  • The Optical Cross: Learn how and why we draw the principle powers and meridians of a lens on paper.
    Learn More: opticianworks.laramyk.com/
    The Optical Cross:
    The combination of a lens front base curve and its back curve (or curves) results in the total power of the lens. This power can be drawn on paper and it can include where on the lens the power is located. When we draw the total power(s) and position, or axis, on paper we call it drawing an optical cross. For optician training or ABO NOCE study, this lesson includes a bench session where we closely examine a sphero-cylinder lens marked with its two principle meridians. We then go on to draw an optical cross directly from an actual lens. We place powers on an optical cross and we learn to remove a written prescription from an optical cross.

The only exclusively uncut lab in the country; we provide our customers with independent, high-end alternatives to corporate brands. Through craftsmanship, technology, and independent, innovative vendors like Younger, IOT, A&R, and Quantum Innovations we’ve developed the Integrity portfolio of freeform lenses and coatings. Made in the USA, the Integrity brand is not a generic house-brand, but is the absolute best we provide, designed to give the wearer that “wow!” experience.
    In addition to the digital line, we still offer conventional surfacing, including glass. Maintaining traditional equipment gives our customers vastly more flexibility in their dispensing, particularly when it comes to more difficult prescriptions.

    Thank you for this slow explanation, braking it down like this is making so much sense to me. It really does make a difference to actually know what your doing rather than just flying through it just for the test. Thank you for highlighting that.

    Thank you thank you thank you! I can't thank you enough for not charging an exorbitant amount of money for you knowledge. For being so willing to freely share what you know. And you made it so easy. My company I work for sent me study materials. I was reading through them, thinking there was no way I was going to pass. I'm a smart woman, but I was completely baffled. Then I found your web page! And the heavens opened and the light shone down! I got this. Thank you.

    God bless you sir and also your team. You have really saved me. I am studying an optometry course and everything is such a blur sometimes, our lecturer even says we should be able to do the transpositions without a calculator but i''m really not that good in math or algebra. Thanks for the confidence, really. Understanding this brought tears to my eyes. Thanks a lot.

    Okay so I am going to start an optical program soon and this is amazing that you all made this content available to us, so thank you for that I appreciate you all for your time and efforts, that’s number one and well number two thing I have to comment is kinda weird but I didn’t notice anyone else making a comment on it, so I noticed and really started hearing some whispering noises around 13:42 and it lasts until about 15:00 or so. I don’t know if that was a mistake or just a personal thinking out loud but it made me spooked 😱 it’s freaky sounding. Somebody/ anybody tell me if they heard the same thing or even know what it is or what they’re saying cause I’m completely confused and slightly uncomfortable 😣, but that aside these are awesome and a huge help , I thank you again ( creepy voice dude and all ) lol 😂

    Hello! I found this video helpful because I now know how derive a prescription from the optical cross as well as how to add the power of a lens onto the optical cross. The math portion of it was very easy for me to understand. What was not easy to understand, and what I still can't wrap my head around, is all of the terms! I don't know what a principal power is nor do I know what a meridian is. I can't find the definition of these terms in relation to optics, and I was hoping this video would help with that. I know how to "solve" the problems, but I don't know much more than that.

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  4 года назад +1

      I'd head over to www.OpticianWorks.com. I'm not sure where the terminology comes from exactly but I think basic geometry? It is a case of assuming you would already know some things before ever needing to watch a video on the optical cross. Not something you Goggle for fun...

    Please do a video on ANSI standards. My question is I know if the requested PD and the actual PD are off horizontally you get to play with is .66 prism diopters. My question is is it a flat out .66 if you're off it doesn't pass ANSI standards? Or it's .66 of whatever the prescription if so then if I have
    10 OU, and through Apprentice law I discovered thatI have 6.6 base out does that mean that it does not pass ANSI standard?

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  6 лет назад

      D Sep All the videos on prism are ANSI Standard based. I do cover that in detail with some practice exercises on the website. Short answer is, "NO" wrong is wrong. You will not go through working Prentice's Formula to figure out of it COULD pass. WRONG is WRONG send it back to the lab. And sadly I can't actually use ANSI since they are proprietary and copyrighted/trademarked. Which to me is like saying that you can copyright/trademark the number 2, but heck that is the way it is. John

      Could be anywhere. Could be the same everywhere. Principle meridians any of 180 possible locations. If in doubt always go back to the lens - look, touch, feel those curves. The high point and low point is power you know. Everything in-between you can figure out. As to where it is - until it is mounted in a lens it could be anywhere. After that it is about axis. Sounds like you, and the person asking you that question, could use OpticianWorks.com! John

      Or from Dr. Seuss: It could be here It could be there It could be left It could be right It will be where it needs to be for the best site The concept on the brain it taxes but it all comes down to axis Think of that lens as a wheel and roll it around until it makes the deal

    Is the cylinder power only added to the top half of the lens?

      Er, um, no. But - there is a drawing or cross model where cylinder is shown as being applied over or added "on top of" the spherical portion. I never quite got my arms around that one and it has caused some problems for me over the years. If you mean why is the cross shown as 0-180 or 180-0 that is just how it is drawn with the assumption that what is happening on top is also happening 180 degrees away. The only exception is the prism chart based on full 360 degree notation.

      Sorry - opticians in the US don't do refraction so we don't cover it. John

    What if we have only Cylinder value?

    Does this video mean that a uncut lens of -7.00 sph and a uncut lens of -7.00/+3.00/90° will have the same thickness at atleast once point along the sides.

      Yes! But I would encourage you to see it and feel it with an actual lens rather than trying to visualize it off the optical cross. (Although that is quite impressive too) John

    I'm having trouble with the volume in this video. I can hear the first couple of mites then it goes silent.
