The Hitting Clinic with Chris Waye | The Swing

The idea of taking the knob to the ball is something that the late Tony Gwynn talked about when he talked hitting. For one of the greatest hitters of his era, taking the knob to the baseball was a hitting cue that Tony Gwynn used to help him think about the path his hands needed to take into and through the hitting zone in order to hit the baseball.
This particular hitting cue is a topic of discussion in hitting circles because many feel that it creates too steep of an angle for the barrel to get to the baseball. I think this has more to do with Tony Gwynn’s thinking being taken out of context because when done correctly, taking the knob to the baseball or swinging the knob is a great hitting cue to help hitters get their hands on the proper path into and through the hitting zone.
