Im glad you gave credit to Laura Branigan and thanks for commenting on the music video. Im 63 years old and back in the 1980s those videos were very important to us .
Laura’s biggest hit was her #1 Gloria. Also check out these other hits: Solitaire, How am I Suppose to Live Without You and her version of Power of Love. Sadly she passed away from an aneurysm.
It's funny how some artists can be so talented and commercially successful, but sort of fall into a pop culture memory hole. She was a star in the early 80s. RIP.
As others would say Laura had an awesome voice with different ranges that you don't get in this song. She has other songs that show the power of her voice. I saw her in concert and she was even better in person. Her voice went right through me. I believe her best songs are "Power Of Love" "Ti Amo" & "How Am I Suppose To Live Without You." Laura died early at the age of 49. She was just in her prime and she was one of the music industries biggest lost...not so much for the artists...but for us fans!
RIP Laura Branigan….she was definitely one of my first crushes as a young man as well as an excellent pop rock goddess….try to react to “Gloria” & her version of “Power of Love”…so beautiful 😍 😍😍😍😍😍
The late great Laura Branigan. This is one of her most understated vocal performances. Check out 'Gloria' as well as her version 'How Am I Supposed to Live Without You', particularly the live version. Michael Bolton wrote it for her and she recorded and released her version before he then went on to release it too. Sadly, Laura died in her sleep of a brain aneurysm in 2004.
Agreed. You want "Gloria" to appreciate her more. Also, you absolutley must hear "Hot Night" by her off the 1984 Ghostbusters soundtrack, absolute banger and one of my favs by Laura. 👍
Worldwide cumulatively Self Control probably outsells Gloria as it was a bigger hit in many European countries, and it was definitely much bigger in Asian countries than Gloria ... Gloria was bigger in the US/UK but thats it ... Self Control has to be bigger, as Europe has more than double the population of the US ...
It is interesting to see how the music video evolved from Gloria to this number. Gloria was just a camera on a set while this is a movie with script and direction. The early MTV world was the band in front of a camera while the 80s evolved into concept videos with budgets in the millions.
Gloria, Solitaire, The Lucky One, Ti Amo, Spanish Eddie, the live version of How am I Supposed to Live Without You when she almost breaks down. So many great songs. Classically trained voice.
Laura Branigan was an amazing singer, had multiple hits and guest starred in a few tv shows and motion pictures. She left us way too early in 2004 at the age of 52.
Laura was such an amazing singer and entertainer. I saw her live in 83, a great show. She had us laughing, crying, cheering. Such a talented and beautiful woman. RIP
"The video was filmed in New Jersey and New York City and directed by William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist). Branigan was one of the first artists of the video era to work with an Academy Award-winning film director. She recalled to The Associated Press: 'It was a real experience. He's a great film director. We worked very hard on it.' "'The song was about losing your self-control to the night or to someone,' Branigan added. 'We had a man representing the night, wearing a mask. There were all these great dancers wearing masks by Willa Shalit. There's a shot where the man comes into my bedroom, taking me into the night. He appears and disappears. MTV didn't play it. They said it was risqué. It was played in Europe and everywhere else. I didn't think it was bad at all.'"
You guys are by far my favorite couple that does reactions! Most couples are competitive. One person drowns the other one out. Not you two. You really compliment each other very well.
This was a big hit in 1984 for Laura. Also, while on my honeymoon in Spain that same year, the original version sung by Italian male singer "Raf", was also a big hit in Europe. Laura Branigan was born in Brewster, New York and died aged 52, 26 August 2004. RIP Laura.
This is one of my favorite of all of her songs but there are other songs that show her range better. I also really like Shattered Glass and The Lucky One.
She is one of the best voices of the 80'. She has four octaves of range, and is absolutely beautiful. R.I.P. Laura. Take a look at Gloria and many more.
I so agree with the person who suggested Laura Braningan. She is so underrated!! This is a great song but if you want to hear peak Laura Braningan check out "The Power of Love". She shows off how much of a powerhouse voice she actually had.
This song is my number one favorite. Laura Brannigan was so beautiful with an awesome voice. Sadly gone way too soon. There is a recording of a live performance on you tube with a band and she reacts to the audience.
So glad you did some Laura Branigan she is one of my all time faves. Her version of Power Of Love blows Celine's out of the water in my opinion. RIP Laura you will be forever missed by me.
This is a cover. The original version was written/sung by a male called "RAF" and was a huge hit in Europe. It was Branigans spiel to cover european hit-songs that were unknown in the US (like Gloria). And you are pretty dead right by pointing out that he music is between disco and techno, because after disco and before techno there was "Italo-Disco" and this song is a premier example of that style of music.
A few more good ones for Female Friday: k.d. lang - "Constant Craving." "All Around the World" - Lisa Stansfield "Missing" - Everything But The Girl (really they are man-woman duo, but Tracey Thorn does the lead vocals)
Wow, you just listed THREE amazing songs!!! We should be providing the songs, especially on Female Friday. That way, BOTH of them will be surprised. LOL
I love literally anything by Laura Brannigan; she's one of my favorite artists of all time. She had A LOT of hits, but I agree she should have been a bigger star than she was. My favorites by her are probably "Gloria", & then "The Power of Love". RIP, Laura, we love you. Please do as many of her songs as possible!
Here in Italy we all know the original Raf hit, my wife who is from south America insisted this was a Laura song but honestly here this version had not much audience, but she was a great artist as I can see now.
If you want to hear power, listen to “Gloria.” One of my fave songs from the 80s. Gets me in a happy mood. I use it for exercising and walking. It also has super high notes. Didn’t realize it until I tried to sing it.
I was in my thirties during the eighties and I had no idea that she was "underated". As I recall her music received a lot of airplay and video exposure. By the way, this is my favorite Laura song. 🎶😊
LOVE LOVE LOVE Laura Branigan, and this song! It's such a sultry, sensual song, and Laura's voice delivers this wonderfully! Though most remember her for belting out "Gloria", this my favorite of hers. "Solitaire" is another banger. Tragically, she passed from a brain aneurysm in 2004 at the age of 52, yet another amazing talent gone too soon. Thanks for reacting!
Laura Ann Branigan (July 3, 1952 - August 26, 2004) was an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Her signature song, the platinum-certified 1982 single "Gloria", stayed on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for 36 weeks, then a record for a female artist, peaking at No. 2. It also reached number one in Australia and Canada. Branigan died in her sleep at her lodge in East Quogue, New York, on August 26, 2004, aged 52. The cause was attributed to a previously undiagnosed ventricular brain aneurysm. It was reported that she had been experiencing persistent headaches for several weeks before her death, but had not sought medical attention for them. RIP Laura Branigan ❤️
Ti Amo... Gloria.. The Power of Love. She's an amazing vocalist and a more incredible human being. You know , she walked away from her career to take care of her husband, who was diagnosed with a degenerative disease. Decade later he dies and she grieves. Then she's reviving and announces plans for new musical works. Tragically she passes, suddenly. RIP, Laura. TI AMO XO
“How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” is probably my favorite song from Laura Branigan. It’s a must listen to. “Gloria” is also a great song that needs to be reacted to.
Laura Branigan was an Italy's cover singer 😁 Gloria is a cover from a 1980 song by Umberto Tozzi, a very famous talian singer in Italy (Ti amo was his too) Self control is another cover from a 1984 song by Raf (Raffaele Riefoli) another italian singer.
This is my FAVORITE Laura Brannigan song! I’m so happy you listened to it! She’s such an underrated singer and she passed away way too early. I’d suggest “Gloria” by her as well!
This was one of those songs that defined the 80s, can't talk of the 80s and not mention Laura Branigan. It was a marvelous era, if not the best, everyone longed to have grown up in the 80s. Glad I grew up in the 80s
Not sure what is meant by "underrated" She was quite big in the 80's with a string of hit songs..this one was my fav but "Gloria" is a banger and "Solitaire" etc. She passed away young.
Gloria and Self Control were her biggest hits, but she had so many amazing songs. She was so underrated because she had one of those powerhouse, belt it out there, super-ballad voices, but there just was not a big call for belting songs in the 80s and early 90s.
As everyone else was saying, "Gloria" was her big hit, reaching as high as #2 on the billboard charts. She also had a hit with "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" back in 1983. A song written by Michael Bolton before he started his singing career and re-recorded it in 1990.
Looking through the comments I wish you guys would recommend more of her catalog. I keep seeing the same few ones and she has A LOT of bangers. And hits in my eyes. While not technically not hits on the charts, she has so many good songs I'm not seeing recommended and it's a bummer because I'd love for them to dive deep in the Laura rabbit hole like they've done several other artists. Laura is my all time favorite female artist and she deserves that kinda respect!
The original was by an artist called Raf, and it's a little different. Laura Branigan is great - you should listen to Gloria. It would have been interesting if Donna Summer had covered this song.
I only learned of Raf's original about a year ago after living thinking this was, you know, THE version of it. I love Laura, but I have to say, I find Raf's version quite amazing and prefer it actually.
Laura Branigan had a string of top ten hits in the 80's and she was very popular at the time! My favorites by her are "Gloria" "Spanish Eddie" "The Lucky One" & "Solitaire"
Love Laura....her version of Power of Love...... still gives me goosebumps. Celine(a great singer) doesn't give me goosebumps when I listen her sing. First heard Solitaire when I left my husband. The song got me thru a tough, emotional time.
Please give Laura Branigan another chance - "Gloria" was the spirit anthem in 2019 for the St. Louis Blues hockey team; a personal favorite is "Solitaire" which shows her incredible vocal range.
Look up Italo Disco, as a genre. This was a cover of RAF's song. 80's synth, and style took it's cue, in no small part, from the Italian trend setters. Laura killed it, for sure. The video was, super dark.
YES!! So much yes for female Friday!! Laura was very underrated for her talent. Tragically a brain aneurysm took her way too soon. You must do “Gloria” next! “Te Amo” and her cover of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” really showcases her voice as well
Laura’s biggest hit was her #1 Gloria. Also check out these other hits: Solitaire, How am I Suppose to Live Without You and her version of Power of Love. Sadly she passed away from an aneurysm.
@@martinsv9183 "Gloria" was certified Platinum and "Self Control" was certified Gold, so "Gloria" was the bigger hit when using sales as the measure of success.
@@DrCecil86Do you only count the US as most US people do? In many European countries Self Control was her biggest hit. It was the most selling single in Germany in 1984. Of course there's more power in her vocals in Gloria, but Self Control is one of the signature songs of the 80s at least in Europe...
Fun Fact: The video for Self Control was directed by William Friedkin who made The Exorcist in 1973🤯
RIP Laura Branagan. Underated and never got the respect and recognition she deserved.
Yes,I had no idea & got goosebumps when I read she died 2004,only 47...:-(

Im glad you gave credit to Laura Branigan and thanks for commenting on the music video. Im 63 years old and back in the 1980s those videos were very important to us .

Agree “Gloria” was a major hit and showed her voice more. Power of Love as well.
Yeah, Gloria and Solitaire show the power in her voice!
Another vote for Gloria
Her biggest hit was "Self Control". Also by far the most played on the radio worldwide.
Every time I hear this song, it takes me back in time to 1984. It's a timeless classic.

Guys absolutely a great reaction to a beautiful and talented artist gone too soon. Your next reaction has to be Gloria!!!
She passed away on August 26, 2004...Gloria was her signature song for sure.
RIP Laura Branigan….she was definitely one of my first crushes as a young man as well as an excellent pop rock goddess….try to react to “Gloria” & her version of “Power of Love”…so beautiful 😍 😍😍😍😍😍
Mine was Pat Benatar. I used to stare at the Crimes of Passion album cover endlessly.
Also my first crush!! Regards from Chile.
Since we're on the subject mine was Patty Smyth from Scandal...need to review some Scandal on this channel.
I'm late to this post, but mine was Lita Ford.
@@LiberalsArePoop yeah she a was dead sexy on that cover ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Laura's voice is fantastic on her song "Gloria." If any of you remember the 70s/80s TV show"CHiPs", there's a clip of her performing on that show.
Yes I remember the 70 and 80 tv shows chip's
She was on 'Automan' too. Didn't see her in 'CHiPs'

"The Power of Love" and "Spanish Eddie" was better than "Gloria"
Even after that it didn't get a good recognition
Gloria's version of raf's self control is good.
both stolen from italian singers
Laura Branigan had an amazing voice and she was beautiful too! I always thought she was so underrated even though she was so talented.
Terrific voice .. w/ 'Gloria' and this tune Laura was the Queen of radio for a few months in the 80s..
#RIP
Gloria, Solitaire, The Lucky One, Ti Amo, Spanish Eddie, the live version of How am I Supposed to Live Without You when she almost breaks down.
So many great songs.
Classically trained voice.
All great songs. Another favorite of mine is shattered glass.
Spanish Eddie! I'd forgotten that one!
Another vote for listening to the song "Solitaire".
self control, gloria and others are all COVERS of ITALIAN ARTISTS: RAF and UMBERTO TOZZI!!
Don't forget power of love. There's a specific live version of ti amo that she did that gives me chills everytime. I love her
J/Amber, this is one of her 3 top 10 hits!! Her "Gloria" is next for you!!
Gloria is a 💯 must!

Thats funny. My aunt was called Gloria and as much as I loved she was a fierce woman but the song is so uplifting the dichotomy was always hilarious
She had a very strong voice, and she was georgous. Her husband had passed and she died alone, so sad.
Check out her song Gloria. I think you will enjoy it.
Laura had a terrific voice, a couple of songs for your listening pleasure are
How am I supposed to live without you and The Power of Love
YES!! So much yes for female Friday!! Laura was very underrated for her talent. Tragically a brain aneurysm took her way too soon. You must do “Gloria” next! “Te Amo” and her cover of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” really showcases her voice as well
Actually even this song and Gloria are covers, great covers tho.
Laura’s biggest hit was her #1 Gloria. Also check out these other hits: Solitaire, How am I Suppose to Live Without You and her version of Power of Love. Sadly she passed away from an aneurysm.
Yes😥😥
No it wasnt. "Self Control" was her biggest hit. Most played on the radio too.
I definitely think How Am I Supposed To Live Without You is a better choice for showing off her range.
