I admit, I am not a huge fan of high school movies. Yet this one and 'Pump up the Volume' are the two exceptions and accompanied me through my teenage years
That school, Stadium High School, is in Tacoma, Wash., which is about 45 minutes south of Seattle. My high school had to have our home football games there because we didn't have a field. I remember when this movie was being filmed here and it was kind of a big deal since there has only been a few films shot in Tacoma ("Three Fugitives", "Hand That Rocks the Cradle", "Sweet Revenge" just to name a few).
Great reaction as usual. One of the most sharply written teen comedies around, and just a lot of fun. My wife still cracks me up by randomly wondering aloud if you can ever just be whelmed.
Better Off Dead is one of the weirdest "teen" movies I've ever seen, probably only matched by Three O'Clock High. Come to think of it, that'd be a hell of a double-feature.

This movie happens to be my eldest sister's favourite movie (or at least one of her favourites). It's the movie that made Heath Ledger her big celebrity crush/hall pass (I guess she'll need to rethink that hall pass thing now). I was working at a movie theatre when it came out and got to see it for free. I really liked it and couldn't understand how Siskel & Ebert could give it 2 thumbs down. The theatre had a huge banner on the wall advertising the film. When it was time to take it down I rolled it up and took it home. That year I gave it to my sister for Christmas. I didn't even know that she loved the movie, I just thought that it would be a cool decoration for the family's rec room. She loved it, and to my knowledge she and her husband still keep it on their rec room wall (not 100% sure as I haven't been able to visit her for a long time, and they've moved a couple of times since the last time I visited).
Heath Ledger - born and raised in Perth, Australia. I've always loved that shot of the flyers floating down the stairwell. Also, Bogey Lowenstein is actor/comedian Kyle Cease - the guy is hilarious.
You just dissed the only part of high school chemistry that I actually enjoyed and liked! I loved experiments which needed the Brunson burner because I liked the clicky flint starter. And, no, I’m not a pyro! I seriously just liked the sound and satisfaction when I got the flame going
Being more of a "theatre" nerd, I love watching your reactions because you point out things in filmmaking that I see, but I never realized. Of course, I recognized all parallels to Taming of the Shrew, and the other references to Shakespeare's works, but a lot of what you pointed out I missed. I have to go back and re-watch this, keeping in mind the points you made!😁
This happens to be my ex-wife's favourite movie (we're still friends, btw). I hadn't seen it until she introduced it to me, and I'm grateful she did. I really enjoy this movie, even though it's formulaic as you mentioned. It's still so good.
several of the songs in this movie are by the 90s band, Letters to Cleo - the lead singer, Kay Hanley, also did the majority of the music & vocals for Josie & the Pussycats, which is another iconic teen movie from 2001, & a brilliant satire on the music industry & consumerism. you absolutely have to watch that one at some point, if you haven’t seen it.
I really enjoy this movie as I'm from Tacoma, WA and it's nice to see my hometown represented on screen, even if Seattle is kind of mixed in. I was also in high school in the mid/late 90s, so this came out at the right time, although I don't think I actually sat down and watched it until a couple years later. It's a lot of fun, though.
'The Taming Of The Shrew' by THE BARD! LOVE this film. Watched it in the cinema on a ferry traveling to collect my mother for my sister's funeral! Was able to forget the overwhelming grief for at least an hour thanks to this total GEM. Own it on DVD now and indulge every few months. Love the music too.
This was one of my daughter's favorite movies when she was in her early teens. I never paid too much attention to it, but once when she was watching it I noticed that the dad was wearing the same shirt I was wearing, the cream colored flannel with the pockets at about 27:00 in your video. Definitely a "dad" shirt. Her other favorite film from her early teens was Legally Blonde.
I loooooved this movie as a teenager. I was a junior in high school when it came out and I rented the VHS from our local Movie Gallery countless times before my best friend finally bought me a copy of it. I'm pretty sure I could still recite most of it, and I might even have the soundtrack CD around here somewhere. It also cemented my early love of Heath Ledger, may he rest in peace. I love the dialogue, the cast, the characters, the story, the humor, the touching moments, and although a few things don't hold up 20+ years later, for the most part this movie is still one I really really love. Thanks for your reaction!
I love Larry Miller. Also, Kay Hanley of Letters From Cleo, who did the Cheap Trick cover for this movie, did a great interview with Howard Stern back when she had taught the lady stars of Josie & the Pussycats how to act like rock stars.

I admit, I am not a huge fan of high school movies. Yet this one and 'Pump up the Volume' are the two exceptions and accompanied me through my teenage years
Pump Up The Volume needs to be reacted to by anyone. Also Heathers both have Christian Slater. Side note - both are high school movies.
Kudos for the River Phoenix mention.
"Can't hardly wait" it's the next logical step after American graphitti, dazed and confused, etc
She's All That, American Pie, Can't Buy Me Love, Varsity Blues
Please watch Can’t Hardly Wait.
Heath Ledger in guilty -A Knights Tale- is one of my biggest pleasures.
I think A Knights Tale is my favorite of his movies.
Di Caprio did a "Romeo + Juliet" set Modern, but fully Shakespeare style Dialogue.
Very Teen.
Awful too, just didn't work.
@@sidrat2009 God yes it was horrible.
sidrat2009 Oh, I thought it was awesome. Baz Luhrmann movies are so much fun. It’s all so tongue in cheek..
@@sidrat2009 David Tennant actually recommends people watch that (instead of reading Romeo and Juliet) for their introduction to the story.
Empire Records is also a great teen movie.
I love this movie so much. There's no reason for the monolog to make me cry every single time I see it, and yet it does.
"Bernard" from The Santa Clause was actually the star of his own show, called Numb3rs, which was actually pretty good.
Heath Ledger was indeed Australian. Btw, try Secret Admirer 1985. It's a really fun 80s movie.
Yes! Young Corey Haim as the little brother!
Jump back to the 80’s and check out “Better off Dead” and “Some Kind of Wonderful” and one more from the 90’s, Jawbreaker
Better Off Dead is one of the weirdest "teen" movies I've ever seen, probably only matched by Three O'Clock High. Come to think of it, that'd be a hell of a double-feature.
I love that you have a bit of insight on a bit of everything but don't over do it, I've seen other rather disecting movies in stead of just enjoying themselves and share a bit of what they notice while watching, kudos for that perfect balance!
Oh, and we all love that "I looovee youuuu baby" musical scene with the band, it was so out of character that it took us by surprise and won our hearts for sure
Julia Styles Was in another Shakespeare Adaptation Film Called "O" Based on The Play Othello. She was Amazing in it.
She played Ophelia in a modern-day adaptation of Hamlet which also had Ethan Hawke and Bill Murray.
In Get Over It, they do classical Shakespeare with a contemporary musical twist. It's a cute little high school movie with a ton of recognizable faces.
Whole-movie solidarity! I will absolutely refuse to watch a movie if I miss even the first minute, so I know where you're coming from with this one
YES you get it! And this was ALWAYS ON
Also yes, this soundtrack was ICONIC.
Yes, we had archery in gym class. One of my favorite sports we were introduced to in gym. Would like to take it up now, used to be good at it.
If you haven't seen it, I'd also recommend watching Can't Hardly Wait (1998) starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ethan Embry.
I really love the movies you're choosing to react to. They're all movies that I've seen a bunch of times and absolutely love, and you just seem to get them. It's so fun to see your reactions, and especially to see you grinning at all the best parts. 😊
There's a movie out there call "Not Another Teen Movie."
This movie was such a good time that I had to watch it a second time back to back.
Good *Raunchy* Fun
It's a parody of films I copied from a wiki. I noticed that you have watched some of these movies:
She's All That is the main focus of NATM. Varsity Blues, 10 Things I Hate About You, Can't Hardly Wait, Pretty in Pink. Plus Bring It On, American Pie, Cruel Intentions, American Beauty, Never Been Kissed, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Can't Buy Me Love, Jawbreaker, Sixteen Candles, Dazed and Confused, Lucas, Rudy, The Breakfast Club, Grease, and Road Trip.
I just discovered your channel and I’m loving it. I’m a new to RUclips person too and I never do a proper intro bc I’m just not together enough for that. You’re human and that’s what people like I think. At least I like it.
I have to go back and re-watch this, keeping in mind the points you made!😁
One of my guilty pleasure movies. This came out at the end of my 8th grade year.
I love that you refer to David Krumholtz as "Bernard," cause that's the first thing I think of when I see him, lol.
One of my favorite movies, this reaction was great!
Seattle/Tacoma represent
fun fact- Joaquin Phoenix's dance on the stairs in Joker was a tribute to Heath's stadium stairs dance. It's the same dance
When Joker and Robin is in the same movie together.
The dude who played Bernard is from the American pie movies and when you mentioned your head shots it reminded me of how I need new ones
I was hoping you would have reacted to the bloopers too. Hope you had a chance to watch them!
if you like high school movies a good one that not a lot of people are familiar with is Can't Hardly Wait. Def worth the watch!
I love Larry Miller. Also, Kay Hanley of Letters From Cleo, who did the Cheap Trick cover for this movie, did a great interview with Howard Stern back when she had taught the lady stars of Josie & the Pussycats how to act like rock stars.
Watch Better Off Dead, I’d love to hear a film makers take on this classic 80s high school gem.
Whenever I see this movie now, during the inevitable break up 3/4ths of the way through the movie, I always think to myself. "That's when I decided to take my own life with a knife. But it didn't work. THAT. Is how I really got these scars." lol
I had never heard of this movie before but decided to watch this anyway. I am a fan of Larry Miller (The father).
He plays the dad in the tv show in the 2010’s too! He’s my favorite in both
@@brittbratt101123 He also played the evil doorman on an episode of Seinfeld.
