Jas, you’ve hit the nail on the head…That was always the impression I got about Ed in all the interviews I read down the decades. He was this CREATIVE SENSITIVE SOUL set loose in a MACHO ROCK WORLD HE NEVER MADE. He said how he expressed himself through his guitar more than he could out of his mouth and indeed more than any other way…It was part of him . His soul with which he communicated with people. The pressure of fame, and macho band politics became oppressive for him so poor Ed would try to blot it out with Coke and alcohol sadly…The thing is Jas , you were a SYMPATHETIC EAR for him. A wonderful oasis of calm enjoyable reflection and camaraderie and humour where he could talk honestly and freely about his hopes, fears, frustrations, ambitions and memories…and through you giving him this space the world of guitarists got to learn about the REAL Ed and his creativity. That was the GIFT you gave to him Jas….And to us too. You were really good for him. Thanks for the kindness you gave to this great genius. We SALUTE you…Best wishes from Pevensey UK.

Jas has a good point here. In rock and roll there's basically Berry, Hendrix and Eddie. 3 game changers. Id say Ed had more in common with Les Paul as Jas points out to his luthier mindset and playing ability as Les obviously had both skills. Makes sense those 2 got very close as friends.

I saw "Are you experienced" in the rack, bought it, brought it home. Put it on my record player & within the first few notes, my brain was twisted around & I was totally blown away. Talk about "FRESH" ! Suffice it to say, that was all I did for days - listen to that record.

What a fantastic interview. Often I'm interested in historic music content but I just don't have the patience. Because of your chemistry and enthusiastic point/counterpoint discussion this interview was engaging from start to finish. And Jas just seems like such a character. You can tell he had fun along the way. Thanks for making my day!

I still remember where I was when I heard Jimi Hendrix had died. I can see it this very moment. It was very depressing & sad. I had been lucky enough to see him twice. I was maybe 17. The one thing I always remember about Hendrix - He was incredibly Loud (I was fairly close) but you could hear everything he did & it was not Harsh like many other Loud bands.

Great Interview with Jas , I’m a huge Eddie and Van Halen Fan and have really enjoyed Jas officially releasing his EvH interviews … you can probably do another interview with Jas , he mentioned that he lived with Buckethead For 7 months ? … wow ! That would be amazing to hear about that experience. I’m sure you have heard of and listened to some of Bucketheads songs , he’s far from just a “ Shredder “ he does a lot of genres of music , Anyway Keep up the Great Work !

Oh, to see that footage of the young Van Halen brothers!! 🥰
I love the way Jas expresses witnessing the love between Valerie and Eddie because I tried to express, as a woman, on Andrew's It's The 5150 Show, how the love they shared affected me as a 19-20yo woman at the time. You see, in those days, especially in Rock-n-Roll, it wasn't "cool" to LOVE or be in love or get engaged, much less get married! So, a huge thank you to Jas for describing what needs to be described! For without love, what is life worth living for? ❤
    Wow! 700 interviews! Absolutely incredible!
Jas, I mean Jeff Baxter, is an old hippie like me! Whoop! ☮🤘Thank you both so much for this wonderful interview. Honestly, I have a tear in my eye at the end. Peace and Love!

The thing is Holly when people in macho rock n roll claim it isn't 'cool' to be in love like Ed was with Valerie always remember the words of PAUL McCARTNEY in the song HEY JUDE . When he says - 'Its only the FOOL who PLAYS IT COOL - and MAKES THEIR WORLD a little COLDER'.

Great stuff ! The main thing that struck Me when I listened to the Eddie tapes was that even tho He was playing unplugged I could instantly hear the strength in His fingers as the notes rang out,it made Me realize how much of His sound existed in His hands.
BTW.. I would choose Django for my player to go back & watch ..if I could ..there's precious little footage of the Man in action so be great to see Him playing.

Hey Jas, I read a follow up article you wrote about EVH many years later, possibly written in the 1990s. Like you mentioned in this interview, Ed borrowed five bucks to buy cigarettes. In the article, you wrote that Ed bought two packs. He kept one and tossed the other one over to you. The article said that you kept those cigarettes and still had that same pack. Out of curiosity, do you still have those cigarettes today?

You guys are really up on Eddie Van Halen. I really enjoyed this interview.
I quit drinking and the rest, Thanksgiving 2006. I literally walked into AA and realized that there was a lot more to living!
Anyway I worked in Records retail/ wholesale from 1977-1980, out here in King of Prussia Pa..In around February 1978, that first V.H. appeared. A co-worker had a copy- we had received about 800 for our smaller one stop/ warehouse operation. We could have sold 8,000 much earlier than we realized! My friend and I in the biz, knowledgeable about releases had no clue about who VH actually were! I looked at the album titles- wait, "Atomic Punk," another punk album?! Our supervisor, Mitch grabbed the album and laughed! This ISN'T a punk album, it's a hard rock album that is going to sell, sell sell!
In March, 1978, Journey featuring brand new singer Steve Perry, was scheduled to play at the excellent Tower theater, Upper Darby. Our CBS sales guy had promo tickets. So We asked Chuck aboutthe opening act. Chuck replied, " Well there's a middle band, Montrose with Ronnie Montrose, and some brand new Warner Brothers signed band- Van Halen...wow, the Atomic punks are comin' out!
The tower theater was a movie house- 6,000 seater. We arrived to our seats just as VH took the stage. We now knew a bit about VH. This was a solid Journey Philly/ burbs crowd, Steve Perry, Infinity album...and then
Eruption! From note one, the VH spectacle took over and blew away the Journey fans! They played for 35 minutes- pure hard rock clean sound, stunning all who were lucky to know to be there!
After VH, it took half of the Montrose set for me to decompress! I likened Montrose as a buffer zone to let us chill down from VH.
Now Journey came out Ansley Dunbar as drummer, Perry, Neil Shon, but Journey were not going to match VH !!
After the show, I got my CBS Journey ticket, scratched off Journey, and wrote VAN HALEN !! I still have that ticket!
Shortly after that Philadelphia regional show Journey and VH went on different Journeys!! LOL
VH came back 3 months later, selling out the 20, 000 seater!
"Atomic Punk" has been my fave VH song along with "Aint talking 'bout love!"
R I P Eddie- these guys really properly- they celebrate Eddie's career- class acts, each!

When he mentioned how rock guitar evolved from Johnny B Good to Hendrix's Star Spangled banner in 12 years I felt like I should point out what I consider the big jump in virtuosity , and that was Lonnie Mack's records in 63 and 64 , Wham and Chicken Pickin . Those represent the bridge from the bluesmen and Ventures, etc into electric guitar as a lead instrument

Actually in interviews I think Ed said it was ALEX who told Ed to turn his back on audiences when he played 2 hands on the neck …Ed quoted Alex as saying -‘these b*stards are going to rip you off BLIND’….In those days it wasn’t called ‘tapping’. Or anything…In his interviews you could hear Jas saying it was very difficult to define what Ed was doing to other players. The word ‘tapping’ was I believe invented , spread and popularised by Musician Guitar magazine columnist writers..Ed would laugh at the word ‘tapping’ later….Ed would describe it with Jas and Steven Rosen as ‘my finger thing’ …..Dave LR in a 1979 interview for Uk music newspaper SOUNDS talked about Spanish Fly described it saying -‘Edward has this way of playing around with the neck & at one point it sounds like the record is put on the wrong speed but this guy does it all live’….DLR would make funny jokes about other players trying to do it after seeing and copying Eddie….Just before Castle Donington in 1984 in the UK Dave was asked about inter- band competition and what form it would take.Dave answered - ‘ well, I think it’s all going to come down to WHO DOES EDWARD’S SOLO THE BEST’ 😂😅…lol

Interesting comments about Ed being concerned that he was outshining Dave, his personality was never going to let him not be jealous. I am surprised it never really was tagged as a reason Dave walked in '85, its an emotion that's tough to keep private. understandable i guess,. what's not understandable is why he thought the band would split when he left? i guess he learned a valuable lesson .😂

This interview is so important because it shows how much Eddie LOVED his Brother & his Parents & Valerie & his son & Valerie's relatives ....It shows how important FAMILY was to ED ...And this needs to be emphasized now more than ever in the recent events of Mr. Roth trying to sell misinformation about Eddie to create controversy to shine the light on himself....Roth's persona did not make Van Halen...Eddie's Inventive GENIUS did. Roth is currently trying to paint a very superficial picture of Eddie which bears no relation to the sensitive creative soul that he was. And he is making up false information.& interpretations which could do DAMAGE to the people who knew & loved Ed ....People like Wolfgang & Valerie.

Oh come on sir, ash can be extremely light or very heavy or medium depending on the tree and where it grows and the part of the tree top or bottom that you cut.
The earliest Broadcasters and Teles were designed to be made of light wood, in fact Leo also liked pine but it was a little soft. You can find swamp, ash telecasters new or old that weigh barely 6 pounds, maybe close to 7.
