- Hey guys,
In the second half of our Italian recce we descend the Italian mountains and spend a few days in the city, in Tuscany, right by the beach to see if thats more our cup of tea.
I also had the chance to visit the leaning tower of piza where I could finally unleash something I'd been meticulously planning for years but it sadly things didn't work out the way I expected.
Oh yeah, and I may have relapsed.
Enjoy the show x

I still remember when Grace was a tiny baby. Can't believe how time has flown.
As a family of 4 with 2 boys (similar ages to yours) who have just relocated to the Seychelles, I say do it!!! Even if it's just for 2 years. It will have such a positive impact on the boys. We have next to zero screen time now. My advice would be to figure our their school requirements (international, English speaking etc) and go from there. If they don't get on at school you'll end up leaving again soon x
wow the swychells now that's an amazing place to live
FYI my gang. I’ve been using an app called VidIQ to write my titles. It’s always been the trickiest part of the process for me so I just tell it what the video is about and it generates them for me. Just thought you should know that’s why they sound a bit different. ❤️❤️🚀🌟
Watched you guys from the beginning, loving the regular uploads again. Think cost of living is everywhere! I'm from Scotland, lived in Brisbane Australia for the last 12 years and seriously looking at moving back to the UK! Grass is always greener, think we are all struggling no matter what side of the globe we are on. Looking forward to see what you guys decide!
I did the opposite & moved from Brisbane to the UK 7 years ago, I find the cost of living is insane. Australia though expensive in food and accommodation, in my experience beats the UK with price of fuel, energy and salaries. There are benefits and set backs to both countries though and I am torn whether to stick it out here or head back to Aus.
Stay there the UK is a hole and getting worse, and Scotland is NO better
Lived in Brisbane my whole life … but dual citizen who spent lots of holidays in Europe. Seriously sick of Australia. More and more divided every year. I just want to get the hell out. I feel like I’m in a bad marriage with Australia and I’ve mentally checked out … the only reason I am staying is for the children 😖
Love your videos! It's wonderful to see what awaits when we say YES to adventure and something new.
Steph, Hannah, lovely video. That first year for people struggling with addiction from a substance is a milestone.
From what Hannah’s said, you addressed not drinking to escape negative feelings?
A drink to enjoy when you want one needn’t be bad; a negative.
The 1000 days seems very final and competitive.
If you’re not grappling with addiction issues, I think it’s ok to simply enjoy a drink(s) when you want one, knowing you’ve examined, explored, your relationship with it; that you’re more of a conscious drinker? From both a physical health and psychological health standpoint? Just some thoughts. Ps totally agree re approach to living in Europe. Maybe a holiday place to enjoy? X
We have been traveling full-time for 8+ years and 2 kids. It was the best decision of our life for our family. Our kids are thriving, we have created so many memories and they learned so much about the world. Do it!!! It’s hard, but so rewarding.
Hi from South Florida. I have loved every single bit you guys have produced since before Grayson was born. ❤ I don’t know how you do it with all the judgement and criticism from silent viewers. Sharing your raw life with others has to be the most unselfish sacrifice for your family. At the same time, you have years of film to look back on that has chronicled your life for you and the boys to watch for years to come. Thank You 🙏🏼 Best Wishes for a successful & (fun) relocation journey 😊
You are such an incredible storyteller Stef! Its hypnotic and so captivating - it always nearly brings me to tears! What a wonderfully special talent to have. Beautiful ❤️
I think you‘d love Mallorca! There are so many beautiful sides to that island, off the beaten path. It has a city with good restaurants, the ocean, mountains,… I loved it there! Spent 3 months there last winter ☺️
We live in the UK and are currently moving to Italy having bought a house in Galatone, Puglia. During COVID lockdown, we started questioning where we wanted to be and of all the amazing places we'd been Italy topped the list. Like you, we debated the mountains or the sea and decided while it was nice to visit the mountains, we wanted to live by the sea. Then asked where in Italy? We visited many beautiful places, but none stood out until we went to Puglia. I'm fortunate enough to work remotely so we rented a house for 3 months (to stay within out 90 day limit) to experience life and not holiday in Italy and Puglia was it! The Salento peninsula ticked all our boxes and we knew it was the place for us. There is so much variety including the variety of the coastline from beautiful sandy beaches to rocky shores and caves. From anywhere in the peninsula, you can get anywhere else in less than an hour. If you want city life, Lecce is nearly 100,000 people with stunning architecture and only 20 minutes from our new house in Galatone. For me, working at home and taking a break on my terrace in the sun for a coffee, then at the end of the work day, just 10 minutes to go to the nearest beach to unwind by the sea after a stressful day, this is the life we want. I'm happy to connect directly if you want to discuss further. (PS We started studying Italian 3 years ago in preparation and knowing the basics definitely comes in handy as fewer people speak English outside the main tourist cities, but Italians are very kind and generous to those who even make a little effort to speak their language!)
Good choice!! Welcome to Italy.
I love that I knew what Stef was going to say about the photo and tower yet it still made me smile! X
Hello from Germany 🤗
I’ve been following your videos for a while now, came across it by accident and got hooked!love the content!
We’ve moved from Uk with children to France (Bergerac) moved back to Uk after 3years…..
Then moved to Germany,as I am german and now moving back to England.
Gras seems greener somewhere else,it never is!
I love the British people and their mentality…….so who knows……maybe one day we move again!
Definitely good luck 🍀 to you all!
I was booze free for 15 months and then stupidly thought oh I'll have 1 pint, big mistake because it slowly but surely crept back in 😫 I'm now back on the wagon approaching the 2 week point, proper gutted that the clock has been reset but onwards I go 💪🏻 I hope you guys don't make that mistake of letting it creep back in because life is so much better without alcohol being apart of it
The real trick is to tilt your camera so that it looks like *you’re* leaning and not the tower, and then have someone hold their hand up to hold *you* up. A true genious idea. I call it "aperol spritz in pisa"
1 am currently on my year abroad in Genova, it's in the Liguria region, so north of Tuscany. It's just the most beautiful place ever, so much cheaper than Tuscany but has amazing train links to Tuscany, Turin, Milan, you can even get a direct train from genova to rome in less than 5 hours. In my opinion it's the best region. It's the birth place of pesto and focaccia - 1 can't express how incredible the food is here. And as I said, it's massively cheaper than other regions in Italy and you get to be by the coast. If you're considering moving to Italy - I would recommend looking into Liguria because you have the best of everything. If you want more info I'm happy to share my experience!
We just came back from a holiday to Genova, and we loved it! It's so beautiful and the people seemed so relaxed!
Go ahead and share, I'd be happy to hear. Especially the experience with kids (if applicable)
You should try Greece too! Check out the islands.... Good quality of life, good vibe, sunny and good weather most days of the year, good food, safe, friendly people, everyone there is speaking English, beautiful beaches, low cost of living, cheap daily flights to England. You should definitely visit and try out! :)
Amazing. I knew where the Pisa gag was going and it was executed so beautifully. 🎉
I moved to Portugal 16 years ago with my husband and then 18 month old daughter, it was the best decision we ever made. Quality of life here is so much better, that isn’t just the weather but it is chilled and all about family values. Also in the southern part language is not an issue, everyone speaks English and welcome foreigners with open arms. Try it!!
I guess you speak Portuguess as a native?
There’s nothing quite like a Michalaks Sunday drop. 🙌🏻
Love you Marky x
Did you design that transition from Rufus to a CG animation? It was incredible!
AI helped :)
the Piza idea. brilliant. the narration by Grayson. so good.
Exciting times and a beautiful place. I always remember....wherever I go, there I am! 💛🧡
We moved to the pays de la Loire at the end of 2020 and have never looked back. It’s beautiful here, a slower pace of life and you get so much more for your money on the houses. Excited for your journey wherever you go ❤
You could have had a Gingerino! It has the same colour as an Aperol spritz and the same refreshing cool feeeellls as one :D
We’re in the process of moving to Europe too from Michigan. Everyone says you need to spend a month in a country to really grasp it. 1 week to get settled and the next few weeks to see how life really is
We felt that feeling in Trieste. Moving there in July from the US 💚
You shoud check out Spain! Girona is a lovely city but has a town feel it it. Or Empordà, you could be close to the sea and be surrounded by nature and mountains and have a slower pace. :)
Try Sardinia, abs stunning, planning the move in a year. Im currently living in Cyprus 4 years in, im getting itchy feet.
Its tough for 6 months then you chill and relax into a new way of life. Getting the uk out of yr system takes time, but once you do, lifes good.
I wish you luck.
I’m from The Mumbles in Swansea, South Wales and it is a beautiful part of the world. The Gower has lots and lots of gorgeous beaches, friendly people, restaurants, coffee shops etc. Could be lovely with the boys enjoying the beach? ☺️
Perhaps checkout Spain! I lived in Barcelona for a year and loved it, and have heard great things about Valencia.
If cost of living is a consideration, BCN is an expensive option, rental costs are very high in the centre (partly due to all the tourists and "expats"). But I do agree Catalunya could be a good option, mountains and beaches aplenty.
It is very different to what we perceived. After being here now for nearly 22 years (moved over in 2002), the plan now is to have somewhere in the UK and somewhere still in Italy, so we have the best of both. We are near Lake Trasimeno on the Tuscany/Umbria border.
Are you with kids? What struggles did you face that prompted the decision to have somewhere back home again?
Keep going Michalaks love you guys ❤
Beautiful ❤🌺 The boys are happy but yes you certainly need more time.. a few days here and there is just a holiday 👌
Feel like Lagos in Portugal might suit you! Loved the video ❤
Love the fact that I've been watching your videos for long enough to know exactly what Stef was going to say his great idea in Piza was 😂😂
I watched you guys from when Gray was born for about 3/4 years and only just rediscovered your channel - I can't believe I ever stopped watching, so beautiful. Also since when was Rufus not a newborn
It sounds so good - I had an Aperol Spritz in a 1000 days! Great to see these kind of videos again guys. Italy is an interesting one, having lived in both the UK and Italy, I'll be curious to see what happens next :)
I think you’d prefer the south east of Italy near bari - more rural and just so so beautiful. I used to work for an Italian company and all the Italians said Pisa was the worst city in the whole of Italy.
Agree on the fact that Pisa is definitely not the best city in Italy, so damn touristic! Though I wouldn’t know about the south being the best place for the Michalaks… they seem such a creative bunch that the traditional south regions don’t seem to me to be the right fit for them. Though they do have the best beaches and “slow life mindset” in the country, imo.
I would suggest you check out Bologna, it’s very multicultural and open minded, has an alternative background in film and video arts, is THE crucial point of connections between North and Centre-South Italy and has so damn good food. Also, not the most prolific and famous in wine production.. so here you go, keeping the temptation away 😂
(I’m from Italy, by the way… from Bologna tbh, but I tried to be objective as much as possible)
I saw that shot sneak in at the end ;)
Unfortunately its expensive everywhere, taking the kids out of school for just a year is not wise, the grass isnt always greener but goid luck in your quest hope you find what you are looking for in life
Check out Ericeira in Portugal. Seaside town 30 mins outside Lisbon.
The moment on the beach at the end with Rufus pestering you is the parenting paradox in one scene.
Hello dear strangers, have you ever considered other countries as your adopted country? I have been to Estonia several times and I can only recommend you to visit this beautiful country. Before my first trip there, I knew nothing about it and had no idea what it could be like. The landscape is beautiful, the people are very welcoming and the weather is fantastic. In the summer it is wonderfully warm and sunny, but not as hot and bone-dry as in southern Europe. In addition, the country has flourished economically and is far ahead of some European countries in terms of living conditions. Maybe I can give you some inspiration with that. Anyway, I wish you lots of fun and luck in your search for a new home. Best regards from Germany
have you been there in winter time?😂
Not yet unfortunately.
I think it’s pretty cold with lots of snow. But I assume there’s not that much rain though like here in Germany or Britain.
winter are cold like -20 or more! and lost of snow . So you will have to shovel the snow be fore you go to work, might need to push your car uo the hill ( as its sliperry) and do this every day during winter! :) I'm sure Estonia gets rain too. And some times they do have rainny summers :)
Should visit Lavia and Lithunia!! :)
What about the south of France… or Florida?? 😆🥰we are in a similar place as a family. I love hearing how you guys are processing and making a decision.
Florida is crazy expensive now, insurance, property taxes, home values and other costs, crime going up and up, my home insurance increased 100% in 1 year even though no claims in 15 years. It's not the Florida everyone used to think of.
Try the "Brianza" area! Between Milan and Como Lake ❤
What about Bulgaria? It's cheaper than Italy or Spain and we have mountains and sea as well 😊
I've been a silent viewer for years and I just wanted to pop in here to suggest humble Wales! It's a lot cheaper than England and also calmer, people are relaxed and there's nature as well. Plus there's a magical town called Hay On Wye and Snowdonia. I moved over from Asia myself and love it!! Just thought I'd suggest something :)
im so used to 'influencer' content i thought the suitcase shot was an ad
Lots of funny lines. Great video!
Keep on searching, sure there is a place in Italy. Don't stop.
Me and moved to jersey 🇯🇪 the channel island 🏝 one year ago it so lovely here best thing ever done people are lovely and friendly
Beautiful!
Travelling (both for holidays and emigration) is so fulfilling and can truly change the course of your entire lives for generations even. The Michalaks well might be an Italian family in 100 years 😂
But it is really quite sad that everybody wants (needs?) to leave, myself included. There hasnt been much excitement or anything to look forward to in the UK in a long time. Everythings just... harder. I hope you make the right decisions for yourselves 🥰
When people say move to Scotland for example...we can't all move to Scotland. The infrastructure isn't there for everyone to relocate to one "better place", we'd strain the system and it wouldn't be the "better place" anymore. I guess , apart from throwing out the Uk government, we have a hell of a mess to clean up. So start in your own town and work out from there? Very hard to do when people are surviving not thriving, but I guess it takes a village .
I would suggest looking more into the lakes in northern Italy
Hey Stef & Hannah, just wanted to make myself available to show you around if you consider the emilia romagna area. Just transferred to modena for work 6 months ago and loving it!
Emilia-Romagna is the best!!
To me, it seems like sobriety is an important thing to consider in this journey. Will the allure of living in a sun-drenched Italian town make you want to drink more regularly and do you both feel you can maintain a healthy relationship with alcohol? Or will the stress of a foreign place make you want to reach for a drink? Be honest about what you want and need in terms of sobriety.
The UK also has a big drinking culture, so not saying this would be specific to Italy (or elsewhere in Europe), but consider the implications of the change of scene.
Can't see you guys in Italy but can definitely see you in Lisbon!
Portugal might be a better option ! 😊
Hey guys!! Omg i cant believe how big the boys are 😢 hannah stunning as always ❤ always wondered how you guys are doing!! Lots of love youre old and best cleaner 😅 jodie xx
Come to Kilifi , Kenya for a year. It's crazy beautiful. Coastal town. International school, and a mix of people. It's warm, and moves at a slower pace.
Ciao! Dovresti provare a venire a Como… credo che vi piacerebbe tanto vivere qui ❤
Hello, Italy grants now the Inpatriate Regime for freelancer as new residents. Only 10% of your income is taxed if you relocate in the south (30% in the north instead)
Loved this!
Always remember your why❤
At first i found the Rufus narrating cute but now it's feeling....creepy? Weird? I don't know. It's the scripted quality of it, him saying adult things no child would say. I do enjoy the vlogs though!
Cool, I’ll stop doing them :) x
Totally agree! It’s 100% something Steff would hate if it was another family vlog channel doing it!!
Totally agree, have seen some vlogs where kiddy narration was so appropriate. But it's quite regular. It's like the auditory torture of a kids choir featuring in every song by your fave band 😂. Still watch intently despite this small criticism.
Why did you change your mind about Italy. We’re thinking of moving to Italy and was interested in your story. And then you changed it to Portugal. Is there something we don’t know???
Any advice will be welcome 👍
He is too angry for Italy and doesn't know the country enough to adjust to it. For example in a bank holiday supermarkets are mostly open and he was angry he could not get food
Yeah, what a whiner, better he stay with those type in England.@@francescofilippi2824
Couldn’t wait until tomorrow😂 great work guys 😊
Love this!
I am not sure you'll ever get the feeling that you want to move to Italy. It's a very peculiar place... with a distinctive culture which is rather different from the Anglo-Saxon one. So... you're welcome, but be sure you do like it here before you take the plunge. An Italian who would like your family to be as happy as possible😊
What about Spain?
What is the EU visa process now like after Brexit for UK residents
A pain! I moved to France from the UK with my partner 5months ago (I'm French he is British) and getting a VISA is a real mess. The whole process is outsourced to a company called TLScontact. TLScontact is used by almost all countries in the Schengen zone. You can read the reviews, it says it all. They cancel my partner's account without notice bc he didn't book an appointment but there isn't any appointment available (we've been trying to get one for months). Not talking about the extortionate amount they ask for an appointment outside of their London office (paying doesn't mean that you secure a date though and still if you can't book an appointment within 10 days your account is deleted even if you paid for the out of hours/outside of london service!) No one has a clue what's going on. We ended up getting married in France to be able to apply for a family reunion visa and we had to get a lawyer here. Lawyer confirmed that borders are closed and EU is not approving Visas (legally they have to give visas to spouse of EU nationals so we just need to be patient and wait). After talking to a few expats we realised a lot of British are experiencing this since Brexit. Good thing is that Italy stopped working with TLScontact because of fraud issues within the company (you can read about it online). But regardless, we love it here in France! The rat race in London was killing us. And with hindsight, we would do it all over again just to get out of the UK.
Try Positano
adorable lovely brilliant amusing moving etc
Come to valencia! its the best city in Spain, super international, much cheaper than madrid or barcelona, on the coast, lots of green spaces, people are lovely.
How many days/months are you into this ‘1000 days sobriety’ ??
Check out San Polignano a Mare in Puglia!
I'd love to live in Italy for a couple of years but getting a work visa for Italy or even to stay for more than 90 days is nigh on impossible for non-EU citizens without lots of money.
What camera do you use?
Come to Mexico it’s not expensive and it’s beautiful all the time. And the food is delicious.
I'm really sorry that Grayson leaked your idea, mate. I just know that those people will one day look back at their photos with a sense of moral culpability. P.s, I think that scrutinising a young childs voiceover is creepy, and weird. X
Canary Islands(Lanzarote or Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) or Andalucía is really cheap
I just know you will fall in love with porto
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think Copenhagen would be so your vibe
For sure!
Canada? We get really cold winters and very hot summers but sunshine and blue skies most of the winter (in the prairies)! Hope you find the place you’re looking for. 🤍
❤❤❤❤
Go to Portugal! West coast🤩
Wow the photo at the very end is so inspiring 😅😆❤️
Were you guys in Viareggio? :)
I'm Italian and I can tell you that Italy can be very different from region to region. Unfortunately, foreign tourists only know a few places, there are also lesser-known but equally beautiful regions. If you need help, don't hesitate to ask.
Please list your favorite small cities/regions.
@@westwoodcoronado I live in Emilia Romagna, I was born and raised here and I like living here. In my opinion, the best places to live are the towns and cities of central and northern Italy. It is very difficult to make a list of the towns that I have visited and liked, the first that come to mind are: Camogli in Liguria, Alberobello in Puglia, Cefalù in Sicily, Spello in Umbria.
@@danieledallolio1126 Thank you for the list. I hope you are safe from the flooding in Emilia Romagna.
@@westwoodcoronado I'm safe, but the situation is very difficult a few km from me. Tomorrow my family and I are going to help.

Australia?
Apologies IF I’m wrong but my guess is that the title is click bait so I haven’t watched.
Dovete vedere altre regioni.. la Toscana è così turistica. Ti consiglio le Marche e l’Abruzzo
Just go to South East Asia.. make videos.. its cheaper too
Who leaked your leaning tower idea?! Hmmm so suspicious
What about Suffolk... Ummm yeah OK............
Madeira game over.
