Describing Bette Davis as iconic would be an understatement. She was one of the greatest actresses of Hollywood’ s golden age. She never cared how difficult a role was or how bad she had to look to do it justice. And although she did not like her own looks, she was very beautiful .

After this song became a hit single, Bette Davis wrote letters to Kim Carnes and the songwriters to say she was a fan of the song (covered by Carnes in 1981) and thank them for making her "a part of modern history." One of the reasons the legendary actress loved the song is that her granddaughter thought her grandmother was "cool" for having a hit song written about her. ☺

Bette Davis was an iconic actress from the golden era of movies. One of her most iconic lines was "Fasten your seatbelts; it's going to be a bumpy night." It was in "All About Eve" (1950), which was also Marilyn Monroe's first film. Bette started her career in the 1930s and was one of the leading actresses during that time who managed to still get some leading roles past 35 years old. "All About Eve" was one of them. She was willing to have a look that was less than flattering and let her awesome acting abilities shine. A couple of her later movies are highly recommended, "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" and "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte." Not a Bette Davis film, but "Sunset Boulevard" with Gloria Swanson is an iconic movie. She literally was a silent film star and she played a forgotten silent film star who still thought people knew who she was. You just have to watch it. It's an iconic movie.

Bette Davis is my FAVORITE actress from the GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD and up unto the '70s. She made 100 a movies in her lifetime, starting in 1931 and her last in 1989. She was born in 1908 and died in 1989. I LOVE every role she played, she was a TREMEMDOUS actress, I LOVE all the movies I have seen her in, in my 77 years of life. You need to do more research on her, and you can bring up a list of ALL the movies she made in chronological order. Also you can find photos of her at every stage of her life, on line. Kim Karnes also mentions TWO other FAMOUS ACTRESSES from BETTE DAVIS' TIME. "HER hair is HARLOW gold" refers to the actress JEAN HARLOW who was a blonde, and then Kim sings "she's got GRETA GARBO standoff sights" refers to the actress GRETA GARBO. You should explore ALL 3 of these VERY VERY FAMOUS ACTRESSES from the "GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD." Check out some of their movies!! I LOVE movies from that period SO MUCH. "Bette Davis Eyes" was originally recorded in a 1920s jazz style by Jackie DeShannon on her 1975 album "New Arrangement." DeShannon wrote the song with the songwriter Donna Weiss. According to DeShannon, she got the idea after watching the 1942 Bette Davis movie "Now Voyager." It was Donna Weiss who submitted the demo to Carnes, who along with her band and producer Val Garay, came up with the hit arrangement for the song.

This song was a massive hit in the 80s. The phrase "Bette Davis eyes" was used a lot for a while to describe any woman with a tough, hypnotic sort of look. Totally agree with Carnes' sound being similar to Bonnie Tyler's; there was also Bonnie Raitt and of course Stevie Nicks, whose voices were also rough-edged but maybe just a touch less so than Carnes' and Tyler's.

That was a pic of Bette Davis. She was a legendary actress for many decades (30's-80's) during Hollywood's Golden Age, and she had large, very expressive eyes. She was up in age when I was young and was nearing the end of her career, but she was still one of those people who just commanded attention. In her heyday she was a massive star. I'm a big fan of horror movies and she did a lot of them. I saw her in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, Burnt Offerings, and Watcher in the Woods, but she won so many awards for her acting that it's ridiculous. Look up her filmography. It just goes on and on. This song became a hit when Bette Davis was well into her 70's and she wrote a letter to Kim Carnes thanking her for making her a "part of modern times". There was an infamously famous long-time feud between her and Joan Crawford (another mega-star of the era), because Bette claimed that Crawford deliberately and maliciously stole the lover of her life away from her. It was no secret that they absolutely hated each other and fans of both of them ate it up. They made a mini-series about the feud several years ago called Bette and Joan.

Bette Davis was a famous actress. She had big beautiful blue eyes. She smoked but used a long cigarette holder and she was always using her hands to dismiss people or to slap someone. She portrayed a strong take charge woman. If you look at the beginning of the song when they pan to the wall there’s a shadow on it in the shape and mannerisms of Bette Davis smoking her cigarette in its long cigarette holder.
Greta Garbo is also mentioned in this song and she was also a beauty from way back in the 40’s.

Snows you ... As I recall, that's sort of when someone pretends (SUCCESSFULLY) to be something they're not; or spinning out a yarn that isn't true, and which allows them to take advantage of you in some way. In the movie "the sting" (for example) you could say the conmen snowed the one's they pulled the con on. "Pulling the wool over your eyes" is sort of the same thing. The other song lyrics include talking about her deceiving. That's pretty close to a synonym too, but I believe when you've been snowed, the person that snowed you got away with their deception. You may have realized what they were about after it was too late to protect yourself. But then it's too late. You've already been snowed.
That's my take on it, anyway.
So, basically, I think the song is saying that she pulls a con on you, and you're so taken with her that you don't even realize it or (if you do) you don't care, because you just want more, even though she's played you.

Bette Davis was arguably the most imposing actress of Hollywood's Golden Age (then slummed it on the "Hotel" series in the 80s). One glance from Bette Davis held 1,000 different emotions. But: Bette Davis (the actress) DID have COMMAND on the screen with THOSE EYES!!! ...and, she never held back who she was, in real life. :) Bette Davis (the singer - the younger woman you viewed) was Miles Davis' wife, and you SHOULD listen to her music - she was a lil' bit of a shocker. My favorite of her's that I've heard is: They Say I'm Different....very creative lady!! Kim Carnes did SUCH a great job with this song! Was a BANGER, back in the day!! THANKS, BP, for reacting to this one!!
