    Rain can be devastating when you weigh less than a nickel. What are your thoughts on this hummingbird's quest for food?

    • @2hedz77
      @2hedz77 5 лет назад +7

      I love these little babies. I have some Anna's and Rufus that come to my feeder. But on the Canadian west coast we get a ton of rain. Didn't know it affected them so much! In the winter it always worries me when it snows and the feeders freeze. I keep a light bulb underneath in foil wrap to keep it warm but they need to sell heated feeders!

    • @MrMadalien
      @MrMadalien 5 лет назад +17

      I'm not sure if this is scientifically proven but I would assume that smaller animals have different perception of time, for the hummingbirds 2 hours probably feels like 2 days or something like that.

      @@JoeZorzin Every night they enter a hibernation-like state called torpor. They slow their heart rate and breathing to the bare minimum so that they won't starve to death while sleeping. If they haven't eaten enough the day before they will die in their sleep.

    I'd imagine it's like being splashed by a bucket of water every now and then? Still, really amazed by how they can keep their body still as they flap those wings rapidly. Nice one NG
