, when you’re done, just drive straight down California-going west-pretty much take you right to Dave’s house.
You will hit orange grove, go left, and then a right on his street, Bradford-can’t miss it. Right there on the right. Just holler at him from the gate!😝🤘🏻🎸
That’s kind of the way Mark Algorri would drive. While taking the guys to Hollywood. He would load up the guys and their gear in his van or something, head south to the 110 freeway towards downtown, then getting on the 101 to Hollywood. Can’t wait to hear those stories sometime. 😝🤘🏻🎸

I've seen prob well over 200 concerts, Van Halen, Sabbath, Ozzy, metallica 3x, the Who, the stones, roger waters, yes x2, scorpions, robert plant & alison krauss, McLaughlin, Holdsworth, Metheny, Rush, chuck berry, jeff beck, steven wilson with guthrie govan, bo diddley, bad company, Schenker, Yngwie, Dweezil Zappa x2 etc. I've seen some concerts! I'd still put that Dread Zeppelin show I saw in the top 5! The show was hilarious, the music was great, what more could u ask for!

Looking at that picture of Ed, with his shirt off, and the window behind him, that would be a different room. That really cool picture you have of the back of the house, where you can see a window next to that back door, has a horizontal slider panel. And the one behind Ed in this particular picture is a vertical slider.
And looking from the back in your picture, even farther left, I see another window kind of poking out. It looks like it was added on-more towards the front of the house both of those windows are replacement windows, not originals. So some thing was modified around there at some point… Because that house looks like it was built in the 50s. And those are definitely much newer windows. Late 70s, maybe even into the 80s. I replaced windows in homes for a few years back in the early 90s, so that’s something I always look at, ha ha. 😝🤘🏻🎸

Alan was the sound guy at my old church Calvary Chapel in El Cajon California. He told me him and his friend did sound for Van Halen back before they were famous, as well as other bands. He was not bragging at all. He was just a guy talking about his past and how he got started when I asked him. Alan was not really into Van Halen and that style of heavy music. He liked softer and more acoustic type stuff. He played acoustic guitar and Alan and his wife Betty Lou sometimes lead worship at church. He said there was this guy named Jose Aredondo that had a company named Arco Electronics that he started working for, and that Jose would get hired by companies like Vox to go out on the road with bands to keep their gear working. Alan still kept in loose contact with Mike (Anthony) Soboleski and last been to Mike's house maybe two years before I met Alan. He had no idea that all of stuff he was telling me was written about in books and magazines that Van Halen fanatics like me had read. Alan and his friend ended up buying sound equipment and sometimes splitting it up to do different shows in different areas. Alan had bat ears. He would ask me things like "is that 25,000K?" And would tell him that I had no idea what he was even hearing. The nicest and most humble guy you could ever meet. I remember Alan and his wife Betty Lou coming to church very excited one Sunday because they had gone to see Earth, Wind & Fire in concert and someone in the band recognized Alan and brought them backstage. They had so much fun. Betty Lou unfortunately passed away from MS and I believe I heard that Alan also passed a few years back after we had moved away from the area.

Ed lived kind of like Elvis. Elvis stayed in Memphis. Ed stayed in LA. They both had connections all over the place. Ed will always be tied to the whole LA club, label etc. The first band to really take off in a big way durimg that time from.the Sunset Strip. The Runaways, Legs Diamond and Hollywood All Stars were all.promoted to get big but they didn't stick..Van Halen blew up. Probably the first after The Doors era.

Carl... Is your former legal name Carl Hassis? I remember you, because I was in a band later with Hal Voznik whom you used to play with. I think Tim Allen and Rob Killins were in your group also. Killins was like a little punk rich kid who could play the heck out of his Gibson SG. I was in a band with Killins too for a short time with Mike Irwin on drums at AHS. He used to screw off too much. May Rob Killins rest in peace. He had a sad ending. I heard his dad paid big bucks for Rob to take lessons with Eddie Van Halen.

Sounds plausible to me. In the 0U812 era, Eddie used what looked like the original Frankie (which would have had reflectors on the back). Frankie had a Kramer neck on it at the time like the 5150 Kramer. He used it in the “Feels so good” music video. It could be Eddie had that guitar at the Monsters of rock rehearsals.
