    Loved the calling-in journal style in the editing/voiceovers. Watching this in the age of quarantine/shelter-in-place and seeing the handshake at 17:09 followed by the words about humanity and goodwill.... made me emotional.

      I may be mistaken, but I believe it is a requirement to call in daily to report your status and location. These seem to be superimposed playbacks of some of those recordings over the video footage. Also, of course, there is all the rider footage and narrative. Either way, it is still a cool effect!

    Hey Aaron, awesome film, thank you so much for sharing this with the community! I have aspirations of through biking the trail which lead me to this video. When I followed the link to the race info it looked like it dropped off in 2019. Is there still a community of racers out there? I'd love to give it a burn! Cheers

    I don't care what anybody says but i would love to cycle through Canada & American rather than England, i love the fact that you guys have desert, forest's, snow and mountains as over her in England yeah we have mountains and forests but mostly frellin mud which don't get me wrong is fun but I would love to cycle through colorado and certainly Mexico with its dry barron lands. Love the fact that you will be fixing punctures in the pouring rain whilst being hunted by a bear or a mountain lion, well i wouldn't but you get my drift off

    I want to do this next year! Looks so hard yet so rewarding. The bikes in this video look like gravel bikes, which makes it even harder. Is there a bike rule for the race? No mountain bikes?

    Wow!! I'd like to fly over from England to ride this next year amazing. I wouldn't be racing it though, my mb racing days were in the 80s.... Probably over 10-15 days to really take it all in... When is the best time of year to ride it, without freezing my nuts off or sweating like a pig😂🍻👍

      I'd imagine Sept is best month. Temp can get cold but definitely no snow and nice temps. I've not done all the trail only the first section and from Kenosha to Breckenridge. Amazing views and solitude if you need it.

    When going for long Mtb rides use mechanical disk brakes. When hydraulic fail it is the end

    • @andyeckel7195
      @andyeckel7195 4 года назад +1

      I somewhat disagree. I’ve always believed a cable failure is much more likely than a piston-caliper failure. Plus you will still have usage of the opposite brake (front or rear).

    I love riding but I did get a sense of sports anxiety from this video. The video is well filmed but I would of liked to hear the main perspective from a different person than a homeless adventurer. His personality and lifestyle kind of taints the idea that anyone could or would like to get involved in this type of race. It left me feeling like "wow, who would want to go on a bike race and walk away with PTSD?" Every time I would hear a contestant say "but I'm having fun" I'm not sure I believe them.

    • @9aaronj
      @9aaronj  4 года назад +2

      It's true, being competitive in these types of races might not be for everyone, but the vast majority of people who do these races (or just bikepacking in general) are from all walks of life and all athletic abilities. Most (if not all) racers hold down full time jobs, have families, and ride bikes because it's fun! Including Jefe, by the way - he works incredibly hard and is a husband and father, on top of his racing - and he lives in a home, believe it or not! :) I tried to include many other perspectives other than Jefe's - hence the extended narration from Neil and Stefan, and all the recorded call-ins - definitely didn't mean to create the false impression that a certain personality or lifestyle would taint the accessibility of these events. As for walking away with PTSD - the fact that many of these racers do multiple events per year, for years on end, should help ease concerns about that! Thanks for watching, hope that clarifies things a bit.

      Aaron Johnson thanks for answering my evaluation in a positive way. I did appreciate your work. It has to be to difficult to sit the fence and capture joy and accomplishment when it walks so closely to suffering. I know the steeper and taller the mountains are, the better the view. The video definitely captures the viewer and is extremely well done. Thanks again!

    • @9aaronj

      @@brianthompson1045 "sit on the fence and capture joy and accomplishment when it walks so closely to suffering" - that's a really good way to put it! Finding that balance is the key to a successful journey. And the suffering seems to fade quickly from memory, but the other emotions don't, which is probably why we always come back for more :)

      Hi Brian. As someone who has done something similar to this in South Africa (see link below), I can assure you there are many people who don't race it. They just go out and 'survive' each day (this describes me). They are people who have 'normal' 9 to 5 lives. While you are out there, there are times you question why you are doing it, but after finishing it, the sense of achievement overides everything else. You certainly don't have to be a 'homeless adventurer' to do this type of riding.
