      @@thealicecameraim really impressed by how this is shaping up especially from a newer more independent company, super cool. the only thing that i could think could be an amazing addition is the option of a log profile/10bit footage in some way. that would make this a super versatile vlogging camera(gopro stabe, high dynamic range, nice colors, mic input, can see yourself in focus with phone, and good autofocus, plus the fact it has a much larger sensor than an action cam)

      This is the update to the Olympus Air that we never got! Super excited to see mirrorless merge with smartphones (with m4/3 lenses too). I've always thought that if they could combine the convenience and computational smarts of a phone with the sensor and lenses of "real" camera, we'd have a sure fire winner of a product. You didn't address the issue of price. I heard way back that the Alice camera was quite pricey. That could put a dampener on things.

    I hope that Alice Camera sees this comment when I say that this absolutely needs a swappable battery (and SD card for that matter). All of the future-proofing firmware updates won't mean a thing if the unit can't stay powered on because the battery degraded over time. And I mean user-swappable battery. Not sending the unit in for service/replacement.
    This also needs strap lugs on both sides of the unit so users have the option to wear it around their neck (rather than limiting it to a wrist strap).

    • @definingslawek4731
      @definingslawek4731 7 месяцев назад +3

      Agreed, It's just blatant spite for the customer. Just like with the pixi. I don't understand how you can be designing a product and you specifically choose to ommit standard features present on all good versions of the thing you're making.

    • @__Lento__
      @__Lento__ 7 месяцев назад +5

      yeah the battery situation is completely unacceptable.
      i can understand the lack of sd slot since you'll be using it with your phone and sending everything to that anyway but there's absolutely no defending the non-replacable battery.

      Please excuse my lack of knowledge: could you please explain to me what would be the difference between Alice and, for example, a camera that allows you to use your cell phone as a monitor? What's the big difference? Thank you very much

    • @r4yker442
      @r4yker442 16 дней назад

      @@MiguelCarino First I would say that you have to use provided app and Alice lacks any tactile controls which are simply faster, you also loose EVF which is a godsent for bright days etc. Etc.
      Main difference is that you slap bigger sensor on the back of your phone and then your phone has to take care of powering it (or charging it's battery), image processing and storage (that means it's going to heat up pretty damn fast) instead of a dedicated device built all around said sensor.

  • @APurpleSpy
    @APurpleSpy 8 месяцев назад +23

    My very first thoughts when i saw this video:
    Battery life of the unit, and what it does to the battery life of your phone
    Viewfinder latency, due to the wireless nature
    Viewfinder quality/compression, due to wireless nature
    Does it connect over wifi? Does this stop you from using regular wifi/mobile networks while connected to the camera?
    Kind of shocked none of this was touched on, it seems like all of this would be make or break for both use of the device and use of your phone with the device. If connecting to the camera stops your phone from being useful as a phone or kills the battery, and the experience as a camera is mediocre due to the display, then this device would fail on all fronts.

    Its a cool concept - but at the end of the day the price is silly. They are pricing this camera at the same level as some of the best four thirds mirrorless camera, but this one can only be used with a phone... If it were $500 it would make more sence, but $1295??? They have priced themselves well above the value of what their intended audience would be willing to pay.

    As an original backer of this project I need to say this, I am very disappointed recently with the company, I am still awaiting a response to my latest emails and queries. The project is way behind schedule and there is a lack of communication from the business.

    Wow, your production quality is superb and your presentation style is so fun and engaging!
    As to the product, Alice is a really interesting concept that could go places, but I would caution that market success will depend on whether autofocus can be made slick and accurate enough to meet non-nerd use cases. Given the pain that Panasonic has endured on this front, it is difficult to be optimistic, but I'd *dearly* love to be proved wrong!

    Thank you for the video about the prototype of the Alice camera. Never heard of it before. We have often talked among friends that there should be a camera that shares its functions with an adapted smartphone, like Alice Camera does. However, we thought that the camera section would be then more compact. The chunky housing gives the impression that the design was planned as the final stage of development. In any case, this Alice concept has more of a future than smartphones with increasingly powerful "AI" cameras but mini sensors.

    Oddly we were talking about using phones as remote controls for cameras earlier in the week. A function I often forget to use on many Lumix - the wet afternoon - when kids were playing "movie makers" one phone was controlling gimbal - other camera and both kids were happy.
    Alice looks like a fun addition - but would like removable storage as I seem to kill sd cards.

It had a macro lens built in to focus on the spinning ground glass. It was a pain and sucked up a lot of light, but it worked!

  • @GraemeBrowning

    I definitely think a well executed merger of traditional camera lenses/lens mounts and the camera software used in phones would be a winning concept. I wouldn't even care that much about whether the app has all the typical manual controls, as long as the automatic behavior produces good results. I just want the easiest experience to get the best looking photos. Today's phones are easy, but they don't have good lenses, while today's cameras have the right lens hardware but the automatic mode software can't compete with what a phone can do.
    It would be awesome if this ends up being the winning combination! I think MFT is the way to go, since the lenses are reasonably sized

Alice isn't the prettiest thing in the world (my EPL-10 is, so I'm spoiled) but it looks well-built and the concept behind it is intriguing. I might have to sign up for this.

    So no physical/mechanical IBIS -- right? Does lens stabilization (Pany/Oly) work OK? Ultimately this camera is still limited by its hardware -- and down the road they would produce new units with more powerful processing -- *BUT* it would be cool if, like with a computer, you can 'migrate' all of your settings and customizations (even the internal AI learning? or installed Alice apps?) from your old Alice camera to your new Alice camera....

    Brilliant video Emily, I'm catching up on this project and wondering how I could cover it. I think as a creator I'd want PDAF (or something as reliable as) and open gate to make me switch to using it regularly, but maybe open gate is already possible or coming in the future. Either way, love your presentation and style - you're so good at this, I think your channel will be huge before long, and deservedly so.

    Size-wise, it actually looks quite chunky: taller than the OM(5?) and G100 you compared it with, and probably deeper too, especially if you whack at phone on the back (which also likely makes the width greater). My main concern with previous iterations of the 'clip a lens mount to your phone' ideas was that the phone mounts looked fairly flimsy and were asking for either the expensive lens or the expensive phone to fall to the ground if you weren't holding the combined unit in both hands. This at least looks like robust mount. Not sure I'd go for the sliders over dials design- one of the things about using a camera is that when you are familiar with it you can adjust various settings without having to root through menus. Open the aperture 4 stops? One dial. Shutter speed? One dial. That said, it does look like a better attempt at this sort of thing than previously.

    This is the way micro four thirds will win the future. Oly and Sony each had a similar attempt years ago. Finally, something revolutionary comes in a mature and well thought-out product.
    I think you are too conservative about your predictions of who this is for. Thank you for the very detailed intro video. Great job explaining all the things users need to know and want to know. The more technical stuff isn't really what people care about anyway.

      Actually the Sony QX1 was well thought through-out... It did however fail due o Sony marketing the QX cameras as a accessory to their Xperia smart phones... While they held like 2% of the market... 😅 The QX1 came with a APS-C sensor but it was possible to mount full frame lenses on it because Sonys cameras uses e-mount.

    • @MicroFourNerds

      The lumix cameras will go to sleep after about 5 mins and disconnect and reconnecting to the app again is a right faff. You can leave the camera always on i suppose but it would drain the battery a lot! On Alice Camera you can wake the camera from the app rather than the other way round so it is much more convenient 😁

    Cautiously optimistic about the Alice camera. It has a few more features that were not in the Olympus Air and the Sony variant. Such an interesting idea. Personally I think I would like this as a stand alone camera with some buttons and dials. But the GH5s sensor in a more compact body is awesome. Gyro stabilization to compensate for the GH5s sensors lack of IBIS and the AI autofocus and “enhance” sounds really cool. If they can get solid in body AI noise reduction to a similar level as something like Topaz, oh boy this would be so cool. Or if the AI could train from my photo reel to know what my wife and kids look like and just lock onto them over any other subjects in frame.

    Very nice video and exciting product! Sony a6700 is already using an AI subject recognition in autofocus btw. And I wonder whether your phone storage will live up to 4K behind the scenes footage being stored on it directly. Hopefully the storage options will be flexible (like putting only stills directly on the phone and keeping footage on the camera...) and maybe the microSD being exchangeable. And I think there will definitely be a mark2 as no CPU will be powerful enough and able to be updated forever etc. And mark 2 will have some dials ;-). But the open source and updateability option still is a very nice and exciting prospect!

    But im not convinced with the size. It should be in the form factor of a panasonic gx800.
    Further more it would be creat to have at least two thumb wheels for apature and shutter speed beside the shutter button. Additionally I would like at least 16 MP for photography.
    This would make it a perfect small camera for e.g. traveling

    I'm intrigued with the possibility of pixel-shift high-resolution becoming available in Alice Camera. Any word on their progress with this?

    • @hustensaftsch0rle997

      There is no possibility for pixel-shift since this would require a hardware-stabilized sensor.

    • @stevebonn3463
      @stevebonn3463 7 месяцев назад

      @@hustensaftsch0rle997 Perhaps that is necessary for tripod mode pixel-shift. But for handheld, it isn't necessary. The variations due to hand movement actually are used to create the shift in pixels.
