The takeaway from this interview is that learn your strength at a young age and take advantage of the weaknesses of the other competition. Work hard till you can't anymore.
If you took Pippen from the bulls and had him play with Barkley there is a good chance everyone would say Barkley was the best ever to play the game. In his prime Barkley was on a terrible team, in Phoenix when he had a good team he had a freak injury. He won MVP that year but injured his shooting arm diving for a rebound.
Funny thing about that, I followed CB closely in those days - it was a BIG DEAL when Barkley didn't make that 84 team. It wasn't just something that happened and no one noticed. Didn't make sense to anyone.
I'm sure Bobby Knight was a jerk... But after reading accounts from some of the other guys, like Chris Mullin, Vern Fleming, and Jon Koncak, Barkley had a bit of an attitude problem (not hard to imagine) during the Olympic tryouts and constantly tested Knight's authority. Apparently they exchanged words almost every practice and Vern Fleming said that Barkley would always find some little comment to make Knight angry. Even though I'm sure he was one of the best players there, It's really not unreasonable for the coach to cut a player in that situation, if he didn't get along with him.
If you were a coach and cut Barkley (or MJ for that matter) and they go on to become a dominant NBA player, it would mean you were a fool. It means coaches ego was more important than success.
@@CornellD.Cavendish One player with a bad attitude can have a huge negative effect on the entire team, which is the last thing you want heading into the Olympics. According to Vern Fleming, Barkley and Knight got into an argument every single practice: Here's a quote from Fleming: "Before every meeting, we rushed to the meeting place so we could get a front-row seat to Barkley and coach Knight going at it. Charles would say some things that pissed him off. Charles told him, “Let me and you go in that closet and see who walks out...” If that's true, then I would expect most coaches to make the exact same decision that Knight made. Yes Knight was a jerk, but he also knew what he was doing. They won the gold medal that year, by the way.
Straight up, I was attracted to Barkley back in the day because he was thick and had beautiful skin😂 When I first saw him I was like "he has nice legs and a nice behind." He stood out from the string beans!
@bobbullethalf He was attending Auburn University in the 80's. I'm pretty sure he cable TV and ESPN at Auburn. And I'm sure he watched the Carolina/Georgetown national championship game like the rest of us. Charles Barkley knew about MJ before he got to the Olympic trials.
Barkley was a beast. One of the best players I’ve ever seen.

Big ass gonna win every time

@ if you think Barkley has a bad attitude then i would hate to hear your thoughts on Jordan, Kobe, Shaq, Iversom, or Wilt.

Bobby Knight said that MJ was the GOAT before he even got to the NBA.
Still lying about his height.
In 1984 how does Charles not know who MJ is?
They met and got to know each other during the Olympic trials.
You live in Alabama, all you had was two television stations back then.
