The most amazing part of his partnership with Bernie Taupin was Bernie would write a song and Elton John would write the music. It is truly amazing the way they worked together!
Bernie Taupin is the poetic genius. Elton is piano showman genius. And to the other comments below - Taupin writes the lyrics first, then Elton writes the music.
This song was written in 30 minutes. Bernie gave Elton some lyrics at breakfast at Elton's mother's house - and Elton got up - went to the piano - and half an hour later they hd their first big hit that went #1.
I've never understood this obsession with creative speed. Is creativity a speed contest? The faster, the better? Is this song fundamentally better as a 30-minute composition than if it had taken 30 hours? Is a speedy artist to be respected more than an artist who grinds it out? John Denver wrote Annie's Song in 10.5 minutes on a ski lift, all by himself. If speed is how we value creativity, then Annie's Song is magnitudes better than Your Song, and/or John Denver is magnitudes better than Elton John and Bernie Taupin combined. OR. Maybe speed is irrelevant to the value of the work, nor does any particular anecdote about how much/little time one work took give us a comprehensive assessment of the artist. So why do these "created in 84 seconds!!!!! while hammering nails!!!!! in a hailstorm!!!!! while the baby was screaming!!!!!" items get repeated endlessly as THE most noteworthy thing about a work? My personal observation about artists is that I'm not aware of a single one who was purely a speeder or a grinder. Each work tends to have its own pace. So every artist with a fair number of works under their belt has almost certainly been through both hills and valleys -- creations that came almost instantly, as if from on high; while others had to be sweated for, wrestled with, for days, weeks, months or even years. It's the artists who have struggled greatly and expended insane amounts of effort over certain works, who are able to most appreciate the creations that appear swiftly, fully formed, in their heads. Maybe that's why these "created in 84 seconds" stories exist? Because perhaps a speedy work is a rarity and a gift. A lightning strike of the muse.
@@jannasomewhere2889 No, Bernie says Elton doesn't have the patience to take more than about twenty minutes to compose. Of course a lot of the music is added in the studio by the musicians themselves, but he generally writes the tunes in just a few minutes. On the program "Inside the Actors Studio" Elton was given poems and he showed how he could come up with a melody for just about anything in just a few minutes. Someone even game him an instruction manual to a refrigerator and he came up with a tune with the instructions in it and sang it to the audience.
My beautiful wife of 20 yrs was born in Alcapulco and we met during our freshman year of college. She was on the soccer team and I played baseball. We hit it off from the first time we met and began dating. After a month of dating, I played this song for her, she had never heard of Elton John, and I said this is how I feel about you. After the first verse, she was in tears but listened the whole way through. When it ended, she looked at me, tears flowing and said I Love You with all my heart. That line, "how wonderful life is while you're in the world" gets more and more precious as time goes by. It brings to mind those who are no longer with us and those who are.
Sir Elton John worked with lyricist Sir Timothy Rice on the Lion King soundtrack. Tim Rice is more well known for his Broadway collaborations with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber (The Lord Lloyd-Webber). I'm telling you....music royalty squared!!!
This song was written by Bernie Taupin, who is Elton's primary musical partner. The two have been writing songs for decades now. Bernie writes the lyrics, Elton puts the music to it. This song was written in the late 60's when Taupin was just 17. No one is sure if he wrote it for someone or not. Bernie won't say. Bernie has said that the love is viewed from a point of innocence & naivety. Classic song!
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to almost all of Elton's songs. So many to listen to; you have so much joy to come! Not sure if you have done Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, or Tiny Dancer. All beautiful songs from a golden era that gives me such a warm feeling to remember.
He didn't have any money when he recorded this. This was his last chance. He has said that if his trip to America was not successful, he could always get a job working in a record store. He had been recording for almost three years with no hits, and this album was not doing all that well in the UK after the record company spending plenty of money promoting it. Some people at his record company thought they would give him one last shot. They flew him and his band to Los Angeles, booked him at the most popular club in LA (The Troubadour Club) and invited a couple dozen of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood to see his show. They thought they were going to see a serious singer-songwriter and a ballad singer. He kicked over the piano stool and did all out Rock and Roll and Rock a Billy in addition to the ballads. He blew the doors off the place. He got a record deal in the U.S. and toured with big name artists. Five years later he was the biggest selling artist on earth. He has had about FIFTY hit songs including about ten Number Ones, and is in the 200 million record club with Eminem and Madonna and The Eagles. This was his breakout hit.
Terrific synopsis of this musical genius who fortunately teamed with Bernie Taupin to become the legend he continues to be! I was soooo fortunate to see him in concert 3 times...70s, 80s, and his last tour just recently.
Elton John was huge once Your Song hit the charts. After that he was constantly on the charts - at least that is how I remember it. He was my favouite singer and I had every album, including the soundtrack to Friends (not the tv show) one of the earliest movies he and Bernie Taupin wrote for.
It's funny how music has such an impact in your life. Songs like this make me cry 😢. Taking me back to times in my life of innocence, love, friends and family that are no longer with us! I had a magical childhood and Elton was a big part of that. Make sure your daughter grows up listening to these beautiful, heartfelt, Melody's /songs. They have found that, Vibration and tones set the stage for your spirit. I know your a rapper but alot of rap can put hatred and anger in kids of today. Lyrics are important. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to all of EJs songs. EJ composed all the music. Basically, Bernie would write down the prose and EJ would take it to the piano and then there was pure magic. The two of them were one of the best teams in modern music history.
The Elton John/Bernie Taupin duo were unbeatable. Elton wrote the music and Bernie wrote the lyrics. You need to listen to more Elton John. The music is beautiful and the lyrics are unique. He was hugely popular in the '70's.
Check out this video with Elton Mohn, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder together singing Dionne's song, "Thats What Friends Are For". Its really good. " A Candle In The Wind" is another ballad type song of his. Them there are: "Bennie and The Jets". " Crocodile Run" and so many more. A big ran it hole for certain.
No, he was responsible for about 2 songs in the Lion King.. Also, Bernie Taupin is the lyricist of Elton Johns catalogue. They have worked together for decades. Elton has a unique talent to come up with compositions exceptionally quickly. There are songs where Taupin sent him lyrics first, and songs where he sent music or melodies to Taupin. Aida, is a musical based on the opera by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Music by Elton, lyrics by Tim Rice.
This and his Lady Diana version of "Candle In The Wind" are two of the most heart-wrenching songs aver written. If they don't bring a tear to your eye, you don't have a soul.
Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics and then hands them to Elton to write music to them and then, of course, Elton performs them. It's been a 50+ year partnership. For the Lion King, Tim Rice was brought on by Disney to write the lyrics and Elton again wrote songs for the movie. The SCORE and at least one of the songs, "Be Prepared", was written by Hans Zimmer.
Your Song was one of the biggest hits during my senior year in high school. Elton could do no wrong back then. Every song he put out topped the charts.
Do you remember if he said “boy” I’d buy a big house where we both could live for radio release ? Because at the time we didn’t yet know he was gay and I think they censored that for radio play.
One of my alltime favs.... but find ***CANDLE IN THE WIND*** Must find that...written for Marilyn Monroe and played for Lady Diana when she died in the car crash in the tunnel with paparrazi car chase.
I saw Elton John in Madison Square Garden in 1976. He played a 20 minute rendition of Saturday Night; the place was screaming. Then the lights went out, we sat for minutes, waiting. He reappeared alone, at the piano. He sang Your Song and it was the perfect ending to an amazing show.
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics, but the music is all Elton. The two are definitely one of the greatest composing teams of all time. Elton definitely sung the words like they were his, and maybe Bernie wrote some of the lyrics from the perspective of Elton's life. Whatever happened, the result was emotional power over and over.
Elton John writes the music and Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics .They have been writing partners for over 50 years . They have never been in the same room when they write Bernie sends the words and Elton writes the music. Your Song was Elton's first major hit in 1970.

This was Eltons first song. Bernie wrote the lyrics and Elton wrote the music in minutes. Both were incredible in the space as a lyricist and musician. Watch the movie Rocketman...must see!!
He's got one of the largest hit catalog in music history more than most artist. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics. With a few exceptions when Elton helped.
"Top of the Pops" is a British television show featuring music. It's been on the air since 1964.
He was great friends with Princess Diana & wrote a beautiful tribute song to her after her death. Candle 🕯️ in the wind. 🥲🙏💔❤️✌️🤙
His original version was about Marilyn Monroe. Much later, he changed the lyrics to be about Diana.
Way too many great tunes to list, Elton who wrote all the music, and Bernie who wrote all the lyrics were gold. BP, yes the song you love is called Crocodile Rock off the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. Here are some incredible songs you hopefully will take a listen to, LEVON, TINY DANCER, INDIAN SUNSET, MAD MAN ACROSS THE WATER, SOMEONE SAVED MY LIFE TONIGHT, that should get you off to a good start. Thanks for the memories BP.👍❤️
Elton John and Billy Joel are amazing storytellers musically!
Please do Elton John and George Michael, Don’t let the sun go down on me 😊
It's funny how music has such an impact in your life. Especially the ones degrading woman, sex, or foul language. I'm old now, and love watching your reactions. Your a beautiful spirit and that's why this older music touches your soul. ❤❤❤
He changed the lyrics to Good;ye Norma Jean to Goodbye Englands Rose which he sang at the funeral of Princess Diana, definitely worth checking out
He is amazing. I was so excited to see you checking this song out.
I am sooooooo excited. I grew up listening to a lot of Elton John . My older sisters played his music a lot. I got to see him in concert and he was amazing!!!!!❤❤❤please go down this rabbit hole!!!

My sister was in palliative care for 3 weeks before she passed in 2021. She made me play this song on my phone on repeat and said this song was for her son.
Always brings tears to my eyes no matter how many times I hear it.
He and Bernie Taupin be one of the best songwriting collaborators in history. So no, you’re not wrong. He did write this song, but he wrote the music to this song and Bernie Taupin wrote all the lyrics. This is to every one of his songs.
First time i heard Elton John was during a Sonny & Cher Show! Blew my mind! ❤❤
He won academy award for the Lion King. This song is on his first album.
Yes! Composed is the word!❤
Rocket man, Bennie and the jets, Harmony , yellow brick road ...Awesome songs 🎵 🎶 🎵
He is sir Elton John a national treasure and royal confidant 🇬🇧 he sang at his great friend’s funeral, Princess Diana and did a duo with Eminem. He then called him daily when Eminem was coming off drugs as he has been there! He is a great father and now hung up his career to focus on his marriage and children ❤
Yep , Elton is his sponsor. Em just celebrated 16 years today ❤
Sir Elton John is a GOAT. His music is 🔥
I love lyrics too. I write poetry and lyrics. ❤
This song was a dedication to his fans, his audience, but it could be to or from anyone anytime...
Fun Fact: Bernie Taupin wrote all the lyrics to all Elton John songs over all these decades. Elton John basically is a duo :D
Elton John - Benny and the Jets - Goodbye Yellow Brick Rode - Rocket Man - Island Girl - Candle in the Wind - Some one Saved my Life Tonight - Nikita - Philadelphia Freedom -
Top of the pops was a show in London that featured artist literally at the top of the pop chart
He was knighted by the Queen of England played in her Jubilee Sir Elton
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to all of EJs songs. EJ composed all the music. Basically, Bernie would write down the prose and EJ would take it to the piano and then there was pure magic. The two of them were one of the best teams in modern music history.
The Elton John/Bernie Taupin duo were unbeatable. Elton wrote the music and Bernie wrote the lyrics. You need to listen to more Elton John. The music is beautiful and the lyrics are unique. He was hugely popular in the '70's.
I was already from the beginning, in love with this song. I was about 14 years old then. How time flies.
Bernie Taupin is the lyricist who writes the words and Elton puts music to them. They've worked together and been best friends for over 50 years.
Bernie Taupin, Elton's songwriting partner, actually wrote almost 100% of Elton's lyrics (including this song), while Elton composed the music
Top of the pops was a British tv show that showcased the top charting music and new music of the time.
Thank you! I was 13 when this song came out and it was my favorite. My brother really liked " DANIEL".
This and his Lady Diana version of "Candle In The Wind" are two of the most heart-wrenching songs aver written. If they don't bring a tear to your eye, you don't have a soul.
Elton John/Bernie Taupin are the second most successful writing duo in music history, second only to Lennon/McCartney😮😊
Now that you have seen the live version of Your Song, you must hear the studio version, which is even more charming than the live version😮😊
Cool fact. Bernie Taupin has given him lyrics for a whole album, and Elton wrote the music to it all in an hour. He's a musical genius.

My favorite song of Sir Elton John is
🎶🎵Funeral for a friend/Love lies bleeding🎵🎶
>> Original sound track
Your Song was one of the biggest hits during my senior year in high school. Elton could do no wrong back then. Every song he put out topped the charts.
Do you remember if he said “boy” I’d buy a big house where we both could live for radio release ? Because at the time we didn’t yet know he was gay and I think they censored that for radio play.
Glad you like the lyrics - written by Bernie Taupin. Dude, you need to acknowledge who did what in the Taupin/John partnership
Another great concert experience. Also loved seeing him with Billy Joel years ago. Bringing back some great, great memories...
In 1974 my friend played this for their wedding song...yes, it was a very popular song.
Me too... sang at my 1984 wedding age 20 still married ❤
One of my alltime favs.... but find ***CANDLE IN THE WIND*** Must find that...written for Marilyn Monroe and played for Lady Diana when she died in the car crash in the tunnel with paparrazi car chase.
He altered the lyrics to pay tribute to his good friend, Lady Diana. Beautiful song.
It was also used in the movie moulin rouge
One of the best concerts I’ve ever been to! ❤❤❤
Candle in the Wind/Goodbye England's Rose, and Someone Saved My Life Tonight are among his best songs ever.
Along with hundreds of others.
Elton's partner does the lyrics, then he writes the music. The songs start as poems.
Bernie Taupin deserves much of the credit that Elton has had. The two, were one of the best song-writing and visual artists in all of rock.
There are very few perfect love songs. This is one of those.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Elton John writes and sings such beautiful music. DEEP rabbit hole. 😊
My husband of almost 37 years dedicated this song to me on our wedding night ❤️❤️
Elton John writes the music and Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics .They have been writing partners for over 50 years . They have never been in the same room when they write Bernie sends the words and Elton writes the music. Your Song was Elton's first major hit in 1970.
One of my favorite Elton John songs!!
This one is one of his best, absolutely beautiful and timeless
You are correct! That is why I could sing it to my daughter
Great pick Peg. Some EJ to soak up...Benny and the Jets, Saturday Night, Tiny Dancer and Levon....all bangers ☘️🇺🇲
This was one of the early hits, the years in which we first began to understand who Elton John was and would be in the songwriter/singer world.
mate Black Pegasus I know Elton Johns Music since late 70s incl. " Your Song " BUT I never heard his Live 1971 ...???? Amazing this Song Sounds Better Live than on Record ??????? Thank you for Digging it out .....🙏🙏🙏🙏
Elton has tons of hits, or should I say sir Elton John
I was 16 when this came out. Talk about romantic. Early Elton is the best. try Where to Now St. Peter, Funeral For a friend/Love Lies Bleeding.
Yes. One of Eltons best
The musicians of my youth in the 70’s and 80’s knew how to write beautiful lyrics along with the amazing scores. Bernie and Elton are a magical team of music writing and how blessed we are to have experienced it in real time. This song hurt after a breakup but it also had you slow dancing with your love too. I never get tired of hearing Elton John. I love the piano and Elton had me hooked.
