😂. I have ZERO attachment to Bushnell. Maybe I should reach out to them for some product reviews. I have never received anything from them and have bought the Bushnell's on my own dime. They actually do make some very decent optics.
Bushnell has very bad business ethics when it comes to warranty and customer service. They have an F rating according to the BBB for screwing over way too many of their customers over warranty disputes not wanting to actually honor their own warranty. Been ongoing for more than a decade.
The image quality on the razor spotting scopes is out of this world. Every time I let another shooter use it, they’re blown away at the clarity and their ability to spot trace. Well worth the money! Great review as always man.
Being my first spotting scope , I went with the Vortex Diamondback 20-60-80 angled and the Vortex High Country tripod and spent out the door right under a grand. A good tripod is not cheap either ! Great video on the subject 👍
Thanks Ray... about two weeks ago I was going through all the shipping containers that I used to store all the shooting and racing things in at our Warehouse Complex in Houston, because we provided environmentally controlled storage for none other than Uncle Sugar etcetera... and the vault marked " Champions Choice " was quite the letdown. All the Kowa spotters and positional supplies was not there, and my Dad had gorgotten in the later years to tell anyone where that stuff was.... Guess that I should have kept another stock clerk for that. Sooo... I went straight to your page to see what you were trying out... lo and behold this video! Nice job, Ray! I have owned the Burris Signature now for about 5 years... paid $2,300 for it then, plus the reticle eyepiece was another $250! I think it is top tier glass and focusing , but damn it is heavy! But it is just amazing for static spotting at the range. I am going to check out your favorite Leuopold...would be the nuts for PRS! I'm really happy with the burris signature hd with reticle. The mount for the fastfire is just icing on the cake. Baffles me why most spotting scopes don't offer a reticle option. They offer 5 million differnt eyepieces but no reticle eyepiece.
I got a Vortex Razor gen1 20-60x about 5 years ago and love it. Actually chose it over the gen2 not only because it was discounted but because it has the focus knobs like the Burris which I much prefer over the focal ring that the gen2 uses. Also the eyepiece does have a lock on it like the Burris and can’t believe yours doesn’t for that price. I think you can still find gen1 Razors floating around at very good prices. I also purchased the fixed 30x mil reticle eyepiece for it for $300 (five years ago) although it was hard to find and don’t know if they are still available. The gen2 eyepiece is not compatible w/ the gen1. Thanks for the informative vid!
I have the Vortex Viper spotting scope, and bought the fixed 33.5x mil eyepiece off ExpertVoice for less than 150 dollars a few years ago. While it was nice to be able to make exact calls, I just hated having such high magnification at all times, especially during summer time when mirage is an issue. Went back to the normal eyepiece and just mil my targets with my regular scope if the sizes are unknown.
Imo the vortex viper HD is a good middle ground. I have had the Bushnell, and it was nice with the retical, but clarity drove me nuts on the higher powers. If most of your shooting is under 1k, it's great for that. If u do get the vortex viper HD and want a ratical, make sure u buy the 85mm bc the retical will not fit the smaller version. Lover the video, as always, you did a great job.
a big decider is the FFP vs fixed magnification. a friend's razor with a reticle at fixed mag is nice, but my bushnel with magnification always seems to be favoured, except when it is low light or really overcast. there is an athlon cronus with FFP reticle that has quite good ED glass (currently discontinued now, i believe).
On this end of the price/performance spectrum the Horus HoVR™ 6.5-40x50mm is very good. I had the Leupold but my sample wasn't great, and I would definitely buy the Horus over another Leupold. Meanwhile, I'm getting by with a Hendsoldt Spotter 45 ;-)
The Hendsoldt units are really nice. Going to try to compare it to the Swaro when I get back from the Accuracy International match this weekend. Thanks for commenting.
Ray, thanks very much for this walkthrough. 20/15 in L, 20/10 in R eyesight at 52 yrs old? What's your secret, man? Great genes? You chugged that uphill 50yds pretty crisply too. Holy cow. My eyesight was about that good until late teens early 20s, 4 decades ago. And please don't ask me to run uphill 50 yds on knees that both had ACL reconstruction 2 to 4 decades ago, depending on which one.🤣

Before all of the current and today's popular shooting disciplines came in to being, I need a spotting scope for local range use. The optics reviewer on Optics Talk recommended the mid-priced Vortex Viper HD line. I purchased a VPR-65S-HD. With the recommended Vortex eye piece I purchased the power range is 15X-45x. Since I'm not planning on shooting any of the long range games that your target audience does, this spotter works for me. I don't think a reticle eye piece is available for it. The scope is no longer in production. But, as usual, Ray, an excellent review. The Leupold unit looks to be very popular with the mil people I know.
I've always wanted to buy the razor HD and then add the reticle eye piece but seeing the Leupold mark 4 had caught my attention with 1st focal panel reticle might the best option since I only do nrl22, the local club had crappy spotting scopes.
The Razor HD is a really nice unit. If all I was doing was shooting PRS and NRL 22 matches, I might be inclined to go with the Razor. I now have a set of the Vortex Vipers on the way and will let everyone know how that one performs.
Great video as always! I’m playing with an ATN LVT digital scope now. The digital is different but interesting A con again is battery but it has day/night mode an does come with IR light
I have the angled Viper 20-60X85. Its a solid scope. Very clear, maybe a little fuzz on the edge. Plenty of magnification. Generally back it off to about 45 powder to cut mirage. I have considered purchasing a reticle but have not yet. I prefer the angled version to keep it lower on the tripod.
Ray, it would be helpful if you provided links to the products you are reviewing. Not sure, but optically, I say these all pale in comparison to the Kowa TSN-88 or the Mavin S.1A spotting scopes. Checkout the Marvin RF.1 rangefinder, I’ve ran mine beyond 2,000yds and it’s good for 4,000yds. You won’t be disappointed!!!!
I run a Celestron C90 astronomy cassegrain telescope The limited use of a spotting scope drives me nuts. Regular spot scopes are for newborn users. Might as well use binos
I'm like Gavin in thay I dont have a 7mm so the PRC it is for me. A custom 7mm Rem Mag would run into magazine length issues when setting the bullet out of the case
I have an older Kiowa 27x spotting scope. Kowa doesn’t carry my model any more. Does anyone build a eyepiece that would fit those older Kowa scopes? It has really nice glass.
One big benefit of angled scopes is that multiple people, of differing heights, can use it without having to adjust the height on the tripod and find the target again.
Very true. Now without sounding too selfish. When I go to a stage and setup my gear I don't have an issue with anyone using my spotter or binos IF I am not using them or need them at the moment. Also, my rule of thumb is don't touch the eyepieces and change the individual focus on them.

I would say the best option might be the Vortex or the Burris if 2k is your max. You will be able to see impacts easily on steel but it will be tough to see paper. Go with an 85mm objective if 1k is really your need. Nothing wrong with a Kowa at all.
Ray I'm in the market for a real good spotting scope with a MIL reticle. The money isnt the object real.Will Spend 2 -3 Thousand. I shoot ELR King of 2 Mile Matches.I have a cheap $500.Vortex HD, My shooting partner has a Sightmark with a Reticle.Its not too good either.I was able to borrow a friend Vortex Razor with Reticle last month and called impacts out to 4,227 yards for my partner. So Vortex Razor is a good one.I have a TRACT Toric ELR scope on my 33XC and I like the glass in it.TRACT has a Spotting Scope witha Reticle..MIL or MOA choice in 22x & 30x. Have you been able to look thru a TRACT Spotting Scope.Their Reticle is on the Top & Right Side to not cloud the center. Id like your input please.Happpy Easter
So i just jumped the gun and picked up a Vortex Razor HD 16-48x65 Angled Spotting Scope at Cabelas on sale for like 520$. Ive never looked through one, but i just figured i couldnt get anything remotely close to 1300$ for 520 again. Have any experience with those? Just looking for spotting at clinton house on the 1k and possibly the mile. Think that will work?
Ooooof. That is a great idea but I would need to round those up. I really only have RRS, Leupolds and Manfroto tripods at the moment. Oh, and one NF tripod that was probably the worst decision I ever made. 😆
Coming from photography background, high end optics is also a suckers game just like high end cameras. A small cheap drone sucker punches all these fancy expensive optics.
My new Razor HD eye piece definately does not jiggle like that and it locks in place...I've been wondering about getting the MIL eye piece for it but am concerned about loosing the full magnification, especially cause my eyes arent the best.
Have you tried the sight mark spotting scope. Could you give me some I fo on it. I've heard it was a very good quality scope close to the high dollar ones. A reply would begreat.
@@XRING you should give this sightmark 20x60x80 spotting scope a try. It has millradian reticle. Clean clear glass to see 1,000+ yes. Can see mirage. 80x objective let's in lots of light. Great field of view. First focal plane. Not as good as a $2500 scope but at a 1/3 of the cost it's very capable of spotting long range. Excellent quality for the money. Sightmark latitude 20x60x80
I am and have used many of them. They work well if you can get to the target and place the camera. However, many of the ranges that I use for long range don’t have access down range. It’s either too steep for a vehicle or too muddy to drive to the targets.
That’s a great question. Since this video I have gotten the STR 80 as well as the Zeiss Harpia. The Leupold is very hard to beat for sheer size and field of view. However, my biggest complaint is that there isn’t a reticle focus for the Leupold. Only a field of view focus. The STR is amazing and fills the void of when I want and don’t want a reticle. However, there isn’t a soft case available anywhere for the STR-80. It’s crazy they don’t make one for it as expensive as the STR-80 costs.
@@XRING Durability was my biggest concern for the STR 80. I might just grab it and see if we can scan and 3d print a silicone cover or carbon fiber case for it. Did you notice a big difference in glass quality between the two?
@@donvirgo Well, I have seen the STR-80’s take a LOT of abuse. Frank Galli with Snipers Hide had one that looked like it was dragged behind a truck and was still working perfectly. I also know of two others that have seen a lot of abuse from falling over on tripods etc. However, I know the Leupolds can take crazy abuse and still work fine, plus you can get tons of exoskeletons for them. As far as clarity, it goes to the Swarovski hands down but it’s also almost 2x the price of the Leupold. The size of the Leupold does make it more portable than almost all of the others. I hope that helps.

SO........to follow up. My dumb self never even knew there was a lock ring because the neoprene cover that is always on it has been covering it up. LOL! 😂. I am glad I did the video and learned something !

That accufire thing is a piece of crap. It's digital zoom, not optical. Very lame. Honesty in this video it was very very hard to notice any difference in image quality of the different scopes. Except for the accufire of course which sucks.

The Burris Signature HD is the same Chinese spotter and eyepieces are interchangeable.

Lol 20/200 here and the shape of my lenses won’t allow correction surgery. At least I can read without glasses and do closeup work.

The Burris Signature HD is the same Chinese spotter as the discontinued Vortex Razor Gen 1 RZR-01 and their eyepieces are interchangeable.

Yes, that is a very big upside to some of the digital spotters. The Accufire is also IR compatible and does well with a big enough IR light.
Are they compatible with any of the power tool batteries or can you power them off another external battery?
@@charlesmckinley29 you can use a power pack like for smart phone or ATN make a pack the attaches to your rifle.

I do not like the angled eye piece because of weather and glare from any light source not covered...
Definitely helps to wear a wide brim boonie hat when looking through angled eye pieces.
I just double checked, but my Razor 85mm does have a locking ring on the scope body. The ring has a small ridge and an unlock symbol on it.

No love for the Leupold?
Have you tried the sight mark spotting scope. Could you give me some I fo on it. I've heard it was a very good quality scope close to the high dollar ones. A reply would begreat.

I have never tried or used anything by sight mark.
@@XRING you should give this sightmark 20x60x80 spotting scope a try. It has millradian reticle. Clean clear glass to see 1,000+ yes. Can see mirage. 80x objective let's in lots of light. Great field of view. First focal plane. Not as good as a $2500 scope but at a 1/3 of the cost it's very capable of spotting long range. Excellent quality for the money.

Are you familiar with the longshot LR-3 Long Range Camera or any camera to see shots far away?
I am and have used many of them. They work well if you can get to the target and place the camera.
However, many of the ranges that I use for long range don’t have access down range. It’s either too steep for a vehicle or too muddy to drive to the targets.
Whats the name on the Bushnell?

Debating between the Leupold Mark 4 vs. the Swarovski STR 80 .... any advice?
That’s a great question. Since this video I have gotten the STR 80 as well as the Zeiss Harpia. The Leupold is very hard to beat for sheer size and field of view. However, my biggest complaint is that there isn’t a reticle focus for the Leupold. Only a field of view focus.
The STR is amazing and fills the void of when I want and don’t want a reticle. However, there isn’t a soft case available anywhere for the STR-80. It’s crazy they don’t make one for it as expensive as the STR-80 costs.
@@XRING Durability was my biggest concern for the STR 80. I might just grab it and see if we can scan and 3d print a silicone cover or carbon fiber case for it. Did you notice a big difference in glass quality between the two?
@@donvirgo Well, I have seen the STR-80’s take a LOT of abuse. Frank Galli with Snipers Hide had one that looked like it was dragged behind a truck and was still working perfectly. I also know of two others that have seen a lot of abuse from falling over on tripods etc.
However, I know the Leupolds can take crazy abuse and still work fine, plus you can get tons of exoskeletons for them.
As far as clarity, it goes to the Swarovski hands down but it’s also almost 2x the price of the Leupold.
The size of the Leupold does make it more portable than almost all of the others.

@@XRING Sounds like there are benefits to both! The STR-80 won't make it in time for training, so it looks like I'll have to start with the Leupold... any recommendations on reticle?
Do you have any experience with the bushnell elite with the reticle?
I have used them but have never owed them. The guys that have them seem to really like them quite a bit.
Is that the older razor or the new razor HD? I have the viper HD and it has a lock for the eye peice.

SO........to follow up. My dumb self never even knew there was a lock ring because the neoprene cover that is always on it has been covering it up. LOL! 😂. I am glad I did the video and learned something !
@X-RING Glad I could help, lol, without a lock that would make that spotting scope useless to me since I would constantly be afraid of losing the eye peice. It's good to know it does, in fact, have one.
Have you considered the Revic spotters? They have fixed power eye piece for both of them
I didn’t even know about them. Ironically, I don’t reach out to many companies for products so I have to do what I can. Would definitely consider them to share the information with everyone.
@@XRING yea their video on the reticles wasn't very good but it looks like a MOA in the middle and a mil grid below. I'm waiting for a pdf for clarification.

Yes, for sure. Price point kind of puts it out of range for most. The HENSOLDT 60/45 might give the Swaro a run for its money. 👍🏼

The Hensoldt spotter 60 is in another league, excellent glass and great reticle. The Swaro str is very good just not as good.

Don’t buy a “bargain” spotting scope. The barska I bought before I knew better is useless on anything but its lowest setting.
Bushnell has terrible business ethics when it comes to actually wanting to honor their warranty and have extremely poor customer service that's why they got an F rating according to the BBB for screwing over way too many of their own customers over warranty disputes which has been ongoing for more than a decade.
That accufire thing is a piece of crap. It's digital zoom, not optical. Very lame.
Honesty in this video it was very very hard to notice any difference in image quality of the different scopes. Except for the accufire of course which sucks.
It is very difficult to see the differences using a phone to capture the differences.
@@XRING Yes sir, that is super true. Also the haze and mirage doesn't help the situation either.
