White Oak Rootstock Knees - Episode 141 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

- Опубликовано: 17 дек 2020
- Last year, at about this time of year as well, some blood, sweat and maybe tears were shed in retrieving some large White Oak rootstock from the woods and painstakingly carving out some knees from them. This was a miserable yet rewarding experience that is now paying dividends.
Steve is finally getting to the fruits of his labor and getting to instal some beautiful White Oak knees in Arabella, and boy are they beautiful!
Thank you all for watching and supporting!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

So nice that Akiva let's you built a boat in his dog-house. ;-)
It is also nice from these humans to help Akiva build his boat!
I just love it when Steve patiently explains why Arabella is going to be strong enough. These guys are building an icebreaker!
Every Friday for 3+ years and I still love this. Good work guys.
Bruce, I am with you in this sentiment! I look forward to Friday morning so much! It signals the weekend, peaks my ideas for the weekend warrior projects I have lined up, and instills a sense that humanity is okay with all of the support for kind hearted people like Alix and Steve.
The rootstock turned out beautifully. I love that none of the material goes unused. The planning and forethought of a craftsman. Nice work guys.
Boat Projects (and some house projects) have an "optical illusion" about them. At different times, they appear larger than they are and sometimes, they appear smaller. When starting out the keel and frames make the project seem huge. Then when putting in the deck structure, the project seems to get smaller. Then the planking goes on and the project gets huge again. I suspect you'll see that when the bullwarks and deck planking goes on you feel it get even bigger. Then when the cabin goes on, it will shrink again and you'll wonder how all the equipment and cabinetry will fit.
There will be days when it seems insurmountable. One day you'll be steering it one-handed. Enjoy your times; they're all special. --SV Telos
Just when you think to yourself, "That's quite a big chisel", out pops an even bigger one!
Love the hard work and soul you folk put into both the boat and the filming. Heartily appreciated!
I said out loud "that's a f*cking HUGE chisel!" - my partner was rather amused...
I remember the hard work you guys put into cutting those stumps up, the results though, are beautiful!
Just got in the mail from these guys, a t-shirt, sticker's, a pin, and a personal letter from Alex, just loved that much. You guys are awesome been a fan for a long time. Thank you so much, God bless 🙏
It’s SOOOOOO good to see Steve back in the boathouse.
Welcome back, until your next mini-vacation.
With the deck beams installed, it's really starting to look like a boat now. Great progress!
Arabella is looking truly beautiful, thank you so much for letting us see this process and witness this amazing ship come together
Also give Akiva some pats for me!
Aye aye, Wesley! Thanks for the kind words. Will deliver the pats.
I never get bored watching Steven and Alex work on the boat. Steven’s enthusiasm seems to be endless. I hope y’all keep producing a weekly episode even after it’s in the water.
That's the plan! It's why we're covering some of our adventures around and about outside the shop, too. This is just the beginning.
It's coming on in leaps and bounds now lads. It's good to see you both back in the boathouse working together again the deck structure is looking really great, and yes Steve if I had put that lot together I would be happy looking up at it whilst in my bunk moored on a jetty on some tropical island lol
11:58: We were once re-assembling an old (as in, 1916) fire engine and one of my friends was supporting the clutch while we bolted it in.
We then realised that he was completely trapped, his legs simply didn't have enough knees to allow him to extract himself. We had to take it all back apart again.
oops...
Really nice to see how the knees out of those old stumps turned out. Some real gems hidden beneath all that grime.
Dang! She is really taking shape now that the deck beams are in... Once hella solid piece of art you have there guys!
Really coming together, can get a much better idea of how she actually looks... and she's just stunning!
This will be a forever memory for Stephen and Alix.
“Arabella’s hanging knees, “ will surely surplant the saying “the bees knees” in naval circles. I will never see tree stumps the same way. Who knew there was such power, beauty, purpose and strength stored in them. Thank you to Alex and Steve for opening my eyes. Oh yah, and a big happy Christmas to you all in the boat house!!!
7:38 to 7:43 I like how the dog just walks though oblivious to what's going on. "Outta here dude!"
Watching these two sync together as they work is a pleasure and it's been a long time coming. The fact that Aaron is back on deck is icing on the cake. Happy Holidays all, :)
Watched a lot of boat builds but this one is special
I would have to say....It is amazing how much you guys get done when both of you are together!
FYI I’ve been working in the Electric motor business for 35 years. I tell people I used to get in trouble for taking things apart now I get paid for it. I don’t have the head for numbers so engineering was out but if that neighbors kid enjoys working on electric motors, we have some in the shop you can walk in, it’s a great career. I can move anywhere in the country my current location I was hired sight unseen. Thanks for helping the kid out.
Beautiful workmanship
That editing trick where Akiva just wanders through with Steve racing away.
yeah....I was seeing that as well ....kinda freaky
7:35 is the marker
@@albertsandberg I missed that originally, thanks
Those knees from the white oak roots are beautiful! I appreciate how you guys figure out ahead of time what and how you're going to do something and then follow through, ending up with something functional and absolutely breathtaking. That grain in the knees with varnish is something. And that video shot down the center of the boat showing all the frames and deck beams--a thing of beauty.
The use of curve grain stumps is poetry in wood. Nice save on what could have been firewood for the long wet winter.
Looks like all the work to get those Rootstock Knees paid off. They look amazing in the boat.
It's becoming an icebreaker. Beautiful.
I LOVE the rootstock! The tight curves in the grain are so beautiful. I can see the strength in them.
A lot of progress. Two guys working means lots of interesting content.
I like how the "not much to look at" section in the stem behind the Sampson post is pretty damn gorgeous
When we used to frame houses I always hated when they covered it up with sheetrock. All the raw joinery in the boat is beautiful to look at, no need to dress it up in my opinion besides protecting the wood itself.
Keep inserting Akiva clips! Will never get bored of these!
Aaron watching Steve making more sawdust, “Yes, job security!”.
It’s truly amazing to see it come together like some kind of organic sculpture formed by your will and bare hands. It’s a wonder to watch.
You are both very skilled craftsman. I’m amazed Alix at your development over the last couple of years, just amazing. You gents have a wonderful Christmas and just try to stay out of the boathouse for one day. I must say, now as an old crippled gent, that my mind comes alive watching your videos. I thank you both from the bottom of my heart. Merry Christmas and be sure to be with those who are important to you.
Thank you very much for the kind words, Craig.
The grain in those knees is incredible and so beautiful when enhanced with the varnish.
The more you build the bigger it looks. Beautiful work. 👍
What a beautiful young lady she is becoming. I live to see her launched.
So satisfying to see those oak knees, and to imagine the acorn taking root on family land. Meaning is in the narrative.
Hi Guy's
I look forward to you're new posting every week and really can't wait for Friday
and now you can see the shape of Arabella coming together
the roots you spent so much time in digging out and working on has been more that worth it
and now I have chisel envy
I learned something new today. Turns out they do make that combination snow shovel/chisel I have always wanted.
I look forward each week to the progress you are making. As an "OLD" guy who cannot do woodworking any more (built furniture) I am living vicariously through the building that you are doing.
So glad you're here along with us, Marc. Thank you.
Always look forward to these awesome videos every friday! Great to see so much progress over the past couple of years and looking forward to seeing the boat continue to develop :)
Wow! Those oak stumps turned out beautiful. It's a real shame that they are going to be hidden kind of. Great workmanship in cutting those knees out too.
1:23 Of course we (I at least) are enjoying the videos. I'm late this week, but still excited to see a new one. Greetings from Cape Town (actually Somerset West, a small town 50km from CT), South Africa! Something to look forward to every week during our second wave Corona partial lockdown...
Wow so much work packed into a 27 minute video. It was awesome. Well done on the editing Ben. Awesome job to Stephen and Alix as well. Arabella is looking sooooo sweet right now. The grain on those knees as well as the rest of the boat is awesome. Thanks for sharing and I am eagerly looking forward to next weeks video!
Nice to hear jets back in the air.
Man, I just nipped the tip of my thumb off with a router. When you cut with the bandsaw in fast motion, it gives me the heebie-jeebies.
I became an electrical engineer because I grew up taking apart motors and electronics. It's a fascinating field to be in!
Inspiring, Jonathan. Thanks for sharing and watching.
Auto Like enabled. God i cant get enough of this and Leo's project
One more great episode Thanks. Stay well.
Hard to believe a root can look so good
Wow, lying at anchor in the back of beyond looking up at fantastic workmanship taken out of the earth near your home,, MAGIC
You have nailed it
Wish I was as wise when I was your age
Sean from Ireland
Great end of a day's Xmas Shopping with wife...Merry Christmas...rr Normandy, France
Just catching up with the videos after some busy weeks. Nice to have Alix back, didn't realise how much I missed him. (You look great and well rested Alix, if you read this). I admire the freshly varnished wood, when the grain comes out fully... Arabella is a beauty.
Merry Christmas guys, great seeing your progress, happy days!
Same to you!
....most visible change in one video yet...good workmanship too....
All the converging lines at 6:55 are beautiful!
Beautiful work guys
Looking so great!!
I’m just imagining how like this is to Tally Ho, looks amazing seeing the structure come together
Thanks for posting and sharing. Carlins look great.
Excellent guys. Another absolutely riveting show. Thank you
WE SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE.
@@AcornToArabella We all saw what you did too!
Ahhh...shipbuilding again! Worth the wait!
It's so cool to be lazy to nice music while you work your tails off...lol. Another interesting video of really professional workmanship. I'm so absorbed by the fine details. Arabella is looking graceful and fair.
You are both doing simply wonderful work.
Amazing work guys, progress is great. Especially considering there’s only two guys working. The white oak knees are a thing of beauty. Editing was great Ben.
It's obvious that Ben enjoys editing these. At 7:35 he cut Akiva out of the timelapse just because he could.
willi wildenhain I didn't even notice that until i read your comment.
Some different views at the end really show how much progress has been made. Everything looks great.
Damn that figuring on the wood is gorgeous!
what a pleasure to watch the old rootstocks evolve into the backbone of the ship.
MASSIVE bit of wisdom there, thanks Steve. 'If you are in law enforcement then engage with the community'.
All to often the only contact with the police is when they come round and cause problems. The visited person will probably be a wrongdoer but the community only sees the police hassling one of their members. So trust is lost and the police often become hated. But we all want to the same and the police are doing their job of keeping us safe. So, if you are a law enforcement officer, then meet with & become part of that community.
Get the trust & appreciation of the public at large and you may well find that people who previously made your job awkward may actually become keen help you do it. 'Then & Us' is destructive thinking, while 'We are all part of the same community, just doing our bit' achieve great things.
The meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship is amazing. This boat will be almost be too beautiful to sail!!!
A boat must be beautiful...to sail properly...;o)
All the attention to detail will keep you alive when the waves get bad.
I love love all the videos, I look forward to every Friday night in the UK too watch just before I go to bed. Great job guys. Love from England 👍👍❤️❤️
Thanks for your concern for your followers. I'm looking over the edge, personally. Keep at it boys, I'm counting on living long enough to see her splash. It's gonna be nip n tuck.
You young men are doing a fine job on Arabella ,looks very nice job 👍 god bless
Those oak knees look beautiful , nice work as always
I wish your viewers could smell the wood. It must be amazing. Merry Christmas!
We were promised smell-o-vision in the old cartoons, were we not? What's up, RUclips.
Alix with the Spider-Man leg catch!
I love the immediate cutting of the scrap cut offs into firewood sized chucks while the bandsaw is right there and running. Good idea to avoid another giant pile to work through.
Still would love to have a bit of Arabella as a nymph before she soars on swells...
Beautiful work by a couple of skilled Craftsmen. Enjoy your videos.
Nice editing at 7:38, I had to watch again to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me
1:22 - I'm doing very well, thank you. :) I appreciate you thinking of us and am glad you are doing well too.
Got my shirt the other day and I love it.
We're so glad! Thanks for the support, it really makes a difference.
I for one enjoy your channel and I'm looking forward to after your done going back and binge watching from start to finish of the build so I can see it in a couple weeks , instead of a few years
like the dogs guard post.definitely looks to be doing a good job
She's looking stouter every episode. I love the way you're combining function and beauty. You've come a long way from the raw milling of the lumber!
Amazing work guys!! Happy Holidays from the TotalBoat fam!
Happy holidays to you, too. We're grateful for the team at Total Boat!
SHE LOOKS BEAUTIFUL GREAT WORK REALLY GREAT WORK
Morning guys, hope inspite of all the work holiday time is shaping up to be a good one.
Nice to see things are picking up with the boat.
Be safe,be good and take care.
Nice composite time lapse/real time shot with Akiva and pattern making. Somebody's having fun in post.
The beauty of the finished knees would be a motivator for me. Absolutely gorgeous!
Those knees look great. Sure to be plenty strong
G'day Crew.
Great episode ,
She looks magnificent,
With knees like that ,theres now wonder so many old seafarers had a wooden leg . Id even take one of those knees over my motorcycling knee.
Safe n Happy Christmas guys .
Much Respect

Caught up with you: good. Have to wait a week between episodes: not so good! Loving all the drama and comedy and suspense.
It's going to be just as rewarding to lay in bed and look ay all that work you've done as it will be to sail her toward the horizon. She'll be beautiful inside and out! Akiva approved without a doubt. Your videos are the best part of my Friday mornings...except of course coffee. Be safe, stay healthy and MERRY CHRISMAS Arabella crew!
Cheers, and same to you. Thanks so much for watching and happy new year!
Coming - looking good!
Gorgeous, finished knees.
And "desawdusting". I like it. I can relate to the need, but on a far smaller scale.
"I was worried that the breasthook wasn't strong enough" hahaha! The boat that broke the rock!
Never challenge fate, Erik!
@@horatiohornblower868 Mate, in his book sailboats to buy or build” refers to the Spencer as such a vessel.
Great video. Thank you so much.
