- In 1989 Director Terry Gilliam began working on a film. It was destined to be his next big picture. An adaptation of the Spanish epic novel "Don Quixote" written by Miguel de Cervantes and published all the way back in 1605. It was to be called "The man who killed Don Quixote". However what started as an exciting new project would turn into a waking nightmare for Gilliam which saw the film not being released until almost 30 years later.

This experience explains why Depp said its a miracle to get any film made. Clearly. Props to persistence.
One good observation I heard is that usually when production companies experience calamity they can just throw money at the problem, however there was no money left on this project to push through.

Thanks so much for showing to us how a film is made, the creative side of it, the filming of the scene and why is so hard and difficult to put a film up. The most interesting side of this is that all these difficulties are common to any good director and not only to this vision of making this film. The 30 years it took to finalize the vision of this film ....I hope it was worthed the wait.

I am sure he has the touch but after being with that amber he loses some of his touch yes his finger and she would have taken him for everything it seemed like to me and that's so bad for my depp I am a fan of his big time
There's actually another one. "Divine Rapture" with Marlon Brando. They began filming but funding dried up. It was shelved.

This is such a heartbreaking situation. As said in the video, everything that went wrong, went wrong. Just one thing after another. Sad about the terrible illness and pain of the lead actor. Great it got made finally, anyway.🙂❤

They made a documentary about this disaster Lost In La Mancha. It came out before the movie.
I saw lost in LaMancha that’s why this is so familiar. I kept thinking never seen- please! I wouldn’t let that happen. Gilliams work was always a standout. It rose to a new level with the pressures of this film.

I've seen the documentary and Gilliam was sabotaged by his First AD. He should have got ridden of him after the first week.

To be honest, the only movies Johnny was ever in that didn't suck were Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco, and the Pirates series. And the only role he had that was interesting was Captain Jack.
