Starting to fair the deck structure - Episode 142 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

- Now that we have installed the short beams around the deckhouse opening, it's time to start fairing that out. These beams have all been milled a bit oversized for this purpose. This means we start by fairing the ends of the short beams down to the carlin to prepare for the sill plate and then continue fairing the rest of the deck from there.
While Alix is working on this, Steve continues to work on the Oak rootstock hanging knees that are going into Arabella. These pieces that we harvested about a year ago are turning into some beautiful structural art and we couldn't be happier about them!
As 2020 comes to a close we are all looking back on a very challenging year and all of us here at Acorn to Arabella are very thankful for the community that has grown around us and helps us to put out these videos. We sincerely hope everyone is doing well, enjoying the holidays and that these videos get to provide a bit of a distraction and enjoyment this holiday season.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Every video I'm impressed with how You guys are pushing this project forward ... at the first glance it seems slow, but if we watch a video from 12 months ago we will see massive progress. Thank YOu for sharing Your journey, many of us have a rare opportunity to learn how to push our dreams forward (slowly but every single day). You guys are awesome :)
I am a night shift ct tech at a hospital and this year my Friday night break time ritual has been watching your videos while I eat my granola bar in my car. It is my way of escaping the insanity of the hospital and I always look forward to it. I appreciate the hard work that goes into making these videos. Thank you, stay safe y’all.
Akiva, a wise old soul. Much to be learned about stopping and enjoying the view
Such a wonderful & pleasant Christmas present, a day in the shop with Steve, Alex & Akiva. Thank-you very much for sharing with all of us. God bless & good health.
5 years worth of saw dust! Has it been that long!? It feels like yesterday you were pouring the lead keel
That's exactly what my housemate said!
Five years' worth of sawdust. Five years. I admire the dedication and perseverance of you both. Merry Christmas.
Oh, and for Akiva: Good boy!
I love that such finely crafted, absolutely structural and amazingly aesthetic knees are being made from what would have ended up on ANYONE else's burn pile. Well done guys. Be well and stay safe. Finally things will start to look up after such hard times.
Those knees are not only functional they are pieces of art. Beautiful.
Merry Christmas, The boat is moving along really well and with you both working on separate tasks it is going faster. I can't wait to see the interior work.
Thank you all for another great video! I look forward the a new episode every Friday morning with my first cup of coffee. Be safe, stay healthy and above all, MERRY CHRISTMAS Arabella crew!
Just think I'm all about car's and I work with metal. One day I seen this clip about pouring a lot of lead. I was like what's this about. I would have never watched anyone build a boat. But I have watched everyone of your videos. Went back and watched all the one's I missed. Keep it up can't wait to see her in the water. Marry Christmas and many year's of calm seas. Thanks.
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you, too.
What a FAB surprise to find this lovely Christmas day Video Guys. Watching in bits as cooking The Turkey breast roast and all the trimmings. Pigs in blankets. Roast potatoes. Stuffing balls. Carrots. Roasted parsnips. Sprouts. Gravy. And anything else I forgot to mention. So here's to wishing you a merry Christmas and to all the viewers and volunteers that make this channel Rock. Thank you each and everyone of you. From Me here in the UK
Another great video. Merry Christmas to everyone on team Arabella. Thanks for allowing us to share in your passion and journey. May God keep and bless you now and in the new year. Cheers!
Merry Christmas from St Croix USVI. Finest kind work.
I hope that one day I’ll see Arabella anchoring in Christiansted Harbor next to the Schooner Roseway or Teague Bay next to the Hinkley Schooner.
Fair winds to all!
I cant believe its been 5 years! I stumbled upon you guys back then, and have been consistently following your ongoing adventures!! Time flies! and yes, I'd say looking forwards to the Friday new episodes has made 2020 a little less worrisome...I love woodworking, and are constantly amazed and inspired by seeing all the challenges and tasks you guys pursue... I am always impressed with how steadfast and committed you all are on such a wonderful project! Its all very encouraging when i pursue my much smaller scaled endeavors! HAPPY NEW YEARS !
Merry Christmas my fellow Acorn addicts. 5 years!! This all started with me watching these two crazy men make an 11 ton lead keel. When I watched these two strange men and their friends I remember thinking Why? Why would someone want to do all this work just to go sailing? I think now after 5 years I finally understand, at least in part. As I have said in past comments I don't sail. in fact, in my life I have barely boated in a modern power boat. I still don't know port from starboard, I don't know what Mizzen (sp?) mast means and from week to week none of that has ever mattered. I find that I have fallen in love with this boat. No that doesn't mean that I have some strange desire to own or build a sailing vessel. It means that I understand more now why folks like Steve want to build a boat. I have fallen in love with her and I have never touched a single part. Steve has touched and had a part in every piece or her, how much more he must love her. This series is the ONLY RUclips anything that I have never missed an episode of, trust me that is a compliment. Heres to the next year!! It has to be better than 2020. I'll be watching
Thanks for the kind words! And thanks for your support.
Merry Christmas and thank you all very much. Peace and love to you and your loved ones.
So interesting to see the difference in techniques between "Arabella" and "Talley Ho". And both are works of ART!
It was always a little satisfying to clean the shop (garage) after a furniture project and burn the dust in the pit before the finishing.
Merry Christmas to all who reads this. And everyone else.. Hope you have a great week befor new years eve too.
*"And everyone else."*
that's me, i guess.
Thank you, same goes for you. From Missouri
Best wishes from calli
Love you guys and yes, your build has been a bright spot on a stained year
Merry Christmas dudes! Lookin' very proper over there :)
Hey it's the other boat guy i follow 😂
I just started watching. I love the working platform around the hull. Plenty of dancing room for multiple workers tasking away. Light vert. band saw for fitting. I love It ! I've been watching Leo's channel. He suggested checking your project. Very nice ! ! Leo is working extra hard with disassembly added to the task. I'm only at his first year of building. I'm 69 yrs, the first I heard of baby powder for fibreglass repellent. Thank you
Steve is such a nice guy, I love the way he engages and encourages people. Gosh we need more people like this xx
Merry Christmas guys. It's been a tuff crazy year and this build has been a little spark of light in an otherwise somewhat dark year. Keep pressing on, she is looking good and many adventures await.
I can't believe I've been watching this build for that many years from the start. Wow how time flies. Enjoying every minute. I wish everyone a successful & healthy 2021.
Merry Christmas!!! Thanks for letting us follow you on this project. I believe that this year it has definitely give me a nice little break for a few minutes a week.👍
From 75 and sunny, great work.👍🤘👊🤙
Good story... I was in a boat yard in Maryland. These guys were artist like you guys, steaming planks and restoring old wood boats. One of the older wood carpenter named Buster, a WW2 paratrooper, pulled a prank on the younger guy. Samson a large golden retriever, would sleep in the woodshop and of course drop a load of dog poop each night. Buster would arrive early each morning and move the fresh pile to wherever the younger guy was working. It went on for weeks and each morning the young carpenter would whine about the dog not liking him because no matter where he worked the dog would relocate to drop a load. I really miss the place. Thanks for all you do and hope you all have a nice holiday.
Thank you so much to everyone involved in bringing Acorn to Arabella to us each week. It brings such a feeling of delight and anticipation every time I see a new video posted. Particularly in this last year, these wonderful videos have been an amazing escape from the craziness of the world. Everything from the shooting and editing to the music and narration is done to such a high standard, it seems effortless to the viewer, but I know how much work must really go into this.. Have a relaxing holiday season, and may the New Year bring us a more hopeful and happier world!
Best wishes to all of you at Team Arabella - and thanks. I look forward to next years progress.
I live in Australia and I have been a subscriber since the start of this project. I am constantly amazed at the precision of the work and how Arabella is becoming a beautiful boat. I watch Akiva and often wonder what piques his interest when he seems to be fitted on something. The worldwide interest that this project has created shows that people from anywhere are enthralled by the efforts of yourself and Alix as we watch a dream come to fruition. I want to wish you both and your families, friends helpers and supporters the very best for Christmas and hopes for a great New Year. Blessings to all.
Happy Christmas to all boat people on land or sea and to all who love them.💖
Well said Eleanor!
Merry Christmas Ben, Alix and Steve. This series has certainly been one of the normalities of life this year. The vids are great, keep on keeping on.
Its funny I used to think its taking a long time to build Arabella but recently realized just how much work has been done and left to do every inch of her has been crafted from raw goods to finished product and mostly by hand tooling. Gives you a sense of pride im sure to know and say that under that plank or behind that screw or that piece right there was from the second stump from the third tree of the forth plank on the starboard side that came from our property. That is something only few if any can ever say. Thanks for sharing your work and inspiring everyone to just try and something you can be proud of will always come out of it in the end, weather its a stud for a wall or in your case a sail ⛵
You guys are awesome beyond words. But I will try. You embody those qualities that make people proud of other human beings. In this project is passion, persistence, and community. You have plainly expressed only intolerance of hateful intolerance itself. Much love to you, your families, and may your joy find new horizons to sail toward.
Thank you for letting us come along while you build your boat , Merry Christmas to all
I appreciate the hard work that you all put in to takes on this wonderful journey of a wooden boat! Cheers and Merry Christmas!

Every piece of lumber is a job to custom fit for its final placement and has to be selected to meet the job. Remarkable to see. Thank You
Merry Christmas! It has been a great year of A2A. Next year is going to be even more amazing as the boat hull gets a lot more complete!
Merry Christmas to the Arabella crew and all the Friday faithful!
I enjoyed the piano music on this episode, it had a rhythmic, energetic quality that went well with all of the planing.
Yesterday at this time there was nothing but green grass. Now, 8" of snow blankets the town. This is what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown!
Merry Christmas, Stephen, Alix and Ben and of course to all of your families!
Don't forget Akiva
Thanks for the entertaining and educational diversion from this odd wold we’re living. Happy Christmas & Happy New Year. I enjoyed seeing more of Akiva. He’s a handsome fellow.
Merry Christmas to you guys. Really didn't expect a new episode this morning so that was a nice surprise.
I’ve been watching Leo from the start but I just found you guys and because of COVID and the holidays I’ve binge watched all your episodes 😂. Awesome series! Happy Holidays and great work! ✌🏻
Not sure what is better: coming in late and binge watching or enjoying looking forward to the next episode.....
This channel, like the boat, is a work of art.
Excellent Project y'all Your work has helped our family cope in very positive ways! A day in the shop working thru our priorities takes another step toward a better tomorrow.
I'm sitting here in my snowy woods, enjoying my recliner, and watching the latest from AtoA while wearing my brand new long-sleeve AtoA t-shirt. Merry Christmas fellows.
Following along with the Arabella crew has been a great experience . Watching every board and the care that goes into building a fine wooden sailboat , and almost feeling like watching friends doing something amazing . Merry Christmas and have a safe , healthy New Year from San Diego , ca

Glad to be there for you, Jim, and glad you’re staying safe. Thank you so much for watching and supporting.
I have learnt one thing building a wooden boat has a lot of intricate work down to part of a millimetre. What ever you do effects something along the line, forplanning essential. Thank you for this insight, I enjoy the tripe video for video.
Thank you for the great content this year. I appreciate all you and your staff's hard work on this project. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas guys. Been following you for years - I’m in it for the long haul. 18 years in ocean tugs and loving the story of Acorns to Arabella.

And remember, plywood only holds molten lead in only for so long. Looking forward to another year of A2A!
Merry Christmas Gentlemen and Akiva! Yes your weekly video has brought me a little Pease in this year of uncertainty. The shape of the giant knees remind me of the shape of brontosaurus 🥩 steaks from the “Flintstones”!
"Glorious", and "Fiddley"... veiled references to Mads at Sail Life, perhaps???
Merry Christmas fellas!!
Super Spiffy
All that saw dust was worrying me, glad you are dealing with it. I look forward to every video. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas and thank you for some sort of normalcy in this year of deceitful change!!
