Irene Cara was screwed over by the record company on this song. It spent 6 weeks as the number one song in America and topped the charts around the world. They paid her $183 in royalties that first year and only then she collected about $62,000 by the end of 1984. The record executive from her company went on a smear campaign and virtually ended her singing career in the 1980s. Finally a judge in the 90s awarded her 1.5 million after determining her career had been damaged by this man and she was the victim of misallocated funds

For me the judge should have given her more money like 10 million. Those record executives are evil as they come. By the way Cynthia Rhodes is the dancer in the movie Flash Dance. The movie and the song was a real big deal in the early 80's.

Great song, video, and movie! Jennifer Beals and Olivia Newton John were partly responsible for the leg warmer trend in the 80s. Olivia's "Let's Get Physical" would be a great one to follow this reaction.
If you listen to Irene, without watching the video, she shines even more. She has this beautiful vibrato that she holds. Most singers fake it, but Irene sustains it, and it's gorgeous. (And she's gorgeous.) Wish I hadn't watched this because now I'm going to have to watch the movie again! Gee whiz, you guys!!! What you make me do. :)
If you never seen “ Flashdance” make it must. It inspired an entire generation wanting to become performers, artists, and possible stars. Just a great movie and even better soundtrack capturing a great era. It also rings a tone in my heart of a long lost friend who shared his love of music and dance with all who knew him. I still miss you brother, one day I’ll see you again 🙏🏽💯❤️
Phenomenal movie, amazing soundtrack - I played mine until the cassette broke! Jennifer Beals was /is a wonderful actress. However, Marine Jahan did 80% of the dancing in the film, and I want her to get the credit. Enjoy! Love your reactions!!!
The theme from Flashdance was one of the biggest hits of the 1980s. Her style epitomized the best of the decade. I hope she sets an example for future entertainers. It is sad to hear of her passing. RIP
I would recommend listening to Michael Sembello's Maniac from Flashdance as well. I recall seeing the movie in the theater when it was released. It had a great affect on fashion of that era of the 80s. The movie stars Chicago's own, Jennifer Beals. Irene Cara does have a great voice. Her Fame should be next.
Irene Cara was also the lead in the original version of the movie “Sparkle” and was one of the leads in the original version of the movie “Fame” where she also sings the title song. My favorite Irene Cara song is “Out Here On My Own” from “Fame”. Multi-talented latina with whom I grew up with watching on tv in the children’s show “The Electric Company” . Award winning actress, singer, songwriter and dancer…Iconic 🔥🔥
She really has such a beautiful, powerful voice. I'm always surprised she didn't have more hits than she did. Try "Out here on my own" to give you all the feelings.
Mariah Carey has stated looking up to her and being a fan of the phenomenal Irene Cara. "Flashdance...What a Feeling!" has got to be one of the most triumphant records ever made.
Marine Jahan ( born January 1, 1959, in Versailles, France) is a French actress and dancer. In the United States, she is known for dancing as the body-double for Jennifer Beals in the 1983 film Flashdance
Agree 100%. That scene is imprinted in my mind ever since i saw the movie in the 80's, i was probably 8 or 9. Many have covered it, but NO ONE can do it like Irene. To me still the best moment on the movie.
You guys MUST watch the movie scene at the end of This movie. Her final performance was to this song and she absolutely KILLED it. Yes, this song is great, but her performance made this song even greater!
MG interesting comment but are you talking about Irene Cara or Jennifer Beals.Jennifer did some of the dancing ,but a lot of it was performed by another girl when it was supposed to be being performed by the Jennifer Beal's character.
Irene Cara was the bomb back in the 80's. What a feeling and Fame are her huge hits. She was in the children show Electric Compan. She also made a cameo in the movie DC Cab. The 80's was such a fun time. Oh i have suggestion for another 80's artist for your female fridays...... Sheena Easton.

So many great movie songs in the 70's & 80's. This was a huge radio hit. As others have said, you should check out her song "Fame" (another movie soundtrack).
I can testify that this movie was huge for 1983! The story behind the making of the movie and it's soundtrack is equally worth finding out about (the soundtrack almost didn't happen when Casablanca Records lost a ton of money, due to overspending and had to shut down, causing many of their clients to move to other record labels). The fans loved it; some critics (Roger Ebert) hated it. The song Flashdance won a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Original Song; it won a Grammy Award for Best Album for Original Score.
I was 11 when this hit #1, and I remember singing, "Take your pants off... and make it happen." I didn't know the entire meaning of what I was saying. All I know is my mom wasn't too happy about it. 😅 This was the #6 song of the 80's, so it was a HUGE hit!

Also "Out Here on My Own" was brilliant.
Great song, video, and movie! Jennifer Beals and Olivia Newton John were partly responsible for the leg warmer trend in the 80s. Olivia's "Let's Get Physical" would be a great one to follow this reaction.
They reviewed that one a while back.

@@MChantal76 oh wow! It’s hard to keep up with these two!
🙏
Phenomenal movie, amazing soundtrack - I played mine until the cassette broke! Jennifer Beals was /is a wonderful actress. However, Marine Jahan did 80% of the dancing in the film, and I want her to get the credit. Enjoy! Love your reactions!!!
Yes I def agree, she is a FABULOUS dancer!
I can still remember being a kid cutting the arms of my sweatshirts to look like Jennifer Beals from that movie!!!!! Lol
Jordan's face was priceless. The look every guy had when they realized they might like this chick flick . lol
RIP Irene Cara
The theme from Flashdance was one of the biggest hits of the 1980s. Her style epitomized the best of the decade. I hope she sets an example for future entertainers. It is sad to hear of her passing. RIP
"Flashdance" she's a welder by day and a dancer by night, who dreams of becoming a member of the New York Ballet company
Check out the scene from the movie Fame singing the song “Out Here On My Own”. Powerful, moving song with just her singing while playing the piano!
Irene Cara had the most beautiful voice ❤RIP god bless ❤🙏such a beautiful talented lady ❤
Award winning actress, singer, songwriter and dancer…Iconic 🔥🔥
one of these days you MUST react to The Sisters Sledge "We Are Family"... its the Anthem of the last of the disco-funk genre.
only 6 people like this song??? wow, i am shocked. the world really has lost its flavor. lol
She really has such a beautiful, powerful voice. I'm always surprised she didn't have more hits than she did. Try "Out here on my own" to give you all the feelings.
She sued her record label and got permanently banned.
Great that you finally got to this song guys check out her song fame also a banger!
Irene Cara’s Hot Lunch Jam (the video) from the film Fame (1980) is the jam. The film won two Oscars for it’s music.
Yes, that's a fantastic video.
Probably my favorite song of Irena Cara's from Fame is the ballad "Out Here On My Own" -- she wrings out so much emotion from the song.
@@DJHolte Was just about to say this.
Another amazing Irene Cara song is "Out Here On My Own" from the movie Fame. A must hear!!! It's amazing. Both movies are fantastic!!
I second this!
Agree 100%. That scene is imprinted in my mind ever since i saw the movie in the 80's, i was probably 8 or 9. Many have covered it, but NO ONE can do it like Irene. To me still the best moment on the movie.
This was a huge hit in the 80's and keep in mind Irene Cara was the singer(not in the movie) and Jennifer Beals was the actress/dancer.
Also remember Jennifer Beals had a body double dancer for all the dance scenes.
@@kimyanchus582 Correct. Except, of course, for the close-ups.
She was our girl back in the 80's!
I had the Flashdance and Sheena Easton albums.
Irene Cara has sung hits for numerous movies
Flash dance
Fame
D.C Cab
Sparkle
@@erikagholston6610 Her best!
I agree that Irene Cara has a strong, beautiful voice....she was also great in the movie Sparkle
If you want an amazing female singer listen to KD Lang - "Crying" at the 1993 Concert of Hope LIve. She is a powerhouse!
Agreed!!! Also her cover of Leonard Cohens Hallelujah! Especially when she sang it in Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Olympics
@@meagankelly8755 I was literally watching that before coming here! Loved her in the 80s and love her still
Don't forget Fame 💜 She had a great talent..R.I.P
You Gotta See The Movie Flashdance!!! 👍🏿
Oh man, my wife loved the movie Flashdance and played this song all the time. After 800 times I couldn't listen to it anymore.😄
Dan Hill song Sometimes When We Touch (official video 1994)
On of my absolute favorite songs brings me to tears.
@@serasmile6026 I'm 47 now so I was like 3 when it came out. Thanks to Louella I'm giving an old song a chance that I remember as a kid and it's sooooo f***ing BEAUTIFUL and I'm also balling my eyes out. Reminds me of the one that got away, it WAS my fault, but 20 years later Chris and I are friends and I can't imagine life without him.
Another great song from a movie with this same energy is Dan Hartman's "I Can Dream About You" from the movie "Streets of Fire". Chose the video that has the singing group created for the movie named "The Sorels". It's actually Dan Hartman singing the audio but the do a killer concert performance in the movie. It's Electric. For years I thought The Sorels sang it, only finding out years later it was Dan Hartman. Dan did his own video which is excellent also. You can't go wrong either way.
Here's a link to the Sorels performance for the movie "Streets of Fire"

Great song still played on the radio today.
BTW guys, the woman in the movie footage is actress Jennifer Beals, she's not the singer Irene Cara who actually sings the song. Not sure, but it sounded like you guys got that mixed up. :)
Irene Cara has such an amazing voice, great actress, and song writer who won awards...so talented, you should listen to her song "Fame". I also loved this movie Flashdance, so emotional as I wanted to be Jennifer Beals in the movie. I was so young when this came out and dreamed I could dance like her, this movie was one of the greatest hits of the 80's. What a great era to grow up in, we had other great dance movies like "Footloose" and "Dirty Dancing" w great songs connect to all these movies. So many in the comments mentioned them all!!! 💜💜💜💜
The whole Soundtrak is amazing. The song "Manhunt", is wow....
We will have to check it out
Agreed! Both Flashdance and Fame soundtracks are amazing. A must have.
So many great movie songs in the 70's & 80's. This was a huge radio hit. As others have said, you should check out her song "Fame" (another movie soundtrack).
Great movie songs continued in the 90s but seems to have dipped starting in the 2000s.
This is one of the best “energy build-up” songs out there. One of her other big songs, “Fame” (from the movie by the same name) has the same energy.
That's the magic that some songs from the 70s and 80s have; No matter how much time passes, they remain.
You guys should do a day dedicated to the 80’s. You’ll never run out of good music.
Maybe a week or so
I love this song 🎵 ❤ This song is motivational.
Good cover: New Gen Divas. 🇵🇭
Irene Cara was 1st famous in Fame as both actress and singer.
This New York native peaked here. She won a Grammy 🏆 Leading actress Jennifer Beals from Flashdance presented the award to her 👏
Suggested video 📹 Irene Cara sings Why Me.
Lyrics by Irene Cara and Dean Pitchford. Music by Georgio Moroder.
The next year, 1984, DP wrote Footloose with Kenny Loggins. DP also wrote the screenplay.
As for GM, in the 1970s, he wrote with late Donna Sommer. In 1980, GM wrote Call Me 📞 with Debbie Harry. In 1982, late David Bowie wrote lyrics while GM wrote music to Cat People 🐈 Putting Out Fire 🔥. In 1986, he and Kenny Loggins wrote Danger Zone. The Swiss native was on a roll! 🇨🇭
RIP Donna Sommer, David Bowie
You guys have to listen to Irene Cara sing the song, "Out Here On My Own", from the soundtrack of the "Fame" movie. She blows on that track! Girl can "sang".
You need to see “Flashdance.” Jennifer Beats is excellent. It’s on Paramount Plus.
You need to hear her do the title song from another hit movie she did a few years earlier(1980)called Fame
Great movie and soundtrack. I think i still have it on cassette lol. OK, lets all watch the movie together.
💜
Such a classic! This song always brings me joy.
I had the 45. But the whole soundtrack was great. Irene also sang the theme to the movie FAME.
Flashdance is an amazing movie and every young lady was trying those dance moves , myself included lol. It’s a must watch
I love Flashdance

I remember buying this song on a 45 rpm record shortly after it came out in 1983. I played this record a million times. Never got tired of hearing it. Love your reaction.
Check out Martina McBride "Where Would You Be" she has an awesome voice, the video is live at an awards show.
I’d love for them to check out more Martina McBride!
@@jackie_jrml I think they’ve only reacted to one of her songs, it was a tear jerker & I wonder if that’s why they haven’t come back to her yet?
R.I.P. Irene Cara, you certainly had the passion, and What a Feeling .❤😥
Her singing career came to a halt because of greedy music executives that also stole millions of dollars from her!
Irene Cara was a really popular singer/songwriter in the 80's...Another movie that she did songs for was Fame...Out Here On My Own & the title track from the movie Fame are two awesome songs that she performed
No to mention she is a wonderfull actress too, and her great part as "Coco" in the movie.
Try "Out Here on my Own" if you want to hear Irene sing a ballad. Versatile. Underrated.
Finally! I’ve been waiting for y’all to react to this- my all time favorite number one song of all time! Also Irene Cara my favorite singer after Madonna! Thanks guys for this late birthday gift to me! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Also enjoy the film! Jennifer Beals is so beautiful! God bless you and your family!✝️✝️✝️🙏⚜️🏳️🌈
Happy late birthday 💜
A great time to watch this! RIP Irene Cara. 🙏🏻 I believe you’re dancing in the heavens now.
This song really sums up the overall feeling of hope and possibility of the 80's
True, this was definitely the most optimistic song of 1983.
This song and her song “Fame” from the movie of the same name have the same nostalgia to them for me. Soooo 80s, in a good way. Edit: Flashdance was a pretty decent movie as well, and in my opinion the best song from that movie is “Maniac” by Michael Sembello. I feel like you’ve reacted to it, and even if you haven’t I would be surprised if you’re totally unfamiliar with the song. But if you’re not, you should check it out!
There's also a really beautiful song on this soundtrack called " Lady,Lady,Lady" if you listen to the lyrics carefully it tells the story of the movie.
This movie Flash Dance was one of the most iconic film of the 80s!!! Irene Cara also did the FAME!!! Believe me the movie is also worth it to watch it!!!
Please do Sohyang also when you get a chance, her Bridge Over Troubled Water is You Tube sensation!!!
Great movie & I just love Irene Cara , her voice is amazing . What A Feeling is actually my walking song . Keeps me motivated.
Please keep your videos coming , they are great!
Amber & Jordan, Rip To Actress & Singer Irene Cara Escabera aka Coco from the original Fame Movie!!! My Condolences & Sympathies Go To The Escabera Fam. A New Yorker that made her Cuban/Puerto Rico Pride to the top. Thank U Irene!!! U Will Be Missed But. God Bless The Escabera Fam!!!
rest in peace Irene Cara
RIP to the amazingly talented Irene Cara. This and Fame - best songs of the 80's.
I must admit listening to this song and watching the video almost made me cry. So many parts of my young childhood Miss Irena Cara's voice was apart of. So many times she made me dance and smile when things weren't going all that great for me. RIH Miss Irena Cara rest in Peace knowing that you did what you were put on this Earth to do.
the Feet Scene is from Michael Sembello "Maniac" ALSO from the Movie "FlashDance". This was an era when movie soundtracks were everything. Fame, Flashdance, Footloose, Dirty Dancing, John Travolta, Greece. By extension, Topgun, Bodyguard - great great great soundtracks.
I've got the movie soundtrack on vinyl; original release. Amazing sound overall.
