RIP Laura Branagan. Underated and never got the respect and recognition she deserved.
Yes,I had no idea & got goosebumps when I read she died 2004,only 47...:-(
ruclips.net/video/8mRUZHF0QQM/видео.html
Laura’s biggest hit was her #1 Gloria. Also check out these other hits: Solitaire, How am I Suppose to Live Without You and her version of Power of Love. Sadly she passed away from an aneurysm.
Yes😥😥
No it wasnt. "Self Control" was her biggest hit. Most played on the radio too.
@@martinsv9183 "Gloria" was certified Platinum and "Self Control" was certified Gold, so "Gloria" was the bigger hit when using sales as the measure of success.
@@DrCecil86Do you only count the US as most US people do? In many European countries Self Control was her biggest hit. It was the most selling single in Germany in 1984. Of course there's more power in her vocals in Gloria, but Self Control is one of the signature songs of the 80s at least in Europe...
I definitely think How Am I Supposed To Live Without You is a better choice for showing off her range.
Fun Fact: The video for Self Control was directed by William Friedkin who made The Exorcist in 1973🤯
Laura had such a unique powerful voice! And she was stunning! Check out her song Moonlight on water .
Gloria was a bigger hit, but I think Self Control was by far the better song, and it had one of the best videos of the video era.
Worldwide cumulatively Self Control probably outsells Gloria as it was a bigger hit in many European countries, and it was definitely much bigger in Asian countries than Gloria ... Gloria was bigger in the US/UK but thats it ...
Self Control has to be bigger, as Europe has more than double the population of the US ...
It is interesting to see how the music video evolved from Gloria to this number. Gloria was just a camera on a set while this is a movie with script and direction. The early MTV world was the band in front of a camera while the 80s evolved into concept videos with budgets in the millions.
"The Power of Love" and "Spanish Eddie" was better than "Gloria"
Even after that it didn't get a good recognition
Gloria's version of raf's self control is good.
both stolen from italian singers
She had a very strong voice, and she was georgous. Her husband had passed and she died alone, so sad.
Remember how much competition there was among women in the 80s. Madonna, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Annie Lennox, Tina Turner's comeback....so many more. Laura was big for a few years. Terrific singer, so sad she's gone.
She passed away on August 26, 2004...Gloria was her signature song for sure.
Every time I hear this song, it takes me back in time to 1984. It's a timeless classic.
"The video was filmed in New Jersey and New York City and directed by William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist). Branigan was one of the first artists of the video era to work with an Academy Award-winning film director. She recalled to The Associated Press: 'It was a real experience. He's a great film director. We worked very hard on it.'
"'The song was about losing your self-control to the night or to someone,' Branigan added. 'We had a man representing the night, wearing a mask. There were all these great dancers wearing masks by Willa Shalit. There's a shot where the man comes into my bedroom, taking me into the night. He appears and disappears. MTV didn't play it. They said it was risqué. It was played in Europe and everywhere else. I didn't think it was bad at all.'"
Laura Branigan was a great artist well known in Latinamerica. She even sang songs in other languages.
She was several times in Chile in Festivals and TV shows, and did have a very special friendship with one of our most important tv journalists and entertainers Mr. Raul Matas.
Unfortunately she dies so young and beautiful. RIP Laura Branigan.
Please you have to react to "Gloria".
Regards from Chile! :-)
Guys absolutely a great reaction to a beautiful and talented artist gone too soon. Your next reaction has to be Gloria!!!
The late great Laura Branigan.
This is one of her most understated vocal performances. Check out 'Gloria' as well as her version 'How Am I Supposed to Live Without You', particularly the live version. Michael Bolton wrote it for her and she recorded and released her version before he then went on to release it too.
Sadly, Laura died in her sleep of a brain aneurysm in 2004.
"Gloria" IS a powerhouse number, but "Self Control" shows Laura's emotional nuance.
As others would say Laura had an awesome voice with different ranges that you don't get in this song. She has other songs that show the power of her voice. I saw her in concert and she was even better in person. Her voice went right through me. I believe her best songs are "Power Of Love" "Ti Amo" & "How Am I Suppose To Live Without You." Laura died early at the age of 49. She was just in her prime and she was one of the music industries biggest lost...not so much for the artists...but for us fans!
Not sure what is meant by "underrated" She was quite big in the 80's with a string of hit songs..this one was my fav but "Gloria" is a banger and "Solitaire" etc. She passed away young.
Laura's voice is fantastic on her song "Gloria." If any of you remember the 70s/80s TV show"CHiPs", there's a clip of her performing on that show.
Yes I remember the 70 and 80 tv shows chip's
She was on 'Automan' too. Didn't see her in 'CHiPs'
Hey hey hey, lovely Laura is in the house.
When this came out in 1984 I was 12 years old and....I admit I had a crush on her, lol.
Always loved this song.
From deep in my heart...R.I.P. Laura.
Btw this kind of beat was called "Italo Pop". It originated from Italy...you know, some kind of summer feeling, tourists dancing at open air Discotheques at the beach,...life is good and easy.
And this was actually a cover version. The original version was made by an Italian artist called RAF. Her other hit 'Gloria' was a cover version too, also original by an Italian, the great Italian singer Umberto Tozzi. Same melody but with Italian lyrics.
This one from Laura Branigan was a cover, the original version is of RAF "Self Control" from 1984, who was an Italian singer.
Use to have a crush on her when I was a kid. Gloria should be the one you check out. RIP Laura.
Laura Branigan was an amazing singer, had multiple hits and guest starred in a few tv shows and motion pictures. She left us way too early in 2004 at the age of 52.
Laura Branigan was an Italy's cover singer 😁 Gloria is a cover from a 1980 song by Umberto Tozzi, a very famous talian singer in Italy (Ti amo was his too) Self control is another cover from a 1984 song by Raf (Raffaele Riefoli) another italian singer.
I think Self Control and Gloria are the most iconic songs of all time. Am I going crazy here? I don't know. Timeless.
Im glad you gave credit to Laura Branigan and thanks for commenting on the music video. Im 63 years old and back in the 1980s those videos were very important to us .
Agreed. You want "Gloria" to appreciate her more. Also, you absolutley must hear "Hot Night" by her off the 1984 Ghostbusters soundtrack, absolute banger and one of my favs by Laura. 👍
Laura Branigan The Power of Love. You won’t regret it.
Here in Italy we all know the original Raf hit, my wife who is from south America insisted this was a Laura song but honestly here this version had not much audience, but she was a great artist as I can see now.
This is a cover. The original version was written/sung by a male called "RAF" and was a huge hit in Europe. It was Branigans spiel to cover european hit-songs that were unknown in the US (like Gloria). And you are pretty dead right by pointing out that he music is between disco and techno, because after disco and before techno there was "Italo-Disco" and this song is a premier example of that style of music.
J/Amber, this is one of her 3 top 10 hits!! Her "Gloria" is next for you!!
Gloria is a 💯 must!
Gloria... you're always on the run now...
A very contemporary tune for the 1980s but I more greatly appreciate her more powerful, meaningful romantic tunes including those suggested below. Brannigan was a classically trained singer with enormous talent. If her career had not been cut short, she might have been mentioned among Cher, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera
SHE'S INCREDIBLE...........FOR EVER !
Terrific voice .. w/ 'Gloria' and this tune Laura was the Queen of radio for a few months in the 80s..
#RIP
Gloria, Solitaire, The Lucky One, Ti Amo, Spanish Eddie, the live version of How am I Supposed to Live Without You when she almost breaks down.
So many great songs.
Classically trained voice.
All great songs. Another favorite of mine is shattered glass.
Spanish Eddie! I'd forgotten that one!
Another vote for listening to the song "Solitaire".
self control, gloria and others are all COVERS of ITALIAN ARTISTS: RAF and UMBERTO TOZZI!!
Don't forget power of love. There's a specific live version of ti amo that she did that gives me chills everytime. I love her
YEAH!!!!!! One of my fav female from the 80's - Her BEST is Gloria then "Solitaire", "How am I Suppose to Live Without You" these are so much better than Self Control which does NOT showcase her range!!! She died way to young!!! If she had lived she would have ruled the airwaves!!!! RIP Laura - we miss you!!! BTW - her videos were mostly a German company - the same one who gave us "99 Luffballons" - not exactly what we normally see for the 80's MTV
Look up Italo Disco, as a genre. This was a cover of RAF's song. 80's synth, and style took it's cue, in no small part, from the Italian trend setters.
Laura killed it, for sure.
The video was, super dark.
Gloria was a massive hit for Laura. Gotta hit that one next! Thanks for this one. 👍
One of the most beautiful women in rock and such great vocals. Gone too young at only 52….RIP Laura. ❤️
Give her another shot. Everyone has heard "Gloria," but give a listen to "Shattered Glass," "The Lucky One," or "Solitaire."
You absolutely have to listen to Gloria by her!!! HER VOICE!!!! It’s been one of my favorite songs since childhood! I can’t wait until you guys hear it!!! Keep the reactions coming!
"Gloria" is our favorite Branigan song. She died at the age of 47...gone too soon.
self control, gloria and others are all COVERS of ITALIAN ARTISTS: RAF and UMBERTO TOZZI!!
Nest you should listen to "Gloria", "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You", and "Spanish Eddie".
Laura Branigan had a great voice and great rocker.
She was also in the midst of Pat Benetar, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Irene Cara, Donna Summer just to name a few!!! Loved her music it was so tragic that she died at 52 she was gorgeous!
Gloria - a notorious song from 80s pop. Please react to Gloria by Laura Brannigan
One of my favorite songs!! I know it doesn't showcase her voice, but I still love it. She's amazing.
Gloria is her banger! Once it starts you will know it!
I loved her 🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️
RIP Laura Branigan….she was definitely one of my first crushes as a young man as well as an excellent pop rock goddess….try to react to “Gloria” & her version of “Power of Love”…so beautiful 😍 😍😍😍😍😍
Mine was Pat Benatar. I used to stare at the Crimes of Passion album cover endlessly.
Also my first crush!! Regards from Chile.
Since we're on the subject mine was Patty Smyth from Scandal...need to review some Scandal on this channel.
I'm late to this post, but mine was Lita Ford.
@@LiberalsArePoop yeah she a was dead sexy on that cover ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I was in my thirties during the eighties and I had no idea that she was "underated". As I recall her music received a lot of airplay and video exposure. By the way, this is my favorite Laura song. 🎶😊
Mine too.
Gloria was her biggest hit... but my two favorite songs by her are, Spanish Eddie, and Forever Young.
I worked in a factory in 85ish, when this was new. When this came on, each side of the building would exchange the "oh oh oh" parts lol
So glad you did some Laura Branigan she is one of my all time faves. Her version of Power Of Love blows Celine's out of the water in my opinion. RIP Laura you will be forever missed by me.
I'm with you. I've always preferred her version of Power of Love.
This was a big hit in 1984 for Laura. Also, while on my honeymoon in Spain that same year, the original version sung by Italian male singer "Raf", was also a big hit in Europe. Laura Branigan was born in Brewster, New York and died aged 52, 26 August 2004. RIP Laura.
Laura was such an amazing singer and entertainer. I saw her live in 83, a great show. She had us laughing, crying, cheering. Such a talented and beautiful woman. RIP
“Gloria” is Laura Brannigan’s signature song. The St. Louis Blues adopted “Gloria” as their theme song.
Damn it! Everyone forgets Laura did the best version of the song, THE POWER OF LOVE. CHOOSE ONE OF THE LIVE VERSIONS. She is incredible!
She really shows off her range in that song
Looking through the comments I wish you guys would recommend more of her catalog. I keep seeing the same few ones and she has A LOT of bangers. And hits in my eyes. While not technically not hits on the charts, she has so many good songs I'm not seeing recommended and it's a bummer because I'd love for them to dive deep in the Laura rabbit hole like they've done several other artists. Laura is my all time favorite female artist and she deserves that kinda respect!
I so agree with the person who suggested Laura Braningan. She is so underrated!! This is a great song but if you want to hear peak Laura Braningan check out "The Power of Love". She shows off how much of a powerhouse voice she actually had.
Show Me Heaven and Power of Love show how impressive her voice really was.
My favourite Laura Branigan songs are
Gloria
How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?
Solitaire is easily one of her best ! Her voice range is off the charts
Her video for that song was also fantastic.
The original was by an artist called Raf, and it's a little different. Laura Branigan is great - you should listen to Gloria. It would have been interesting if Donna Summer had covered this song.
I only learned of Raf's original about a year ago after living thinking this was, you know, THE version of it. I love Laura, but I have to say, I find Raf's version quite amazing and prefer it actually.
you DEF need to listen to her singing Gloria...
Love Laura....her version of Power of Love...... still gives me goosebumps. Celine(a great singer) doesn't give me goosebumps when I listen her sing. First heard Solitaire when I left my husband. The song got me thru a tough, emotional time.
Gloria…Laura is a powerhouse.
This song doesn’t show it as well.
This is a great song, but yeah, Gloria is an overall more powerful song.
This is one of my favorite of all of her songs but there are other songs that show her range better. I also really like Shattered Glass and The Lucky One.
@@mortimerbrewster3671 mine as well, the dynamics in this song is unreal
Love that song!
This is her best song. Was her biggest hit. But "Lucky One" is ok too.
I love literally anything by Laura Brannigan; she's one of my favorite artists of all time. She had A LOT of hits, but I agree she should have been a bigger star than she was. My favorites by her are probably "Gloria", & then "The Power of Love". RIP, Laura, we love you. Please do as many of her songs as possible!
My favourite female song from the 80's. This song rock's.
One of my favorites from her. Gloria is another great one from her.
“How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” is probably my favorite song from Laura Branigan. It’s a must listen to. “Gloria” is also a great song that needs to be reacted to.
Anything sung by Laura is perfection. Her voice was so, so underrated. Keep it up guys 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Her best songs: Gloria, Power of Love (her full voice!), Self Control, How Am I Supposed To Live WIthout Out, Lucky Ones, Solitare (again her voice in full blast, NO AUTO TUNE).
Her song "Gloria" is a better showcase for her voice. It's one of my favorite songs of the 80's.
If you want to experience Laura’s range, “Ti Amo” is a great example
Yes, that one’s my favourite! ❤️
Gloria and Self Control were her biggest hits, but she had so many amazing songs. She was so underrated because she had one of those powerhouse, belt it out there, super-ballad voices, but there just was not a big call for belting songs in the 80s and early 90s.
Love this song. Love Laura Branigan.
This is my favorite songs of hers, but I have to admit it doesn't show her fullest range. For that, you need to hear Gloria and/or Solitaire.
If you want to hear power, listen to “Gloria.” One of my fave songs from the 80s. Gets me in a happy mood. I use it for exercising and walking. It also has super high notes. Didn’t realize it until I tried to sing it.
RIP Laura.Brilliant singer and artist
Laura is one of the best, loved all her music. RIP Laura
Solitaire is my favorite song by Laura Branigan....great artist.
Finally someone reacted to this song, thank you!! ❤
As everyone else was saying, "Gloria" was her big hit, reaching as high as #2 on the billboard charts. She also had a hit with "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" back in 1983. A song written by Michael Bolton before he started his singing career and re-recorded it in 1990.
self control, gloria and others are all COVERS of ITALIAN ARTISTS: RAF and UMBERTO TOZZI!!
As a musician, not even talking about the video; just the music and instrumentation, the production quality is such a high caliber, it has me curious who produced this record, who mixed and recorded it and who her record label was. This was an awesome first listen for me.
I mean Gloria and also how am I supposed to live without you. She was gone way too soon such a huge powerful voice
Gloria (!!), The Lucky One, Solitaire has great display of her range. She has plenty other’s that are ballads, but I really loved when you could dance to her …
Please give Laura Branigan another chance - "Gloria" was the spirit anthem in 2019 for the St. Louis Blues hockey team; a personal favorite is "Solitaire" which shows her incredible vocal range.
This is how music can be atemporal ! True classic and banger till nowadays
Ti Amo... Gloria.. The Power of Love. She's an amazing vocalist and a more incredible human being. You know , she walked away from her career to take care of her husband, who was diagnosed with a degenerative disease. Decade later he dies and she grieves. Then she's reviving and announces plans for new musical works. Tragically she passes, suddenly. RIP, Laura. TI AMO XO
You should definitely check out "Gloria" as others have suggested so you can get an idea of what she was capable of. But in my case Self Control is still my favorite even if it was more relaxed vocally. Sadly Laura passed away in her early 50's.
This song is my number one favorite. Laura Brannigan was so beautiful with an awesome voice. Sadly gone way too soon.
There is a recording of a live performance on you tube with a band and she reacts to the audience.
Gloria! Was brilliant!, also, look at Helen Reddy I am Woman! It became the anthem for the women's movement in the early 70s.
RIP Laura!
I'm so happy to see you do a reaction to Laura Branigan -- one of my favorite singers of all time. She had so many great songs and videos, but Gloria was definitely her calling card. Self Control was also one of her biggest hits, but MTV told her she had to re-make the video because it was too "risque". She refused, and they pulled her music from the channel for a while. I think that took some steam out of her career and popularity at the time. Fortunately, she kept on making albums, videos and singing on many soundtracks (Flashdance, Ghostbusters, Salsa, Coming to America, etc) -- and continued to show up on the charts for the remainder of the 80's and early 90's.

A few more good ones for Female Friday: k.d. lang - "Constant Craving."
"All Around the World" - Lisa Stansfield
"Missing" - Everything But The Girl (really they are man-woman duo, but Tracey Thorn does the lead vocals)
K.D. Lang "Constant craving" (original video/audio version) is so awesome. All her songs are amazing. ❤️
Wow, you just listed THREE amazing songs!!! We should be providing the songs, especially on Female Friday. That way, BOTH of them will be surprised. LOL
IMHO Constant Craving is a ‘meh’ song, not sure they will love it enough to explore kd further. Great voice, but so-so song. I’d suggest ‘Crying’ solo or with Roy Orbison, or ‘Hallelujah’ both I think show off her voice better.
I'd love to see a k.d. lang reaction especially. Perhaps Pulling Back the Reins or another song off Absolute Torch and Twang.
@@aliccolo Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray…..
Laura brannigan was one of a kind. She’s gone too soon. I love this song. It was a billboard top five and still hits today. Abstract video
Laura Branigan the best.
Please check the power of love.
So you can hear the power of her vocals.
Very underrated singer.
I loved her! I would ride my bike as fast as I could, singing "Gloria" at the top of my lungs. It's where I learned the word "alias."
Thats funny. My aunt was called Gloria and as much as I loved she was a fierce woman but the song is so uplifting the dichotomy was always hilarious
This is my FAVORITE Laura Brannigan song! I’m so happy you listened to it! She’s such an underrated singer and she passed away way too early. I’d suggest “Gloria” by her as well!
Laura…Gloria…love it!!
Forever In our hearts 💕
Rest in peace Laura!💙
YES!! So much yes for female Friday!! Laura was very underrated for her talent. Tragically a brain aneurysm took her way too soon. You must do “Gloria” next! “Te Amo” and her cover of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” really showcases her voice as well
Actually even this song and Gloria are covers, great covers tho.
