No matter where you buy your eyeglasses it is always best to have them professionally adjusted to improve their fit and comfort. It will help you see better too.
If you are looking to purchase prescription glasses online, it is important to continue seeing your eye doctor yearly for eye health evaluations. Although you may be seeing well, many eye diseases may creep up without affecting your eyesight until it's too late.

Hello
Dr I have floaters since 2018 but .from last year I see floaters in Dark too ..its like flashes...?
❤️
Plus I came first tho..
High index would be the best for me, I have a high prescription .
I've been wearing glasses since I was a year old. Since I was a kid, I could see that distortion you talked about on the edges of my strong polycarbonate lenses, but the eye doctor just told me that I must be imagining it, because apparently gaslighting children is acceptable. It's there, and it's why I wear contacts as much as possible.
What's it with opticians being not forthcoming with info? FGS its the patient's eye/health not yours!!! This makes me very mad!
It's not just kids who get gaslighted regarding lenses. After spending lots of money on lenses and specialists, I finally began my journey to find what was best for me. I know what I'm seeing. I don't allow doctors to tell me that I'm not seeing what I see.
My last pair of glasses had this. The edges were blurry and it seemed like I had a really narrow field of view. I was told that's just normal, but no other pair of glasses I've ever had bothered me that much.
@@astrosquirrel5038 I tried High Index lenses one time and could not wear them. It was as if I had tunnel vision. I could only see clearly out of the very middle of the lens. Couldn't drive with them. After convincing them that I WAS NOT looking through the progressive part, they then told me that some people could not wear them.
I can't wear polycarbonate either because I see colors feathering off the edges of objects. I stick with CR 39. Best for me.
Where I live there are hundreds of optical stores, I have used eyeglasses for a long time and although I visited almost all of them, none of them honestly clarified the difference between the materials. They just told me that polycarbonate was the best material against scratches (which is why I always chose it) when in reality it is not, in addition to putting more emphasis on trying to sell treatments that are not so important. I always trusted their opinion as professionals but the 80% of them (or they employees) only have the mentality of merchants ... it was not until now that I began to learn more thanks to content like this and decide for myself which product is suitable.
Thank you very much !
My polycarbonate lenses took just like 3 months to see scratches... it freaks the f out of me wonder if I got scammed.
yes for 30 years was told polycarbonate was the best,,so guess was lied to sell more always went for scratch resist and whatever is called so people looking at you can see your eyes not reflections
Yup I can’t believe I kept listening to them. I got glasses with polycarbonate lenses that were recommended for me, and it made my eyes look small and distorted, even got headaches. That was until I did more researched and ordered high index glasses from Ray-Ban to accommodate my higher prescription and it made such a huge difference. My eyes look less distorted, and I don’t get fatigue anymore. I used to hate wearing glasses for this particular reason, now I actually wear them everyday lol
I wear the polycarbonate lenses and I didn't know what those color distortions were until I watched this video. Thanks Doctor Allen!
Your page is amazing. You broke this down in such a simple way. Easy to understand. Now I know exactly what I need. I appreciate this. Thank you.
Great information for the customer here!
Thank you Doctor, for your valuable information!
Sometimes what makes the difference is the price range.
I watched a video on lense coatings that left me with a profound respect for the ultra high lense coating technology. I must admit, I've been careless in handling eyewear and have swore to make changes.
Clear, informative, to the point. ❤
I love Dr. Al! He explains everything so well in laymens language!! Thanks, Dr Al!!🥸
Your videos are so helpful and informative! Thank you.
So happy I found this channel, very helpful!
Hey thanks! Glad you are finding it so useful!
Thanks for such an informative video Dr. Allen! I had wondered what Trivex lenses were. Didn't get glasses until age 42, so went straight to Progressives. What could be better than a lens that has every different section allow you to have perfect vision depending on where you're looking? I understand for people who don't start out with them it takes some getting used to. But since they were the first lenses I wore they were a natural for me. Love photochromatic Transitions lenses, as well! The new XtraActive versions are great for people with light sensitivity. They always have the slightest tint and then change tint readily with the strength of the light they're exposed to. Although I have regular transitions as well. I do have non photochromatic lenses for indoors or night time, especially for night driving. 😎
I'm so glad you've found lenses that work well! Thanks for sharing!
@@DoctorEyeHealth are Photochromic lenses good while driving car? Do they pose any risk or inconvenience during driving?
@@cf116 Most won't darken in the car as the car windows block the UV light that causes them to darken. I have a set of clip-on sunglasses that I use in the car instead. Some are designed to work inside of a car but they don't get fully clear.
Once again, Thank you so much! You are my guide through the sea of options while buying glasses online.
Great video Doc. I have a -3.25 and -3.5 with -1 of astigmatism in each eye and I just recently received my new glasses with the 1.69 index. Way lighter and thinnner than the polycarbonate ones I used to have! Feels great on the face. Also ordered a slightly lower perscription ( lower by 0.25 in each eye) for computer with Blue Light blocking. I find that computer usage requires less lens power to see clearly than other activities. I then have to switch back when looking for. But at least I don’t mind!
Recommend Acelool
will the anti-reflective coating wear off from washing with soap?
I just glasses for the first time last month and I have to admit that I love them so far. I ended up getting polycarbonate lens and I see great with them. It took about two weeks for me to get used to them. I just bought some CR-39 glasses so let’s see how they compare to this one.
how'd they compare?
Great video. You explained everything perfectly.
Your information are very helpful ( I did watch all the three videos) since I'm getting new pair of glasses ! Thanks 👍
Fantastic!! Let us know how everything goes!
A very informative video. Incidentally, I just received my very first Trivex lenses and had a little surprise on its "yellowish" color nature, not too sure if this is typical.
Thank you Dr. Eye Health, that was very Informational. I didn't know about the different Lens Types that are available.
I've been a polycarb lens wearer for years, and I really like them. I am a big fan of the photochromic lenses, too, since my glasses are always on my face. I've never misplaced my sunnies. :)
Thanks for all this information - I've been wearing glasses for almost 40 years and I am always learning from you. I appreciate it!
Thanks so much Shannon! Glad to hear you have done such a good job protecting your eyes!
Hands Down... One of the most genuine and engaging eye doctors on the planet!! I learn something every single video. Thank You, teaching us whenever you can. Truly appreciate you.
I enjoyed the way you explained the lens, I sell glasses everyday and know a lot of about theses lens already except trivex lens, we don’t sell those in my store but now I can explain the difference between those and polycarbonate lens better. I also never knew polycarbonate lens have color distortion on the sides I have glasses with poly and hi index lens and the main difference far as seeing is hi index gives a immediate clearer view.
I don't need glasses in the slightest, I don't know why I'm here but I like the videos ! Keep up the great work
Thank you so much for your channel it's a big help to us.
So much great information in this video. 😊 7:53 Something to be aware of with high index lenses is that, the higher the index the lower the Abbe value, which means you're going to see more chromatic aberration (colour fringing) around the edges of the lenses. Some high index lenses have an Abbe value as low as 31, which isn't great for the clarity of the lens.
Thanks for the info!
I thought something was wrong with my prescription, just turns out they are so high that I get these strong color shifts even in the middle of my vision if the lights are bright enough. Extremely noticeable on my color cycling RGB RAM sticks in my pc, the reds shift physically shift position and make it look like its moving.
@@Nccp9 Unless you have very strong prescriptions and want as thin lenses as possible, go with CR-39 next time. CR-39 has an Abbe number of 59, higher than the eye, so no colour fringing and also a lot cheaper than high index lenses.
@@spajdude I have -6.5 in both eyes, so I'm stuck getting polycarbonate :(
@@Nccp9 no you arent! you can get trivex which is a direct competitor of polycarbonate but offers higher abbe numbers and the most clarity while also having the impact resistance of poly! I have astig. and -6, -7 on my eyes so I also have a strong perscription but you are not limited on your options!
I am so thankful for your videos. I wish you were my eye dr! I am having to educate myself because I am tired of settling for whatever the eye dr has on hand atm. Also, I would like to save money. So, in order to do that I am trying to order online. I have a lot of questions. Thankfully, you have a lot of videos. I feel that you are very honest, knowledgeable, & trustworthy. So glad I found you!
Thank you for those kind words. I'm so glad you've found these helpful! A glasses series has been a long time in the making. I'm glad to be getting this information out there for people.
Thanks a lot doc. I'll keep an eye on you 😘😆
👍😁
Can you please do a video entirely about progressive lenses (how to best use them, opinions about them etc.)? That would be fantastic!
I have always used glass lenses; they are readily available at either vision center in my town. Comes at a premium cost, but they last forever. I have relatively stable vision, and the pair that I just moved off from was ten years old. The lenses and titanium frame are still in perfect condition. Now in a bifocal with photochromic glass.
Completely agree. But I've had a hard time finding anyone who still works with glass. Where have you found glass, photochromic replacement lenses?
Super helpful. Thank you!
amazing video!
Thank you a lot
Really very informative for me cause glasses are my passion 😍
How very helpful! Thank you.
Dr. Allen, I am really hoping you will make a video about "progressive lens options", especially those that are digitally designed. My recent discussions with a number of opticians were about new digital progressive lenses, supposedly superior (and more costly) than earlier ones. They were described as being "top tier" or "premiere" because they are individually designed for a patient's specific prescription, and have a better range of vision levels than older lenses. What are your thoughts about this new technology? Really hoping to hear your perspective before I purchase :-). Thank you.
i learned a lot from you, Thanks.
Thank u doctor.....For guiding about the lenses....
Your explanation is so good as always. I like your videos, also i just wanna say hi, i'm optometrist too

@@DoctorEyeHealth my eye power is -12 in right eye and -14 in left eye so which lens should i use u tell me
Hello, in October I started being through laser sessions due to retinal tears. Soon after I began seeing these bright spots (which later I found out to fit perfectly with the blue field entoptic phenomenon); not to mention an increase in floaters. Any thoughts on what could have caused it? Thanks for the informative content :)
Hey Danilo. Thanks for sharing that. Tough to say why you are seeing the blue field entoptic phenomenon after all that. But very interesting because I see it too. (really want to do a video on that). Floaters are more common after any eye surgery, particularly a retinal surgery. But changes to the vitreous gel and growth of floaters do often cause retinal tears as well.
Great informative video, thanks
Thanks for talking about the Abby value, always something I noticed but never knew the name of.
It is written Abbe though ;)

Acetate plastic frame to cover edge of high myopia, 1.67 MC with Transitions but here’s my twist, single vision freeform lens to increase my field of view in the lens to stop the extra astigmatism in the corners of the lenses hehe
Sounds like some great ideas!

Ty for doing these
No doubt you were super helpful! Thanks!!!
You're welcome!
As an optician I've used all of them and my go too material's are 1.67 or CR39.
Same here!
Really helpful. I have massive chromatic aberration with poly lenses (I have transition and progressives). Lenscrafter gave me poly lenses and I didn't know better until I tried them, and I returned them. My old glasses have Zeiss CR-39 and I had zero issues. I may go back to LC and ask for CR-39 since they have a nice frame I like.
@@windsurfer_LA Thank you. I went back to LC and asked for CR-39 lenses, so now I'm waiting to get them, hopefully they will work, this will be my 6th trip to them (luckily they are very close).
I told them about the chromatic aberrations and they kept trying different poly lenses .. obviously didn't work, and I didn't know any better at the time. You'd think *they* would know 😕
Anyway, the information in your videos has been very interesting and helpful - thanks again.
@@levon9 it worked?
@@whoisalisson Yes, perfectly - I'm sort of shocked no one at LC or their optician had any clues about this - even after I explained this to them.
Interesting, but as far as materials you left one out. You can tell me about plastic, but with 50 years of trying all the different lenses, I still like glass. With my high Rx, I do end up with thick and heavy lenses. I also like large lenses that help with my side vison, so the edges have got real thick. I still like the quality and durability of real glass. Takes longer, but it is worth it.
Great work! New subscriber! Greetings from DR 🇩🇴
I’m getting my glasses this week and I was just curious how they were made
Thanks brother your video helped me much.
Glad to hear that!
I would love you to do a video on Neurolens vs. standard prism lenses. TIA~

Good information.. thanks
Great video thanks
Excellent vid
HAD to laugh when he said having a high glasses prescription was a -2 lol, I have been -6 for years, but I could always see small stuff, but the last 18 months looking at near stuff with my glasses on has been a blurry mess lol. Will have to see about the progressive lenses
@Chelle Bright I’m just got my new rx of -1.25 (Old Rx was -0.75, -1.25 at my last appointment 6 years ago!) but really feel like I can’t read text or discern faces from very far at all. I know I’m lucky and lots of people have higher prescriptions I just feel more blind than I am I guess.
Ohhh so that's why I've noticed those colors blue and orange. Thanks Doc.
Good video. As an old lab techie, I must correct you about stinky Trivex. It is 1.60, 1.67, and 1.76 indexes that stink when you cut them :-)
Docter superb. Glasses for better field vision for glaucoma patients .Thanks
Hi Dr. very good explained...👍...
Thank you. your information
I wish you were my eye doctor 😂 I get better informed with you than in person.
I have a question just changed from rectangular lenses to oval and with first time blue light and already have had them for almost two weeks and on the side of the lenses I see blurry and in the front I see perfectly fine. What do you think it might be?
It could be a “base curve” issue. Sometimes going from rectangular frame into that oval can add more curvature to the material. This is something that can be fixed, if your optical shop has control over their lenses (most do). A blue light filter (or most other coatings) have very little effect on your overall quality of vision. Finally if the base material of your lens has changed it could also be that you aren’t adapting.
I’ve worked in optical for 2 1/2 years in a specialists office. The only real answer to your question is to talk to your DOCTOR or OPTICIAN.
They will be able to give you an actual answer. The things I suggested above are only the cases I typically see.
@@slipknot19968 I have -8 plus 1.5 astigmatism. What do you recommend for lenses? My issue is the high distortion anytime I am moving my eyes. The sides of the lenses are the worst.
@@MiteshDamania your issue could also be material based, or even rx based. Your rx is a little on the high side. Sometimes high myopes don’t like Cyl changes. You’ll definitely have to talk to your doctor and optician, they’ll be able to show you what changes you had since your last visit/purchase.
At my Dioptors...-3.75/-4.50.......i always go for 1.74 index lenses as the look amazing in eyeglass frames. Currently sporting Tom Ford specs with Essilor Varilux X lenses 1.74, and Essilor Sapphire coating. I like a streamlined profile so thick specs are a no go!
That's some good stuff, might get away with 1,67 Index but at that point doesn't make the biggest difference in price.
Poly is also highly corrodible by solvent.
Index 1.6 Is probably one of the best materials for most people.
Ì
Hello Dr.
Much appreciated your technical and professional advice. Could you pl provide some tips on varilux x series for progressive lenses.
Varilux X 1.74 index and Sapphire coating in my new specs is amazing in Tom ford frames.

I was hoping you would cover aspheric lenses as well.

I like CR-39, great quality, high Abbe value! I bought a plastic frame and they were sliding off my nose, lucky for me Amazon sells silicone nose pads and they worked, but next time I'll just get the metal frames.
lmao just go to an optician and get your frame adjusted
@@Dorfmatratze the optician will be really happy to adjust your glasses from Amazon by the way ;)
I recently ordered my first glasses, I use glasses only indoors in front of a computer and sometimes for reading books. Despite my use case, the seller pushed to "Upgrade" for polycarbonate lenses, in case I decide to do sports in my computer glasses. After this video, I understood that for my use case, polycarbonate has only disadvantages - optical quality and scratch resistance for polycarbonate are worse than for CR-39. The cost was not a big issue, I was ready to pay extra since I spent 10+ hours in front of a computer screen every day. I ordered cheaper alternative CR-39 lenses, +1.0 and +1.5, and some special "Eyezn" coating with blue light blocking that is designed for computer use. I am very satisfied, needed those glasses for a couple of years if not longer. All that consultant told me is that polycarbonate is overall better than cr-39, so I should upgrade to that material. After this video, I understood that standard cr-39 lenses have other advantages on top of cheaper prices, but sellers will tend to "upsell" more expensive options no matter what your use case is.
It's not just upsell. Many people just biased due to personal limited experience with glasses.Or simply not good at listening customers...
Hi Dr, can you please also elaborate on blue filter coating ? Also digital lens that comes with low addition that claimed can give some sort of ‘relax’ to the eyes ? Thanks for the great info anyway ☺️
Blue light filters improve contrast since the human eye doesn't do too well with blue light.
The low addition lens he mentioned is useful for using you smartphone or reading, since you eyes don't need to adjust to the close distance (think of the lens on a camera)
You mentioned that poly carbonate is soft and easy to scratch, but you did not speak of the hardness or scratch-ability of high index or Trivex. at this point scratch resistance is my biggest concern. If the lens is too soft, I believe that compromises any scratch resistant coating as well.
Mr8 can be a good options over poly what I feel still in less budget...but yes they are not as strong as poly ..
Good episodes doc
🙏🙏 Good tip!
@@DoctorEyeHealth thanks
Very informative video
Glad you think so! Thanks Kabeer!
Your glasses look really good on you!
I have two pairs, one is fixed mostly just for astigmatism and fairly standard, but I'm farsighted, and find they don't do things quite right for near use at long amounts of time. I had Activate Progressive lenses as a teen, but couldn't wear them outside very well since I couldn't see the ground when hiking, so I didn't want that, but I just got newer ones not too long ago that are whatever the new name for Activate is, but with lesser magnification, Crizal lenses, and the computer coating, which are fantastic! They're great for detailed things like hand sewing and using the computer, which is really important for online school, and thankfully insurance covered quite a bit. I like having two pairs of glasses athough it sucks that I can't wear my reading glasses with contacts in, that would be easy. But no contacts exist that are weak enough for my right eye, so having one contact lens isn't ideal for long amounts of time anyway, so I only wear it when I'm using sunglasses, or going places where I don't want to deal with glasses.
Wow! Such great info! Glad to hear you found something that works! I agree it is a bit frustrating that contact lenses aren't made for smaller prescriptions.
Would like to see a video on the pros and cons on selecting eye glass lenses from EnChroma, Spectraspecs or Axonoptics versus buying from an Optical store and employing all your suggestions made in your videos. This is for patients who have Glaucoma. Thank You.
Thank you Dr Allen
Great education on lenses. I perhaps be OK with Progressive. Trivex n high index sound very appealing, don't know cost differential with progressive. Good day sir
Hi so I just got contacts, and the solution it came with burns my eyes it's the Bosch and Lomb biotrue solution, do you have any recommendations that won't burn when putting them in.
Hi please advise me which will be best type of lens/frames for high myopia my prescription is -10 sph, -1 cyl and 170 axis.
wow very good presentation
I have an Rx of -9.50 / -11.50 and usually have to get 1.74 hight index lenses. Is there any other lens that is thinner than that? Also to make it more complicated due to age (54) I also have presbyopia (+2.50) for reading. Any recommendations? I was told that I have to have progressive lenses and can not use a bifocal lenses. Is that still the case? Thank you for your great videos. Very instructional and helpful. Thanks again.
I got the cheapest lenses to save money and with my left eye being -5.75 and my right eye being -6.25 with an astigmatism of 180 in both eyes. I really should go with high index, and that’s what I’m going todo when I need a new prescription
High index are expensive and if you have a high prescription you will benefit tremendously from a lighter and more responsive lens. The extra cost in that case is definitely worth it. If you have a low prescription like most people have, you won’t see any appreciable difference from a standard lens.
Hey I have a question does myopia effect the perception of distance? I mean even if I were to wear glasses, does my brain have a poorer perception of distances in general? Or is that mechanism independent to myopia?
Is round glasses good for someone with high myopia? And also I have bad chromatic aberration so I will try the trivex lens next time, thank you
Great 👍 Vedio thanks for what ur doing
