Before then, put simply, a country had to have enough gold in its reserves to equal the amount of money it made available via its banking system. It is worth a dollar because they say it is worth a dollar. The Fed also made it clear it could not/ would not be audited ( checked ) so why would they keep that gold when they could trade it across the worlds for their own ends ? The Fed also held other country's gold on their behalf, and those countries now want it to be returned, physically as gold, so they can do with it what they wish. I was told by someone that lives in the area that if someone tried to rob Fort Knox they would let them in the building then lock the doors and seal them inside. 😮
I was stationed at Fort Knox in the late 50s and early 60s. Our duty was to protect the building and the gold and other select objects. It was impossible then and probably impossible now for anyone to penetrate the building.
my grandfather worked on an upgrade in the late forties. He claimed that it is capable of being flooded with water. The part he claimed to have worked on were the guard posts or machine gun posts on the corners of the building.

I was stationed at Fort Knox, Ky in the 70s and 80s. The gold depository is not on Ft Knox. It is just outside the the installation's fence line. However, when I was stationed there, a rotating Infantry company had the mission as a reaction force should it ever be attacked.
