Kiper has been right a hell of a lot, though. He was way higher on Josh Allen than anyone, higher on Herbert than anyone and Mahomes as well. Nobody had Richard Sherman written down as a stud, which is why he went fifth round. Hilariously enough, the Colts situation ended up proving Kiper right, as Trev Albert had a short, ineffective career marred with injuries. Dilfer eventually won a Super Bowl and had a decent career

"Who is Mel Kiper, anyway? He doesn't know as much as my next door neighbor, a postman." -- Bill Tobin, 1994. One of my favorite quotes regarding Kiper and cracks me up every time.
Putting the top draft picks on a wall, randomly throwing darts blindfolded at the wall and one would probably have a higher % of accuracy than going with Kipper’s picks.
Yeah, Mel's only talent is as a self-promoter. Which in itself is akin to ego masturbation. So blame the NFL for putting a masturbator on TV every year.
I remember talking to a friend during the draft (who didn't think Manziel should be #1 but thought he was sliding too far). He said maybe this will humble Manziel and he will come in and work hard. Manziel gets picked, comes onstage and does his money sign. My friend: "oh boy...he's gonna be bad...really bad"

Manzel ,what a joke , I remember him getting hit and flying ten feet through the air curled up in a ball. The funniest thing I 've ever seen .I wish I could find the footage ,I think it was a Steelers game.
Jon Gruden also had a hard on for Manziel and even told the Raiders if they drafted him and not Carr he would've coached them sooner than he did. Of course Gruden is now out as a coach and the Raiders are better without him.
My high school guidance counselor did me a grand disservice by not pointing me to a profession where I could constantly be wrong and get paid millions.
Mel Kiper is a pompous self-appointed expert who believes if an NFL team doesn't pick who he wanted them to, then that team obviously picked someone else just to spite him. Mel Kiper is that hung up on himself. Mel's ego is equally large and fragile. There's nothing funnier than when someone calls out Mel Kiper on all his bluster.
Only 3 minutes?? the "who the hell is Mell Kiper" part of this video pretty much sums it up...he should have his own tarot card/palm reading shop on the boardwalk because he about that useful.
There's a video of him telling Skip Bayless that Manziel shouldn't be in the top 25. With the Cam Newton analysis, I don't know what he was smoking. Cam Newton put Auburn on his back!
@@playablue I mean he did have some potential that we didn't see but unfortunately he had the severe injury and there's just no way to know whether or not he was going to get better. There were questions about Bridgewater's game before the injury and whether or not he was going to take that next step. Maybe he would have we just don't know
As a New York Jets fan, I remember 1989 when he practically had a stroke on the air when the Jets picked Jeff Lageman over Hart Lee Dykes. The one time the Jets get one right and Kiper was acting like a pompous Mr Know it All.
In Kiper’s defense, based on the info they had at the time, he was justified in calling Sherman an average 5th round pick. There was a reason he didn’t stick at WR in college and there’s a reason why he fell to the 5th round at CB. Obviously Sherman put in a ton of work and took off really from his sophomore year in Seattle, but clearly 31 teams agreed with Mel on the grading for Sherman at that time
AYOO ngl Lamar Jackson at WR would be a hack though 😂 you could run Julian Edelman trick plays and have him throw off a screen pass 😮 or run it in wildcat sweeps or even just be a deep threat
imagine when NFL GM's lived in the same neighborhoods as postmen lol. today NFL GM's live in the same neighborhoods as Fortune 500 CEO's and postmen live in the same neighborhoods as cashiers
I knew that Manziel was a waste of money before he even announced he was gonna enter the draft. Maybe ESPN should give me a million dollars to talk about the draft instead of Mel
If Richard Sherman wasn't regarded as a 5th round pick, then 32 teams had a chance to draft him. earlier but that is what he was. He was a converted player that got toasted early in his career. Most college players are only good at that level. They have a chance to get better once they get in the hands of better coaching, a professional weight room etc. He made himself into a HOF player. Few players in the history of the league are HOF players coming out of college including every quarterback in the HOF with maybe Dan Marino being the exception. Mel is a media guy but GMs and scouts draft on traits and they are often wrong too.
Johnny could've been a slightly more athletic Jake Plummer, if he was serious about football. His ability was only as real as his focus. He focused on celebrity over the game.
It just goes to show the Mel knows absolutely nothing about football. I believe that Mel gets a kickback from the players agent for over hyping a player and mentioning their name on ESPN.
For the same reason that they have several others just like him , they are popular with the public and they say outrageous things from time to time and it creates publicity. Mel has no credibility whatsoever in NFL circles, as Bill pointed out he has never played the game , coached at any level and has never held any position in scouting for a professional football team. He is a media icon and as this video showed he has missed on many occasions and in reality if he was a GM he would have been fired multiple times for his failures in the draft .

I can understand why kipper thought Manuel would be great. If he actually applied himself and he was actually willing to do what needed done to play for the NFL he would've been great. But he had a chip on his shoulder, and he didn't care.
I wonder if the NFL recruiting staff look at Kiper's picks just so they know who to avoid.

Jimmy Clausen... good god what a flashback
Coming to Notre Dame he was the highest ranking QB in his class, but never really reached elite status at ND
that's exactly what I remember, Kiper had a raging boner for Jimmy Clausen
Nailed that Manziel pick...eats drinks football 365 days a year. Clearly Mel doesn't do his homework. Unless he meant drinks 365
Actually, I think Manziel did eat and drink football 24/7 as long as the football came with a side of bar food, and was filled with vodka.
