Researchers think the fungus, found in tropical forests, infects a foraging ant through spores that attach and penetrate the exoskeleton and slowly takes over its behavior. If you'd like to learn more, read on here: on.natgeo.com/2IFsAEU

This is the fungus that the one in The Last of Us is directly based on. Not only did the developers directly state it, but in game there is a military journal you can find, explaining that the fungus is a mutated strain evolved to infect humans, and explicitly labels it a variation of Cordyceps.

What?
It does not take over the mind, it instead takes over the nervous system by bypassing the brain. So that Ant is fully aware of what's happening but instead has no control over their actions which is what makes this type of Fungus different from others. Scary, right?
This is absolutely horrifying
Serious question because I'm curious about this: How do they know that the ants are fully aware? How do you measure/research that?

Imagine this being an outbreak and you go back to an infected town and there is just people in grocery stores pinned to the walls and shelves.. a creepy long strand of demonic looking thick string going through them and blooming them into a horrifying sprawled mess and spreading to the next victim down the isle. You look up and see a person cocooned with spores springing from them.. one on the ground with their ribs wide open and elongated bulb like spores jutting out from the middle. A fungus plague like that would be so creepy. Doesn't cause zombie like symptoms or anything that's too cliche. This is so amazing. No one species can dominate this world. Mother earth keeps everything in equilibrium.
Aakash M. i mean besides all the ones that go extinct
Balance.. as how it should be (sorry had to quote Thanos)
Besides us...
Natural ecosystems are actually relatively unstable, changing and adapting with local conditions. For example, in Lapland, small rodents called lemmings rely on snow covering during winters to keep them safe. As the Finnish winters grow warmer, it's likely that the cover will become insufficient, leaving the lemmings exposed. The owls and hawks will have a feast, but only until the lemmings go extinct. That is likely to change the flora dramatically, as there will be no more lemmings to eat seeds, gnaw on roots and do all that.
Another example would be systematic shark hunting on coral reefs. There are a number of fish that eat corals, including the parrot fish. They're prey for sharks, but only as long as there are sharks. Uncontrolled increase will kill off the corals, consequently collapsing the local ecosystem.

It’s insane how crazy some things can evolve to be
Notice how she’s away from her colony too, I’m pretty sure that’s super unusual for a regular ant and the reason why the camera guy could spot her
Ants usually do that. When they start to notice they infected they try to walk as far away from the colony before the fungus takes over.
@@Epsilonsama they have the ability to do that? How? I'm interested
@@joshuasatterwhite9520 the other ants drag the infected ones away from the colony
@@_EllieLOL_ but wouldn't that infect the ants dragging them away?
@@joshuasatterwhite9520 no since the spores only appear once the fungus sprouts out of the ant
The main thing I'm wondering is how does a fungus take over an ant's mind and make it do things, like go to a place for ideal growing conditions. How would a fungus know how to put thoughts into an ant's mind?
Pyscolibin - check out psychedelics, they're all based on fungi. If fungi can change humans minds they can change ants minds
@@kw2142 Yeah I get that a fungus can affect someone's mind, but that's not the same thing as taking control of it and making it do things. Imagine a fungus that could take over a human and make him go to a specific location, then just stand there until he dies. That's what the Cordyceps does. It's just like the movie "The happening."
The last of us basically explained why the fungus controls our minds and make us act "zombie" like while also going in to dim moist spaces to produce more spores to spread.
Cause shrooms are the apex species in my opinion. Hail the shruums
Simple terms it puts chemicals in the brain but not completely shutting it off and using "mind control" to make the ant think that it should go towards a specific area then it cuts off the brain from the body and having full control only leaving the brain (this part is important) so the ant is knowing what's going on but can't do anything exactly like sleep paralysis abd the fungi does it's job and the brain finally dies
2:46 gives me a shiver through my spine 😂
I had no idea that fungus like this one even existed, until I played The Last of Us. It's scary what a certain fungus can do to insects. It's also eerie how the narrator kept reprating, "releasing more spores, infecting more ants."

Amazing how you were able to find an ant that was first infected and document it to it's death
I don’t think we appreciate how long it takes nature videographers to even get the shots.
They don't. This is 100% an ant in a controlled lab environment that they infected with the spore. It would be next to impossible to get these shots in the wild. They will often mock up a set to look like it's natural environment, infect it with the spore in a controlled lab setting, then get their shots over a long period of time as the parasite grows.
Zombie ants
Yup. That's exactly what they did. *Don't investigate any further*

A fun fact for all Last of Us fans! This real life fungus is far deadlier than even what we got in fiction, it can wipe out entire ant colonies and the only reason it doesn't is because another unknown hyperparasitic fungus castrates it and makes the range of the spread far smaller!
Another example of the saying that reality is stranger than fiction! ;)
