touchland hand sanitizers caught my eye in the travel minis aisle of target because I always see them on TikTok. Basically everything in that section is under $5 and I literally gasped when I saw they were $10! Nah, for that price, it had better cure my immunodeficiency 😂
I love my touchland sanitizer 😅 I don't use tiktok and had no idea they are trendy hand sanitizers; I just live somewhere with a lot of public transportation and as a germaphobe, am always reaching for hand sanitizer. The gel kind are really annoying and feel unpleasant to use.
@misoneism. agree with you on that last point. I hate gel sanitizers. And tbh, when I was first looking for a spray one they didn't have any (TL or otherwise) available at my target so I went somewhere else. Touchland is probably a perfectly fine hand sanitizer- the price is just a lot more than I'd spend lol
You just mentioned something I have been thinking about lately. I do not need the best of something/everything! I'm just a regular person, and regular products are perfectly acceptable.
Me too! I'm older now, but I've always managed to look good with drugstore make-up and no brand name clothing. Occasionally I splurge on good shoes or a brand name foundation. I feel sorry for young people getting bombarded by influencers promoting expensive bags, make-up and clothing! When I was young, there were no influencers, there was no internet! We went to record stores to listen to the latest song by our idols ( David Cassidy....lol) and we bought bell bottoms at the local jeans store!
Price doesn't always equate quality anyway. I have wavy-curly hair and I put quite some effort in my haircare, everyone's hair needs are different and some products that work wonders for mine are really cheap in price. once I managed to keep a whole restock under 15€ and I was pretty proud
@@AlicePRabbitsCoach does repairs and they’re relatively affordable- I’d suggest looking into it, I have coach bags from the early 90s and over their whole lifespan they’ve only needed one or two small repairs. The bag was probably not treated well by its previous owner, but stuff also just happens. Still, I think we should reward companies that make repair easy in this age of planned obsolescence.
As someone who bit the bullet and spent $250 on Bose headphones after doing a bunch of research, there are SO many headphones at different price points that do different things and have different shapes. You need to know what you’re buying them for. I wanted noise cancellation because I do a lot of work with headphones in, and AirPods are not particularly good at that even though they’re marketed as such.
I'm the same! I brought some second hand particularly for noise cancellation on flights and while I don't use them often they're still going after 5 years and I think they were worth the investment.
yes love my bose headphones, got them during black friday. i have used them everyday for 4 years now. ive had to replace the ear cushions one time so far and the replacements are doing well. worthwhile investment to me personally.
The one trendy fridge “hack” I can get behind is putting produce in the side compartments in the fridge door, and swapping the condiments that would normally go there into the crisper drawers. This has helped immensely budget-wise and to encourage healthy eating because the fruit and veggies are so visible and noticeable, no longer banished to the drawer of death and spoilage 💀 So refreshing to see this kind of content in a sea of wishlists and must haves!
@@imaginingdefeat I love that! My produce wouldn't fit in my door but that's such a cool idea. I have a plate on my counter that I stock with fruit to remind me and my family that we have it and can eat it.
@imaginingdefeat plus our fruits and veggies need to be cool not cooolllld and I like the idea of my condiments remaining in the fridge when i open the door often.
Flaired leggings in winter is a no go because the bottoms just get soaked! I spent all of high school with cold ankles because the bottom of my pants got wet on the way to school and I am not interested in doing that again.
One of my kindergarten students brought a touch land sanitizer into class and I hope her mom knows she basically flushed $10 down the toilet because that bottle didn’t last til lunch 😂😂😂😂
@TheKnallkorper lol I used to teach and I've seen kids later "hanitizer" up to the elbows like they're scrubbing in for surgery. But they're MORE LIKELY to do that, in my experience, if the hand sanitizer is special/expensive and not the basic purel!
I have never in my life seen someone use a touchland hand sanitizer out in the wild 😂 so bizzare to me that we live in a world with a "cool" hand sanitizer like why
Me either! I want to try one so bad but only because of 1 scent: Lily of the Valley. It's only cause I can't find that scent in any other. Sigh. But that's why. It's like I am almost influenced to try it.
My sister in law uses them! That’s how I found out about them, I didn’t know they were particularly popular but she did tell me they’re expensive. She was offering it up to my whole family when we were out though so now I am impressed at how generous she is 😂
I come from Eastern Europe and girls there have an attitude that reeds like “you’re less of a woman if you don’t do your nails” and “I’d rather starve than miss my manicure appointment”. I myself used to see my nail specialist on a regular basis, even did the gel nails. And then I moved to the Middle East. Here things are very different. Of course, there are women who strive for same perfectionism with their nails, but most are Muslim and it doesn’t really align with their religion to cover the nails (has to do with ablution before each prayer). I saw that these woman still carry themselves with utter grace despite having pristine (if it’s a correct word 🤭) and untouched hands and nails. Most of them just cut them and file neatly. Maybe use hand cream sometimes. Period. I just loved their attitude so much. Like, I, as a woman, am not defined by the look of my nails. For God’s sake. P.s. At the end of November I calculated my non-essential expenses and they came out 1/3 higher than my non-essentials budget. Have a lot to work on here. Thank you, Shawna. The thing you said about “it doesn’t matter how cheap this is if you cannot afford it” hit so deep.
I have but only one and it was 2-3yrs ago. It was a very specific type of lipstick with an unusual and colour and smelled/tasted of vanilla. It was a joy to use until my baby (at the time) ate it.😂
honestly the fridge containers do have a use! I'm talking just the simple bins though. I use it less for aesthetics and more for an easy way to reach and pull out the things from the back of my fridge. Helps me waste less. But no repackaging here. Ive got my dairy tray that I can pull out in order to access the milk, yogurt, sour cream, etc but they stay in their own containers!
The bin is for the backup cheese here. We have the currently opened ones on a tray next to it. I also have a couple of boxes for veggies and two egg trays/boxes (they stack). It may or may not be ”aesthetic” : the goal is practicality.
Agree, I just organized my fridge with bins and it made a huge difference in finding stuff that got buried in the back of the fridge. But repackaging stuff just to look aesthetic? No way!
I have fridge containers from, I’m going to say Family Dollar. Not the $30 ones! Yes, they’re more aesthetic than some alternatives, but I mostly use them so I can see what’s in my fridge! I have egg containers and soda can holders because keeping them in the original packaging could hide how much I have left, and if I’m just glancing in the fridge to see what I’ve got . . . Game changer for my ADHD. The rest of my containers are used to keep the small items like applesauce and pudding cups together.
I’ve got some bins for veggies and a plastic egg container. I keep the old egg cartons to start seeds and one day I’ll be getting chickens so I’ll need a container for the eggs.
I'm a chronic nailbiter and finally decided to buy a good LED/UV lamp and just do my nails at home. I was initially a bit hesitant because of the investment, but realized that it was the equivalent of 3/4 trips to the nailsalon, so even just using it 3 to 4 times a year would be worth it. I've used it every 2-3 weeks since I got it. I haven't bitten my nails in 6 months. It's so much fun and I get so many compliments! My nails have never been longer or stronger!
It's really impressive how much our French influencers are copying the Americans 🤔 for example, to my knowledge, this specific hand sanitizers are not available here in France, but some other expensive perfumed ones are advertised in place or people (often young ones) are paying tons of money just to import that one from American resellers 😅 I'm a teacher in a posh private school, all these teens bragging about importing things from the US, Korea or Japan just because they can affort it is a bit wild. And they are bragging about this sense of exclusivity to have things that we cannot find in France in shops too ! that's quite crazy how the social media tend to shape these teenagers' desires 😢 . I really blame influencers : a lot of French influencers are promoting exclusive to one foreign country things. They travel a lot and come back with these products which are otherwise not available here. By importing these products, the teenagers share a bit of this exclusivity feeling and appearance. It's sad it's becoming a way to hierarchize people and that the scholarship students who cannot afford this lifestyle are often bullied over it 😢
I'm French and I've noticed that too. And mind you, I rarely watch French influencers but I noticed it because I heard people talk like influencers and embrace the American mannerisms in the way they behave in real life 😅
@@TraXs.I only noticed that since i started to teach (like the good ol' dinosaur i'm for the teens in my classroom) 😅 like you, i'm not too much in this influencer game, but yes, it's quite astonishing 😂
THIS I'm french too and a student, I used to be in a very fancy French school ( in a foreign country but still ) and the amount of students how imported articles from the US and the UK and even Australia (nothing from Japan or Korea because thoses countries were not popular yet in bourgeois spaces) that were unavailable here and used to flex them was crazy ( especially as someone that's from a worker background lol ). The part about influencers is very true because, I myself sadly, find myself wanting articles that are unavailable here sometimes after seeing influencers show them off 😕
I‘ve seen this many times before… Many students on scholarships will make their own luck, while some „rich kids“ will still be dependent on their parents years after graduation. Paving your own way is hard, but never becoming an independent and self-determined adult is a worse fate in my eyes.
@@Scoutmhen yeah I have several double walled water bottles and they work just fine. Stanley’s are a waste of money. I have better things to spend my money on.
The AirPod maxes are part of the aesthetic. As you said, influencers have to make their life the product. AirPod maxes are just another part of the “uniform”, like the touch land sanitizer or a lululemon belt bag. Plus, they can sell you the cheap Amazon accessories to go with (the colored ear covers etc). And don’t forget, they may pay full price for them but they definitely can be considered a work expense for tax purposes.
3:40 I have enough special eyeshadows shades to tell anyone that no, makeup is not life changing. Some tools and/or products can make your life easier because they help you achieve that specific aesthetic you're looking for but calling that life-changing is a big reach 😂
Over the years I have developed the habit of thinking "what is appealing to me from this product" and that helps me either get a cheaper alternative, a reusable alternative or even talk myself out of the "buying need". For example, the touchland sanitizers are super cute but I would never but them because they are ridiculously expensive for what they are and I realized that what I personally like of them is the bottle so I got a refilable bottle in the exact same shape at the dollar store and that really made it for me.
15:41 also i am a cosmetic chemist. And perfumery is actually a very very unique science and field. The pricing has less to do with the brand pr the actual components and more to do with the amount of research that went into creating the fragrance raw material. Also fragrant compounds are usually present in lower amounts in their natural sources so you need alot of processing to get the purified compound. Not saying people should spend alot on fragrance. Zara has cheap ones with synthetic blends. But as a fragrance geek just thought id share some knowledge
Not only this but there’s a huge monopoly on who makes the purified fragrance oils. They were recently raided by Europes “Fair Trade Commission” there’s a big lawsuit going down behind closed doors over how much they charge and how they happen to be the only people working with fragrance oils.
@@lspbeautea4791 yeeees definitely same and vintage y2k there's a few more words I can't remember atm. I'm so over them like several years ago. Love your video I honestly just purchase what I like need want because I influenced myself. I'll definitely thrift first if no luck then store hunting for a good quality dupe! Really don't care about labels brands trends too old for that hahaa. As long as it's what I'm looking for and made with great quality I'm getting it when I'm able to put it in my budget of course. It takes years to understand how to correctly budget and still get your wants verses needs. I did me.
The water and salt stain problem is why I almost never wear my Bearpaw boots. I got them at Ross so they were not pricey, but still, I have to remind myself not to get things I will be afraid to actually wear/use.
There are very good spray protectors available, for suede and leather footwear. I live in Canada, and I spray my shoes and boots every few weeks during winter. Salt stains are no longer a problem!
I know the brand sprays ever pair of bearpaws with a protectant. But I’ve seen it fail. I work with a company that sells the brand and they do demos with the boots and pour water/mud water on them and sometimes the protectant doesn’t cover every inch of the boot and it starts to get stained. But from what I’ve seen when it does work and is covered fully, it works pretty well to repel water and mud.
@@roxycockseyI always do my own sealant on bear paw boots when I get them. Salt stains do suck, but a little suede brush seems to help if it’s a darker color.
I got Got by influencers on the Ninja Creami. I bought it and at first I loved it, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to clean! I wish I had read the reviews before impulse buying it at Sam’s Club. Lesson learned!
For perfumes one of the biggest things for me is how it wears through the day. I always see ads for different perfumes and I’ve been so tempted but unless I get a sample (which can sometimes still be expensive) or try it on in the store and then walk around all day I just wont know if its worth my money.
Samples used to be free at any time at the counter, you just had to ask. Then they moved it to black friday and easter shopping weeks, they were handed out. I'm old but I refuse to pay for a sample, and the prices they now want for samples is outrageous. I don't know why pplmput up with it.
I agree. I need the scent to linger more than a couple hours. Valentino Born In Roma did not stick to me for more than 2 hours, I had to keep reapplying. Not with the money to more. So far, Gucci and Lancôme have been the strongest and longest of scents!
My most expensive water vessel was included in the room rate at the local hospital. Great double walled plastic oversized mug with lid, straw, and volume graduations on the wall. Mug and surgical scar = great memory.
Yes I agree on the containers. I can only understand the use of them if you squeeze your own juice, make your own milk or anything like that but taking it out of the bottle it is to just put in another one is wasteful
And dangerous (? Not sure if that’s the right word.) How would people tell when the whatever is spoiled? Especially like sour cream or something where it has kind of a smell by default so I wouldn’t trust the smell test.
Yeah . . . Now, I re-contain a lot of my dry goods, like pasta and rice. But that’s as much to make it easier for me to organize my pantry and to be able to tell at a glance how much of any one product I have on hand at a glance. Anything liquid (sauce, etc) stays in its original container till it’s used.
For Birkenstocks, I remember thinking they were the shoe that would "fix my closet" like I was going through a clothing crisis buying anything that I thought would make it make sense. SURELY Birkenstocks would be what I'm really missing. I made myself try to build outfits specifically to wear the Birks with for a week before buying them. Turns out I couldn't. Nothing I owned would look good with them. So I didn't buy them! Years later, I tried them on in a store just to see if I would've liked them, turns out I hate the archbed. Those shoes are pure evil to my feet. Two reality checks with one item. 😂
Honestly, I love that you have natural nails. It makes me feel a little better about my normal nails too. I have extremely brittle nails because I was a compulsive nail biter as a child and ruined my nail beds. So I can’t do anything to my nails (no polish, no stick ons, no acrylics). I have to keep them really short or else they break even just living my normal life. All the Influencer girlies and now all the InfluencED girlies in my regular life were starting to get to me and make me feel bad about my nails and hands. So it’s nice to see someone down to earth rocking mostly natural nails
I feel your nail pain! I also have brittle nails that crack easily, it can be really painful. I've found that a good hand cream can help alleviate discomfort - my favorite is Neutrogena Norwegian formula. Usually fragrance free and around $5, lasts all winter.
The only reason I don't get manicures is because I hate the way having longer nails feels to me. It makes it so much harder to type - not to mention the fact that I'm so clumsy, any time I get it into my head to start letting mine grow a little bit, I inevitably end up scratching myself with them...I've lost count of the number of times I've nearly taken my own eye out. (And don't even get me started on causing a run in my stockings!) Keeping them short, filed neatly and then if I want to, given a couple of coats of whatever colour takes my fancy is nice and easy. Plus it's also easy to take off. I've often wondered about people who always have gel or shellac nails done, what happens if they need emergency surgery? If you're going under a general anaesthetic you're supposed to remove all traces of nail polish so that it doesn't obscure the onset of cyanosis. It's one of the things anaesthetists look out for whilst you're under. So, to have a welded on, weirdly solid nail that can't just be swiped off with a bit of nail polish remover...how do they get around that? As for you feeling bad about your own nails, there's probably very few people looking at them. People look at other people's nails usually because they're strikingly bright, dark or dramatic in some way. It's the work done on them that catches another person's eyes. I can't remember the last time anyone's non tarted-up nails stood out to me enough for me to notice or think twice about it. And just because it's NFTI (Normal For The Internet) doesn't mean that's how the majority of the world thinks or behaves. The way things are going with manicures and whatnot now, means we're probably due a "nude nails" renaissance. Once things go from niche to fashionable to accessible to the common people, it often loses a lot of desirability in those who are higher earning, trend setting, fashionista types. Sooner or later everything rolls around again, so you can be sure that whether it's your nails or your hair, your body type or your make-up, your heels or your sneakers, or even not being seen to be spending money on trends at all, you'll be fashionable at multiple points in your life without even trying. (I'm 44 and have seen so many things come and go over time, I'm at the point where I'm convinced there is nothing new under the sun!)
Colourpop, elf, and other drugstore-level brands are often just as good as the high-end stuff when it comes to makeup, basic skincare and hair care. I ONLY go high-end now if I have exhausted my drugstore options or can't find something that works. Also, regarding the fridge aesthetics, as long as your fridge is clean and you can find what you need, anything beyond that level of function is just unnecessary.
I’ve heard that the Black Friday deals weren’t much this year anyway. A lot of things were found to be barely lowered prices or even higher than usual with false original prices.
I own the Ugg Classic Patchwork fluff boots (if you look them up, they're camel colored, with pink and white fluff and faux fur). I'm not sure how old they are but my guess is probably older than 5 years. I remember seeing them and absolute falling in love with the unique design. I got them for my birthday, gifted by my family. I use them in the house and when I'm going to short trips outside the house when it's winter or nighttime (like when I forgot something from the store). I would never recommend them for anything other than that because they have no support whatsoever. But by God are they comfy, it feels like you're wearing a sheep on each foot. However, they're the first Uggs I've ever owned, and I'm 31, and they have been with me for 5 years already... if they would give, I'd probably not purchase a new pair either. It's just that I was really in love with that specific pair.
@@shawnaripari I really like them still, but like I said they really are specific occasion shoes... And so I understand most people don't feel like it's worth that price point, especially if you live someplace where if snows a ton (like you!).. Me as a 31 year old would probably tell my younger self that it's a super unnecessary and extra item to ask for 🤣
like 12-15 years ago i had a pair of ugg knock-offs as slippers for the really cold days (we try not to heat our apartment too much when not necessary bc we have to use space heaters which make the bills get crazy) and omg they were so comfy. if I had them now I'd probably put a supportive insole in or something, but I've definitely been thinking about getting myself a pair of knock-off uggs again. I wouldn't buy the real thing even though I'm sure it's higher quality than most replicas because no one would ever see them lmao, and the replicas have enough of that fuzzy comfy feeling to be good warm slippers in the house
I created some drawer and frig organizers from old pyrex-like glass storage containers that lost their lids. They work great and look nice. I also follow a great online chef who removes the labels from pickle and pasta jars, etc. to store leftovers or kitchen essentials. Free upcycling and also better for the environment.
Regarding makeup. I've bought expensive makeup and very cheap makeup as well as "drugstore" makeup. What I've found after a number of years is that the "drugstore" makeup is the most reliable, is easiest to work with, lasts the longest, and gives me more bang for my buck. I've done little experiments with high end makeup and drugstore makeup, applying them side by side. Lo and behold! The drugstore makeup looked just the same (or better) and performed the same way as the expensive stuff. To me any of that high end makeup is just a scam and I won't buy any of it.
What doesn’t make sense about the touch is like you said at bath and body works you can get multiple for the same price, but with bath and body work they also have scents and holders that look or smell really nice and are in much smaller but with a good amount of product it fits better for everyday use.
I love painting my nails and trying different color combinations ❤ I also get to decide when to do it and when take it off instead of waiting for an appointment
Uggs annoy me so much. They always have. In my neck of the woods you also need waterproofing on boots or something that holds up in salt conditions! Uggs are so impractical for the price. It kills me.
I loved how you talked about nails. I recognized the value I get from them. I wear them for 5-6 weeks and enjoy all this time. I look at them and feel good.
@@diethylmalonate@diethylmalonate I don't know why anyone pays for high-end audio when Sennheiser is exactly the same quality or better for like, a third of the price?
Shawna thank you!! Your content has helped me be so discerning. I went into Uniqlo yesterday and I used to get the urge to purchase something just for fun (unplanned) and yesterday I felt no desire to do that and no compulsion about it either. I looked at some socks and checked out some bras but I don’t need either of those items right now and am proud to say I walked out empty handed. Thank you for your hard work! I know sometimes I’m in the comments disagreeing with you or adding another perspective but overall I agree with your content and love how rigorous and prolific you are! 💕💕💕
An influencer cannot convince me to buy anything scented (I have horrible allergies), cool-toned (I’m a warm colour season), oversized (does NOT suit me), high maintenance (acrylic nails, etc.), designer (not in the budget and not worth it), or anything they create (a book, makeup collab, etc.). Basically, I’m a tough customer and super picky. 😂
lol I actually just bought a new bottle of a replica perfume, but I totally get why it's not for you! I'm very, VERY picky about scents to the point that most perfumes make me gag, and I also use it so sparingly that it took me two years to go through my 2ml tester, so I expect this small bottle to last me several years as long as I store it properly. I would absolutely never spring for buying a perfume this expensive without having known that I've loved it for two entire years, perfumes are so individual to every person and buying without trying is like asking for a headache.
$10 hand sanitizers are crazy. That's some people's hourly pay. Lip balms & glosses, they're all mostly sheerer & shiny, and don't last more than 2h on the lips, but cost $25-40? A big pet peeve of mine is influencers calling something affordable, a steal that they themselves got in pr or bought for content to make more money off it. Yes honey, it's a steal for YOU, because you'll make more money off it and write it off as a business expense after you're done. They also push EVERY sale, "run, don't walk, xyz is 10% off", 10% lmao. "Hi bestie, use my code for 5% off all orders over $50", like what? I hate when they call their viewers "bestie", call themselves "big sister" while selling something, exploiting the parasocial connection they've slowly built to their viewers.
I do honestly love my airpod max. I really love the sound quality, I wear them for hours a day at work for computer and at home, in my apartment where I use it with the tv…so good to me
Some items influencers will never succeed in getting me to buy: - A Stanley cup - Sol De Jeneiro (Any product) - Uggs (Any) - Those shower scrubs - Any designer makeup (Prada, Chanel, Dior lip oil, etc.) - Hair tools (Airwrap, etc.) - Skims or anything Kardashian related - Any kitchen tool that only has one specific niche use
how funny, my uggs from high school are still in perfect condition...bc i grew up in a suburb and never walked anywhere. so salt from the roads wasn't a problem. i do want the new ones but i just balk at buying from an unethical company new. i would consider getting them secondhand though
I love watching you videos as I agree 100% with you. That being said, I will often watch these types of videos to see new products, especially storage ideas. They show how they are used, area they can go, what products fit, etc. but I never buy from their posts.
I totally agree with what you’re saying about the fragrances, it’s something that should be based on personal taste/preference and not on trends! (especially if it’s a more expensive one) Did just want to point out that Phlur isn’t actually that different from Replica price wise. The $38 price point is for Phlur’s body mists, which don’t have the lasting power of an eau de toilette or eau de parfum. A full size eau de parfum from Phlur is $99USD for 50mL (~$2USD/mL), and a full size eau de toilette from Replica is $165USD for 100mL ($1.65USD/mL). They can both be worth it for their more unique scents, but only if it’s something someone loves and knows they’ll use. Fragrances are never worth blind buying based on hype! Tom Ford is def not worth it though lol
I make perfume for a living and while there is a lot of skill involved, I agree that scent is SO subjective. Influencers trying to peddle fragrances as universal bugs me so bad. When I'm vending in person, I encourage potential customers to try on any scents they think they might like and walk around with them for a few minutes; let them dry down and give all the notes an opportunity to shine so they can be sure.
I love touchland sanitizers. I travel a lot and these fit great into your purse and they last FOREVER. A regular little hand sanitizer doesn’t last at all. Touch land lasts for months! I love my cashew Armani tint. I feel like you are coming for me. lol.
When you said Tom Ford and Replica I immediately felt called out bc I have fragrances from both 😭 I have the smallest sizes so they’re less than what you said, but I honestly am in love with them and have 3 fragrances currently that I love to layer or rotate between and I use them very sparingly so they last months or years even….they were definitely special treat purchases that I took a really long time to settle on since i’m very picky about fragrances
Remember that if it's a considered purchase, that's not what she's talking about! I have one Replica that I spotted in a store (I was looking to replace a different fragrance I'd finished), specifically came back to take the time to try it before buying it, then took the plunge after a week or two of cool off. It was only after I bought it that I saw influencers were into it! It's the only fragrance I own and it'll stay that way until it's finished in a few years time :)
I’ve found myself just always coming back to your videos!! I love the calmness to you and appreciate the points you bring across. Thank you for putting out these videos ❤
i love spray hand sanitizers for the ease of use, so when i saw those touchland ones being promoted i was initially glad that other people got on board with that too- but like most of these other commenters, i saw them being 10 DOLLARS among target minis and was astonished. i need influencers to know that bath and body works does sales every single day and that they can get a wonderful smelling (and cute!!) spray for $2 or $3
I love doing my nails at home with regular polish. It's a big hobby of mine and I've been using the same polishes for years at this point. The only time I have to buy stuff is if I run out of top coat or remover. I can't FATHOM how people spend money every few weeks on manicures when doing it yourself is so much cheaper and also fun????
Exactly!! About once a month I make a seasonally themed intricate nail set for myself and the money i’ve spent on all my supplies and charms since I started in june is like…..maybe $20 total?? maybe slightly more?? there’s multiple months where I didn’t even buy new supplies! And they stay glued to my nails for like 3 weeks, I could never go to a salon now
I honestly went through a phase of being so influenced between 2015-2017ish by influencers. I slowly unfollowed influencers throughout the years cause it became too much buy buy buy and I was tired of it. Now I literally can’t be influenced lol
The item 6, perfumes, is why Scent Bird sponsorships annoy me SO MUCH. Like, I really don't care what other people think of a perfume because we all have different tastes, our noses pick up on different scents, and just listing the notes on a bottle isn't going to tell us how much of what scent it's going to be.
airpod dupes are often just as good as the real thing! I got a pair from the drugstore for ten dollars, and they work the same as my brother's pair of the real ones. I agree, I don't understand spending a lot of money on specially branded headphones/earphones.
I found your channel recently and it’s been such a breath of fresh air. You are so classy and your videos are so calming in their simplicity. Thank you for being an inspiring voice of reason in a world of noise and overconsumption! 🩷
Oh, doing my own acrylic nails is my hobby. I’m obsessed with doing them and will likely make it a side job at some point in the future - saving up for nail school is one of my reasons for cutting back on unnecessary spending.
I'll admit I fell for the influencer marketing with the touchland hand sanitizer. I only bought one and I still have it a year and a half later because I forget about it. But you are correct, it's dumb. I can't believe I spent $10 on a stupid hand sanitizer. I have plenty of other hand sanitizers that I use more often. And most of them were free. One thing I'm glad I did not fall for is the refrigeration organization stuff. I absolutely love the aesthetics of it but I've never bought any thankfully. And I will survive the rest of my life without any of it.
27:16 I have a suspicion that anyone who uses their hands online is able to write off their manicures as a business expense. I do get my nails done once a month and I get high quality gel polish (my manicurist is very particular about quality) because if I don’t have the protective coating on and don’t have a manicure monthly, I will pick and bite and scratch my nails and the skin around them, so for me it’s a hygiene thing at this point. I used to get fake extensions and they destroyed my nail health - since doing the good quality polish and professional manicure every time (I didn’t always get a manicure when I got extensions) I do really notice a difference. That’s the one thing I allow myself in terms of body services 😅
You're spot on about that hand sanitizer! Seeing the cost and the amount of volume they selling, it opened my eyes how ridiculous its getting. I'm on strike against influencers. Common sense and affordability should come first. I ask questions now before just believing it. Besides, We don't know after making the videos they just return it.
3:17 So Patrick Ta has lost his mind, but this is okay 😂 I can't imagine spending that much for a liquid eyeshadow that will dry out so quickly. For that price, you can have several small Viseart palettes or one (maybe two depending on the brand) solid indie eyeshadow palettes so this isn't even something I would ever consider being tempted to buy 😂
It's funny you mention not being a style inspo, because every other video you do I'm admiring your cozy, nice looking sweaters because I CANNOT find sweaters worth their price anymore (and buying used on reseller sites and thrift stores is getting so hard because everyone is doing it now and snatching up all of the good stuff 😭)
I think what influencers tend to push over manicures and more permanently attached nails are press-on nails. I could be convinced to buy some of those for an occasion, but I've seen the damage more permanent nails can do and my nails are weak little things already. 🥺 Even the thought of wearing press-ons on a regular basis makes me nervous.
i think buying cute little harmless things that can make the use of daily items a little more... whimsical. it adds a little bit of fun and needed pleasantness in daily life. but those items should meet certain criteria: is it worth the price for you specifically? will you get good use of it? is it good quality? does it really make you happy, or is it an impulse buy because of something like retail therapy? for example: getting your nails done constantly is VERY WORTH IT for people with nail biting/picking problems. having pretty nails stops people from biting and picking, their skin heals, their nails end up in a healthy spot, and stops the bad habit!
As someone who used to be a perfume influencer…… buying any more than 3 perfumes is not worth it. I find myself reaching for my cheaper perfumes more than I ever reached for my expensive perfumes. I ended up selling most of my perfumes and did not make half the money back.
I know it's overconsumption-core, but I love watching purse restock videos. My pet peeve is when people get the Touchland sanitizers and put them in a pouch. Like, you're gonna touch the inside of your bag and then the pouch and then the sanitizer. It completely negates the point. Sometimes they have a carrier inside another pouch!!
I'm with you on the nails, but for a different reason. I keep my nails extremely short. If I don't, I seem to cut myself on them. I'm like an infant who needs those itty bitty mittens on her hands. If I had acrylic nails I would probably end up needing stitches.
Your comment on the uggs and the salt stains made me remember how crazy people went over them in New York. Even though we had nasty snowstorms and they’d get so messed up from the salts, people still swore by them.
the touch land hand sanitizer is so wild to me. i use the bath and body works hand sanitizer (not the spray, the other one) cuz i can keep it on my belt loop with the little holder they sell, and they’re like $2 a thing and often on sale.
I liked the concept of Replica perfumes so I bought the sampler for like $25-30. I was so glad I did because not only was it more affordable but I also found out that Replica perfumes can sometimes give me a headache. I’m grateful I didn’t pay $200+ for a migraine 😅
Things influencers could never sell me: any stanley/water bottle accessory, summer fridays lip balm, lululemon bags, those veggie chopper containers (look nice but I know they're probably a pain in the butt to wash), laneige lip mask, ugg slippers (agree with you; will never spend $140 on shoes I can only wear inside the house), tower 28 spray
I never thought I’d be one to use the Touchland sanitizer. A friend of mine had one in her bag and I used it to get the sticky off my hands once. I have a lot of texture issues and this was the first hand sanitizer that didn’t give me the ick. So it’s worth it for me, but def not for everyone.
I don’t enjoy redoing my nails so often but it worked wonders for me. I was biting my nails for over 10 years of my life. It ruined my nails, teeth and jaw too and had to get braces to correct some stuff. Since I get them done - gel nail Polish no extension - I don’t have the urge to bite them anymore. Traditional nail polish didn’t work as it chipped fast and you couldn’t pay me enough to paint my own nails and wait for it to dry. But I do love short natural nails, like yours for example. The shape is pretty. Mine after so many years aren’t as good lookin. I hope one day I’ll get over the habit and go au naturelle ;)
I originally had airpods and they would constantly fall out of my ears, especially while running and sweat made them stop working. Meanwhile ive had the same pair of raycons for 2 years and no issues
I agree with a lot of the items discussed. I have to say good perfumes are and have always been a luxury product. You did mention skills but there is also the uniqueness of it. You want a scent that suits you and use it lightly which makes it a purchase that lasts at least a year (when you buy a 100ml or 200ml bottle). Totally agree with you for airpod max. I became a Mac enthusiast 17 years ago when I was tired of getting viruses in my computers. I'm still "faithful" to the brand when it comes to computers, tablets and phones. Because they synchronise and this feature is extremely useful to my job. But apart from the computer, I always buy devices that are 3 to 5 years old, (when the price is more reasonable to me) and they work perfectly well. I will never get an apple watch because I don't see the point of it, nor will I ever get AirPods. Very interesting video!! I will never be influenced to buy makeup because I seldom wear it, and the same goes for bags and shoes. I do not like to be targeted by thieves because of exterior signs of wealth lol! In all seriousness, I was raised in a wealthy family and then we lost almost everything. This taught me and my siblings not to attach our value and worth to belonging and belongings 😋
You raise a great point with perfumes, because you're right that they're a luxury. I think my gripe is more about the influence, where luxuries are being treated as necessities, must-haves, or essentials. Part of that is on the influencer, but also on me for getting roped up in it
I get all of my Uggs from the outlet! I got the platform pairs for $14 last year at an outlet during Veterans Day 😊And I have had my pairs for the past 8 years! They are practical for the cold weather and not snow/salt. I love them though and they are my go to shoe. That and converse. I really only wear those 😂
Even practically the food organizers make no sense. What if I don’t have the exact quantity of food to fill that particular container? Then the rest of it is just wasted space.
Thanks for using an example of how you wanted a pair of uggs but talked yourself out of the purchase! I’d love to hear more about the way you work through NOT buying certain things that you thought you wanted. But I also wouldn’t mind seeing what you do consider worth your money and why you justified it. Love your videos! I think we should all be more conscious and confident with our spending. I no longer feel weird walking out of a store without buying anything. Small wins
Quince had a Tasman dupe I bought last year and they are sooo cute, comfy, and 50 USD. Would highly recommend, they’re my favorite go to shoe. I definitely love buying affordable dupes of products I like!
I went to a sephora store to sniff some perfumes I wanted and I hated all of them! Personnally, I like to test perfume with free sephora sample. That way I know if I really like it.
The manicure one I can relate to😂 I also get one or two gel or acrylic manicures per year, but sometimes I am too cheap to go back for removal so I will painstakingly soak them or chip them off myself . It’s totally horrible for your nails, but I don’t care😮
No the flared leggings and wide leg pants are literally replacing all skinny pants for me! I find if you have bigger thighs and feel fat/short in skinny pants go for the wider stuff, it will balance you out!and I never found stuff that were tight on my legs comfy or flattering
@sharonngongo175 Thank you for this tip, I might have to try it out as I'm midsized and 5 feet , but in true millennial fashion I'm clutching on to my skinny jeans. They do need to be replaced though 10+ years old, so I'll be on the look out for flared!
No perfume is worth hundreds of dollars. And a dupe for $200??? What the heck is wrong with people? I bought some dupes from Dossier at $30 a bottle, did an experiment and two of the three smelled EXACTLY like the fragrance they were copying. And even if they hadn't, they were still good fragrances that I would wear anyhow. I don't need perfume for a while now LOL
Another issue with fragrances is how long they take to use. My MIL gave me a Replica sampler for Xmas last year and 1. I don't love wearing every scent 2. Even though I'm activily trying to use them I haven't even made a dent in one a year later.
touchland hand sanitizers caught my eye in the travel minis aisle of target because I always see them on TikTok. Basically everything in that section is under $5 and I literally gasped when I saw they were $10! Nah, for that price, it had better cure my immunodeficiency 😂
I love spray hand sanitizers but 10$ is literally *insane* for one. The ones I've gotten are half that or even less
It’s “cute” and would slip easily into a purse but not for $10!
Dollar Tree has a dup for it and it is just good and it is only $1.25.
I use Suave or Herbal Essence shampoo and conditioner and drug store face wash. I bought a Coach bag second hand and it broke within a few months.
Still, I think we should reward companies that make repair easy in this age of planned obsolescence.
yes! I really don't need the best of everything. Affordable, practical, or middle of the road items are fine for me most of the time.
a light brown 50 dollar eyeshadow is insane.
I love my bose and am on year 5 with them. have just had to buy new cushions a couple of times
@@april1947 same! 😁 I just replaced the cushions, and the headphones are back to being as noise cancelling as they ever were
I'm the same! I brought some second hand particularly for noise cancellation on flights and while I don't use them often they're still going after 5 years and I think they were worth the investment.
Bose headphones are worth the dough.
yes love my bose headphones, got them during black friday. i have used them everyday for 4 years now. ive had to replace the ear cushions one time so far and the replacements are doing well. worthwhile investment to me personally.
The one trendy fridge “hack” I can get behind is putting produce in the side compartments in the fridge door, and swapping the condiments that would normally go there into the crisper drawers. This has helped immensely budget-wise and to encourage healthy eating because the fruit and veggies are so visible and noticeable, no longer banished to the drawer of death and spoilage 💀
So refreshing to see this kind of content in a sea of wishlists and must haves!
that also has helped me (my adhd tends to make me not remember things that are shoved in drawers like that)!!!
@@imaginingdefeat omg that’s a brilliant solution 😱
@@imaginingdefeat I love that! My produce wouldn't fit in my door but that's such a cool idea. I have a plate on my counter that I stock with fruit to remind me and my family that we have it and can eat it.
@imaginingdefeat plus our fruits and veggies need to be cool not cooolllld and I like the idea of my condiments remaining in the fridge when i open the door often.
@@imaginingdefeat omg I have never thought about doing this but this is a genius idea so thank you for bringing it to my attention!!!
Flaired leggings in winter is a no go because the bottoms just get soaked! I spent all of high school with cold ankles because the bottom of my pants got wet on the way to school and I am not interested in doing that again.
Oh, I’ve been there as well. Totally see your point 👍
Oh God, the long ass flared early 2000s jeans that were always soggy. What a horrible memory.
I was always falling over mine 😅
I remember that! No fun!
lol I hear you. 😅😂
The only aesthetic my fridge needs is having cheese and eggs and maybe tomatoes 🫡
another thing influencers will never be able to sell to me is the way a lot of them talk. so i really appreciate you speaking so calmly 😊
I have never in my life seen someone use a touchland hand sanitizer out in the wild 😂 so bizzare to me that we live in a world with a "cool" hand sanitizer like why
I also haven't seen one out in the wild yet but I do suspect that's (at least in part) because they're not as accessible here
@@ellieamorous4372 i use em but they are overrated for sure. Ima use em up & not repurchase.
My future MIL likes them. I've used hers and actually quite like it 😂
This is such a good perspective from overseas. I appreciate this outlook.
With 100% certainty, I can say that I have never purchased a beauty product that I would tell someone to "run, don't walk to purchase." Never!
I have but only one and it was 2-3yrs ago. It was a very specific type of lipstick with an unusual and colour and smelled/tasted of vanilla. It was a joy to use until my baby (at the time) ate it.😂
The only time I ever do that is when something I know is actually good is on sale by at least 40% 😂
The only thing I would EVER say this about is a nice, affordable face wash with good ingredients for those with acne prone skin - hello cetaphil lol
honestly the fridge containers do have a use!
No way!
Fridge containers are fine but I wouldn’t spend more than $3 on them. I brought mine from dollarama
THIS
I'm french too and a student, I used to be in a very fancy French school ( in a foreign country but still ) and the amount of students how imported articles from the US and the UK and even Australia (nothing from Japan or Korea because thoses countries were not popular yet in bourgeois spaces) that were unavailable here and used to flex them was crazy ( especially as someone that's from a worker background lol ).
The part about influencers is very true because, I myself sadly, find myself wanting articles that are unavailable here sometimes after seeing influencers show them off 😕
This is such an interesting observation, and really appreciate you sharing. It certainly adds more layers and nuance to influencing
I‘ve seen this many times before…
Many students on scholarships will make their own luck, while some „rich kids“ will still be dependent on their parents years after graduation. Paving your own way is hard, but never becoming an independent and self-determined adult is a worse fate in my eyes.
A Stanley cup. I have a 21 ounce cup from Walmart that works just as well for toting around ice and water.
I love my 1L generic. It's sheer enough that I can make my favorite mocktail to the proportions I want without having to measure in a separate cup. :)
I have a 6 year old Klean Kanteen. Remember those? I still love it, and my other insulated bottle is a corporate swag freebie. Screw a $50 Stanley.
Yes! 100%
Bose quiet comforts are so much better!!!!
3:40 I have enough special eyeshadows shades to tell anyone that no, makeup is not life changing. Some tools and/or products can make your life easier because they help you achieve that specific aesthetic you're looking for but calling that life-changing is a big reach 😂
With you on this take
Over the years I have developed the habit of thinking "what is appealing to me from this product" and that helps me either get a cheaper alternative, a reusable alternative or even talk myself out of the "buying need". For example, the touchland sanitizers are super cute but I would never but them because they are ridiculously expensive for what they are and I realized that what I personally like of them is the bottle so I got a refilable bottle in the exact same shape at the dollar store and that really made it for me.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
15:41 also i am a cosmetic chemist. And perfumery is actually a very very unique science and field. The pricing has less to do with the brand pr the actual components and more to do with the amount of research that went into creating the fragrance raw material. Also fragrant compounds are usually present in lower amounts in their natural sources so you need alot of processing to get the purified compound. Not saying people should spend alot on fragrance. Zara has cheap ones with synthetic blends. But as a fragrance geek just thought id share some knowledge
thank you for sharing!!
Not only this but there’s a huge monopoly on who makes the purified fragrance oils. They were recently raided by Europes “Fair Trade Commission” there’s a big lawsuit going down behind closed doors over how much they charge and how they happen to be the only people working with fragrance oils.
Anyone else sick and tired of the word aesthetic! It grinds my gears! 😂
I did me.
and the phrase "I'm obsessed!"

omg thank you for noticing 😊
The water and salt stain problem is why I almost never wear my Bearpaw boots. I got them at Ross so they were not pricey, but still, I have to remind myself not to get things I will be afraid to actually wear/use.
There are very good spray protectors available, for suede and leather footwear. I live in Canada, and I spray my shoes and boots every few weeks during winter. Salt stains are no longer a problem!
Same reason I never got any white sneakers, never getting shoes I can't clean and maintain easily.
Noooooo so sorry to hear this
Thank you - I was severely tempted to buy one this BF, but I’ve successfully resisted.
Nice! All I got was a plastic bag to put my clothes in!
As a Scandinavian, it is crazy to hear the word room rate about a hospital
I found your channel last week and i cant stop watching your videos. This is such a breath of fresh air in the world of overconsumption.
@@GelaMarie83 same here! 😂
as a german, seeing birkenstocks become trendy and being advertised as stylish was the wildest thing
You are making me realize how much I use/rely on retail therapy to get through the week sometimes
This is the perfect outcome I'd hope for with uggs 😢 I'm so happy you like yours and find them special !!
I wouldn't buy the real thing even though I'm sure it's higher quality than most replicas because no one would ever see them lmao, and the replicas have enough of that fuzzy comfy feeling to be good warm slippers in the house
weird compliment but i love how quiet your videos are 😂
I created some drawer and frig organizers from old pyrex-like glass storage containers that lost their lids.
I am with you on this. I keep one attached to my backpack and my belt bag. They're $2 each so it works for me
I love painting my nails and trying different color combinations ❤
I also get to decide when to do it and when take it off instead of waiting for an appointment
I’ve been doing my own nails for 40 years! It’s very relaxing!
@@daniellescherb3079 Same! I save so much money doing my own nails at home (just normal laquer). It’s fun too!
Uggs annoy me so much. They always have. In my neck of the woods you also need waterproofing on boots or something that holds up in salt conditions! Uggs are so impractical for the price. It kills me.
They're mainly worn as slippers here (Australia), and the only people that wear them outside are often seen as trashy. Ugg boots are ugg-ly!
@@itskindofemily slippers at least make sense. But the ads I tend to see have people walking outside and probably wearing a scarf too. 🤦
I loved how you talked about nails. I recognized the value I get from them. I wear them for 5-6 weeks and enjoy all this time. I look at them and feel good.
I love that you've found what works for you 💕
I go every 4-5 weeks for mine. I get mine done really short plus they take quite a while to grow out.
Thank you for being a voice of reason. I’ve been watching a ton of your videos lately.
700 dollars for headphones?? I'd rather never listening to music again fr
There's music players that cost more than that LOL high end audio gets crazy
@@diethylmalonate@diethylmalonate I don't know why anyone pays for high-end audio when Sennheiser is exactly the same quality or better for like, a third of the price?
Me: Listens to music on tinny iPhone speaker 😂
Who's the idiot who thinks we should care about how our fridges look?😂
@@NadaAhmed-x8e fr as long as it's clean and not a complete mess I'm okay
lol I actually just bought a new bottle of a replica perfume, but I totally get why it's not for you!
I would recommend the $25-$40 travel size 10 mL perfumes instead of full bottles if it took you that long to go through a 2 mL tester
I really love the sound quality, I wear them for hours a day at work for computer and at home, in my apartment where I use it with the tv…so good to me
Some items influencers will never succeed in getting me to buy:
- A Stanley cup
- Sol De Jeneiro (Any product)
- Uggs (Any)
- Those shower scrubs
- Any designer makeup (Prada, Chanel, Dior lip oil, etc.)
- Hair tools (Airwrap, etc.)
- Skims or anything Kardashian related
- Any kitchen tool that only has one specific niche use
how funny, my uggs from high school are still in perfect condition...bc i grew up in a suburb and never walked anywhere. so salt from the roads wasn't a problem. i do want the new ones but i just balk at buying from an unethical company new. i would consider getting them secondhand though
Please do a video about gift guides lol. I loveeeee your channel! 🥰
Haha she will say something like budget accordingly 😂
@Amyjwashere I made a video about gifting for my members last month and basically yes 😅
(especially if it’s a more expensive one)
Did just want to point out that Phlur isn’t actually that different from Replica price wise.
Really enjoying your vlogmas content - it is an antidote to the constant selling and stealth advertising on social media these days. Thank you
I make perfume for a living and while there is a lot of skill involved, I agree that scent is SO subjective.
I agree with the other reply on this comment - the way you enjoy fragrance isn't what she's talking about
I’ve found myself just always coming back to your videos!!
And they stay glued to my nails for like 3 weeks, I could never go to a salon now
So happy for videos every day this month!
Unrelated : your haircut is so cute!
I'm truly happy to hear this! Thank you for being a part of the community ❤
I was having such an anxious morning and your video snapped me out of it.
I'm so sorry to hear that you've had a rough one today. I'm glad I could help and wishing you a lovely rest of the day 💕
@@shawnariparithank you!! Listening to your videos while I worked was so calming 💟
@@feriaparker those hand sanitizers are FSA eligible so people could also be buying them with FSA money before they lose it.
Really like your hairstyle here! Suits you very well
Thank you!! I loved it a lot too
i think buying cute little harmless things that can make the use of daily items a little more... whimsical. it adds a little bit of fun and needed pleasantness in daily life. but those items should meet certain criteria: is it worth the price for you specifically? will you get good use of it? is it good quality? does it really make you happy, or is it an impulse buy because of something like retail therapy?
for example: getting your nails done constantly is VERY WORTH IT for people with nail biting/picking problems. having pretty nails stops people from biting and picking, their skin heals, their nails end up in a healthy spot, and stops the bad habit!
The touch land hand sanitizer is one of the most annoying things I’ve seen. Nobody can ever sell that to meeeee hahaha 😂
Touch land sanitizer also makes your hands super dry and prone to cracking!! 😬😭
They got me with bloom. That shit was so nasty 🤢
Nooooooo haha
I'm with you on the nails, but for a different reason. I keep my nails extremely short. If I don't, I seem to cut myself on them. I'm like an infant who needs those itty bitty mittens on her hands. If I had acrylic nails I would probably end up needing stitches.
Same here!
My nails are so sharp for no reason 😅
Your comment on the uggs and the salt stains made me remember how crazy people went over them in New York. Even though we had nasty snowstorms and they’d get so messed up from the salts, people still swore by them.
I hate Birkenstock Bostons. 😂 Sorry. I know people say they are comfortable but I hate them. They look like Shrek peasant shoes.
😂😂😂 fact, I got the knock off for $30 and love them for running to the store or something but just couldn’t spend $160 😮
the touch land hand sanitizer is so wild to me. i use the bath and body works hand sanitizer (not the spray, the other one) cuz i can keep it on my belt loop with the little holder they sell, and they’re like $2 a thing and often on sale.
Love your vlogs so much. I grew some good consciousness on consumption. Wish you best
I'm so happy to hear this ❤
I originally had airpods and they would constantly fall out of my ears, especially while running and sweat made them stop working.
