David Byron - one of my alltime favorite singers because of his incredible verstaility. There are people who do not like this song because of the vocals. But for me it is one reason why I love it so much. It makes this song so unique.

I agree, this song wouldn't be the same without those vocals. But they do also sound kinda funny to me! 😄

A vastly underrated song, its always been my fav Uriah Heep song. I'm sure Mr Mercury heard this in his pre-Queen days.

I can’t believe the whole time growing up that no one said to me “ oh if you like Queen and prog rock maybe you should try Uriah Heep”. Not even so much this song but Demons and Wizards and Magicians Bitthday.

    Welcome to Uriah Heep :)
Heavy both in tone and emotion, fun, groovy. All in one.

I saw Heep in 1972 in Salisbury. This was fresh after they did a US tour. They apparently brought the US rig (PA) with them, as larger PAs were not common in the UK at that time. Their support act was a solo singer/songwriter (Mike Maran). When Heep were due on we were all asked to 'come up to the stage'. They started with Bird of Prey, and we were blasted backwards! Apparently the best place to hear the singer was in the Guildhall square, about 1/2 mile away! This studio recording, though good, does not do justice to the power of the song. They still sometimes do this song live (although Mick Box, the founder and guitarist, is the only person left from this recording).

This seems to foreshadow Queen's operatic harmony vocals. This track is really cool (and unconsciously comical at the same time). 'Salisbury' is one of my favourite Heep albums.

Great to see a reaction to this song, and such a positive one, too!
    😀👍
I've always liked it myself, since hearing it for the first time 30+ years ago, but also because it has a bit of a comical element to it, mostly because of the vocals and their extreme vibrato in the verses and stuff like that 😊
Have a very happy Easter, Justin and family and viewership! 😀👍

'Ole Audiophile to JustJP: I may be repeating here but the bass player & the drummer from this act helped guitarist Randy Rhodes resurrect Ozzy Osbourne's career from just after he got the axe from Black Sabbath. They stayed together up & through Live & Loud minus the deceased Randy Rhodes of course which this recording now no longer exists as originally rendered (I nabbed an original copy of the 5.1 concert DVD before the hub-bub.) Now the organist, a Ken Hensley, escaped his native land to the east coast of the U.S. when he joined up with a southern rock act named Blackfoot for two albums. Thanx.

Interesting info! Uriah Heep had also given Rush the opportunity to open for them during a US tour in the early 70's, which was Rush's first one and only two weeks after Neil Peart had joined the band 🙂

@@mightyV444 Yeah, I was there then. Rush/Manfred Mann's Earth Band & Uriah heep. Cleveland Ohio. Not one word of Neil's replacement of the original Rush drummer John Rutsey was mentioned before the show. There were no questions after for obvious reasons. Rush never skipped a beat.

Listening to this, nearly 50 years later , I’m glad I was in the former.
    Still don’t ‘get it’

I thought you'd enjoy that one. I think there's plenty more Uriah Heep you'll enjoy in time to come, too. (Even the newer stuff, which some people turn their noses up for not being what they once were. They grew up. It's not the worst thing ever, growing up.)
You might also enjoy the unrelated *Moses on a Snail* ruclips.net/video/T7fxZ3ia1S4/видео.html
(Not by Uriah Heep. The album with the face covered in cobwebs is still one of the places you could go.)
(It's by *Robert Pollard* . Part of the solo projects. It's all sort-of GBV. This and the ten other bands.)

This is a super album all round...... Heep's first 7 albums are all choice. Great riffing and arrangements..... Byron, Kerslake, Hensley and Thain all sadly missed.... Just wait until you hear High Priestess JP..... that's my fave off the album.

I will see Uriah Heep in Vienna on April the first together with Saxon and Judas Priest. This song will not be on the setlist, but I have seen it a couple of times in previous Heep gigs. A very diverse album that one, I believe you would also enjoy everything else there. The ooh-aahs are a trademark of Heep!

I can see why the vocals might be problematic for some, but this is what set Heep apart from other heavy bands of the time. Let us not forget that Rolling Stone reviewed their debut with 'If this band makes it, I'll commit suicide' which would have been a great incentive for many to rush out and make a purchase. Heep are still going but unfortunately so are Rolling Stone and I could care less about the writer. I liked it!

This song always makes me think of the Darkness - I believe in a thing called love. I love this album, especially the title track but I'm not sure about this one. Almost seems like a parody of heavy rock at that time - a bit like Spinal Tap.

      Darkness?
I think you may have it the other way round.
When I hear Darkness I think of legendary group"Uriah Heep" (formed in 1969)
This Uriah Heep track came out before the Darkness(formed in 1980?) even existed😢

I find David Byron's lead vocals disturbing and ugly when it goes off the rails. Musically, when it speeds up, it reminds me a bit of what Iron Maiden would do ten years later! Frankly, it's far from being a Uriah Heep song that I enjoy.

I just can't believe how cringingly embarrassing that was. The bland tune, bad enough, but the appalling vocal(s), arrrrghhh. How can I ever unhear them.... These guys are just so hit and miss. There's snippets of crackin' stuff in their canon, and then they come up with this. So, so bad. It stopped playing about 10 mins ago now, and my skin's still crawling.... Simply awful.
