i miss the times when TF2 servers were really experimental when it came to gamemodes and maps, it felt like a whole new experience from server to server before eventually everything got consolidated into the monotony of 24/7 capture the flag, instant respawn dustbowl, and the occasional trade map

Vanilla randomizer was my absolute favorite gamemode back in the day. then it got overtaken by x10 and x100 randomizer servers which took away most of the fun. the main draw was having all these unique loadout and playstyle opportunities which existed within the framework of the actual game. but people took a sniff of that x10 coke and never looked back.

There is so much nostalgia feeling when you notice many servers/gamemodes are left for dead nowadays. I've been playing TF2 for 15 years and gamemodes like Prop Hunt/Balloon Race (I spent so many hours on it)/Parkour Fortress/Fort Wars/Smash Fortress were so fun to play with players. If I could share more gamemodes that seem dead, I'd say :
    - TF2Ware (a Wario Ware style gamemode with ton of minigames). I haven't found a server with lot of players in a while, last time I played we were 30 players and it was pure chaos
    - Advanced Weaponizer. This one is definitely dead I think, it was basic TF2 but with custom weapons (like the TF2 Classic gamemode). It was made by the same person who did Parkour Fortress
    - Super Zombie Fortress. Also made by the same person who did Parkour Fortress, I haven't checked if a server with that gamemode still exist. Most of the time it was escape maps and we had to pickup the guns on tables, we had a Heavy Tank at the final part. A fun take on Zombie gamemodes.
    - Spycrab. On that one we had Spies locked on Spycrab pose and they had to travel an arena while some Huntsman Snipers try to take them down. I don't know if a server still exist.
    - Achievement Turbo. That's not a particular gamemode but if ANYONE remember that GamingDeluxe server, that would be surprising. That 32-slot server used to be full everyday from 2009 to like 2014 (or beyond), the map was super fun to explore and to chill with other players.
    - "Shenanigans". Basically a Mario Kart map, 100% crits and infinite ammo. Also make me wondering if Mario servers are still popular.
    - Breakfloor. It was a small map where the middle area was a cubic breakable floor. Each Scout team had to eliminate everyone, highly sure nobody play that map anymore.

Played almost all of these gamemodes back in the day when they were still popular (except smash fortress and stop the tank). Even spun up a fortwars server once and got a fair few people playing on it. Hosting balloon race is probably the easiest since it's all built into the map rather than an actual gamemode implemented as a sourcemod. Cool to see someone shed light on these lost community efforts.

Stop that Tank was a very fun gamemode, although I never heard of the PLR version, I only played the normal payload version of it which had normal humans vs robots with the same concept of stopping a tank. Except when the tank is destroyed 1 random player becomes a giant robot to carry a bomb to the payload point like in MVM. Anyone can deliver the bomb even if the giant robot dies.
    Was a blast (literally)

    @yoshifan2334 Год назад +28

Point about stop that tank is that it’s originally a regular payload game mode, not a PLR game mode.
It worked similar, but with the tank having an actual hp bar scaling with server size (but no slowing down on hit), regaining hp at checkpoints, and upon destruction, would drop money piles which gave red crits for a bit to make space before a giant spawned for BLU, wherein the BLU team could then attempt to cap a carried bomb as usual, much more similarly to MVM

Some info on tower defense. Servers still run the gamemode, thankfully, but there's more than likely never going to be any new maps for it unless someone rebuilds the whole mode in vscript(I know, I tried making a map myself). People, not even the main dev, couldn't properly get the waves to work, hence why some of the servers only run firstone. Blackwonder is iirc the only one that has all four maps, that being firstone, the updated version of rampant, swampy, and cavern(which I beta tested many many years ago). It's a fun gamemode that I very much hope gets redone in the future so we can finally get some new maps.
Edit: One nice thing about TD is that all of the maps can be played and beaten solo.
Edit 2: I adore fort wars but I’ve never been able to play in it soooo long.

In my opinion the greatest TF2 game mode that ever existed was TF2 Zombies Redux. This wasn't the zombies mode where it was medics versus engineers, this was a fully-fledged game mode with complexity builds and custom-made maps. The zombie team composed of scouts, spies, and heavies, all limited to melee. The survivor team was all other classes, though engineers were limited to minis and lv1 sentries that could not be refilled and would slowly lose ammo until fully drained and would self detonate at that point. This was to prevent easy turtling.
There became some really fascinating strategies. For instance the scout was the ranged class, do to possessing the original sandman and being allowed the flying guillotine. The spy had his entire kit besides the revolvers, and due to lack of respawns was a eminent threat. The heavy could use the steak sandvich and any melee, but also would frequently use the fists of steel to become the god of tanking for the other zombies.
This combined with the interesting maps made for the mode led to this becoming more fun for me than the actual game until it eventually died off.

Two forgotten game modes I remember for some reason that I played SUPER SUPER early into playing TF2:
    1) Spy Crab(?): kind of like deathrun, but there was a team of Spy Crabs trying to reach the end of the map while a team of Snipers tried to kill them.
    2) TF2Kart: Mario Kart, but TF2. I was never able to play this mode on a full server. I’ve wanted to bring this mode back in some form now that Valve has added VScripting to the game, but I lack the knowledge and know-how of VScripts and very little about TF2 Mapping to do it at this point in time.
Before anybody asks if I have any files related to these modes, I sadly do not. I had TF2’s files saved originally on my old laptop’s hard drive, which destroyed itself because it was cheap and unable to handle the constant work I was putting it through. I wasn’t able to recover any files on that old PC, meaning the files I had for these modes are gone… :/

I miss the old Zombie Fortress. The current brand is some weird deathrun with 5 million HP zombies... I don't understand it.
The old one had Scout, Heavy, and Spy be melee-locked zombies and the rest of the classes would either hold out for a time or get to an extract. A lot of servers also let each side choose a perk that could really shake up the gameplay. Very fun, with a lot of inventive and even creepy atmospheric maps.
The Hidden was even better in GMod I'd argue. Just about as hard to find a server there as well.

ad_hunted, which is the VIP gamemode from TFC recreated in TF2
crabmod, a thrilling tale of spycrabs attempting to migrate under the threat of poachers
a bizarre mode back when the sandman used to do full stuns at all ranges in which the maps contained a death pit (like frontier's final point). scouts would have infinite double jumps and sandman balls would recharge near instantly, and the goal was to hit other scouts with sandman balls to cause them to drop into the death pit. i don't know if there is a name for this mode or if it was even a real mode, the only evidence i have of its existence is in an old evildaedalus video called "More scraps."

I'm pretty sure the majority of my TF2 playtime is from playing a Zombies Community Server where one player was randomly selected to be the zombie at the start of a round and could only melee. God the adrenaline when being the last person alive, playing as a Scout with the Soda Popper, jumping across rooftops as the horde of players both tried to catch you and cut you off. Man it was a lot of fun. It was surprisingly balanced too, with the Caber letting you jump up to high places or surprise drop on nests, blow up sentries, the fists of steel helping to tank and break engi nests, and if the sandman ball hit someone it'd mark them and then a second hit while marked would zombify them.
I wonder if it's still around.

You could see all the servers, and you could drop in or out of any of them that looked interesting. You could look for any map you want and it'd probably be there.

I used to play the crap out of the hidden/stalker on garry's mod, on it's own standalone sourcemod and also on TF2.
Probably have racked around 500h on it alone.
I think it's a very fun game to play with your friends if you're all new to it.
But its problem is that once an exceptionally good player joins the game, it becomes super unfun for everyone.
The stalker just starts destroying people, having them resort to stalling playstyles like sitting in the corner and spamming weapons to keep the hidden from killing them.
The pick system based on damage dealt, or whomever killed the stalker was a problem too.
The best player was able to kill the hidden nearly each time, which then just resorts to one single player being the hidden every 2nd round.
It was fun to play as hidden while it lasted and it felt amazing taking out a whole team of players.
But I know how boring it becomes being the one against the spy.
