This is the best I've seen at showing examples of what Astigmatism looks like in the real world. The ghosting of letters (especially on a digital screen) is spot on!

I wish I had known this about ten years ago. They gave me glasses with a high axis, and I could not wear the glasses due to the severe ghosting, but they told me the glasses were fine, that the axis shouldn't make a difference. And I paid a lot for the glasses. In later prescriptions the axis was lower, and I could see well out of them.

I was told I had astigmatism when I was 8 years old but I had 20/20 vision until I was in my mid 30’s. I got glasses when I was 37 and it was mind blowing. I could see blades of grass and single leaves on a tree. I thought I could see until I put those glasses on.

Thank you Dr. Allen. I have astigmatism and had the cataract astigmatism correction, but still needed glasses. Now I understand the reason for still needing those glasses. Everyone I know, had their cataract surgery and don’t need glasses so I was very upset to find out I need glasses. I watch all of your videos and they’ve been very helpful

I have astigmatism in one eye. The same eye that has a strangely shaped optic nerve. When I don’t wear my bifocals, everything looks super short, and I feel like a giant. I also get side-to-side ghosting. My son inherited it from me, but his makes everything look fatter and wider.

I'm 47 now. My great uncle was an optometrist and gave me an eye exam when I was like 9 or 12. ( can't remember exactly, but one of the two ) He told me that I was most likely going to be nearsighted, and would probably need glasses when I got older. He didn't give an acuity rating, mainly just wanted me to be prepared for that as an eventuality. Ffwd to a few years later. When I was 19, or 20, I got a job that involved a lot of reading paperwork. To make matters worse, the lighting in the place, was all flourescent lights. Hard on the eyes. I started getting really intense eyestrain headaches, and was encouraged to see an optometrist. She informed me that the myopia had manifested, as predicted by uncle, and rated me 20/20 in the right, and 20/40 in left. She went on to tell me that I also had astigmatism in the left eye, as well. She also found, whilst examining my inner eye, that something else was likely contributing to the overall issue. After i.e.e. she asked me if I had ever been exposed to any particularly bright flash photography, or if had ever looked at a solar eclipse with my bare eyes. I said DOH!!!, and she was like which one? I told her the eclipse, when I was 14. She said " why would you do that. They tell you not to ". To which I responded " I was only looking it through my left eye and was shading it w/my hand directly over it. Basically looking in between my fingers through a narrow slit. Glad I was only using the one eye. I was living in Wallace Id., in the summer of 1991, which was in the path of totality. That meant that the light of the Corona is exposed/isolated, which is very dangerous. I thought by looking through my fingers, I would be OK. OOPSIE... They tell you not to do so for a good reason. You don't feel a thing. No pain at all. Thinking back, I remember that my vision was wonky, following the eclipse. It looked like ripple in water that was frozen. Fuzzy in the very center, followed by a ring of clarity, and another ring of fuzziness. I had burned a hole through the back of my retina, and into the fovial layer, which damaged the nerves in that area, PERMANENTLY, leaving me with a small dead spot in the center of my visual field. In spite of the damage, however, given the chance I would TOTALLY do it again. ( I know, DUMBASS!!! ) It was without a doubt, however, one of the most awesome things I have ever bourne witness to. Absolutely beautiful. Most likely a once in a lifetime event. For me at least... I only regret it a really little bit... thank you for this video. Kids... do not EVER!!!, look at a total eclipse directly, without a welding mask/goggles, or at least some eclipse glasses...

This was very, very informative. I have a background in optics, so I was very interested in the subject after being recently made aware of my severe astigmatism. I thought everyone saw those weird streaks and comas on lights and the blurring of trees. Knowing more about the physical and physiological details has helped me a lot.

I was informed I had Astigmatism 30+yrs ago by my eye MD, but not what kind; thinking it was probably the, "With the Rule" type, but will ask at next eye exam (changed MD dt relocation). This was so much more helpful than all the other material I'd read or even been told (ie, your eye is egg-shaped instead of round/youreye is too big🙄)➡thanks very much for this espec since I can imagine it took lots of time & energy to put it together!!

I went from both eyes being slightly far nearsighted to suddenly having Astigmatism . My friend had that for as long as I knew him but I never thought anyone with pretty normal eyes would suddenly get that without any injury or anything causing it. Obviously I knew nothing about Astigmatism . I first noticed something was wrong when I could not read my pill bottles. So I went to see the eye doctor and found out that I now have Astigmatism . Mine is side by side but also a little angle. Driving at night and during rain is hell for me and bright lights on cars.

I have had bilateral astigmatism with keratoconus for most of my life and have tried glasses, soft lenses, combo lenses, and RGP lenses none being fully successful in correcting my vision. I have been told by my doctors that I am not a candidate for lasik that is available in the states and I will need a cornea transplant eventually. This video's examples were pretty accurate of my vision and have helped me to understand what is going on and also what types of treatment to look into that I was not aware of, THANK YOU!

Thank you! I appreciate that. Peripheral defocus is not a new concept. There are some very fascinating ideas around different levels of defocus hitting on the superior retina vs the inferior and how that influences eye growth. I hope to have several videos this fall on Myopia and the theories.
As far as TBI rehab, part of my residency at the VA included TBI rehab, so I have some experience with it. I was able to see many patients improve with vision therapy protocols.

The genetic component is interesting. I recently got diagnosed with an astigmatism at age 26. I have Native American ancestry on both sides of my family. I’ve always said that my dad’s side had strong Native genes as my eyes will squint a lot when I smile or laugh to the point that they almost disappeared. I’ve even been asked if I have Asian ancestry because of my eyes. So it kinda makes sense to me. Although no one has told me what type of an astigmatism I got. I do need to visit the optometrist soon.

So many times I have had eye doctors suggest that I have blurry vision, astigmatism.
The ghosting is much more like my vision. It is not blurred but multiple images vertically in each eye. Ghosts yes but the 2nd image is 90% as dark, so hardly a "ghost" the 3rd and 4th are fainter. Oh and the different images spread out, "vertically" the more tired I am, or the more tired my eyes are.
Never got a proper DX as optometrists seem panicked when I have multi images in each eye.

Thank you. I did find the videos discussing "what are cataracts & what causes them" and the video about "what steps to take before & after surgery." They were very helpful. I don't mind having to wear glasses after surgery, if I have to, I just want my eye to come out of the surgery as healthy as possible & don't want to spend money on a lens to correct astigmatism "if" the lens really does not benefit me at all. If a specialized lens will benefit me, & I still have to wear glasses, then I am okay with that. I just want to know all the "ifs," "ands," or "buts," so I can make the most informed decision. `i can't be the only person in baby boomer generation facing with this decision.

Yet another question coming your way! I have pronounced astigmatism in my left eye. The last perscription I got is perfect for the right eye, but the left is still blurry. I was told that "the eyes are supposed to work together" and that the blurriness was acceptable. I worry that I wouldn't pass a driving vision test if made to cover my right eye and read tiny letters -- my state allows for only one mistake when they make you re-take the eye exam. Do I have any recourse? Should I go to a different eye clinic?

lazer barrage to treat retinal vein occlusion changes the shape of the eyeball and causes a form of astigmatism -- manifests as double vision because each eye shows a different point of focus.

I have astigmatism & glasses have taken care of it. However I had ocular migraines for many years with usually only mild headaches. Now it’s progressed to hemiplegic migraines with aura & only mild headaches but all the symptoms of stroke. I have aura several times daily, drooping mouth on right side, sometimes it gets worse & goes into paralysis on entire right side then in really bad attacks it spreads to left side. Slurred speech & sometimes can’t speak @ all. On one occasion it progressed to a hemiplegic migraine stroke. Very rare I was told. Gave me clot buster drugs. I recovered but have permanent droop on right side of mouth & short term memory deficits. Still have 2 to 4 attacks daily but with meds they are not as often severe.

I had slight astigmatism until my 30’s and was able to wear contacts without a problem. Once my astigmatism got worse, I could no longer find the right contacts that had me see clearly. Since I was buying my contacts through my eye doctor’s office, he no longer wanted me as his patient. He said he couldn’t do anything more for me. 😢

(Note: I've been to several surgeons including Moran Eye Center in Utah, and nobody has ever talked about these different details, despite me trying and trying to get more info.)

    Hi!
    Very informative video.
I was diagnosed with astigmia in the last 2 years. I have myopia in both eyes (-3.25,-3.75)-0.25 in one eye and -0.50 in the other. (Cylinder)
At the moment I have no luck even with the simple lens(no cylinder),because I see everything in a curve both vertically and horizontally. As a consequence I am constantly feeling sick and falling...Unfortunately I have been to a neuroophtamologist because of this, but so far everything seems to be fine.
Could you or could you give me some advice?
( I have been wearing glasses for a very long time, but there has been no improvement and I can't feel the ground either - rising, sloping).
The whole lens is bulging not just at the edges. It's like a big fat belly.
    I'm 35 now and I've had glasses since I was 12, I didn't have this problem before until 3 years ago. 😢

I had an infection of the retina where my vision has been impaired and what I see is like looking through a glass with light tea or coffee. Things are darker and oftentimes straight edges look crooked.

I wouldn't say my vision is blurry, but the ghosting illustration is fairly accurate, especially on high contrast (black on white) but less on softer contrast type. Also driving at night is challenging for sure. Can the astigmatism change hour to hour? I just got my first glasses and they are for a newly diagnosed astigmatism, I use them for driving, but I don't need them every day and sometimes they are absolutely necessary! Also sometimes I NEED reading glasses, but other days I can still read even tiny type very clearly. (I am 52)

I went to USZ - Universitätsspital Zürich: Zurich hospital which is a university hospital with severe eye blurriness. I demanded lasik and the very elderly professor refused to do any work on my eye- he said vision problems were the result of neurological issues of the brain not adjusting to the change in image and reforming the image no matter the deformity of cornea. At age 80 he wore no glasses and was still an ophthalmologist surgeon.
I had one exercise to do daily every day- hold a pin, or sharp pencil, or a hair as close to my eyes as possible (in front of nose) where I could still focus well on it - then slowly moving the small object away, always maintaining focus. Then return the object to in front of nose as close as still in focus. Do this for ten minutes.
The other contraption was 500-20000mL soda bottle cap with a pin-hole made in It (by a heated up unbent paper-clip- the surgeon still smoked a pipe). I had to use this pinhole bottle-cap monocle all day: a piece of cardboard with a pin-hole punched in- I had to "wear" that single hole spectacle all day. My vision is now 20-20 from hypermy tropia and astigmatism- I also suffered trauma to eyes from chemical burns and strikes with wood and metal. Never had retina damage, thank God, and always wore safety welding glasses (no the safety "squint" and turn away as you spot in a tacking weld). People forget the brain interprets what the eye sees- sometimes part of vision correction si- i.e. corneal input and tomogrpahy.t

I heard that if I’m squinting my eyes all the time it will cause my eyes to have astigmatism. Is this true from your findings? If so if I really try hard to not squint will that improve my vision in the future?

I definitely have the "ghosting" effect (up and down), I don't notice long streaks of light though. Usually light sources are multiple round fuzzy balls (I also have myopia) that can be slightly oval shaped.
One of my oldest prescription from when I was a kid only had -0.50D of cylinder but today it's -2.00D CYL. I wore contacts from ~2005-2008 and they were of the soft type. There was no dash on them so I assume they only were spherical ones. They were pretty small too and was monthly contacts (so I just put them back into the plastic container with the solution and the next morning I cleaned them off with a new solution from the bottle). It was pretty pricy iirc, ~$100 a month or so (my memory might be failing me, unsure if they came with one or multiple packages).
Sometimes after extended periods of use it was difficult to take them out and occasionally I accidentally touched my eyeball directly thinking I had contacts in when I didn't.
My speculation why my astigmatism got worse is I might have caused "wear and tear" of my cornea. If I continued to exclusively using glasses instead it might have not gone that much worse.
    I haven't worn contacts since 2008.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  11 месяцев назад +3

That is an interesting idea. Although I have not seen any published evidence of soft contact lens wear leading to worse astigmatism. I could imagine RGP lenses maybe having an influence in the cornea.

  • @anniegerard577
    @anniegerard577 7 месяцев назад +2

Are you more likely to develop strabismus with astigmatism? I feel like one of my eyes wanders outwards but I can’t tell if it’s visible or if it just feels that way since that’s the eye with more astigmatism? I only feel it without my contacts in and when looking far away.

I've had astigmatism requiring glasses since I was a toddler. I know when I was a toddler the eye doctor put me in glasses whose prescription got changed every 6 months that improved my vision so by the time I was 10 or 11 my eyesight was much better. But now every eye doctor says its very unlikely for my vision to change but every two years I need new lenses because my right and left eye have different distortions and the balance is constantly changing. Just today I got retinal tomography imaging done and this new eye doctor wants me to try progressive lenses because well he said the new lenses might help my intermediate and near vision in my right eye so the power stops getting worse. Doesn't feel great to basically need bifocals at 23 years old. Tried contact lenses when I was a teenager but having oblique astigmatism my vision was worse with contacts.
