Yeah, I hate it when the kids think that Elton was responsible for all the music. Yes, he was a great performer, a good piano player and music writer, but I always loved the lyrics - done by Taupin - the most.
Elton's lyricist partner in song-writing, wrote these lyrics when he (Bernie Taupin) was just 17 years old. Elton has said in interviews that as he's aged he's increasingly amazed at how beautiful of love song such a young & inexperienced person could ever write. Magic! The whole song came together, lyrics & music, very quickly.
Most people like and respect EJ, regardless of their religion or political affiliation. He has always respected everyone back. Rush Limbaugh(famous conservative) invited EJ to sing at his wedding and EJ accepted. Things havn't always been how they are today.
"Your Song" was his first major hit (#8 in the USA). He was part of the whole singer/songwriter trend of those years. Like Carole King, John wrote the music and someone else, Bernie Taupin, wrote the lyrics. That platonic partnership lasted for decades with much success. Elton was still publicly closeted at the time. He was 23 or so (and had his own hair). Judging by his early songs and shy delivery no one guessed that he'd become such an exceptionally flamboyant stage performer within just a few years.
About 25 yrs ago me, my mom and my wife went to see Elton. Right before show was to start, he came on stage, and he said he had good news and bad news. He said, "The bad news is that my band and their instruments had a problem and never made it" Then he said, "But the good news is you have me and my piano for the next 3 hours".
My niece and I saw him right before his farewell tour, and the concert was more than 3 hours then too...the band took a break mid-way, but Elton did not. It was great...and I'm glad I could pass that down to my niece, who was 14 at the time.
Miss. Britt I would just like to say, you are a beautiful human being with a gentle sprit and a truly loving soul. your reactions always make myself and my dad's day brighter and our sprits a little lighter, and just make us both feel better.
One of true greats! Bernie wrote the lyrics and Elton the music! They have been writing iconic songs for 50 years! I've never heard anyone say they didn't like Elton John. TRUE GREATNESS!!
What shocks most of us older folks is that you never heard this song before. Ewan McGregor shocked me with his singing voice when he sang this in the movie "Moulin Rouge". "Tiny Dancer" and "Candle in the Wind" are other must listens. Sir Elton actually got married to protect his career from the rumor mill. I actually don't know anyone who could be openly gay in 1970.
Sir Elton John , has SOOOO many amazing songs one of the greatest piano players , and songwriters ever ! Check out his catalog it goes on and on of great hits
On this day in 1998, Elton John (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight) became Sir Elton John, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. He was awarded the title of Knight Bachelor for "services to music and charitable services". They say that life is about living life to the fullest and what you leave behind. Well Sir! You definitly left your mark with all the good you have done for us all!
SO much great music: this, Tiny Dancer, 60 Years On, Candle in the Wind, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Tonight, Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word, Nobody Wins, and then The Lion King, Road to El Dorado, Aida, this man is an icon, an amazing artist, a musical genius. He is just part of so many peoples' lives. Thank you for this. His live concert from Australia is my fave album. Thanks for this great reaction!
This was his first hit in 1970 and it was a landmark. Other early songs by Elton John you’re going to want to find our “Levon,’ ‘Tiny Dancer,’ ‘Bennie and the Jets,” “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting,’ ‘Funeral for A Friend’ and “Goodbye Norma Jean” which he wrote for Marilyn Monroe, but sang for Princess Diana at her funeral. Elton John has one of the deepest catalogs of great music of any artist in the Rock era. You owe it to yourself to do a deep dive.
Felt like crying (7:52): Also, President Joe Biden surprised Sir Elton John with the National Humanities Medal, (recognizes Sir Elton John’s musical achievements and his advocacy work to end HIV and AIDS) which brought Elton to almost tears.
One of the most selfless lyrics ever written: "how wonderful life is, while you're in the World." He could have said life is wonderful when I'm with you, or life is wonderful when we're together, or talk about how you hold me etc.. Instead he says that no matter where you are, regardless of if I'm with you or not, even if I never see you again, this World is a better place just because you are in it somewhere, and knowing that you are present in this World, somewhere out there, makes life wonderful for me. 🥰 Oml I'm gona cry too lol
This was Elton at the start of his career, before he had any money or fame. The song was written by Bernie Taupin, who was about 17 years old at the time. It was Elton's first major hit, that started his long list of wonderful songs & music. The song is about a girl that Bernie loved in his youth.
Hallo, the first Time i heard Elton John was Candle in the Wind and i was a young boy 14 yaers old and so in love with the Melodie and my girlftiend, unforgettible. Now I am 65 years old and have the same feeling when i listen to this Musik.
The most fascinating thing about Elton John is he didn't have a solo UK number 1 record until Sacrifice came out in 1990. He was ubiquitous, his back catalogue could hold its own against any pop star you name, everyone wanted to duet with him, but success kept dancing out of reach for so long. Then of course he set a world record for Princess Diana's funeral. Astonishing. My favourite song is I'm Still Standing. Even as a small child, the lyric "if our love was just a circus you'd be a clown by now" had a haunting quality to it. And that video with all the painted bodies is a thing of pure art.
We are to love the person and not their faults (Sins) because we all sin and have no right to judge others. I enjoy listening to Elton John always have
A guy I was seeing after graduation, used to play this song for me to express his love for me..tragically our love song ended as he was killed riding with a drunk driver. This song will always bring a tear and smile to my face at the same time.
At a EJ concert in Philly I attended, some guy in the audience was planning to ask his girl to marry him and via a friend of a friend got a message thru to Elton and asked if he could dedicate this song to her and as Elton was signing this song, this guy proposed. It was so nice of him (Elton) to do this. Sweet moment at that concert.
Candle in the wind and Daniel are must listens, and dip into his goodbye yellow brick road album you won't be disappointed..love from Bonnie Scotland...
You can't go wrong with his music in the 70s. Get the following albums: Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water, Honky Chateau, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player, and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
You hit the nail on the head when you said it could be for anyone. I put this song on a playlist that I made for my granddaughter. It's just about pure love. ❤
I was lucky enough to see him in Nashville on his final Yellow Brink Road tour. He was unreal. He had just gotten over COVID but you would have never known. It was amazing. I will forever cherish getting to see him. What an amazing Man.❤ Elton
THIS was the song that made Elton famous. It was his first hit, maybe, his first attempt,in 1970 and the rest is history. Ask any fan 10 songs from Elton and you will get completely different lists. FUN FACT. His real name is Reg Dwight and his Uncle played in English football's F A Cup Final in 1959 and scored an early goal and then broke his leg later in the match. I saw him play, in later years for my team and his name was: Roy Dwight.
Elton is a treasure. He has given us SO much wonderful music. Britt, go back and listen to anything from his early Madman Across The Water or his Honkey Chateau LP's. Truly incredible, and he just kept on churning them out. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
This duo - Elton John (composing such beautiful melodies and singing and playing the piano) and Bernie Taupin (writing amazing lyrics) was one of the best in Music History EVER! If you're not that familiar with his music, get ready for such a long journey. He's never been my favorite artist, but I always loved many of his hits (you're absolutely right, it doesn't matter his sexual orientation): "Skyline pigeon"; "I guess that's why they call it the blues"; "I'm still standing"; "Sad songs (say so much)"; "Don't go breaking my heart"; "Nikita". But if you wanna do something really outstanding, way different from what other people who react to songs use to do, then I recommend for you such a beautiful and underrated Elton John's song - "I want love" - its official music video. Spoiler alert: in this video, you'll see a certain "guest" - Robert Downey Jr. Nice journey for you.
In my early teens I was quite a fan of Elton John, I still am. I remember someone saying he was lame because he was gay. That was when I decided I don't care - the music was awesome! But I understand, it wasn't something you were used to and if I am honest with myself it felt a little scary. I don't know why. It just did. But man did I get my friend back with Freddy Mercury a few weeks later! I remember talking to my mom about it and she laughed and she said yeah, it is kind of obvious once you see it - and sometimes when you are a fan or friend your mind can trick you to have it your way. She mentioned Liberace that was popular when her mother was young - women loved him in more ways than one and they couldn't see the signs, despite the grand flair, bling, and candelabras. According to my mom fights started over weather Liberace was gay or not.
When we were following Elton John we literally followed his coming to terms with his sexuality. It was before the pride movement. All he was to us was Elton. When he came out no one cared.
In the late 70s when I was 14... I used to sing this song to my girlfriend. We ended up getting married....had 3 kids and now...45 years later we have 10 grandchildren. Needless to say....I'm glad I sang her "Your Song".
I just discovered your channel today ~ June 14th, 2024. I love your fresh emotional reactions to songs that I had almost forgotten. I'm past 70, and your eyes are also pretty, too, as you discover all the beauty music brings. Peace!
One of his most beautiful songs along with Tiny Dancer and my favorite, High Flying Bird. Another that I really love is "Pinky" on the Caribou album. Bernie Taupin who wrote most of Elton's greatest songs was a magical lyricist. You really should find a live recording of Elton doing his songs. So good!
Thank you for the reaction, Britt!! Please put these two early Elton John/Bernie Taupin collaborations on your list to get to someday: "Levon" and "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters"! And during this reaction you said, "My job is to be love and to spread love." You deserve a huge pay raise, you do your job so well. And that is why I keep coming back to your channel!!
Very well said, this song could be about any type of relationship. That's why its timeless. Also, Elton John has a lot, A LOT, of songs for you to check out: Daniel, Levon, Nikita, Someome Saved My Life Tonight, Funeral for a Friend, Candle in the Wind, That's Why They Call it the Blues, The Way You Look Tonight, Saturday Nights Are Alright For Fighting, Border Song, Skyline Pigeon, Benny and the Jets, Take Me to the Pilot, and on and on and on.
Britt you have a beautiful smile and just as beautiful soul. I would love to meet although that will never happen as I'm up in Canada and don't travel. You just seem like a kind, fun person and your kids are lucky you're their mom. Elton John sang Candle in the Wind. He was asked to sing at Princess Diana's funeral and changed the words of it for her at her service and it showed the love he had for her and the heartache he felt when she was gone. You would miss out on something pretty amazing if you don't listen to it because you're saying its good for the soul.
Eltons singing with bernie talpins words to me , a warm hug for those days we were lost. Tiny dancer , song for guy, and this one. Reliable hugs when you need one. Thats what i got from elton. Im 58 male and apreciated what he brought from the beggining .not for what he was but what he gives.😊
I am so glad Elton John has found his way to be appreciated by you. I think your reaction channel is so good when you dive into new musical discoveries. (Billy Joel and Hall & Oats this year...Linda Rhonstadt, Shania Twain, Dolly Parton in the past....you ought to revisit them, by the way) With Elton, there are hundreds of songs to sample. Permit me to suggest two...."I'm Still Standing" (great music video from the 80s) and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" (a dramatic ballad from Elton in his prime).
He built what resembled a castle near to where I lived. He built it for his partners parents who lived in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. It took 2-3 years at least to complete. It was built on a high elevation that allowed him/ them to see Lake Ontario about 16 miles away. Amazing!!
I love your comments. Elton was huge when I was in high school (1974-77). My girlfriends and adored him! There were rumors that he was gay. Then one day he came out, and my girlfriends and I had to defend him to the stupid guys that thought it mattered.
Elton was the front of a music duo. The lyricist is Bernie Taupin, Elton composes the music and performs to his lyrics.. Elton came out long ago but Bernie is straight..
@@Ray_____ It's a fact that Bernie wrote this song (Elton himself said it) and he wrote most of Elton's songs. I'm not sure why Elton would say that and credit Taupin with writing the lyrics on all of his hits when it's not the case, and I'm not sure why some people have to swear the sky is red when it's blue just to draw attention to themselves. You just keep smacking that head, it might just get some part of it working one day.
I always loved this song and I love your words. The world would be a lot better place if everyone just minded their own business and didn't judge others based on their own set of beliefs. We're human and one of the best things about humankind is our uniqueness. It's what helps make life interesting, spectacular and flourish.
OMG, your making a 67 year old guy cry. Elton has taken me on a ride since the mid 70's. He's remake with star dua lupa (sorry for misspelling) recently was awesome. Love your thoughts about music and life! Peace from Northern Michigan
This was his second studio-released record (1970) and it launched him into international stardom. Not a weak song on this record. I got to see him in 2014 at the Virginia Beach Ampitheater and although he could not hit the high notes as earlier in his career, he still absolutely CRUSHED rocketman... a lifetime memorable moment for me at age 67..... words cannot describe that performance. There is a musical fantasy movie that released in 2019 entitled Rocketman, Taron Egerton plays EJ and did a very good job of it.Elton John's talent level is simply amazing (He has won 6 Grammys throughout his career). I very much enjoyed your reaction, as I do all of your reactions, TY.
I think what makes this song great is it tells a relatable story (something modern music has forgotten how to do, imo), and he sings it as a character in that story...a singer as a story teller. Also, the lyrics match that story perfectly. The words sound like it was written by a naïve, shy young person, in love for the first time. There are even typos in the letter ('If I was a sculptor, but then again, no...').
I wish I could express my thoughts as easily as this to those who I love(d). I was into hard rock most of my early life but Elton John and Barry Manilow had the songs I turned to during those troubled relationships and breakups.
"Your song" has been one of the most popular wedding songs in Sweden for many years. For example, I played the piano and sang it at my nephews wedding some years ago.
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics for just about all of Elton’s songs…….Elton wrote the music. They were an iconic team.
Yep, and they've never been in the same room together when it happens. You can't have one without the other.
It's entirely likely Bernie wrote it TO Elton.
They aren’t dead. Are not were 😉
@Bear78420 exactly what I was going to say
Yeah, I hate it when the kids think that Elton was responsible for all the music. Yes, he was a great performer, a good piano player and music writer, but I always loved the lyrics - done by Taupin - the most.
Not only do I love your reviews but “just be kind” is a profound affirmation of who you are as a person and a Christian. We need more like you
Christianity has nothing to do with it but other than that, agree.
"Just be kind." And THAT is why we watch you, Britt.
Elton's lyricist partner in song-writing, wrote these lyrics when he (Bernie Taupin) was just 17 years old. Elton has said in interviews that as he's aged he's increasingly amazed at how beautiful of love song such a young & inexperienced person could ever write. Magic! In return for a LARGE money contribution to an EJ charity, but your point remains.
I agree. Speaking as a conservative Christian.
I’m a conservative Christian and a huge Elton John fan.
Remember, Elton doesn't write the lyrics, Bernie Taupin does.
Elton just takes those great lyrics and turns them into magic!
One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded...period.
"Your Song" was his first major hit (#8 in the USA). He was part of the whole singer/songwriter trend of those years. Like Carole King, John wrote the music and someone else, Bernie Taupin, wrote the lyrics. That platonic partnership lasted for decades with much success. Miss. Britt I would just like to say, you are a beautiful human being with a gentle sprit and a truly loving soul. your reactions always make myself and my dad's day brighter and our sprits a little lighter, and just make us both feel better.
I sing this to my wife but cry all the way thru. One of the most beautiful songs ever written
THE MAN BY ALOE BLACC SAMPLED IT!! “You can tell everybody, I’m the man I’m the man I’m the man” 🎶
This was the first SIR Elton John song. It was his first "hit". I've been a fan ever since.
DEEP rabbit hole.
wasn't "Spirit in the sky" released earlier?
@@johnwilkinson4683 No. A song isn't automatically "hit".
I absolutely love this song, it makes you feel good deep in the heart of your soul 🌈
One of true greats! Bernie wrote the lyrics and Elton the music! They have been writing iconic songs for 50 years! I've never heard anyone say they didn't like Elton John. TRUE GREATNESS!!
Favorite quote, Brit: "Hate is always foolish, and Love is always wise. Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind!"
His first hit and prob still his best song.
Well said!! Love this song and also love Elton John. He's an incredible man.
Your Song was the song that catapulted Elton John to stardom. When the song came out everyone was mesmerized!
I really liked Ewan's version of this song and was also surprised at his singing voice in Moulin Rouge.
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Sir Elton John , has SOOOO many amazing songs one of the greatest piano players , and songwriters ever ! Check out his catalog it goes on and on of great hits
He's s musical genius,love all his songs😊

More like 50 years, but your point is taken.
@@terryomalley1974 I was mentioning his song that is titled "Sixty Years On"
@garylife5320 OH, I see. That must be a fairly new song because I've never heard of it.
@@terryomalley1974 Released on his 1970 Album, simply titled Elton John. One of his earliest songs.
@garylife5320 Interesting. But, not one of his better known hits.

Went to a concert of his just him and his piano he sang non stop except drinking some water for over 3 hours. Elton is amazing.
I saw him in 2004 & he was amazing. Three hours of great music
I think his piano playing is underrated. It’s just so beautiful!
This song makes me cry every time. In a good way :)
Felt like crying (7:52): Also, President Joe Biden surprised Sir Elton John with the National Humanities Medal, (recognizes Sir Elton John’s musical achievements and his advocacy work to end HIV and AIDS) which brought Elton to almost tears.
One of the most beautiful love songs and fabulous arrangements of all time. And the harp! Goose bumps every time.
He is so much better a singer than people give him credit for because he makes it sound so easy.

My favorite musical artist. "Philadephia Freedom" is my favorite song of his.
That song was written about the pro tennis team in Philly at the time, the Philadelphia Freedom", with Billie Jean King, a very good friend of Elton's

Love, love, love Mona Lisa’s and Mad Hatters❣️
Amazing!!
Love lies bleeding/ funeral for a friend will blow your mind!
Such a sweet song
I love your comments. Elton was huge when I was in high school (1974-77). My girlfriends and adored him! There were rumors that he was gay. Then one day he came out, and my girlfriends and I had to defend him to the stupid guys that thought it mattered.
First rock concert i went to was Elton John in 1976. It was crazy,
Elton was the front of a music duo. The lyricist is Bernie Taupin, Elton composes the music and performs to his lyrics.. Elton came out long ago but Bernie is straight..
btw. The song is about a girl. Bernie Taupin wrote 99% of Elton's lyrics.
You keep believing that. Smh
One of my favourite songs ever!
I think you'll love Elton singing "Benny and the Jets" on Soul Train back in the 70's, it's on youtube and it's really lowdown funky fun.
...AND he sang Philadelphia Freedom on the same Soul Train episode...Sir EJ was also the FIRST white performer to appear on the series!
One of my favorite songs since it came out😊
I think what makes this song great is it tells a relatable story (something modern music has forgotten how to do, imo), and he sings it as a character in that story...a singer as a story teller. Also, the lyrics match that story perfectly. The words sound like it was written by a naïve, shy young person, in love for the first time. There are even typos in the letter ('If I was a sculptor, but then again, no...').
Get ready to go down the EXTREMELY deep rabbit hole that is Elton John.
I heard this song, just about the time I got drafted. Brings back memories of a girl I never got to express these thoughts to.
Have you heard Travelin' Soldier by the Dixie Chicks?
Love thy neighbor as thyself. Love them all. Let God sort them out.
I wish I could express my thoughts as easily as this to those who I love(d).
I was into hard rock most of my early life but Elton John and Barry Manilow had the songs I turned to during those troubled relationships and breakups.
Your song perfect wedding song
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics for Elton's mother who let them live with her when they were starting out. He was about 17
"Could be about frickin turtle" ❤❤❤. I sing that song to my cat :)
"Your song" has been one of the most popular wedding songs in Sweden for many years. For example, I played the piano and sang it at my nephews wedding some years ago.
Love you for your views of the world. The world's a better place with you in it. Peace ✌️
