I think you failed to mention Pass Time’s biggest issue: the game mode is transparently balanced around an assumption that there will be no more than 1 Engineer per team, but there’s literally no mechanism in place to actually enforce that.
It's really fun when you play in a chill server that's 50% Scouts, but if you get one full of tryhards who won't give up any ground it can be hellish. Still love the game tho. I will say that Pyro with the Dragon's Fury and the jetpack is a surprisingly viable choice. Organizing both teams to get the 'Tune Merasmus's TV' Achievement was like that Barbie movie where all the princesses have to stand on specific magical tiles, except they can't communicate and it's TF2 so they randomly murder each other for the funnies.
Here's how my usual round of pass time looks like: Each team has 2 engineers and mainly Scouts. The 2 Scout swarms fight for the ball, the winner runs into the losers sentry nest and dies, repeat.
Yeah, if you are looking for more info on the development of it, one of the senior designers at Bethesda has a page regarding passtime specifically. Austin T House worked on TF2 for pass time, Fallout 76, Starfield, Wolfenstein, Doom, and even a Portal Mod called Portals through time. His website is here:www.austinthouse.com/team-fortress-2-pass-time.html
Why it failed: 1. Convoluted 2. Requires high amounts of teamwork 3. Scout dominates, slower classes fail 4. Dealing with more than 2 engineers is pain 5. No class limits, so stalemates all the time 6. Even the power classes get marked for death when carrying the jack, despite being really slow while doing so. This actively discourages non-scouts from actually experiencing the gamemode, so scouts have a monopoly over jacks Though, the balance isnt all bad. Medic can be useful when the team has good powerclasses, heavy completely decimates cocky scouts, really good at defense, spy can get key picks, bully engineers and fly around the map with jump pads, sniper is sniper and exploits enormous sightlines, and pyro is pyro i guess The reason payload race failed was not because of teamwork, but because a team cant defend and attack at the same time, no other gamemode provides 2 objectives like that, except ctf
Great synopsis. I’ve found in my games that its been very one sided. Nobody play anything other than scout or engineer. The maps aren’t designed for other classes with the exception of soldier. Doesn’t really matter since people only play scout but the occasional soldier wrecks.
Man, it was so damn fun when it was released. I also remember once making the whole server go all friendly. I feel like the gamemode really should have been worked on more, because it was perhaps even more adrenaline-inducing and its map designs were just phenomenal. The maps really felt fleshed out and allowed for plethora of places to go through, something that in my opinion kinda lacks from many other Team Fortress 2 maps.
Genuinely one of the most fun modes in the game. Something funny I noticed the times I’ve played it is often no one goes engineer. Almost as if everyone knows it makes the game suck and just chooses not to play him out of respect for everyone in the server
There is a community version of passtime with its own maps, class restrictions and rulesets that turns the game into something like rocket league but on tf2, u should check it out, its called 4v4 passtime
Passtime is less like ctf because it’s already exist and would be surprised to find that Passtime originated from unreal tournament 2004 gamemode called bombing run
oh and fun fact the bonus goal opens up after you pass to a teammate enough times from mid range or once from long range or after intercepting 4 throws
Pass time was one of those failed "football" gamemodes added when all devs suddenly went "football-crazy". Seriously, even Warframe has it's own mode like that called "Lunaro". It's almost like it was some sort of trend amongst devs, that consumers didn't know about.
yo bro its pretty cool to see how many subscribers you have now, since we recorded that one g mod video and that weird podcast itd be coolto play again sometime since im not a twelve year old anymore its prtty cool👍
1:30 I'm surprised you mentioned this niche map from TFC since it doesn't resemble passtime all that much You know what gamemode does resemble passtime? Bombing run from Unreal Tournament series!(and maybe other games idk). The rules are way more similar between these two then TFC map. So in Bombing run, maps are also huge although maps are usually more open but sniper rifles are rare in UT. And just like in passtime, if you take the ball or someone passes it to you, you lose your guns and can only throw or pass ball. One major difference is that you get more points if you do slam dunks, aka you hold the ball and JUMP into the gate. One big difference is that in bombing run all players get a device that let you do short teleports via shooting a disc projectile, making the gamemode so much faster. Also another major difference is that UT doesn't have classes. It has tons of guns that can resemble Tf2 classes but all ppl can carry all guns at the same time. So that's why I'd argue this gamemode didn't catch on is because it's just too niche. It's a gamemode for boomer shooter fans who are also fans of bombing run gamemode, that's a niche audience in an already niche audience! 😅 Plus Tf2 just has different formula to UT, Tf2 has classes which sometimes means you may lose to certain class due to poor matchup while UT was all about skill of aiming, juking n bhopping. What's really surprising is that even comp players didn't pick it up, I think there were a couple of tournaments(or maybe just one) that were hosted aaaaaaand... That's it. You'd think comp players would love this, just insert your own balance changes like banning Engy and it sounds like another version of 5CP but it's rugby 😂. So yeah kinda shame this gamemode didn't took off, but then again tons of other gamemodes that are closer to Tf2 also didn't take off so I don't feel too bad about it
Passtime was fun on a server that I played. Maybe if the maps were made differently and had more goals it would force the engineers to spread their sentries thus requering less teamwork to score a goal.
Before MYM i played plenty of passtime as well as mannpower, there was always a server full, and it was fun as hell. Now i can never find a match, its Valve's fault for snuffing this gamemode from the standart search category, if all gamemodes were ticked by default we would see much more active alternative gamemodes.
How can Bad Robot Productions own the concept for this game mode when Epic Games did it in 2002 in Unreal Championship with "bombing run"? The goal assets in PassTime are practically identical to those used in UT2K4, btw
They own the gamemode PASStime, they drew up the concept. Whether they were the original creators or not they came to TF2 and developed it witrh Escalation, copyright is a weird world. I don't know the specific people at Bad Robot who claimed to have created the concept but it's something that i'm sure you can find out with a lawyer and enough money. Though I don't think any party cares enough to make a fuss.
That looks like bombing run from ut2k4, which was an ok idea but the maps that shipped with it were gigantic and not suited for 4v4 or 5v5. A small map would have been great, but the ootb ones were trash.
There are a couple Esports PASS Time communities. 4v4 PASS Time is the best but there is also PASS Time Federation (Prolander) and whatever RGL is doing.
If you just use the matchmaking browser and only select passtime maps you’ll find a game after a couple minutes. It might have a small number of people at the start but if you stick with it you can find yourself playing a full fun match after around 15-30 minutes like I had.
Have I played Passtime?
[Looks ate the beta participation medal.]
Yes? Though like Mannpower, my old computer could not deal with it for long.

rugby with guns. definitely a gem that went forgotten
Yeah its really fun!
I find it funny that most people find out PASStime exists because they see the "Pass to me!" option when using voice commands not working
doesnt work in passtime either because every fresh install scouts gotta run into a sentry with the ball

If there is an engineer with a mini sentry on a team with the worlds worst players the game will grind to a halt

I wish there could be more passtime maps. I had no idea a completely different company developed the game mode.
