I'm 63 & my Mom took my Sister and I to see Roy Clark perform live at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock, AR. This was in the 70's. He played the guitar, banjo, trumpet, clarinet and who knows what else. This man could play darn near any instrument I know. Thanks for your reaction video, I really liked it.

He also plays jaw-dropping muted 128th notes on “Caravan” as a percussive statement. Not only was Roy a master when it came to mastering string instruments, he was a full blown entertainer. He was witty and funny on a show called Hee Haw. Not only would he and a who's who in country would perform, but he would do sketches and skits, similar to SNL or Laugh In. Hee Haw was clean family entertainment from the late 60s thru the early 90s. Yeah some of the humor and the jokes were cheesy at times, but was really popular for about 25 years. Yeah, Roy was an Awesome! Musician. Being a songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist myself, playing guitar, drums and keyboards, I've always liked a lot of different kinds of musicians and different kinds of music. I have a lot of musician friends who play not only rock but other styles of music as well. I'm a self-taught guitarist, however not on drums or keyboards. On drums I studied under a very good jazz drummer and on keyboards I studied under a guy who was well educated in both jazz and classical keyboards and piano. He's the one who told me that if you can master both jazz and classical music on keyboards, piano or guitar, then you can play any kind of music. This is the reason why Swedish metal guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen is such a great guitar player. He studied classical music and then switched over to playing metal music. I know a lot of musicians; however, I know very few who can play this technique of guitar. This is a Spanish guitar technique called "flamenco-style guitar". I have one friend who studied classical guitar music in college who could play like this and another friend who went to college on a bass guitar scholarship and then switched to learning classical guitar too while he was in college, and he could play this as well. It's not the kind of stuff that any guitarist can just play because I play guitar, and I can't play that. And I know a lot of other good rock guitar players that can't play that either. If you would like to hear something else like this, then listen to that old song by the band The Monkees titled "Valleri". There is some of this style of playing in it and it sounds really cool. It's played by session guitarist Louie Shelton. Cool reaction.

The Malaguena is Spanish Cave music. there are also videos of him doing this piece with a 12 string and the large Spanish Guitar. He and Glenn Campbell have real guitar players bow to them. I learned basic guitar playing with the Roy Clark Big Note Songbook. I eventually learned to play some of this song. I saw him once in Branson MO. I have always watched him in awe, regardless of whether it was guitar, banjo, or fiddle. I was in heaven that night.

You should find a video of him playing this on a 12-string. He breaks, I think, 2 strings when he goes into that part that you talked about being almost like a slap bass part. Pretty wild stuff!
You need to find old episodes of "Hee Haw"...he played his whole catalog at some point on the show. I think Hee Haw ran for 20 years, but dont hold me to that. It's also nice to see Buck Owens and Roy play together.
Yep, Roy was fantastic! He could be seen as a regular cast member of the early seventies, country-oriented variety tv show, Hee-Haw. Another underrated guitarist is Glenn Campbell! And yes, this could definitely fall into the “flamenco” category. For another, possibly unexpected flamenco performance, check out Eddie Van Halen’s solo track, “Spanish Fly”, from their second album.
I was riveted to see and meet Mr Roy at his theater in Branson, MO. Mind blowing performance. I was force-fed Hee Haw in my formative years, but now can actually appreciate all of the talent on that show that broadcast every Saturday, lol. It’s pronounced “Mal-uh-gain-ya. Great comments, Steven! Now...if you watch Victor the Guitar Nerd (on his own channel...not just with Dan Vasc), you'll find more stuff like this. Victor is a total guitar wizard...as was Roy Clark (who passed away on November 15, 2018). This particular song was one of my mom's favorites to play on her violin (who was born in 1923, and played violin from the time she hit age 5). I grew up hearing it in all sorts of different versions, by multi-talented people playing a huge variety of instruments. I still love it! 😀 The writer (who sometimes has been called the Cuban Gershwin) of this wonderful piece of history, was 20th century composer Ernesto Lecuona. In 1933 (when Mom was 10, and WELL-established as a first-rate, prize-winning violinist, here in South Dakota) He wrote “Malaguena” as the sixth and final movement of his Suite Andalucia for piano, referring to the southern Spanish port city of Malaga. Since THEN, the song has been played on just about any instrument you can imagine. It really has kind of become the test for musicians, everywhere...even to this day. In 1964, it was one of the FIRST tests I had to pass during my correspondence course in accordion-playing. Whew!!! I also still have the piano music for it, but...sigh...I haven't had a piano to play for YEARS, and...wow...I think it would be extremely hard to learn all over again...not sure I'd even want to TRY! 🤪 As for the show in which the three men pulled this off, the regulars ("other dudes") from Neil Simon's sitcom "The Odd Couple," were played by Tony Randall as Felix Unger (seated in the middle of the three) and Jack Klugman as Oscar Madison (seated at the far right, looking at them on the screen). You need to check out Roy Clark and Glen Campbell playing "Ghost Riders in the Sky." Roy is playing an electric 6 six string while Glen is playing an electric 12 string. It is simply amazing.

We were treated to this kind of stuff all the time. Not only from Roy Clark, but also Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed & Chet Atkins. And then we saw them playing together with big smiles on their faces. Man, love Roy Clark! He's such an incredible musician. My Grandpa was a musician ( as am i) and he knew a lot of those guys from Hee-Haw. My mom said they use to come by the house when the were in town. Crazy good.

When I was a little girl, we would watch Hee Haw every Saturday evening. My mom hated country music, but she loved Hee Haw, and a big part of the reason for that was Roy Clark. He was my favorite too.

Great reaction brother, to a certain classic that I remember watching at the time. He blew me away as a guitar player, because most of us focus on the left hand, but he clearly mastered the right. And what a perfect style to Master the right hand with, acoustic folk flamenco. Those triple strums take a long time to master, but these rhythms are common in this style of music. When I was a kid, my hated grandmother used to torture me with "Hee Haw". (Ask your parents. Better yet, ask your grandparents.) Well, I got older and wiser and lamented what I had previously sneered at. When I met my Roy Buchanan-worshiping husband, the next guitar player on his list was Roy Clark. For *flamenco* work. The guy was just amazing. So, when I saw you had this, naturally, I jumped on it. Y'know, you're quickly becoming my favourite "drummers are idiots" counterpoint. 2:21 Yep, that was pretty much the face *i* was making, too. I recall on Hee Haw, he used to do guitar duets with a chap called Buck Owens. I'm guessing some of their work you'd do well to look into. Thoroughly enjoyed this one, young man. Love your channel!

Also worth checking out is Roy Clark singing a heart-wrenching ballad that made it to the top of the charts. You need to find old episodes of "Hee Haw"...he played his whole catalog at some point on the show. I think Hee Haw ran for 20 years, but dont hold me to that. It's also nice to see Buck Owens and Roy play together.

I was riveted to see and meet Mr Roy at his theater in Branson, MO. Mind blowing performance. I was force-fed Hee Haw in my formative years, but now can actually appreciate all of the talent on that show that broadcast every Saturday, lol.

Great comments, Steven! Now...if you watch Victor the Guitar Nerd (on his own channel...not just with Dan Vasc), you'll find more stuff like this. Victor is a total guitar wizard...as was Roy Clark (who passed away on November 15, 2018).
This particular song was one of my mom's favorites to play on her violin (who was born in 1923, and played violin from the time she hit age 5). I grew up hearing it in all sorts of different versions, by multi-talented people playing a huge variety of instruments. I still love it! 😀
The writer (who sometimes has been called the Cuban Gershwin) of this wonderful piece of history, was 20th century composer Ernesto Lecuona. In 1933 (when Mom was 10, and WELL-established as a first-rate, prize-winning violinist, here in South Dakota) He wrote “Malaguena” as the sixth and final movement of his Suite Andalucia for piano, referring to the southern Spanish port city of Malaga. Since THEN, the song has been played on just about any instrument you can imagine. It really has kind of become the test for musicians, everywhere...even to this day.
In 1964, it was one of the FIRST tests I had to pass during my correspondence course in accordion-playing. Whew!!! I also still have the piano music for it, but...sigh...I haven't had a piano to play for YEARS, and...wow...I think it would be extremely hard to learn all over again...not sure I'd even want to TRY! 🤪
As for the show in which the three men pulled this off, the regulars ("other dudes") from Neil Simon's sitcom "The Odd Couple," were played by Tony Randall as Felix Unger (seated in the middle of the three) and Jack Klugman as Oscar Madison (seated at the far right, looking at them on the screen).
The two of them still remain in the memories of TONS of us, as the funniest TV duo, ever.

You need to check out Roy Clark and Glen Campbell playing "Ghost Riders in the Sky." Roy is playing an electric 6 six string while Glen is playing an electric 12 string. It is simply amazing.

You have to check out Glen and Roy playing a duet on Hee Haw. Glen has always been known as one of greatest guitar players of all time. He usually plays a 12 string guitar.
When I was a little girl, we would watch Hee Haw every Saturday evening. My mom hated country music, but she loved Hee Haw, and a big part of the reason for that was Roy Clark. He was my favorite too.

Great reaction brother, to a certain classic that I remember watching at the time. He blew me away as a guitar player, because most of us focus on the left hand, but he clearly mastered the right. And what a perfect style to Master the right hand with, acoustic folk flamenco. Those triple strums take a long time to master, but these rhythms are common in this style of music. When I was a kid, my hated grandmother used to torture me with "Hee Haw". (Ask your parents. Better yet, ask your grandparents.) Well, I got older and wiser and lamented what I had previously sneered at. When I met my Roy Buchanan-worshiping husband, the next guitar player on his list was Roy Clark. For *flamenco* work. The guy was just amazing. So, when I saw you had this, naturally, I jumped on it. Y'know, you're quickly becoming my favourite "drummers are idiots" counterpoint. 2:21 Yep, that was pretty much the face *i* was making, too. I recall on Hee Haw, he used to do guitar duets with a chap called Buck Owens. I'm guessing some of their work you'd do well to look into. Thoroughly enjoyed this one, young man. Love your channel!
