  • First of all I would like to say that I admire your work on youtube and many times your videos helped a lot to go through my university’s projects.
    I’m currently doing my final year Computer Science Bachelor Degree and I have started thinking about my master for next year.
    I’m a bit confuse thought about what to follow, cause I would like to follow something that it will have a really good impact on my future career, you know.
    Im thinking about Master Degree on Computer Engineering cause Im getting really excited dealing with circuits and different components that you have to wire up and then write some code about it.
    On the other hand Im thinking about CyberCrime. I think that not many students choose this, these days. So, I’ll have more chances to get a job easily when I finish. Im kind of excited for both, thats why Im kind struggling about what to follow.
    All that is my point of view. I would really appreciate if you could share with me your professional point of view. It will really help me out a lot.
    If you have any other subject in mind, that it worth to consider feel free to share it with me.
    -Kyriakos N.

    Don't compare a cyber security master's to a degree in criminal justice. In a cyber security degree you actually learn skills that make you useful to society.

    When I was younger I aspired to be a cyber security engineer. I have done so after a lot of years in the field. Here are my thoughts,
    Please do not get a masters degree in 'cybercrime'. I agree with Eli on this somewhat; Unless you're looking to be a manger in the future this will not help you one bit. Get some experience with hands on technical engineering first.
    If this is something that you have burning desire to do, than this plan should help you.
    Start off by getting a CCNA, CCNP and some experience. Learn operating systems Windows/Linux(you'll need to know both). Once you have this general basis under your belt you can get into the fun stuff.
    Programming;
    python/powershell/Javascript/C/Assembly

      Great input. And honestly that last bit you said applies to MOST fields. Alot of fields have their own nuances and you MUST love what you do in order to thrive. My advice to anyone searching for a career: dont chase after what you think you SHOULD do and go after what you DESIRE to do..and you will find sucess.

    I really appreciate this video. I myself received a bachelor's in criminal justice due to my interest in law enforcement. Half way down the road I learned having this degree wasn't needed and there's really no job market with this degree. I eventually asked myself what if I didn't get into law enforcement (NYPD). I would have to pursue another field and spend more money and time again for school.
    It gives me some sense of relief when I hear other people who have gone through the same dilemma as I and have a successful career. I myself was lucky enough to get accepted to a tech school were I will pursue a bachelor's degree in computer engineering but it will only take me 3 full semesters to get it done. Many of my credits transferred so I'm not stuck with taking prerequisite classes.
    Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for giving me more confident in pursuing this new career path and look forward doing work in hardware engineering.

    *In my opinion, Information Technology doesn't distinguish between any IT field. You can graduate with a degree in Computer Engineering and land a job as a Web Developer as long as you are good.* Computer Science - Software Engineer - Computer Engineer - Network Engineer - Information Security Engineer - *They are all the same as long as you are good at what you do.*

      At some places, the 'engineering' term makes an important distinction between knowing anything about electronics/hardware or not. But a lot of Computer Science programmes (like those at Cambridge) include an electronic hands-on component (like you'd get at most engineering schools) as well - making it very similar to Computer Engineering. But I agree, all these terms are way to finicky - in reality most of them are the same thing.

    • @flame200
      @flame200 3 года назад +1

      He's not against it, but he says that the subject can be learned even through computer engineering because it's such an easy to learn subject. If you just study to become a law enforcement, you won't have any other options other than that. However, if you study let's say mathematics, or computer engineering, you can still work for cyber security if you get a training in hacking and such. It makes sense.

      I think it is understandable, cyber security is deceptive because there are so many cyber security jobs that need to be filled but working in Cyber security is usually a senior position therefore a Cyber security degree isn't exactly meaningless but a lot harder to get a job out of uni.

    Whoever asked this question, I hope you listened to his advice!! Not everyone will tell you the truth, most people just say things you want to hear (marketing gimmicks, etc.). Wish someone had told me this before I did my Master's degree. This stuff is invaluable; the early 20s are very precious, and earning a solid work experience during these years will pay back over the years even though it might not seem like a lucrative option at the time. Accept those minimum wages/internships, whatever comes your way and GET INTO THE FIELD!! Keep build your resumé, but never stop learning either!!
    Like he said, the best option is to take up a Master's degree while working, so you have a secure job and looks great on your resumé too!! Even better if you manage to make your employer sponsor your tuition (partly or in full), etc. That's the safest way to go imo. Academia is mostly just a booming business these days :( so if you REALLY want to get an extraordinary learning experience and develop bankable connections/grow your network while doing it, your options are VERY LIMITED (I mean in single digits ;)). Anyone reading this, wish you all the best in your future endeavors!! Carpé Diem!!!

      because if you actually listened to what he said in the video: it's limiting career wise: most computer science degrees can allow you to learn cyber security as part of a module/specialism: if you are a computer scientist YOU DO NOT NEED A MASTERS IN CYBER SECURITY TO DO CYBER SECURITY: anyone who thinks this is an idiot and you are losing out on career prospects in other fields just to be limited in learning a niche skill set.

    He's right, spend a year or so out in the workforce figuring out if you enjoy what you're doing. I got my Bachelor's in IT Management and I found that I actually enjoyed spending my free time working on Cybersecurity stuff more, even though I worked as an IT Manager full time. I am now pursuing my Master's in Cybersecurity and am very confident, happy, and excited about my future. However I disagree about cybercrime being a "very small niche" especially if you look into any Federal jobs. It's a huge opportunity to help out this country with what's going on right now in the world.

      I had a similar career experience. I got bachelor's degree in Management of Information Systems, and I didn't really like all the management stuff in my program but I was already almost done with my degree. I had an intern on my last semester where I got involved with support and working with network hardware. This opened my eyes to a very different and new field in IT. I have been working with endpoint management systems for the last 17 out of my 27 year career. My college degree might have contributed less than 10% of what I ever needed. I learned the rest hands on while working at each company through the years. All other engineers that I know including those in the Security Team are just regular engineer s who did some self-study and/or got some training and certification while already at work. I'm talking about a $10 billion company with nearly 450 IT staff. One of the level 1 Security engineer was just a guy who was promoted from desktop support team.

    I think that you should consider the school first then look at the courses in the curriculum. Look at the business and cyber law courses in the curriculum because at the Masters and Doctorate levels understanding; PKI,SOX,Safe harbor, PCI, HiPPA, CIPA and yes even DMCA (PKI and PCI are the only non U.S Federal laws I mention) is more important than learning new buzz words or scare tactics. I say the same for engineering with this word of caution engineering Masters programs are not easy at all

    I'm in the same page here. I have a computer science bachelor degree and i was thinking about doing a master in computer engineering with a concentration in Computer Networks and Computer Security . I know its not the same as a cyber security master since the program its more about building the system rather than penetrated and analysed. But my question is, would be worth it? or will have almost the same consequences has if it was a master in cyber security?

      It maybe worth while.
      Think of it like this. Hacking is basically the same thing we do when we manipulate a person. Ask yourself how do we manipulate someone. You will find any means of communications. Seeing, hearing, smell, touch, etc. When looking at the programs, you need to ask yourself if it teaches how computers talk. Talk between each other, talk to the software, talk to the Bios, etc.

    I am in a CyberSecurity MS degree at the University of Dallas and the breadth of the program, while still being focused, actually makes a very good program. I was looking at WGU and one of my teachers actually showed me a program he is a sponsor for in Cyber Security downstate for a Uni. I was actually going to do it, now you've got me questioning it lol. I HATE, HATE HAAAATE programming outside of GUI's, so I'm trying to stay away from certain aspects of that lol while still maintaining myself as marketable.

      There are plenty of jobs available for non coders. I was in the same boat. You could do network admin, IT analysis, data analysis, computer engineering, hardware engineering, etc. Technology is so diverse as a whole, there's really nothing you cant do

    • @vanillagirlca

      +Movies trailer Computer science will focus most on coding, algorithms, and understanding how architecture affects performance. Computer science would be good if you want to do software development. Computer engineering is a branch of engineering - think of it as electrical engineering meets computer science. Computer engineering (or electrical engineering) would be most useful if you want to actually go into chip design, hardware design, or electronics design. You probably don't need a degree if you want to go into IT. Get some certifications and some experience, and learn how to solve problems your own. From what I've seen, entry level IT pays the worst of the three, although IT managers at larger companies can be paid pretty well. I think IT is going to be a shrinking industry due to things like Office 365 and other cloud services reducing the need for administrators, whereas computer science and engineering are still likely to grow in the near future.

    Hey guys!! I am about to make a decision whether to do an Msc in Cyber Security or in Data science-Big Data!What's your opinion?I find that Cyber Security is sometimes more theoretical and about applying rules whether on Data science is more like fun.Please enlighten me a little bit.

    • @thanosss91
      @thanosss91 6 лет назад

      I think that basic knowledge of networking would be useful but it is something that will be learnt while you will be studying.If your question is whether you will be dealing a lot with networks the answer is that it depends on the company but i think that of course you will have to work with networks at time to time.But dont be afraid that you will constantly work on networks,its not the case.

    Hi bro, my name is Edward and i'm 15 years old... I've been watching your videos for a long time now, and i I've learned a couple stuff actually.... i decided that i wanted to become a software developer, and i have been investigating about this but i haven't got my mind clear yet..... if i study computer science, would i be able to program, make and design software?... when i was younger, i thought of becoming a hacker too, and i still like the idea.... so the main thing here, is that i would like to get a job as a software developer (because software developers have good salaries in the U.S), but at the same time i would like to have experience in hacking(coding, penetrating, breaching, etc.)... which career should i pick in order to have experience in both programming and hacking?
    by the way, i'm from San Andres island/Colombia.. i hope my English was clear and understandable.
    Thanks.

    What field of study or research should I be In a computer engineering masters, there are many but I don't know exactly what each is and their jobs, I want something that is a mixture of hardware and software and allows you to make computers parts and parts for any device that use a computer and the software for it, what should I pick ?

    • @mattf9076
      @mattf9076 8 лет назад

      +Raycust Ramoon It sounds like you want two worlds. Wanting to design physical computer parts is Electrical Engineering. Computer Engineering will have you writing software for the part while understanding the part itself. I would look into an emphasis in Embedded Systems, ASIC/FPGA design ?

    • @mattf9076
      @mattf9076 8 лет назад

      +Raycust Ramoon Actually you may want to go the FPGA route. Because the "software" for FPGAs isn't really software, you are describing hardware with the FPGA software. That may get you the better of both worlds ?

    • @RaycustMoon
      @RaycustMoon 8 лет назад

      Matt F well what field is that, is it integrated circuits, I searched universities and didn't find such field

    • @mattf9076
      @mattf9076 8 лет назад

      +Raycust Ramoon You won't see(or atleast I have not seen) an area of focus for ASIC/FPGA. There are usually a few classes that touch on FPGAs and then they are used for research.
      Here is an example www.uttyler.edu/academics/graduate/electrical-engineering-degree.php
      towards the bottom you will see a class "FPGA design" and this happens to be part of the Electrical Engineering degree. On MIT's open courseware site, FPGA is just a part of the class ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-884-complex-digital-systems-spring-2005/
      So to answer your question, you will need to contact the college you are interested in and let them know you are looking for as much exposure to FPGA's as possible.

    • @RaycustMoon
      @RaycustMoon 8 лет назад

      Matt F what is FPGA and how is that a field of research you can make your masters in, in computer engineering and I only heard of certain fields like power engineering, networking, software engineering, integrated circuits and so on and so forth

    The best and most sure way to get into the Cyber Security industry is by joining the US Military. The reason for this is because they have the centers and program training for it plus, you will receive governmental clearance to access this kind of secured information. The reason most Cyber candidates can't land the job is because of passing background checks. Most Cyber Security jobs require "Clearance" more than 50% are Top Secret, Some Secret and Public Trust. Meaning credit checks, no crimes committed in your past, good reference checks, and most of all "Experience". So, Essentially Eli is right if you don't want to serve the country its best to stay away from this program.
