    Most opticians I’ve visited spend more time selling you frames & lens upgrades/coatings than they do making sure you’ve got a good fit. Hence me watching this so I know what I’m asking about. Thanks for posting!

      I get your point - but - for a good optician who knows how to make adjustments it does actually take more time to choose frames and lenses than it does to make those final adjustments for the individual wearer. I get ya, I do, point taken and a good message to be out there. John

    To the man that made this video: I can't put into words how much I wish you were an optician in my area. I have migraines and it is extremely, extremely difficult to find frames that don't give me a migraine. I feel like the only person in the world that has this problem. Your the best and by far the most informative eyewear and lens buying information person on the web. You have taught me so much about what goes into buying a set of frames and lens's, And I know what to look out for now when shopping. On a side note the last 2 purchases made me realize that there are a lot of very poor opticians that don't do there job but simply act as salespeople. the first optician sold me a frame that was far too small width wise and temple arms far too short, which made me go to another business to buy another set with only slightly better results. Then I discovered your channel and it changed my life! So thank you so much.

      I’m getting discouraged with frame choice and the lack of knowledge the opticians have that have sold me frames. Just returned my glasses today that I was unable to wear, the width was too narrow, making ridges on the side of my head and the reading portion was too low where I had to tilt my head back too far to read. Trying on glasses for only 5 minutes in the store and wearing them full time is a different story!

    i cannot tell you how enlightening this video was. A year ago I had to start wearing my first pair of progressives and while they have in a basic sense 'gotten the job done' they are far from what I wanted and I have been so frustrated with my cheeks and brows smudging my lenses. So much so that my friends think I have some kind of OCD about cleaning my lenses--but it is only because they are CONSTANTLY SMUDGING. I won't even get into what I paid for them... ugh. I realize now how absolutely incompetent most of the people are that work at the places to help one fit for frames; even in the optometrist office. I got a new Rx literally 3 months ago and have been on the hunt for frames that fit well, going into soooo many shops. I had a pair on hold at a place that I was considering purchasing and then I watched this video--took another look at the selfie I took with them on and was like nope, those fit horribly! But the workers were giving me all the praise about how "great" they were for me. LIES... I don't trust anyone at this point. Sorry, for the rant.... I am just so incredibly frustrated and have no idea what to do to get into a pair of appropriate glassess. Thank you for this video and making me feel like I'm not crazy.

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  2 года назад

      You are welcome. Constant smudging may be a combination of poor fit (face touch) and a problem with the AR or non-glare coating. Sorry you can't find anyone to trust but kudos for learning how to do it right on your own. John

    When I was a little kid, my optician kept giving me glasses way, way, way too big for my face. They were constantly falling off my face, sometimes flying across the room when they came off. Therefore, as an adult, I'd constantly worry about that, so I'd ask if the frames I was trying on were the frames I was getting. I was relieved when they'd say, "This is your frame. We are taking it and putting lenses in it." However, I did get a different lens shape in my most recent glasses than the one listed on the temple. It wasn't too different, just slightly sharper, squarer edges. This video is so helpful. Thank you. It is so nice to see an optician paying attention to detail. I wish there were more like you.

    I don’t look at eyebrows (FYI I do not work with prescription optics therefore it may be different, but my company originally trained us to take several considerations when fitting customers such as: fit, eye center, base curvature of frame/ lens, rake, etc (when fitting frames) I usually behind my placing frame (open temples) on table ensure they are “even” then I turn upside down to make sure or adjust to a level height. I then examine on my client and make sure eyes (pupils) are centered and explained I have made the needed adjustments in 15 years (off and on) I have had 2 people not satisfied and come back to see another employee for an adjustment (in my defense the 2nd one was bc I was out of the industry for 4 years before returning PT bc protecting everyone’s vision is literally my passion and hobby! I get paid to make people look good AND hopefully educate them on the importance of vision care at all times)

    Good day sir I've been watching your videos for some time now I have to say I learned alot from you I thank you for that my good sir. I have a problem I've been facing here in south africa where patients take frames which are too big for their face an example Frame Pd is 73 and the patient's Pd is around 62 and it's a progressive and the lens size is small

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  3 месяца назад

      I'm not sure what you are asking? When you say the lens size is too small that would be a cutout issue which is a measurement/lab issue. If the lab is provided with the correct frame SHAPE and measurements and human measurements then it is their responsibility to provide you with a lens that will cut out properly. On the other hand, within reason you can't have a lens that is "small" for a progressive which is where you want some depth to the frame. Depending on exactly what the issue is there is a solution. If you want to email me through the OpticianWorks website with an example I'd be happy to help. John

    This is very helpful. From my personal experience, for quite some time, recently, I was given different glasses, with slightly different prescriptions and could not understand why they were "wrong" and have come to realize that it is as much getting the frame right as getting the prescription right. My personal bugbear is the nose bridge, with many opticians trying to tell me they can "alter" frames where the nose bridge width, of the frames they offer, is too small. On the other hand a too wide nose bridge width can be a real disaster. I was recently given frames with a large nosebridge. The frame, overall, fit nicely, mainly because the lens frames were a bit on the small side. The result was that the lenses were too far apart and everything looked like I was reading inside a bowl because, apparently, when the lenses are too far apart, there is a bit of a prismatic effect (according to a source online.) So trying to get the refund for those! Furthermore, only recently did I realize that my nose bridge is slightly high (in line with just above my eyebrows, compared to many whose bridge is more inline with their pupils). This seems to result in the need for a slightly larger bridge width, but, as importantly, it also requires consideration about the frame style. A nice large round frame, just doesn't work for me because it ends up with about a third of the glasses above my eyebrow (ok, a bit of an exaggeration) so I either end up with the glasses down my nose, or being pushed up too close to my face). I have yet to meet an optician who has given me any advice about a high nose bridge and how it affects frame shape choice as well as nosebridge width.

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  3 года назад

      "...when the lenses are too far apart, there is a bit of a prismatic effect (according to a source online.)"
      Not sure I agree with that --- Maybe --- but when made correctly the lenses are shifted within the frame when they are cut so that the lens should be in the proper place and not create any prismatic effect.
      Sounds like you should look at Silhouette 3-piece frames. Customizable for bridge, temple length and the shape is entirely up to you. Find a place that does A LOT of them and the optician there working with you should be able to create something that addresses all those issues. Expect to spend A LOT but you are creating (almost) a tailor made pair.

    I've worn glasses for going on 64 years now, and I have a really out-there Rx with very high power for far-sightedness and mucho astigmatism - and now I'm in progressive trifocals. (No discount lenses for me - I can't tell u how many times I've had a lab screw up my lenses!) When I was a little kid, glasses were super ugly, and I hated mine til I got into college and could buy my own wirerims (thank God for John Lennon for shaking things up). Now I can afford several pairs at a time, ranging from normal to ironic or very funky.
    I often find frames online that are edgy and inexpensive, but sometimes not exactly the right size. With a good optician who knows me, I can compensate for the low markup on my frames, fudge the frame size a bit, or even use antique frames. This video gave me a window into my opticians' brains, solved some mysteries, and helped me to know when I can push the limits on fit for fashion. Thanks! Maybe you could make a newer video covering some of the pitfalls of fitting the new big, heavier retro-fashion frames...

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  2 года назад

      We have many, many videos on the pitfalls of the new "dinner plate specials" but fashion sometimes overrides common sense. Sounds like you are having a blast playing so keep doing it! Nothing wrong with the one-off pair for the party or the vintage pair for that one outfit. But - keep the oversized stuff for special occasions and keep the daily wear -"as small as you can get and still have a proper fit." Sounds like you found a great optician BTW.

    I am realizing just how badly my optician training sucked whenever i watch your videos 😣 soooo many great lessons (presented concisely and clearly) on optician BASICS. Love it 👍
    I agree with you SO much that the very first thing you need to look at is FIT, not fashion. Funny enough, I found the ‘fashion’ and styling part of being an optician the HARDEST part of the job, as I hate sales, and I also have no eye for, or care about, fashion at all 🤣 you could say I was in the wrong career lol 🤣 anyway, I would have literally no idea how to answer women’s questions about their ‘colouring’ or ‘face shape’, so I would just over focus on the analytical& objective ‘does-it-fit’ mindset when picking out frames for patients. However I was ultimately so uncomfortable in sales and the frame styling part of it that I ultimately left the career after 7 yrs 🙃

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  4 года назад +5

      Well maybe if someone had also taught you that frame shape-face shape and color matching was total bullshit you might still be in the game. Trying to do the impossible makes for hard work... (but yeah sounds like it really wasn't the job for you - since it is all about sales) John

      Honestly though you have some mad optician skills and I love your teaching style. It’s so frustrating in retrospect how poorly my Optician program was run !!

      NYC is one of the few places where you should be able to walk into just about any optical and get a good fit. NY still has some high standards for opticians and just sheer volume alone means the cream rises to the top. Look for a independent shop and now you know what to look for!

      @@LaramyKOptical Thanks for the reply! I'll try out some of the independent shops, but I think you are overestimating many (though surely not all!) of them. Within each store, there is probably an expert or two but I feel like it's luck of the draw. In any case, thank you so much for making content so that I can now be informed. For the last few years, I've suspected that my progressives were fit terribly and now I know they were too narrow by A LOT. I so appreciate your work. All the best!

    Say it again for those louder in the back FIT not Fashion of course trends are important we all want you to look fabulous, but we want your eyewear to do their job as well! Sure ask a friend for an opinion, but listen to the advice of the EXPERTS as well! It’s about looking fabulous but most importantly a properly fitting frame with correct lens coverage!!! #Preach

      Additionally do get STUCK on specific “size” aka width of glasses.. there are other factors AKA lens is one size, bridge width is another.. then you have rake, base curve, temple length AND materials bc some materials are able to be customized a bit more than others please allow the experts to fit you if the feel they are able.. if they keep suggesting other options- it is for a reason be open to listening and understanding the reasons they make alternative suggestions or suggest alternative materials. Example if I can get a great fit but an acetate (plastic) frame has temples that do not meet your needs we might suggest a combo or metal frame (IF it meets is functional for your lifestyle) but any frame with metal temples and a cover we have optical tools and are able to actually able to customize by using tools to trim the temple cover as well as the metal inside that cover! Please let us assist you in getting the perfect frame that works for your needs AND looks beacon YOUR face bc we make sure it is perfect for YOUR needs, eyes, lifestyle, and VISION needs!!!!

    This guy is the first I've seen to mention eyelash touching lens. I was wondering what the solution is and seems like his recommendation for adjustable nose pads is one solution. I didn't know about having lens cut further out, so that is something I could mention.

    Good afternoon. I added to bands to support the temples. Now the glasses do not slip but I feel this nervous-like sensation of having the frame against the space just over the nose. Might this be due to the fact that I am missing support on the nose (there is that space you mention in the video) and the pads are part of the frame. Not real pads, it is one pair of plastic ones. "Hugo Boss" they say lol Thanks in advance, love the content.

    speaking of minimum seg height (18), i also require that the patient has at least 9 mm from the fitting cross / center to the top of the frame for distance viewing (10 or more is ideal, 9 still ok in my experience). whether or not the frame has nosepads makes a huge difference in deciding if these factors will cause me to reject the frame, due to adjustability or lack thereof.

      No it shouldn't be. BUT - It will be part of the video titled Frame Fitting Advanced which we are developing now. 95% of day-to-day sales don't require any thought to vertex. And well eyelashes touching is another way of saying vertex so I guess it is in there. ;-)

    Hi, love the videos btw. If a pt has low sitting ears (and uneven ears!) how do you go about adjusting plastic frames to get the optimal pantascopic tilt? (When the frame is parallel to the ground there is already positive pantascopic tilt). Cheers!

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  3 года назад

      Depends on the frame. * Heat at the chassis end. *Bend at the hinge. *File. *Massage the temple. With plastic you have to get creative. Sometimes it simply can't be done or you have to induce Xing at the bridge.

      As long as you don't have temple impressions left in the side of your head yes I suppose you have some wiggle room there. Lot's of big guys have to compromise a little sometimes.

    John, if the metal temples are pressing against the sides of the face can an optician bow them out a bit for a better fit? Also, if the temples are pressing the sides of the face but the secure grip feels good to the wearer, is that okay as well.

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  Год назад

      Yes we will do that sometimes. I always called it milking the temple or massaging the temple. As long as you have enough length a little bowing isn't necessarily a bad thing.

    5:10 every one of my glasses bought at retail opticians are like this. At the age of 13, my head was significantly larger than almost all adults. When I started riding motorcycles, my helmet had to be special ordered.
    It's weird that online stores HAD the larger frames I needed. I live in Southeast Asia. People here are small. I'm not big or tall. Only my head is. 😁
