Even if you're not a racing fan, Forza Horizon 5 is worth experiencing just so you can see where the bar is for the racing genre in 2021, and it is a very high bar indeed.

I think the main reason no one gives a shit about the monetization is because like, 99% people don't buy it at all as they don't need it. Forza is honestly one of the least grindiest games unless you want to amass every single car in the game and you already get cars like a Corvette and a GR Supra right from the beginning whereas in other games you'd probably have to grind a bit, especially for a car like a corvette. Basically, unlike say the Avengers where the game itself is so grindy that monetizing the grind pisses players off, some players literally ask for more grind for the sense of accomplishment it gives(the CARPG kind of style you mentioned).

Great review for a non-racing fan especially. Very excited for this. One criticism of the game, for a lot of legendary car manufacturers you'll see the car list caps out at like 2018. The game is missing a vast number of cars since the last release, and i strongly suspect these are being held back for the dlc. This jives with your monitization concerns a bit. Personally I don't even like the double XP bonus in the edition i bought because I also would like the carpg approach, and the bonus ruins it. I don't think it gets you ahead in any real way IMO, just makes you progress way too fast. That game pass addon is weird..... Alas very excited, great review, thanks!

Edit: I think people dont care about the vip pass is because like you mentioned: you get 3 supercars in the first 10 minutes. If you play enough you will have to much money anyway. I ended up having 600 cars and 220 million in the bank after around 250 hours playing on horizon 4. The original Horizon which is nearing 10 years old now (God I'm old!) did have the "carpg" mechanics you were missing here and in subseqent Horizon titles. You had rivals to beat going up through the classess until you got to the Horizon champion in the last race around the whole map. Its a common complaint with a lot of the OG crowd who started with the original game that we all would like to see return but sadly I dont think it ever will.
I like the freedom we have now don't get me wrong but I would love for some sort of campaign like that to return and it could be made as a side activity as you go up through championships from D to S2 class. Good timing, I completely forgot that the game comes out in a few days for Game Pass subscribers. I'm pre-installing now because of this review. Thanks for the timely upload.
Talking about how the game is designed to make you happy reminds me of why I love Horizon 3 and 4 so much. I played those games exclusively for weeks on end without getting burned out, which is rare. When work was stressful and life was overwhelming, I'd hop in Horizon and buy a new car, tune it to perfection, and hit the accelerator as you said. I think you have such a great grasp on what makes games great, and how they're designed to make you FEEL. It's also great that you don't need to "keep up" with the game each week if you don't mind missing some of the weekly challenges and rewards like Horizon 4's seasons system. Playing games is my main hobby, as odd as that is to type. There's always 5 or 6 games I'm trying to play consistently and with how demanding some games are of your time, I'm consistently falling behind in games that require daily or weekly play. Horizon is the best "chill out" series I've played, especially since I love cars. I'm really excited to play it on the 9th.
Also, the fact that you state multiple times that this game isn't your cup or tea, but still strongly recommend it is a testament to your ability to stay objective when reviewing games.
I have Game Pass anyways, it has so much value for the money for me that I've kept it for over a year now. Because of that, I can simply add Horizon 5 to my game library and essentially cut out $60 from my monthly payments. I have at least 15 games using Game Pass totaling way more money than I've spent so far. Now, this doesn't work long term. Games get removed from Game Pass, which is obviously a huge problem if you go to hop on your favorite game and suddenly it's no longer available. Also, the cost will eventually out way the content offered. It's a short-term, high-value solution. I think you're better off using Game Pass for a year or so and to figure out what games you want to "own" (considering you essentially rent access to games now, even when purchasing them), then cancelling once you've purchased most of them. If you use G2A in combination with Game Pass to get an early look at titles you might enjoy, you're gonna save a ton of money in the long run.
Just for context I've got about 2000 hours across all the Forza games, with most of my time spent in 3 and 4.

Ironnically, FH1 had that sort of career progression that Skillup is looking for! I do see why he wants it, since it was fun in that game, but also I can see why Playground Games have focused on pure freedom and fun instead since FH2

The thing I love about this, is that it ISN'T overly arcadey; in fact I wish it's handling was more like the mainline Forza Motorsport games, that would make this the perfect racer in my books. There are plenty of driving games out there that feature acrcadey handling, and to my knowledge, not a single open world driving game with realistic Forza Motorsport style physics', so it would be nice to have this. I do understand though how sitting somewhere in-between is a compromised for both groups of players.

There's this early access game that's currently in development by 2 people, and its called MotorTown. It sorta has what you're looking for. It has very simple poly graphics, but the handling and physics are much more realistic than Forza, and it is a joy to play.
It doesn't have nearly as many cars, nor is it racing focused, but its definitely worth checking out.

With all due respect if you cannot see the difference in graphic quality between the high Fidelity mode and performance then you need to get your eyes checked. The 60 FPS mode has worse pop in than last generation games. Not only is it noticeable but it is highly distracting. 30 FPS is the way to go, it looks great and is playable and locked at 30, anyone that says it's unplayable is just trolling.

I can only respect the fact that someone let it be known that the genre of a game they are reviewing isn't really just for them. It's an honest review from a perspective that someone can understand... unlike other big time game "journalists" who just throw a game at a person and tell them to review it even when it's not their cup of tea and a viewer wouldn't get that bit of information from the reviewer.

This (and the in development Everspace 2) are the reasons I wound up not taking a month off of Game Pass before Halo next month. I'm not enough of a racing fan myself to buy these games full price, but I've kinda wanted to check out the Horizon series for a while now. Sure does look purty!

Theres a lot of missing content .. its just fh4 ..bigger with better graphics and less cars ,body parts , and wide bodys ....instead of going crazy with the custumization like nfs heat or car x drift by having a lot of options made by forza art devs , no..we went more vanilla and boring.. and i lost hours of liveries in fh4 that i can bring them to fh5 and these are my problems with the game without even expanding on connection issues , cars /convoy that vamish for a bit

The reason nobody cares about 2x race rewards is because money becomes damn near valueless after some time and especially the tiny amount you earn from a race.
