I've never quite understood what Dan Akroyd was doing there. Everyone else is musical legends and icons. But Dan? He's a comedian. Yes, he did Blues Brothers, but still... kind of the odd man out in this grouping. 😄
The Springsteen / Wonder duet part is my fave. As you say, their contrasting voices played beautifully off each other. Also notice that despite Richie and Jackson writing it, they didn't give themselves the biggest parts. No egos here. :)
I’ve been binge watching the reaction videos of this song after watching the documentary. This is the first one that I’ve watched with someone from my generation. I enjoyed watching your joy of seeing people who were like good friends that you hadn’t seen for a long time. ❤
That solo back-and-forth between Stevie Wonder & Bruce Springsteen was actually shot & recorded after hours, after everyone else had left, and Quincy Jones, who felt the song needed an extra punch, actually called back Stevie & Bruce to record that one segment, which Quincy later incorporated in with the rest of the song.
James Ingram was very underrated as a singer and pianist. Quincy Jones basically kind of "forced" him to become a singer because of how beautiful his tone and voice was.
The amount of talent shown in this video is crazy. All are top notch artists from many different eras & genres of music. Don't think something like this will ever happen again. Sadly quite a few artists that are featured are no longer with us.

I was 10 when this song came out. I recognized everyone back then because I lived for MTV and the country music channels (and adults who listened to some of these artists). But I never appreciated it until I got older. The amount of talent in this video is absolutely insane. RIP to all those no longer with us. Watch the behind the scenes/making of this. It's awesome.

To understand... in the mid 80s, Africa was experiencing severe drought and famine. A group of British rockers lead by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure released a record (Do They Know its Christmas) with all proceeds going to famine relief in Africa. Then USA rockers lead by Harry Belafonte, Ken Kragen and Quincey Jones, recorded the video here with the same goal. The last effort was LIVE AID. Phil Collins flew on the SST Concord to all three continents and performed in USA, UK and Australia in the same concert. It was televised on MTV. Incredible concert. The finale song in the UK included Bob Geldof, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and most of the huge array of rockers that performed throughout the weekend event. The videos of the Uk Christmas record and that finale are on You Tube. They raised over $200 million and it was sent to Africa. I am very proud to be part of the generation that gave so much to humankind. ✌🏻
There was some initial tension by certain people who either didn’t like the sound or didn’t want to be next to another singer. That all ended when Bruce Springsteen told the group: “ I’m here to save lives and feed people”. After that they all came together. That’s why he’s the Boss.

Then Canadians coming together as "Northern Lights" to sing "Tears Are Not Enough." That was a historic recording in 1985. All of these legendary artists getting together for a charitable cause. Classic song. Mama Gap and Baby Gap, you both did a great job recognizing all of those music legends.
Jones convened the marathon recording session of “We Are the World” at around 10 p.m. on the evening of January 28, 1985, immediately following the conclusion of the American Music Awards ceremony held just that night. There is a video of how this was recorded and who would sing what.
There was a group of UK artist called BAND AID ''Do they know its Christmas'', who feature British artist such as George Michael, Phil Collins, Boy George, Sting and many more. This came out before USA for Africa. I know Christmas has come and gone, but you should play it sometime and see how many of the British star you know .
Stevie, and Bruce, actually came back to where they were all singing, after they were all done, because they needed to fill in some minutes to complete the video.
Happens often, that people forget about Bob Dylan (wrote over 1000 songs for collegues)and in the backline Harry Belafonte, who died sadly this year. (Greatness of the 70's and early 80's) Mom should know him...
James INgram is the guy toward the end with a solo. He also had a part in the beginning. Al Jarreau was another that had a solo that you may not have known. They both passed away a few years ago. And YES...Kenny Rogers was VERY ruggedly handsome before he got plastic surgery. Even he said himself he made a mistake with that b/c it didn't go well. So now you need to do the one the European artists did "Do They KNow its Christmas Time" by Live Aid.
You were right to mention the other singers the Ladies forgot to mention. But you forgot Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Harry Belafonte, etc. Still, you did a good job !!!
Wonder today how many artist would check their ego at the door and do something like this. Would be hard to find this kind of talent today I would think.

My favorite parts were Cyndi Laupers high note and the emotion she put into it and the second part James Ingram sang. If you like this, you should listen to Band Aid singing Do They Know Its Christmas Time. Just like here, there are a group of superstar musicians singing to support Africa except the musicians are all from the UK

My favourite part is Cyndi Lauper's high "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" in the bridge .. She improvised it, after being asked to add something to Kim Carnes' part .. Kim was not able to give it enough intensity and depth by herself, so they tried having Huey Lewis and Cyndi do harmonies with her .. In the end Cyndi didn't want to overpower Kim, so Huey sang a harmony and Cyndi added her solo bit .. She nailed it !
@@buckeyegirl16 You may not know her name, but Kim had a massive worldwide hit in 1981 with "Bette Davis Eyes", which was No.1 in the US for 9 weeks .. It is still played quite often on radio, so there's a fair chance you have actually heard her because of that song .. Cheers, Wayne
Some people in the choir that didn't have solos included Bette Midler, Tito & Latoya Jackson, Dan Akroyd, Lyndsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac guitarist/vocalist) and John Oats. There were some others that I didn't recognize and maybe a couple I've forgotten but those are the ones I recognized.

I love how they share this moment and mother and daughter get emotional. Two different generations but with taste and feeling for good music and great voices. Never lose that connection because family is one. Congratulations and greetings from PARAGUAY
Another good compilation song is Voices That Care. Early 90s song for the troops in the first gulf war. Tons of celebrities and singing artists. Great video.
Steve Perry sounds awesome, I remember this on MTV great song, I don't know if there be another group of star singing together, there is Rock Stars video too, Daughter knows a lot of singing, good review 🎤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is an awesome video with many musical legends. I love hearing the contrasting vocals, especially Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen. Another awesome video that I cannot stop watching over and over again is Dionne Warwick's "That's what friends are for". Dionne is joined by Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder. You can't watch this video without having a smile on your face and a fuzzy feeling at the end.
The cause preceded the super stars for raising awareness and help needed in Africa and it showed how much empathy each participant had in supporting it. Such a worthy unselfish collabortation. They all put their hearts and souls into doing this. I admire each and every one.
You are so wrong, most of the artists here was asked by sir, bob geldof to be a part of band aid but turned it down, but when "do they know it's christmas" mad the impact it made they had to do something to not look bad in the eyes of their fans.
I've watched many reactions to this video. You, by far, scored the highest on recognition of artists. Thank you for enjoying it so much. I remember when this first came out. It was inspiring to see them all get-together for such an important cause. It continues to inspire me.
Look up the making of usa for africa there is a story telling you of the making and recording of it and why it was done and even what it did do for the starving people in africa
You need to watch the making of the song video hosted by Jane Fonda. It is a really good video to get all the info of who was there and what it took to put together.
This whole creation was put together by Harry Belafonte, the Black man with the sweater singing in the back, an iconic entertainer, musician, actor and Civil Rights figure. He wanted to make an American version of what the British Band Aid production did the year before with “Do They Know It’s Christmas,” and then Lionel and Michael co wrote the song and iconic producer Quincy Jones produced it. My only fault with the whole thing is that one of the men who helped pioneer music as we know it, Smokey Robinson did not have a solo but with the Motown family, he was right upfront with the rest of them, Diana, Stevie, and Michael.
The singer after Bruce and Stevie was the late James Ingram. A couple of his songs are "100 Hundred Ways" and "Just Once," released by Quincy Jones, who was the band leader in this video.
I am shocked the daughter knew so many artists. I am proud of her
I was excited that she knew Kim Carnes. I never see anyone say her name.

That was a historic recording in 1985. All of these legendary artists getting together for a charitable cause. Classic song. Mama Gap and Baby Gap, you both did a great job recognizing all of those music legends.
I miss those days..... I remember the day this was released.
The one you missed with the baritone voice was James Ingram. He sang some of the Disney movies songs.
When Dionne Warrick comes in with "Well send em your heart so they know that someone cares". It gets me every time.
A wave of iconic faces and voices that touched my heart, so happy I caught this before my bedtime, a great way to end my day, many thanks for sharing.
Willy nelson has been old forever lol..great song!! 🤟
That was a powerful song that resonated from 1985 to 2023... Thx ladies for sharing... 💋
Amazing all rock star line up, a one time gathering as many have now passed. Put together so well by Quincey Jones.
It was USA for Africa, surely🇺🇸
Stevie, and Bruce, actually came back to where they were all singing, after they were all done, because they needed to fill in some minutes to complete the video.
And forgive me, but it is so adorable, taking a step back as I watch, to see mom and daughter in sync, moving the same way to the music. Adorable!
Band Aid -- Do They Know it's Christmas, primarily European artists from 1984.
Happens often, that people forget about Bob Dylan (wrote over 1000 songs for collegues)and in the backline Harry Belafonte, who died sadly this year. (Greatness of the 70's and early 80's) Mom should know him...
James Ingram, luv luv
James INgram is the guy toward the end with a solo. He also had a part in the beginning. Al Jarreau was another that had a solo that you may not have known. They both passed away a few years ago. And YES...Kenny Rogers was VERY ruggedly handsome before he got plastic surgery. Even he said himself he made a mistake with that b/c it didn't go well. So now you need to do the one the European artists did "Do They KNow its Christmas Time" by Live Aid.
It's Band Aid. Live Aid is the concert. :)
You were right to mention the other singers the Ladies forgot to mention. But you forgot Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Harry Belafonte, etc. Still, you did a good job !!!
Wonder today how many artist would check their ego at the door and do something like this. Would be hard to find this kind of talent today I would think.
so many years later and it's still actual.
👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 🙏
the ever green song
thanks to all the artists and the crews who made the song had been known to all over the world at that time.
thanks for this reaction. 🙏
Lionel Richiie, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsten, Kenny Rogers, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Cindy Lauper, Dione Warwick, etc. etc.
They did make a new one. It could compare. They should have written their own song, imo.
A "Where's Waldo?".... Find a young Dan Aykroyd. He happened to be in the studio that day and was asked to join for the recording. The rest is history. :)
That’d been so dope to be in that room at that time…💯

You can't forget to watch "Do They Know It's Christmas" by Band Aid (1984), the song that started the whole African charity.
You did pretty good. Two at the beginning that you didn't know were James Ingram and Al Jarreau (the deep voice).
Great reaction!
Yep. I never would have thought that those three would be so GREAT together.👍
Yes! And my other favorite is Steve Perry, The Voice!! Those are my top 2 here ❤
There are only 2 people, even knowing their names, I have never seen or heard of outside this performance. Kim Carnes is one of them. 🤷♀️
Why would Kim Carnes rate more highly than Irene Cara? Irene Cars had two major hits, the latest being in 1983 as to Carnes in 1981.
Make sure to have her watch behind the scenes the making of usa for Africa so she understands why this was created.
One name you didn't mention is the conductor. The legendary master mind behind this song. The great Quincy Jones

Dan aykroyd also appears by accident. In an interview he said he was there looking for a money manager when one of the talent managers asked him if he wanted to be in the video.
Neverever you will find so many Legends of Music in one Room again, this Year I become 60 Years old and I always have Tears running down my Cheeks
I think. Roger Moore was in Live and Let Die as James Bond.
Steve Perry sounds awesome, I remember this on MTV great song, I don't know if there be another group of star singing together, there is Rock Stars video too, Daughter knows a lot of singing, good review 🎤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This song was hughe in my childhood in the 80's.. yES I am old haha
Love this reaction and bringing me back to good old memories
You did a great job of picking who the singers were. The best I've seen so far.
I've listened to this masterpiece at least 60 times and it never gets boring. Unbelievably beautiful
Live aid was the greates show on earth, for thise yougn enough lol to remeber it, we will ne see the likes again
Reportedly they started at 8:00pm and finished at 4:30am. The final recording was done in one take.
You missed Al Jarreau abd James Ingram, the guys with the very deep and cool voice.
Only so much emotion I can take at one sitting💥💥
The cause preceded the super stars for raising awareness and help needed in Africa and it showed how much empathy each participant had in supporting it. Such a worthy unselfish collabortation. They all put their hearts and souls into doing this. I admire each and every one.
You are so wrong, most of the artists here was asked by sir, bob geldof to be a part of band aid but turned it down, but when "do they know it's christmas" mad the impact it made they had to do something to not look bad in the eyes of their fans.
MAGICAL ON EVERY LEVEL ❤❤❤❤❤
The man with the "low, sexy voice" was James Ingram. RIP.
Congrats! You are the 1st ones I;ve seen who knew who recognized Paul Simon
Amazing reaction. I remember when this song came out. And you look Amazing. Especially with that beautiful necklace ♥
This beautiful song was re-released a few years ago with different singers to benefit Haiti when the earthquake struck. It's worth a viewing.
For all the talent assembled here it is James Ingram's performance with Ray Charles that moves me most. Just beautiful.
i thought you were gonna forget willie. i was sitting here yelling like you cant forget willie! i've seen him live was a wonderful show. new btw!
I was 17 when was released the song... WAS AN EPIC MOMENT in music history!
You need to watch the making of the song video hosted by Jane Fonda. It is a really good video to get all the info of who was there and what it took to put together.
Mom and daughter are both stunning and awesome! The guy with the deep voice is James Ingram!
