Nice video! I use several Canon rangefinders, including an L2, which is like the L3 but has a flash sync connection. They are wonderful cameras. I enjoyed your video and your pictures. Very nice work.
A very nice well done video that just happened to pop-up for me, maybe because I’ve been looking for formation about Canon RF cameras ;-) And, I just received my 1957 Canon L1 last night in the mail. I’ve been a lifelong Leica user, over 50 years and with almost no film use these days I sold all of my film M-series, keeping only a 1940 Leica Barack IIIb for occasional use. But I felt a need for something M-like without the price, and so the L1. And I can say these Canon RF cameras are just great. No, the finder isn’t as bright as a good M, and the ‘fit and finish’ is a step down (still gorgeous), but they are beautifully designed, well built, do the job, and hay I paid all of $70usd for this near mint working example. There are a ton of vintage L39/LTM lenses to use out there that have ‘character’ and a beautiful way to ‘see the world.’ What’s not to like? It’s nice to see and feel your appreciation for your camera, and using it. I’m sure you will have many fine experiences. Enjoy!
Thank you for the video. I very much enjoyed your photos. I use a Canon L3 and find it extremely comfortable and intuitive to use. The Canon lenses are absolutely beautiful. I have owned and used Leica cameras but, do not find I feel any less equipped for photography with the Canon.
Functionality wise, I think the Canon 7 is the closest there is to the Leica experience on a budget. (Of course, minus the looks 😅) I had one and for a period of time it quenched my thirst for rangefinders. It has similar multiple parallax corrected framelines that is projected through a Fresnel lens from the front unlike the Canon P , modern shutter speed dial (Not the spinning and seperated ones from the canon L series) Personally I love my barnack Leica iiif. I much prefer external viewfinders that are bright and uninterrupted view. But the Canon L3 is also a stunner camera, and definitely as capable as Leicas. Great video! Not a lot of videos on 50s Canon rangefinders!
Recently picked up a Canon VL. Almost the same camera than your L3. It's the loveliest camera I own! Currently only shoot a soviet Jupiter-3 50mm f/1.5 on it. I need to get myself a compatible 35mm lens for it. (Sadly the Jupiter 12, which is a great price, does hit something inside and could damage the camera, so I cannot use mine.)
Always remember the camera doesn't take photographs, YOU take the photographs. One day you may own your dream Leica but chances are you will find some of your most treasured photos have come from your Canon L3.
You’re absolutely right! In 2020 I came into some serious money and I bought my dream camera, a custom painted Leica M3 alongside a Leica Sumarit 50mm lens. It is now 2024 and I no longer have that camera. I came to the realization that most photographers do when they get their hands on their dream camera, that realization being: a camera is just a tool. I now use an old Leica barnack which was a mere fraction of my M3 and it has become my favorite tool.
did not watch the video yet, but couldn't agree more with the thumb and the title. I had already a number of rangefinders, and the canons are a great entry point and, actually, they can work fine as a 'end game' for some. If yout think on the quality of some 50mm lenses and that Leica even did the 35mm summicron ASPH also in LTM mount, this is really a good camera
l love range finder cameras. Ever since l owned a Leica M6 a number of years ago That satisfying hardly audible clic instead of the Kerlunk of an SLR. I've recently bought into the Micro 4/3, Olympus, the reason, it is more akin to the range finders of old.... l like small and unobtrusive. To that end you've rekindled my enthusiasm for a real Range Finder, not a Leica, cost too high, but maybe a Cannon of a Nikon.....Thanks for encouraging me to spend money....Greeting from España
The Leica M6 is my dream camera! So expensive though 😮💨 I don’t own any digital Olympus but I have a film one that I love! Maybe I’ll look into micro 4/3 their shutter sound is so nice
@@lisaportinari I'd love to own an M6 again but they are way out of my price range now. l now use a Olympus E-P5 and EL-P8 with a number of different lenses. The E-P5 is especially 'chunky' metal construction, has that quality feel and is reminiscent of range finder design...The only drawer back is the viewing screen.... useless in bright sunlight...but thats common with most digital cameras....
canon p had one , fantastic camera , great for younger people. get one soon , because the word is out.. prices will increase.. nothing wrong with🎉 them at all, fantastic value for money, no electronics to fail solid metal construction.. a high quality item some of canons best engineering and quality construction went into this camera, built in the era which was the pinnacle of camera manufacturing standards..ditto for canon lenses of the day.. the 1.4 50mm is fantastic and the 1.8 runs it close … tip, if you have a higher budget find a vi-l or vi-t they have a few more features..🎉
actually you can find better and cheaper version of this model canon model 7 but with one drawback, it doesnt have hotsoe. but you can modified it using 3d print to make a coldshoe for LM/viewfinder/flash
reality check! The Rfdr spot is not clear, nowhere like Leica M! Not close! The shutter looks terrible.Canon lenses were good but in 50; and 60's. That's long ago... get a SLR like AE-1,Ae-P or AV! Cheaper, easier to focus lenses are better..
Some lovely images from this camera, the autumn light looks so good!
@lisaportinari ahaaa.... a photography couple. Wonderful :-) Subbed. 🙌👋Super video and photos. So good.

I have both and actually prefer the L3 haha. It’s smaller and more compact! Maybe I’ll do a video comparing the two soon 😄

Yes 🙌
You have time to work up to a Leica! I have used a Canon P successfully for 6 years before I got my Leica M4. Nice photos, you have a good eye!
Thank you John, really appreciate your comment!

Hi Lisa. I am wondering how many people have gone over to George's channel and grassed you up for nicking his camera :-)))
😂
Nice and enjoy, there will be time for Leica.
Currently manifesting a Leica M6 🙏

There’s no need to get agitated, I’m always open to discussions 😄 For 5% the price of a Leica set up, these trade offs are worth it imo
