Optometrists have a doctorate with four years of post graduate work. An ophthalmologist treats eye conditions with medication and surgery. An optometrist treats eye conditions with medications and surgery in only some states. An optometrist can restore vision through scleral contact lenses in cases where LASIK has damaged the cornea, prescribe precise degrees of prism and do vision rehabilitation in cases of muscle imbalance or concussion where surgery will not. Optometrists and ophthalmologists comanage cases for the best outcome. When a person goes to see a successful ophthalmologist, the associate doctor is very likely an optometrist. Optometrists treat medical conditions of the eye up to the point of surgery and after surgery in conjunction with or independently of ophthalmologists. People who believe optometrists only prescribe glasses are not up to date.

Star Scream optometrists are eye doctors. Nobody said optometrists are medical doctors. Ophthalmologists are allowed to do everything that optometrists do but they do not normally receive the training to do everything optometrists do. For example, they refer to optometrists for the fitting of specialty contact lenses as medically necessary devices and for myopia control in children; they do not perform vision therapy or utilize neurovisual medicine to treat binocular vision dysfunction. Each profession has its place in doctoring the eye.

It's spelled OPHTHALMOLOGIST. And actually they do NOT do everything that an optometrist does. It's been mentioned above already, but ophthalmologists are not trained in specialty fit contact lenses, nor do they have extensive experience in regular contact lenses. They also do not do vision therapy. I'd like to add that a large percentage of children are misdiagnosed with attention disorders when in fact they have a dysfunction in binocular vision and/or accommodation -- ophthalmologists do NOT utilize these areas of vision care. Also there are states in the USA that allow optometrists who are properly trained to perform certain surgical/laser procedures. I am an optometrist and can prescribe glasses, contact lenses (soft, hard, specialty), diagnose and treat injuries and diseases to the eye whether they are mechanically induced or induced by systemic disease. I prescribe oral and topical medications including pain management, antibiotics, steroids, glaucoma meds, etc. I've also saved a 14 year old girl's life because I saw signs of a brain tumor during a routine eye exam. I know several optometrists who have done the same. Optometrists ARE eye doctors -- nobody claimed optometrists were medical doctors. The scope of practice for an optometrist can differ depending on what state or country they practice in. Please do your homework before posting public comments and making yourself seem silly.

    I'd disagree.
Optometrist - Calculates the prescription and checks the health of the eye, eg for diseases, like glaucoma.
Opthalmologist - the eye Doctor that Optometrists would refer you On to, eg, for your glaucoma to be treated.
Dispensing Optician - trained to make your glasses and dispense low vision aids etc.

Optometrists are not eye doctors. They chose the name of their profession and means "optical measuring". Ophthalmology means the "study of the eye". Only ophthalmologists are "eye doctors" or physicians who treat the eye.

Actually optometrists are eye doctors having finished a doctor of optometry. You are correct that Optometrists are not medical doctors. Optometrists are trained to diagnose and treat many eye conditions: Optometrists are trained to treat glaucoma, eye infections, eye injuries and can perform laser treatments in some jurisdictions. Optometrists do not do surgery.

Agree with this video. Go to an optometrist if you need glasses or contact lenses and but otherwise have healthy eyes and have no systemic diseases that can affect your eyes. Go to an ophthalmologist if you have a medical problem or disease in the eyes and especially if you need treatment for it.

Sorry, Michael you've got it wrong. Optometrists are eye doctors. They go to school for at least 8 years if not 9 should they choose to participate in a residency program. Optometrists are able to diagnose both refractive and medical conditions of the eye. They are able to diagnose and often times treat conditions such as eye infections, corneal abrasions, glaucoma, cataracts etc. and are able to refer to an ophthalmologist should that patient need surgery. Optometrists do much more than "just" prescribe contact lenses and eyeglasses.

an optometrist is not an eye doctor. They give out glasses and contact lenses. They did not go to medical school. An ophthalmologist is an eye doctor and eye surgeon. Very misleading video.

Go to #1 FIRST. That would be an ophthalmologist, i.e an eye doctor. NOT an optometrist.
