  • Learn how to read your prescription for glasses! Dr. Allen walks through what an eyeglasses prescription really means in this glasses prescription explained video! Looking to buy new glasses? Watch my guide! • How to Choose GLASSES ...
    Understanding your glasses prescription can seem daunting, but it's essential for ensuring you receive the correct eyewear. Whether you're looking to learn how to read your eyeglass prescription or simply want to know what your glasses prescription means, a basic understanding can help you feel more confident when discussing your vision needs with your optometrist. Typically, a spectacle prescription includes values for sphere (SPH), cylinder (CYL), and axis, which indicate the degree of nearsightedness or farsightedness, astigmatism, and its orientation, respectively. Knowing how to read your prescription for glasses can help you understand the specific corrections your eyes require.
    For those new to prescription eyeglasses, it's crucial to grasp the meaning behind the numbers and abbreviations on your eyewear prescription. Learning how to read your glasses prescription involves recognizing the significance of each value, from the SPH indicating your overall lens strength to the CYL and axis that address astigmatism. This knowledge not only aids in understanding your vision correction but also empowers you to make informed choices when purchasing prescription eyeglasses.

      Mild myopia & glasses since my mid 20's. No more myopia after cataract surgery a few years ago at age 81. But still have presbyopia (+3.25) and current prescription includes +0.50 sphere correction. Definitely need glasses for reading/close-up, but why is it so comfortable wearing them full time rather than not (progressive lenses), even though my distance vision is 20/20?

    Thank you so much for the convert minus to plus section at the end. I just got a new eye test and the new prescription was using the + instead of -. The numbers were very different and I thought my eyes must have changed a lot, but it turns out it's just written in a different form.

      @@DoctorEyeHealth I have a further question regarding this conversion. Let's say my Sph is +1.50, Cyl is -3.50 and Axis 90, after the conversion, it becomes Sph -2.00, Cyl +3.50 and Axis 180. But since the Sph value changed from a positive value to a negative value, wouldn't that make me far-sighted in one form and near-sighted in the other form? But surely I can't be both far-sighted and near-sighted at the same time, so am I far-sighted or near-sighted in this case?

      Yeah, I am still not 100% sure why they use Plus vs Minus, I'm not sure if that's just an old custom that has never died or if its because they are in the mindset of removing tissue rather than applying a new lens in front of the eye. Either way, it all works out in the end.

    This is great - super helpful. In 10 years of going to the same eye doctors office, they've never offered to share my vision or prescription measurements. I finally asked this year as I'm trying to wear bifocals and wanted to understand how they're configured. Would love to see content on how bifocals/progressives are configured and measured - and if you haven't already, how glasses should fit, eg when do you need to have the ear pieces adjusted, or the angles of the ear pieces to the lens frames. And - curious how many visits to the eye doc should it take to get the right vision correction? Every year I have to go back multiple times - strength of prescription given is often far too strong. I'm trying really hard to learn as much as I can to help 'correct' when the script is off (and truth be told I don't have time to go to the eye doc 5 and 6 times a year just for 1 pair of glasses)

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  26 дней назад +4

      Hey thanks for asking! There can be some causes of a faster changing prescription. In a younger individual, I would be concerned about a condition called keratoconus - which is a progressive corneal disease that often causes frequent prescription changes. For people that are middle aged, the change in prescription could be related to early lens changes (the lens inside the eye begins to crystallize and this can change the power of the eye), which is very normal. in addition if someone had been over-minused in their glasses - they may experience this change to a faster degree as the power of the eye changes and the eye muscles cannot compensate as well.
      The one other major thing I would want to watch out for would be blood sugar changes such as with early uncontrolled diabetes. Higher blood sugars can cause a swelling of the lens inside the eye and can cause a shift in glasses prescriptions.
      Hope this helps.

      For the other question, wavyness in the vision can occur for multiple reasons, from anything such as an unstable tear film to migraine headaches to more serious retinal conditions. I wish I could help more but this is something to ask a local doctor about so they can examine the eyes and give a diagnosis. Hope that helps.

    Is it possible for a cylinder to go from +1.75, axis 80 to +1.25 axis 70 in a year, and then a year later back to + 1.75, but with an axis at 70, or is it more likely one or both of the last two prescriptions are off? These are not done by professionals but by helpers who don't stay long at the practice. They are either part-time and/or temporary. Some are good. Some are terrible. If my axis is really 80 and off 10 degrees, will this cause vision problems or is my astigmatism low enough that it won't matter? (They did put it years ago at 90, and I was unable to see out of the glasses. I had terrible ghosting.) I will order a cheap pair of glasses online to see, but since my records got screwed up this time too, I'm not sure what axis I'm going to end up with: the 70 one on the prescription or a different one. I'd just like your opinion. I understand you can't give medical advice. Thanks.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  25 дней назад

      Hmmm. Perhaps that is another way to write Manifest Refraction (measured power) and the Final Refraction (Ordered Power?).
      In eye care, when someone does a subjective refraction (the better 1 or 2 test), the final result of the subjective component is not always what the doctor will prescribe. Because sometimes the subjective results would cause problems with the eyes, such as double vision, for example.
      That is a bit of a guess though, I have never heard of anyone writing Ordered Power and Measured Power.
      Can I ask what country you got the Prescription in? Perhaps its a regional thing.

      One way to achieve that in your situation would be to correct both of your eyes with contact lenses and wear glasses with 0 power on top of it.
      Or you could look into Ortho-K lenses. One Problem there would be that you might be out of range for those lenses because your high cylinder on the right. But you could try it.
      Else it's kinda rough to fix it since glasses who correct high - naturally come with reducing the size of the picture. Same the other way round.

    Could you make an in-depth video on how to do manifest refraction? I work as an ophthalmic technician and do refractions all day long. However, there would be patients who give the most obscure answers and have weird prescriptions. Or even trying to "fish" for cylinder.

      @92AlexanderS 25 дней назад

      That can be a multitude of reasons. Are you based in the USA? Every form of cataract can cause weird prescription, Keratokonus, it’s definitely something to look at and ask more question to narrow down the problem. At least that’s what I do and it works fine.

      People often are hungry for minus. Since minus usually boosts the contrast.
      rule of thumb would be to only correct with more minus:
      Sphere -> if visus gets better
      zylinder -> reduces ghosting and or blurriness which is kinda easy with the right usage of a cross cylinder

    Hey guys I need some help, so I recently just tried eye contact lenses for the 1st time this Saturday, I wore them for 4 hours and before bed I took them off. The next day Mothers Day. My eyes were super dry throughout the whole day, the following days its been getting better but I get random dryness throughout the day. I have never had dry eyes before and my Dr. is going to give me another trial on lenses. Is there anything I can do make my situation better? I do not want to develop dry eyes syndrome just because I want to look better in the weekends (No glasses)

    How long should it take to get use to bifocal glasses, the ones without the line thru the lenses. I tried them several years ago, I’m 70 and it scared me that I would miss a stair on the steps, I just mentally scared myself out of trying them again. I use a pair of glasses for distance and a different pair for computer. My husband just got some and he loves them.

    • @tjs114
      @tjs114 25 дней назад +1

      I was terrified when I got progressive bifocals. They literally were like walking around in a fun house mirror. For the first week, I only wore them when I was walking on a flat surface in a straight path- like walking on the sidewalk to my mailbox, or down a hallway. I had to retrain my way of looking- you have to do a lot more head tilting with multi-focal lenses. After about 3 weeks, I had myself retrained to function with the new lenses.
      I would recommend going to progressive instead of 'the line.' You get distance, a nominal area of improved vision and then the 'reading' at the bottom. But really, really think about the frames you buy. If you don't have a lot of bridge to your nose, they'll slide and you focal points will be out of alignment.

    • @BlingyBea
      @BlingyBea 25 дней назад +1

      @@tjs114 My husband has the progressive lenses and he went to a bigger frame to have more vision room if that makes sense. Within a week he got use to them. My fear is I’ve always looked down when I’m walking for fear of falling and now that I’m 70 I sure don’t want to fall.

      I'm like your husband. I had bifocals, then trifocals and didn't like them, but got progressives and loved them. I remember when an astigmatism correction was first added to my prescription, the doc warned me to be careful with steps. I followed his advice and in a matter of days was totally comfortable with the new glasses.

    I'm an engineer so bear with my geekiness please. I get a prescription and I need additional correction for reading (ADD). But, I don't like the "reading prescription" focal distance being so close because I can't read the dash of my car while driving. If I push the focal point out to about arms length, then I find that the depth of field is so nice and long that I can read a book by holding it just a bit farther away; I can see the dash just fine; and bonus, I things at my feet are in focus. So, what is the formula to push the "reading prescription" focal point out another 12 inches? (I hacked it myself, but would love to check it from an expert).

    • @SluggishDuck
      @SluggishDuck 24 дня назад

      example. If you are over 50 years old your lens which is used for accommodation for near distance will go stiff. Usually if we look at near objects we automatically accommodate to pushour far point to that thing.
      If you had no lens or it is not working anymore:
      +3 dpt of ADD. Reciprocal of that means 1/3 which means 0,33m or 33cm since 1/dpt is meter.
      To push your far point more to distance you need to take your ADD and reduce it. -> 1 dpt: 1/1 which means 1m.

    I saw my ophthalmologist a few days ago and she gave me my new prescription. I happen to also have an optometrist, and her prescription is different from the ophthalmologist. The Sph value is what's different. Any ideas why they are different?

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  11 дней назад

      Depends on how much it changed, it’s normal for the powers to sway a small amount depending on the day, the testing room, the technique and if eye drops for dilation were used. Most ophthalmologists don’t do refraction themselves and usually technicians do it for them, and most ophthalmologists were technically never trained in refraction (they mostly learn on the go during training- but never study the theory or technical components). Where doctors of optometry get more training in that area. But if the numbers are close, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

    • @SluggishDuck
      @SluggishDuck 24 дня назад

      Many people refer to 'perfect' vision as '6/6' or '20/20' (US notation measured in feet), but this is not strictly true - these terms refer to 'average' vision. If you achieve a vision measurement of 6/6, this means that you can see at a distance of 6m what an average person also sees at the same distance.
