And the dancing in that movie was so great it's been used in commercials, comedies & when she pulls the water down on the chair..well, everyone knows it's from flash dance.
My sister has been a welder for almost 30 years. She assembles Semi Trucks at Wabash National. She is very pretty and is good at her job. Yes she gets flirted with a lot even though she just turned 60 this year. It's rare to see women in certain jobs, but definitely doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
This movie is set in Pittsburgh PA. The main character is a young woman who works in a steel mill during the day and dances in clubs during the night. She ends up auditioning for a fancy dance school/troupe . Also, she abd the mill owner fall in love. The actress is Jennifer Beal ( not sure of the spelling) There were several songs from the soundtrack that became popular
Look up the video for the movie White Nights, with Mikhail Baryshnikov & Gregory Hines. A phenomenal dance sequence was performed to Prove Me Wrong by David Pack
She wasn't a steel worker, she was a welder. The whole movie was about her wanting to be a dancer and study at NY's famous dance academy. The final dance scenes were her at her audition to be accepted in... which, of course, she made it. Watch the movie, son.
Check out Irene Cara - Fame (Official video from the movie "Fame") - She sings AND dances in the video. She can do it, and it's an amazing song. Requiescat In Pace to Irene, who passed in November 2022 at a too young age of 63 :(
The girl grinds at the factory, performs at the strip club, has dreams of making it as a ballet dancer and strives to be accepted to move up to being a real dancer! Jennifer Beals was the actress, Irene Cara is the singer for the soundtrack! You're Mamma was referring to the classic song, "Goodnight, Irene" by the Huddie Lead Belly" Ledbetter from 1933, but made famous in 1950 by the Weavers, which is the version I grew up hearing from my Mom's LP collection from Reader's Digest Greatest Hits.
This song was competing with Billy Jean and Beat it by Michael Jackson on the charts in 1983. This song spent 5 weeks at #1 and won the Oscar for Best original song
I loved this movie. I remember everyone going home and cutting holes in the knee of their jeans. FYI - Her main dance double was the French actress Marine Jahan, the shot of Alex diving through the air in slow motion during the audition sequence was performed by Sharon Shapiro, a professional gymnast. The breakdancing Alex performs in the audition sequence at the film's end was doubled by the male dancer Crazy Legs (RIP).
Irene Cara also sang the theme song of FAME, as well as starred in the movie. RIP Irene😢 Her song OUT HERE ON MY OWN is absolutely beautiful! So talented... I cried when she unexpectedly passed. This song is from the movie Flashdance. Great movie!!! So many memories from my youth. 😢😊
Jennifer Beals was the actress, most of the dance scenes were performed by an uncredited French actress Marine Jahan. Irene was a great singer and actress herself-check out the film and soundtrack "Fame"🕯
Flashdance was a very successful romantic drama from 1983. The movie, set in Pittsburgh, features Jennifer Beals as Alex Owens, a welder by day, dancer by night. Flashdance was one of the first films to use music videos for promotion. So, the music video you watched for the title song "Fashdance.... What a Feeling)" was basically created by editing scenes together from the movie. Indeed, the video features the major dance sequence from the film, which was apparently the primary driver of the leg warmers trend of the '80s! While Irene Cara sings the title song, she does not appear in the movie, even though she was an accomplished dancer who not only sang the title song to the 1980 hit movie "Fame", but also starred in the film as an aspiring dancer. In the movie Falshdance, Jennifer Beals did perform some of her character's dance numbers herself, but other dancers were used for the more complex moves. Marine Jahan was Jennifer Beals' body double for the dancing scenes, but she was kept hidden from the press because the filmmakers did not want to "ruin the illusion." Alex's leap through the air in the audition scene was done by gymnast Sharon Shapiro. For the movie’s final scene, Alex performs a complicated routine featuring a break dancing move called the whip backspin. It was so difficult that neither one of Jennifer Beals’ body doubles could do it, so producers called on the then-16-year-old Richard “Crazy Legs” Colón, who, alongside his break dancing group the Rock Steady Crew, had already made a short appearance in the movie. He donned a wig, shaved his peach-fuzz moustache, squeezed into a leotard (no taping or tucking) and stepped to the beat. As a consequence, Jennifer Beals' leotard suddenly develops a curious bulge, clearly visable in a particularly intimate area.😅 Btw, in addtion to the US #1 hit title song by Irene Cara, the Flashdance movie and soundtrack features another US #1 hit - "Maniac" by Michael Sembello. Well worth checking out also!
I always thought "Gloria" by Laura Branigan was on the soundtrack as well, but apparently only "Imagination" was (thank you Google) even though "Gloria" was in the movie. "Imagination" is a good song, but "Gloria" is in a completely different league.
My friend in high school said, "you have got to see this movie.. I'm in love." The song was actually written for the movie. A song to go with it would be maniac, as she's a maniac on the floor. That was one of the best scenes in the movie for us high school guys. Yes, I have the VHS, the DVD, and the LP. Some people, being very emotional, will cry at the end of the movie.. seeing her achieve her dream.
Still there are videos of Irene singing her songs. One I have seen with just her dancing to either this song or Fame. Show Irene in video should be a reaction also since we do not have much. She let a quiet life basically giving up possible future success, but we do have these classics.
Maybe THE most iconic song of the 80s. It was BIG. Probably because of the video/the dance from the movie...so many things have spoofed or parodied this scene.
The chair scene with the water splash is iconic. It's still referenced in various media, like on an episode of The Office. This movie set the styles for a while. A lot of women my age still cut the neck out of a t-shirt or sweatshirt. No, that's not Irene Cara. The actress is Jennifer Beals, there's a double doing the dancing, but I've forgotten her name.
This is from the movie Flash Dance, the story is she was a welder by day and dancer by night workiing her way to be a professional dancer, nothing to do with trash men. Maybe check out flash dance the movie and see for yourself. The actress is called Jennifer Beals who plays the main role. The movie is from 1983 it has an awesome soundtrack too which i have and the movie on dvd. The main dancing was done by Marine Jahan not the actress Jennifer Beals, but the break dancing sequence was done by a male dancer known as Crazy Legs, but Irene Cara just sang the song.
The character's name is Alex Owens, an aspiring ballerina who is a welder by day and exotic dancer by night. Her goal is to be accepted in the prestigious Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance and Repertory. The actress was Jennifer Beals, the singer was Irene Cara, and the dancer(s) were body doubles, the main one being uncredited French actress Marine Jahan.
The blond, dancer, Cynthia Rhodes, is also a singer, she is or was married to Richard marx, and she and her band( Animotion), released an 😍 amazing album! Her videos to the songs/ singles : calling it 💕 love, and " room to move", should be available on youtube.
You should always see the movie before you hear this song. You'll never appreciate it on the level we do. Some of us were there. We saw it in theaters.
The first time I drove down Sunset Blvd in Hollywood int early 80's, I remember seeing all of the giant movie posters and the biggest one was for the movie Flashdance and it was just Jennifer Beals who I instantly thought was one of the most beautiful women I ever had seen. I didn't know who she was because the movie had not come out yet. But soon the movie and this song would both get to no. 1.
"What A Feeling" was the theme song for the 1980s movie Flashdance. about a girl who works as a steelworker during the day but has a passion to be a professional dancer. This video was all scenes from then movie. Irene Cara sang the theme song for another famous movie "Fame" (im gonna live forever)
No that is not the singer or the actor that was a stunt dancer. The actress did do some dancing but it was a real dancer that did yhe dancing. It's from the music Flashdance.
Jennifer Beale who played the young steel worker was 18 when she made this film and then quit Hollywood to go to Yale and study American literature. She later became known for embracing her bi-racial heritage and starred in TV's "The L Word."
Irene Cara was an amazing singer and songwriter, RIP. Fame songs, “Fame,” “Out Here on My Own,” video must-watches. The movie “Fame” was moving, and she even co-starred. This movie, “Flashdance,” was another 80’s movie, and starred Jennifer Beals, female welder, trying to make her ballet dreams come true.
I was 14 when this movie came out me and my friends saw it 10 times in theaters. This song was huge I love her song Fame from the movie she was in also.
I was a maintenance mechanic for 10 years while I attended school at night. I know many female electricians, welders, carpenters and one plumber. You’ve got to get a little more exposure to progressive locations. 😂
A lot of country girls do all kinds of "male" skills simply because those things need to get done to live that lifestyle. Interesting how, when I was growing up, my dad would get after me about notions he had where I wasn't behaving "lady-like" enough until he needed things done on the farm. Same kind of nonsense I heard when I joined the army. Don't know about you, but I'm not gender confused and happy to be female. Just never aspired to be a "lady."😄
Nice reaction. As a former player you are at your best reacting to hot shorties.......... you remember. Looking for that kind of reaction from a Beth Hart Reaction to "Am I The One" live at the Praradiso. You will smile, say Bro 10 times and want to show all your friends.
Irene Cara actress / singer did play a role in the movie Fame, which she also sang the title track to. Both Fame and What a Feeling were huge hits and total bangers. They were both motivational feel-good songs that you couldn't help but Jam to wherever you were
Irene Cara also played the part of Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame. She also sang the song Fame it was her debut single. What a feeling always seems to makes it into the top 100 pop songs or many of the music channels and radio stations.
She's a welder. a HUGE part of my formative years. All the girls we're dressing like her (she 'Alex' lead role) had every teenager girl waring off-the-shoulder sweatshirts. Truly a classic movie if there ever was one.
Yay! Finally! This is the theme song to the iconic movie, "Flashdance." Totally improbable plot...that's what makes it so great! 👍She's a welder by day...She's a "sort of" exotic dancer by night (pretty PG-13-rated stuff)...She want's to be accepted into a prestigious dancing academy. She accomplishes her goal by doing it her way. Irene is not in the movie - she's just the singer. Jennifer Beals is the actress, Marine Jahan (and evidently others) are the "secret" performers that do the actual dancing.
Hi Black Pegasus. Referring to the saying ' Goodnight Irene ' which your mom use to say to you apparently, it was a song originally written by Huddie ' Leadbelly ' Ledbetter in 1933. It has been covered by lots of people over the years . A band called the Weavers had a hit with it in 1950 and it was no1 for 13 weeks.
Thank You!!! I always hear Never-ending Story at the beginning of that song, but none of my friends did lol. I am First Nations (Canada) and the female chief of our band is a trained and wonderfully skilled welder.
BP, here's a tidbit about me. I'm a woman, I started driving 18 wheelers when I was 21, in 1979. 🤔 I dont think you were thought of yet 😎 I'm 66 now. I retired after 30 yrs with over 1 million "logged" miles accident free. Thank you Jesus ! I'm from the generation your seeing in this vid. I spent 20 of those years as an Owner Operater. Me and my big Kenworth ran many miles listening to music, LOUD ! My generation of women helped break the glass ceilings, personally I drove my truck thru them 😄. Now, I sit on the porch with some sweet tea, and watch your reactions to all the music I love. Thank you, D
Jennifer Beale's is the actress but not the Dancer.. BTW, the Movie is Flashdance. The dancer is French girl who only got $4,000 for her part. There were 2 other dancers in the show.. Get the movie out... it's a classic your wife and girls will love it. The French girls name was uncredited French pro dancer Marine Jahan,.... saw her once on Australia's Midday Show channel 9
In that famous dancing scene they actually used 3-4 different people. One was a guy who did the break dancing part. Look it up. Still a fantastic movie.
A good female friend of mine is one of the best welders in the USA being one of the most accredited in her field. It is now not unusual to see women at the top of their game in what was previously male dominated professions.
Our beautiful latina Irene Cara. actress. singer and a songwriter, had been around since the early 70s when i was a little girl watching "The Electric Company" children's tv educational show. First time i saw her in a movie was in "Aaron Love Angela"(1975) then later in "Fame"(1980) where her performance and singing started the 80s era with a bang including the title song to "Fame". Standout song for me was her singing "(Out Here)On My Own" in the movie, very highly recommended. We lost Irene a couple of years ago at age 63. 🔥RIP Queen
It Was Sampled in Tons of Movies Flash dance, Dirty Dancing & Saturday Night Fever Were Dance Soundtracks of My Late Teens & 20s. High School Dances Were Huge Fun Back Then!!
Irene Cara was such a great artist. From stardom in the very influential film Fame to the emotional Out Here On My Own she was truly wonderful. All the energy and time spent fighting the corruption in the corporate music industry took a terrible toll on her. Another artist that was treated so badly by the greedy men in suits. She passed way too soon but will never be forgotten ❤
Incredible movie! Classic/Iconic 80’s movie and soundtrack. Kenny Loggins was the king of movie soundtracks. Irene Cara was the Queen. This song, Fame, Break Dance and others.
As a Generation X'er born in 1973, I grew up on this and it was a great time to be alive. You really should see the movie Flashdance. Every scene in this video is from the movie. Cheers from northeast Ohio.
There’s a great British movie called “The Full Monty,” where some working-class, middle-aged guys are trying to learn how to dance, so they watch “Flashdance.” During an early scene of the girl at work, one guy says, “I hope she’s a good dancer because she knows f*** all about welding.”
This is one of two huge movie soundtrack songs for Irene Cara! This song was for the 1983 smash hit movie, "Flashdance" starring Jennifer Beale (she had a dance double) and she had a huge hit with the song "Fame" from the hit movie of the same name released in 1980! The movie "Fame" starred Debbie Allen, who also starred in a television show (with the same name) based on the movie. Irene was also in the movie "Fame" and she was also in the original movie "Sparkle" released in 1976. RIP Irene Cara! 💜💜
OMG. memories of my youth and at dance school and I had a solo to this track. My dad has it on VHS tape lol. Thanks for the memories. I can still do the routine in my head but my CNS condition says no 😢. Anyway still happy times ❤❤❤
Great Reaction....... If No One Else has mentioned it........The event where people show up and spontainously Dance/Perform is usually called a "Flash-Mob".......
The movie is Flashdance
The dancer is Marine Jahan
The actress is Jennifer Beals
Irene Cara is the singer

Thanks on all of our behalves.
And the dancing in that movie was so great it's been used in commercials, comedies & when she pulls the water down on the chair..well, everyone knows it's from flash dance.

In case no one's mentioned it yet, the Jennifer/Marine breakdancer was another double - Richard "Crazy Legs" Colón

Totally improbable plot...that's what makes it so great!
Such a good movie
Hi Black Pegasus. Referring to the saying ' Goodnight Irene ' which your mom use to say to you apparently, it was a song originally written by Huddie ' Leadbelly ' Ledbetter in 1933. It has been covered by lots of people over the years .
A band called the Weavers had a hit with it in 1950 and it was no1 for 13 weeks.
I thought it was a song, but wasn't sure I had the name right. Thanks.😊
Michael Sembello-Maniac
Thank You!!! I always hear Never-ending Story at the beginning of that song, but none of my friends did lol. I am First Nations (Canada) and the female chief of our band is a trained and wonderfully skilled welder.
RIP IRENE KARA, one of my favourite movies in the 80’s still special to watch
The leg warmers! I still have a pair in an old gym bag somewhere in my garage LOL
And the off the shoulder shirts too! LOL
Música ficou na história lenda somente meia palavra ❤❤❤❤❤❤irene cara 🔝🔝🔝
One the best soundtracks from the 80's for sure I have it🎼
Jennifer Beale's is the actress but not the Dancer..
If you want to see Irene Cara in a movie, she was in the movie Fame
This movie and song was huge when it came out. My kids today love watching this movie.
"Maniac" by Michael Sembello is another hit tune from Flashdance.
In that famous dancing scene they actually used 3-4 different people. One was a guy who did the break dancing part. Look it up. Still a fantastic movie.
You’re the only reactor who talks about how ridiculously beautiful she is
A good female friend of mine is one of the best welders in the USA being one of the most accredited in her field. It is now not unusual to see women at the top of their game in what was previously male dominated professions.
That's fantastic. Amazing the positive changes in all work places.
This was her dance audition in the movie Flashdance
'Welder by Day, Dancer by Night'
Irene Cara was such a great artist. From stardom in the very influential film Fame to the emotional Out Here On My Own she was truly wonderful. All the energy and time spent fighting the corruption in the corporate music industry took a terrible toll on her. Another artist that was treated so badly by the greedy men in suits. She passed way too soon but will never be forgotten ❤
Incredible movie! Classic/Iconic 80’s movie and soundtrack. Kenny Loggins was the king of movie soundtracks. Irene Cara was the Queen. This song, Fame, Break Dance and others.
Besides loving to dance to Roundabout, I loved dancing to this. It was the best of times
✨️🎶✨️
Maniac is good too
our good friend and dentist watched our boys so my wife and i went to see this. we both loved dancing and stayed to watch it twice.
Outstanding movie....I highly recommend watching it!!🎵🎼🎶🎥🎞🎬
As a Generation X'er born in 1973, I grew up on this and it was a great time to be alive. You really should see the movie Flashdance. Every scene in this video is from the movie. Cheers from northeast Ohio.
This song inspired me in 1983 to enroll in a jazz dance class.
With the body suit, leg warmers and all!
Flash dance is worth a watch. Good movie.
the water splash scene is soooooooo iconic
You MUST do the official video to Fame next to get a good view of Irene. It's GOLD :)
OMG. memories of my youth and at dance school and I had a solo to this track.
