Hi Steve, I agree - it's the delivery of those beautiful lyrics and the phrasing that makes all the more touching. This song makes me very emotional because 25 years ago my dad surprised my mum, sister and me with something very special. He had managed to salvage some very old Agfa Family video spools ( showing my age - I grew up in the 70's and was a teen in the 80s :-) of us as kids goofing around. These spools were consigned to history when the projector packed up and they stopped manufacturing them. Some 30 years later, my dad took the time to find someone clever who clipped them together to put them onto a video cassette and sat us down to watch them. We didn't know what we were about to watch until the screen came on. There was never any sound on these videos so my dad compiled a soundtrack to accompany them and Your Song was the opening song. We all collapsed in tears of joy at seeing these grainy videos of us all and so this song holds a very special place in my heart as a souvenir of my family throughout some five decades. Keep doing what you do and spreading cheer with your videos. Warm Greetings from Nats in London, UK
I think Elton John is a musical genius. Here is a fact that will blow your socks off - in 1972, Elton John was so popular that his albums accounted for 2% of all album sales worldwide.
Bernie Taupin was only seventeen when he wrote the lyrics to this song. He claims he doesn't even remember who the girl was that he wrote it about - some crush he had.
He came to my hometown, Bakersfield, CA as a warm up after being sick. The concert sold out immediately. He was shocked, didn't expect the welcome. His encode was the longest one he's done in his career.
Can you believe that Bernie sends Elton lyrics and he does his incredible legendary thing to create Songs Like This?! 😳🥳🥳🔥They are both in songwriters hall of fame.
You can never go wrong with Elton John.. this was the song that made him famous. I’ve seen him live twice in the last five years here in Australia, he will always hold a special place in my heart! ❤
This was his first big hit. Bernie Taupin gave him the lyrics to write music for, and he had it done in a matter of minutes. Elton John could write music for virtually anything. He was on a talk show one time, and they asked him to improvise music on the spot for appliance instructions. It was amazing to see! I did a cover of this for Valentine's Day this year on my RUclips channel.
As a producer you might find this interesting. When Elton was on his first tour of the U.S., he and his band was a trio (Elton singing lead and playing piano, with Nigel Olsson on drums/vocals and Dee Murray on bass/vocals). One of the songs from Elton's album was an orchestral piece called 'Sixty Years On'. They converted the song to be played with piano, drums, and bass. A concert from that tour was released as the album '11-17-70', the date of the concert. The live version with the trio is much better than the original studio version imo. Even if you don't make a video, it might pique your professional interest. Also, the way Elton and the band created music was pretty strange. By 1972 Elton's band consisted of Olsson and Murray, plus Davey Johnstone on guitars/vocals. When creating an album, they would live and work at the studio. Bernie Taupin would write a bunch of poems/lyrics for Elton. Elton would get up in the morning, pick a lyric to work on from the stack, and just put it to music. He would spend no more than 15 minutes doing this. And with nothing written down, would go and play the tune for the band, running through it a couple of times. The band would listen and figure out in their heads what they would do for the song. Then the four of them would go into the recording studio together. They'd mess around for a few minutes...then the red light would go on and they'd just play the song. They would run through it generally between 1-5 times, and when they thought they nailed it...they went back the beginning of the process. The song 'Daniel' the got in one take...their first try is what's on the album. For each song the band did whatever they wanted, and usually there was no input at all from Elton or anyone else. The band also wrote, arranged, and sang the backing vocals on their own. So working like this, they wrote and recorded the double album 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' in 1973, with 22 original songs, in two weeks. That included vocals, overdubs, backing vocals, everything. And in 1973, in addition to the released double album, they also created and released the album 'Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player' in the same year. When they covered 'Pinball Wizard' in 1975, they created the entire song from start to finish in one go, in less than four hours.
Beautiful song! Elton John collaborated with Bernie Taupin since 1967 on more than 30 albums. They were one of the best song writing teams. Bernie wrote the lyrics & Elton supplied the melody. They had so many great hits together such as "Levon", "Tiny Dancer", "Honky Cat, "Rocket Man", "Crocodile Rock", "Daniel", "Bennie & The Jets", "Candle In The Wind", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" etc.
I think I’m correct…….This is Elton’s first huge hit. Another piano man, Billy Joel’s first huge it was Piano Man. The beauty of music, 53yrs old, thank you for the song and much enjoyment in the podcast and journey ❤

You have to check a lot of Elton John. He is amazing and have amazing gems. Check the duet Elton John and George Michael, live en earlys 90 in Chicago, with the song from Elton "Don't let the sun goes down on me". Bernard Taupin wrote the songs. And, Elton made the compositions and sang. I love his voice. Big kiss from Portugal. Ana
According to the movie, Bernie wrote these lyrics in one sitting at the breakfast table. He handed them to Elton, and went upstairs to clean up. Elton took the lyrics to the piano, and proceeded to put this music with the lyrics. Bernie heard him from upstairs, and walked back down in amazement, as Elton was singing the lyrics that he had just written.
Love to see Elton on the channel! Some songs you’d like to do on here are; Goodbye Yellow a brick Road, Mona Lisas and Mad Haters, Someone Saved my Life Tonight and Don’t Let the sun go down on me (duet with George Michael. Just listen to his 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' album. Almost every song was a hit for him. The actual title song was rerecorded by Elton when Princess Diana died as a tribute to her. He changed a few words and the title. It became know as 'Goodbye Norma Jean' and he makes many references to Diana. They were great friends. Many have listed songs by Elton so I will keep it simple. His song 'Daniel's Song' is and will always be my favorite. Trivia: In the movie adaptation of The Who's rock opera 'Tommy', Elton plays the roll of ' The Pinball Wizard'. He is so good. The movie is very ... campy but the mucic and the guest cast is outstanding. I am talking about Elton, Ann Margaret, Oliver Reed and Tina Turner as the Acid Queen. It you were a rock fan, and I was and still am, the movie was a must see.
The title track was Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The song rewritten for Diana, Princess of Wales was Candle in the Wind and was called Goodbye England’s Rose (Candle in the Wind 1997). The original song was written as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, although Bernie Taupin originally wanted to reference Montgomery Clift, and it was on the GYBR album.

Yeah, I agree. I haven’t been a subscriber very long but have watch a lot of your reactions and may not be able to fully say that I feel like I know you but feel like we would get along and have things to discuss. I do appreciate your efforts here. I like your style and attitude.
Really appreciate that! Thanks for the kind words and being a supporter of the channel! 😁
