as a huge fan of the original, this song is just seminal. I don't usually like rewrites but this is an exception. the original writer- Jimmy Webb- blessed this and helped with the writing. the song echos the orignal beautifully. this one is a crushingly powerful performance.
That's Amanda Shires' (funky sunglasses) husband Jason Isbell, blues slide guitarist, and Brandi Carlile (red suit)'s longtime band members Phil and Tim Hanseroth :)
Beautifully Sung and very cleverly rewritten words so that the song they are actually singing is Highwoman and not the original Highwayman. I just hope they come to London and that C2C get them booked for March 2020.
Hi Chris, My name is Dani Grande and I work for ABC News. My team is interested in licensing this video from you. Can you please email me at dani.k.grande@abc.com to discuss further? Thanks!
Who is the Priestess they refer to that sings at the end? I am finding no reference. I would hate such a gorgeous song to have a whole verse with no historical reference. If so, that last verse may need a re-write. TThis piece is so gorgeous. I love it. This is a fan speaking. I loved the original, and this one made me cry at least 5 times in two days. And then I started researching. With all the great and real stories women have endured, if there are wasted lyrics, let's honor some real female heroes instead. Google lead me to nothing on the last verse of this song. I am having a hard time finding a female freedom rider who died, but many women in the civil rights movement died. Look at MOVE. Look at AIM. There are so, so, so, many examples. Please don't be lazy ladies. Provide references or re-write. Many women died of domestic violence, cancer, exposure to radiation in factories, other accident's in factories, as slaves, as Native women, as Asian immigrants. Allot of your lyrics are a stretch. Please, please, back it up or don't waste air time with bullshit and re-write. Except Yola, you are all some pretty basic white chicks. Let's see some diving into the real ugly. Let's not give up at this generalization that just gets you attention because you seem deep. You are all talented women. You can ride on more than the pumpkin spice and uggs card. If it can get played easily in Starbucks, it's not worth a Highwaymen re-write.
Annie Spitz pretty basic white chicks? Your whole comment is ridiculous. It’s music, you’re demanding a bit too much. Write your own historically accurate song and go sing it.
Maybe this will help with you needing meaning for everything. www.npr.org/2019/08/13/750829469/hear-the-highwomens-new-statement-song-highwomen A song may mean something to you and mean something totally different to someone else, so who they sing about could make someone think of their grandmothers and the older generations that forged the way for women to even be able to do what makes them happy.
Are you joking? Your whole comment is ridiculous but I'll just point out 2 things because if you're dumb enough to say such stupid things I wont waste any more of my time than necessary to prove my point. So: You "cried 5 times in 2 days" but dont have any clue what this song is about or the history behind it? "Dont be lazy ladies" ??? Because they did a cover and made it their own?
Annie Spitz, every version, of this song, has different lyrics. Obviously, your knowledge of US history is very limited. Some freedom riders did die because of KKK attacks. Every word, in this song's lyrics, has deep factual meaning.
damon b even though the song was originally written by a man, the most famous version with The Highwaymen wasn’t the original one. So if men can take this song and make their version of it, why not women?
It’s making a place for women whilst paying tribute to musicians they respect highly. Paying tribute to those that came before you has always been welcome and respected in country. The fact that they rewrote a song about men to tell the often untold stories of women is a message in itself and they did a damn amazing job. Jimmy Webb himself gave them his blessing, so what’s your problem?
It's alright I guess but out of the four of them, only Brandi Carlile can actually sing. I'm only referring to the four main people in the group, ladies like Yola are awesome, I love her music. Brandi Carlile should have chosen other people for the group though. Great concept but there's a reason her voice goes above the other three. Just my opinion. 🤷
Someone commented about there being three people in the group and was I referring to Sheryl Crow as the fourth member and that she makes her living as a singer. I only got to read part of it, the part that was visible in the notification because apparently they took it down, so I will just say that I was referring to the four main members of the Highwomen. (look at their interviews and other performances). The main members are: Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby, and Amanda Shires. This is who I was talking about. Yola and Sheryl Crow, who are seen in this performance, are guest performers. The other bone I do have to pick though is that if you are supposed to be supporting women in music, why not have a female band? This video even cuts to Jason Isbell playing guitar for a bit. Are there no good women guitar players in Nashville? Just seems like that would make more of a statement. Again, just my opinion.
@@brookepage8653 I replied and then deleted my comment because I was wrong. When the group formed there was only three but they have four now. Sheryl Crow was also in stage but... You were right about there being four members. I had hoped it wouldn't notify you because no sense in you being "corrected" incorrectly... But RUclips has failed me. But... You were right. :) I liked the singing though, so I'll disagree with you about that. Brandi was amazing but I listen to their rendition of The Chain and they're all amazing. And they were all professional singers before joining this group.
Why? Did you know that the author of the "original song" collaborated with them to write it? So, was the author of the original song disrespectful to himself?
You know the original lyricist helped with the rewrite? So, literally, if you like the original you ... kind of are disrespecting the original author here.
yep. I can’t help but smile when Johnny starts singing “I fly a starship” 🥰 none of these girls will compare. no hate on them it’s just you can’t beat highwaymen:)
It's really a shame that this supergroup didn't get any Grammy nominations. I think the album is fantastic.
Claire Strock they’re not eligible until next year...they’ll get a bunch of noms. I hope.
Agreed.
Claire, Each member is a Grammy winner on their own.
This song is painfully incredible! Like tears to my eyes every time I hear it
Right???
I felt like getting on that freedom bus with Yola. Such a powerful song... such talent from all the women
as a huge fan of the original, this song is just seminal. I don't usually like rewrites but this is an exception. the original writer- Jimmy Webb- blessed this and helped with the writing. the song echos the orignal beautifully. this one is a crushingly powerful performance.
There’s some legit, deep country roots on that stage. Across the board.
How much talent can yo fit on one stage?
Incredible..Amanda leads the way !
The ladies are fantastic but damn, the guitar work in the background is just amazing. Fantastic accompaniment to the ladies’ voices.
That's Amanda Shires' (funky sunglasses) husband Jason Isbell, blues slide guitarist, and Brandi Carlile (red suit)'s longtime band members Phil and Tim Hanseroth :)
Every note, every word, every phrase is perfect.
My very favorite song I love it
Absolutely incredible group...🖤🖤
0:40 damn...
Power. Truth. I hope my daughters hear this.
Connie Baggett I hope EVERYONE hears it, especially at this time.
The haunting lyrics continue.... beautiful rendition!
Beautiful. These ladies deserve more attention.
Love the lyrics! Very cool! Love it! Thanks for sharing!
One of my very favorite songs love this group
Each version has variations in the lyrics.
Wow...amazing!
Powerful!
Garotas maravilhosas🙌
Fuckin Epic!
Love it new twist on on a classic
love these new lyrics!!
Does anyone know who did the rewrite?
Jimmy Webb did the new lyrics
Sam, the rewrite was Carlile, Shires, and Webb. Webb mostly just gave his approval, I believe, as he was the writer of the original.
Thanks guys.
I would have loved to hear her sing this about Erwin.
Beautifully Sung and very cleverly rewritten words so that the song they are actually singing is Highwoman and not the original Highwayman. I just hope they come to London and that C2C get them booked for March 2020.
very good ladies!
Great
Well done!
jason isbell has got one hot ole lady...I love yola's voice
this song can hurt and heal at the same time
great group. great song. I just like that someone coughed on mic around 1:19
Who is the black lady , her voice is awesome
Yola!!

How do you gain respect copying men? Just do your own thing girls
