@@zarathustraspeaks7586 Adam Was actually pretty rich, Danny was already a very successful studio musician as well as being in like 5 bands, maynard was the only one who was really kinda floating around. Not sure about Paul either.
The way they cut back from the intensity in the 3rd verse so we can focus on the lyrics that captures the message of the song is pure genius. This song is the example that they started doing this from their early days. Vicarious is the pinnacle of this technique i think with the line 'vicariously i live when the whole world dies, much better you than i' ehich like sums up the whole song.
This one of TOOLs legitimate extremely heavy songs.. But with TOOL how heavy they make a song honestly doesn't matter...they are at heart always true too themselves..never sold out
Heavy this track is, but that's just what served this song. I don't estimate that that particular quality of music, being "heavy" is ever their goal. They let songs develop into whatever they need to be. Often they do develop very "heavy" sections. That's real art.
@Brian Fleming l edited my post to hopefully better reflect what l was trying to say. My use of the word "quality" about song sounds meant in terms of aspect: heavy, soft, smooth, rough, clear, distorted, and so on. I did NOT intend to have the word convey a lack of excellence. Tool is amazing art, and l am a fan. Re-reading what l initially wrote, l can see how l arranged the sentence in a way that could easily lead a reader to a different conclusion than was intended. Hopefully, it now reads clearer to the idea l am trying to convey. Thanks for the point out! 👉

In my opinion, people who boo really good opening acts (because, Monster Magnet kicks ass) should get what Maynard sings in this song. So, what if they aren't who you came to see!! Good music is still good music. Heard Uriah Heap open for Judas Priest recently, and actually enjoyed their set more than Priest's (though Priest still kicked ass, of course).
People are ignorant. I saw them in Phoenix at some small ballroom, standing room only, in '98 with the Melvins. Of course nobody there knew who the Melvins were except me and a handful of crowd gatherers. So they started booing the Melvins off stage, and the Melvins reiterated by playing 4 more of their extra long songs. Haha. Buzz showed THEM booers. Then the crowd cheered when Buzz came out to do a few songs with TOOL. I look back at the crowd like wtf, you were just booing this dude off the stage a minute ago. Fuckin bipolar Tool fans smh. EPIC FUCKING SHOW THOUGH! Never forget it. Maynard came out wearing a 3 piece suit at the start of the set & towards the end he's down to his tighty whiteies, squat position to the floor, facing the back wall. Probably trippin balls lol
