    Thanks Mark for the great music throughout the years. Your guitar and Jack's vocals are one of the best combos ever. I am now 70 years old and still listen to your music every week. 🤘

    Hi Mark cool interview I really dig your band and how you play brother. I played with Bates in a band called Angel before he joined Stormer. And we played the same bars VH did like The Connection in Pomona and Louies Night Gallery in Covina. Eddie would come to see us play to see Bates and we wold go see them play. And when I was in Yankee Rose we played concerts with VH . And we also did gigs with QR I got to know Rudy Sarzo and Farankie Banali .

      @@abeperez1844 Yes we did. I was just being chistoso when I said what I did about those bars. Back in the days when a 25 year old seemed old to me. Not that I wouldn't have done the deed because of it. 😎

    Coming back here as I am learning "Lady Red Light" and I have to give respect again (and try not to look like a sycophant at the same time) - I am struck at how outstanding the solo is in that song. That is an extremely well written song - IMO "Down Boys" is probably the best written song out of the 80s and "Lady Red Light" is right up there with that but is produced better and the guitar solo is perfect - I mean perfect. I have also been asked to learn Kiss Of Death and we all know that is a Mr Scary triumph - but I just enjoy playing Lady Red Light more - it's more musical and less ego. Mark - much respect to your musical taste and playing - wow!

      Met him and Jack Russell in a pizza joint beside the club(Attic) that they played where I live in Greenville, NC. They were both very nice and cool got Jack Russell to sign his autograph a paper plate then saw them a year later in same club and they had Bobby Blotzer from Ratt filling in on drums. Good Times 🤘

    Great interview as you asked all the right questions! Mark nailed it at 36:45. There was no rivalry between EVH and Rhoads. I have many friends who were "there" in the 70's and they said the same thing. If there was a rivalry, it was with EVH and Lynch. The rivalry between EVH and Rhoads was up by the Rhoads fans.

    • @216Numbskull
      @216Numbskull Год назад

      I can attest to the account your friends told you back in the day to a point. It wasn't so much a personal "rivalry" between EVH & Randy at least as far as Rhoads was concerned. It wasn't in Randy's nature to be a pompous prick or worry about what any other guitarist was doing. If anyone Randy rivaled with it was himself on his own guitar playing. He was transfixed with the guitar constantly trying to improve his skills & rivaled the opportunity to be the best he could be with the instrument not against anyone else who shared the same love for the guitar. The so-called "rivalry" wasn't the blame of Rhoads fans either it was a preconceived notion set in motion by various guitar brands & gear companies, music magazines, record labels, etc... to create a buzz in music for profit in sales more so than anything else. Sure there were egotistical, drunk & drug induced moments where some guitarist said this or that off the cuff which turned into he said she said BS! But it's part of the game, don't hate the player hate the game! Blah,ha,ha!!! I'm not saying it's right or a good look on some of these musicians who get caught up with their own selves, you & I already know they do. However, if an artist doesn't even believe in themselves then they've already lost the fight to pursue their dream as a Rockstar! It's nothing more than a hobby then, move over cuz that dude's here to take your place. +Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul+

    Thank you for interviewing another person whom I consider a friend. Mark is awesome. I got a complaint in the comments for not keeping it about Eddie. So here's my first Van Halen story. In fact Abe the commenter before me was there hanging out with me. Like the young guitarists who took it seriously, I worked hard to be as good as I could be. When I saw Eddie at La Puente Park in 1973 they were still named Mammoth. Being the same age as Eddie I was very interested in seeing him play. That was the day I knew I would never be the best. Even though I was very good for my age, I realized even back then that I would never be as good as or better than Eddie. I was looking at the best.

    They talk about Eddie’s tone having a true distortion by turning the amp up and pushing the tubes to their max. Eddie’s plexi was a one of a kind amp, no other plexi had that magic tone. It made each note Eddie played have a bell like quality to it, distorted yet clear and unprocessed.

    Cool interview! I saw Mark opening (I think) for Whitesnake. He's a great player. That came across better to me than the videos. Him playing live. I was into Randy before Eddie. But I learned a lot of my technique from Eddie. He had that genius level understanding where it would be like, "Why didn't I think of that?" Randy to me seemed a lot more schooled. George was a big influence.
    I will say one thing. I'm not trying to be a pain in the neck. I wish that there would have been more bands from all over the place. Like instead of five bands I wish there had been 500 or 5000. A show like this. Man, in the old days I would have been astounded to find it. When I moved to Florida Jeff Berlin had a show on public access. I was blown away. I just wish that everyone who ever cared this much about music maybe didn't have to end up working jobs in IT.

    Mark - do disrespect at all - you made somewhat of a living on the industry... but you never stated the TONE Eddie had.... the licks and tricks were one thing but his tone was where it all came from. Ed used to say that he would listen to his dad play the clarinet and he would just rip on one note - going for the tone!!!! And Great White did not have Alex or Dave. To this day, DLR is a household name recognized immediately - Jack Russell makes us think of an equestrian lady’s little puppy - thank you for the kind words on King Eddie - there was not one fucking thing that would have stopped VH from making it - anyone who would deny that is a complete and total fool - no posers in - VH , they were all for real....

    This is subjective….but Mark’s playing and tone on songs like Lady Red Light, Rock Me are the best recorded guitar tones I am aware of….that’s an opinion of course, but I loved that dense tone. Lady Red Light has a great solo that fits the song and does not try to be too flashy, yet is flashy enough…..which is the problem so many guitarists then and now have that think they are “shredders”.
