I highly recommend having kids watch kids show but in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. That’s how I learned English from an early age and I was always ahead of my classes.
Kids aboard languages way faster than adults so if you show them only shows in Spanish they pick up the language extremely fast.
As a smut audiobook consumer, this episode was so entertaining 😂

Hello, just an FYI - the word Gaelic has two pronunciations and is two different languages.
Gaelic (pronounced Gay-Lick) is Irish
Gaeiluc (pronounced Gah-lick) is Scottish.
The languages are similar and share a lot of roots but they as re two distinct languages. 💜

As a life long book nerd I am so thankful for what tik tok has done for reading I feel like it has brought so much community to readers. I had my little sister read all of the Sarah J Maas books and we sit and talk on the phone about books for literal hours
😭 spicy scenes in audiobooks can be a lil intense but tbh its how i consume most books these days so i can get through all my TBR lol

Also I read Fourth Wing a couple of weeks ago while I was on medical leave post surgery at the suggestion of fellow librarians. I binged it in like 4 hours. Sooo good. Romance stuff isn't usually my jam but I was so invested.
I was diagnosed with Dyslexia in elementary school so I never took a Spanish class, they would go to Spanish and I would go to an intensive reading class and that helped so much! But when I got to high school I needed a language so I took ASL because it was only offered to students with disabilities! And I loved it! Definitely look into learning ASL. Start with the alphabet, then move to finger spelling, and definitely don’t forget about learning numbers (it’s different in ASL)!

As a person who followed the ACOTAR to contemporary romance to dark romance to monster romance pipeline I find it so hilarious that Becky refers to The Love Hypothesis as having gratuitous sex scenes and so spicy because there is one sex scene. The rest is all build up 😂. To be fair I love it and it’s so cute and easy to read but, if you want gratuitous spice… I’ve got better recs.
Right!? I listened to it in true podcast form as I was driving and literally yelled at my car that that book was like the least spicy of spicy trending books I’ve read. Of my documented 106 I’ve read this year, 105 were probably all spicier than that 😂😂

14:35 I feel seen, lmao, I am VERY dyslexic and I took ASL instead of Spanish (or another spoken foreign language) in high school, and while I'm sure it was easier for me, I can 110% tell you whenever I had to fingerspell a word I royally fucked it up. The dyslexia will always get you 💀💀

Fantasy book rec from me is Bitter Medicine by Mia Tsai! It incorporates Taiwanese folklore and fantasy elements and is sooo good.
Love the book chat! This is a great episode. A little clarification on some pronunciations; words derived from Scots Gaelic are said Gah-lick whereas words from Irish Gaelic are said like Gay-lick.

I totally feel Matt @ the 14:00 mark. I'm learning Mandarin and watch a lot of shows. One was a variety show about a group of celebs working on a small farm. So much convo was about cooking/animals/hobbies/etc and I felt like i was nailing it. Then i tried to watch a show about musical theatre and was completely lost when judges gave notes.
Me: "They're saying something about singing a song and that's as much as I'm grasping 😅"

RAINIE! I graduated *several* years before you, but ASL was my absolute favorite class at Tufts. I wish they had more than 3 semesters, and I still regret not finding a way to keep practicing/using it after I graduated. But it's never too late to learn--lifelong learning woohoo

As someone who has learnt multiple languages: You don't have to be particularly smart to learn a new language. Everyone can do it, but the key is lots of exposure, not classroom instruction.
You need to listen to a lot of native audio to be able to perceive all of the sounds of your target language, and reading is a great way to broaden your vocabulary. Having the background knowledge of how sentences are structured, how verbs are conjugated etc. definitely helps but the crucial part happens without you even noticing: your brain is constantly analysing the patterns and with enough exposure, you'll internalise the "rules" and be able to apply them without the need to consciously think about them. You can achieve native-like fluency in any language. Heck, my native language isn't even my primary language anymore.
There was a short story collection in the Scythe series called Gleanings that came out in November last year, and one of the stories was about an art class taught by someone who grew up in the time before they solved death. Gleanings had stories from various points and perspectives in the world, and if you love the series, I'd recommend it! As for my favourite smutty book, I can't narrow it done more then anything by Katee Robert. The Dark Olympus series is really big right now, and so good!
I love Scytheeee omg. Neal Shusterman is pretty popular but I hear more people talk about Unwind than the Scythe trilogy. I was happy to hear her talk about it 🥰

I really enjoyed Ana Huang Twisted Series. You can read each book independently, and in any order. But I highly recommend reading them in order as there are connections between the plot and characters which are fun to read about with the proper context. The spice in the books is really good. And if you listen to the audio books they are really good, the voices are really nice and pretty steamy themselves.

Also I listen to the audio book and I agree with Becky that the smut came out of nowhere. I like to listen to audiobooks while I drive. I also like to drive with my windows downs. The smut happen as soon as I came to a stop light and never have I rolled my windows up sooo fast so I couldn’t be judged by the homeless man that started walking towards me. 😅😂😅😂
