The best video I've seen so far of anyone who has used this little camera. It's so refreshing to see someone just using the camera, rather than having to listen to some gear-head photography bro droning on about specs and price tags. The best pictures I've seen from it as well. Many would believe you if you told them those shots were taken on 35mm. Those desert shots are beautiful.
I applaud Pentax for taking the risk and putting out such a nice camera. At first the price seemed to high, but then I thought about how film photographers have really benefited from the second hand market and have never had to buy a new film camera. Back in the day, cameras were not cheap, we had plenty of film and labs to have them developed in, now that infostructure is gone. Things are going to cost more. $500.00 is reasonable and glad we have this today! Thanks Pentax!

A sweet spot for a casual camera for when we don’t want to shoot 120 on a tripod and think about metering. But yeah, it does feel like there is a lot of toxicity out there about the P17. I think a lot of it is gatekeeping. They want to feel special, and don’t want anyone who isn’t experienced enough to source and maintain a used Canon Demi or Olympus Pen to enter the world of film. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if this often takes better pictures than some vintage models, the meter is better and many old half frame were also scale focus. I think it’s less about the Pentax 17 not having the right specs for them, and more about the fact that new users can easily buy and use it. Between this and the GRiii with the built-in diffusion filter, Ricoh/Pentax has a pair of hits. The toxic jerks can stay mad while Pentax becomes more relevant than it’s been in years.
@@thebitterfig9903 It is really funny how so many of the critics are acting like zone focus and half-frame = toy. I just received this camera as a birthday gift. It feels great in hand, and it's a lot smaller than I thought it would be. Since I've never shot a half frame camera or used zone focus, I will also leave the camera in auto mode for at least the first 2-3 rolls.
Thank you for this. It's such a joy to watch your videos. I really miss driving in utah and this took me back. I just got into film in 2023 with a pen f after a decade of photography. Thanks very much for taking the time of taking us to Utah with you and presenting this lovely camera. I bought one in addition to my large collection of digital and film and I m very happy with it. Result are extremely good and this is really fun to shoot. Cheers
For most camera nerds, this is a camera that defies logic. Most of us already have too many cameras, yet seeing this one makes you want to get one. But of all of the videos I have seen, nobody has done the most important: the smell test 😁 What does a new camera smell like? We all know the sweet machine-oil smell of the old ones. We know the disappointing smell of the 90's SLR's. But what about this one?
I have the Pentax 17 and funnily enough, the first thing I did when I unboxed it was do a smell test. And honestly, It just smells like a brand new digital camera or lens. There isn't a strong smell coming from it. There is a distinct plastic smell when you open the film door, but the smell mostly reminds me of a new Pentax lens. The Pentax 17 is made in Ricoh's Vietnam factory where the Pentax lenses and Ricoh GRiii are made, so the materials used in those are probably the same materials used in the 17...

I like the idea of the camera. Sure, it's more than I'd like but I'd like to think I understand that the economics of such a camera aren't simple. Nice video introduction to it. I'm looking forward to more.
I have made a playlist of all your chill photography videos, and seriously, it's the calmest and coziest thing to watch. I'm glad they sent you the camera! Thanks for sharing.
I became a pro using the original Olympus Pen-S! Front page of Africa's largest newspaper! Front page, across 5 colums! 1/2 frame fits photo paper better than 35 F.F. I made 8x12" and as big as 16x20"! Sure grain, it was Tri-X old and Rodinal. Many testers don't like the camera! Almost nobody liked the 1st Leica! I think though regarding price, a good Nikon, Canon, Pentax SLR used, with a few lenses, a better way! Great Video.
This was a great video, I do relise we are looking at edited scans but exposures look nice, I've had pretty mixed feelings about the settings and controls on this camera, but do realise this is a camera for a different market than I belong too, I could see myself shooting it, I just couldn't see myself spending that kind of money, on that kind of camera. It is definitely a fantastic price for a Brand new Film Camera, that almost anyone could pick up and get great exposures with. ❤
Whether one likes the camera or not it is at least encouraging that Pentax has manufactured a brand new film camera. There must be some confidence in the market place regarding the use of film. Hopefully it will lead to more take up of analogue photography, more film choice and lower prices. Personally I think it’s an intriguing, inspirational offering giving the newbie ( + enthusiast & pro ) to shoot 35mm film economically in a really handy form factor.
It would be more encouraging to me, if pentax was not completely stuck in the past. I mean, who`s really going to buy this, it`s just a toy. You can`t compete with a toy. Pentax is doing poorly. And it seems they don`t care.
@@brugj03 ; how so? Pentax is owned by Ricoh. Do you not think they’ve seen a change in the market regarding a resurgence in film photography ? Why would they throw good money after bad on a product if they didn’t think there was a market for it. It’s a business. As far as regarding it as a toy, it really depends on what you do with it. A talented photographer will produce good images regardless. Ever heard the term “ all the gear and no idea “. Perhaps if Pentax had put “pro” on the camera your attitude would be different?
@@robnewton3368 No, pro doesn`t mean a thing to me. My thing is that i can clearly see that film is just at fad. It`s cumbersome, low quality, non shareable and very expensive. It doesn`t have any advantages over digital. In fact i can make any digital photo easily look this bad. Personally, i think Pentax has lost their minds to make this. They are already far behind and introduce this toy.
Idk if I can agree. Ive been shooting film for years and each year, the prices have just been getting INSANE. Even if you develop and scan on your own. Straight....up.....INSANE. With the surge of film prices still rising, I honestly don't believe Pentax made the right move here. More people will have to bow out of the film game soon. All of these "hipster" popular youtube film photographers are sponsored and get these cameras/lenses/film stocks/scans for free or at extremely discounted prices. Us commoners however, it burns a serious hole in our pockets. Ive been turning to more vintage digi apsc sensor cams lately and honestly, nobody can ever tell the difference of it being film shots or not. It's wayyyyyy cheaper and still gives you that film vibe
@ : Well..if you still like shooting film and still want to shoot film, Ricoh/Pentax are saying here’s a (new) tool to do it with. There’s a recent interview with a Ricoh representative speaking about the camera market and how difficult it’s becoming attracting new customers to DSLR’s. This looks to be true across this whole segment of the industry.. Ricoh has identified an area where there is growth. Rollei have just brought out the 35af. You may see more companies do this if there’s real momentum behind a film resurgence. Hopefully prices will come down, it’s what’s stopping me from shooting film. It would be nice as I still have my film cameras sitting idle.
I love this video - you have such a nice relaxed way of taking photos - great images from this camera This little camera reminds me of my Canonet 28- a great camera for street photography Thanks for the video ❤
my only concern before the camera released was how zone focusing was going to hold up on a modern camera but after its been out for awhile Ive seen how beautiful the images are! This seems like a great camera overall!
Hi, first of all I can't afford the camera at the moment for certain reasons that are not relevant here, but I have eyes in my head, listen carefully and can see when a brand new camera can cause a wave. I am registered in several photo forums, on several Discord servers that are all about photography etc. Before the camera came out, but before the first pictures and information were leaked, there was a huge outcry of indignation from many photo enthusiasts who realized that the camera didn't fit into their wish list instead of waiting for the first photos and testimonials. Then came the first videos from photo influencers with meaningful results and the first negative voices died down. Then came the first results and testimonials from those who were not swayed by the clamor of outrage and the clamor flattened and flattened and flattened. And now the first of the former screamers have also picked up this camera and are having the time of their lives, sometimes behaving like little children who got what they wrote on their wish list to Santa Claus for Christmas. Of course, there are still a few incorrigible cholerics, but even they are becoming fewer and fewer. So Pentax and Ricoh have done everything right and I wouldn't give a damn about the crap from the latest screamers. Greetings from Germany
Exactly what I've seen too in the community. I've seen plenty of sharp photos and a solid A3-size print from this little camera. Expect nothing and appreciate everything.
Those desert shots are so good! Love em! I’m so envious of that kind of landscape, the browns of the land go so well together with the blues and whites if the sky. Where I live it’s just green everywhere.
I was also near Pine Valley the day of that small fire and saw you on the side of the row. I wondered if that was you, from Moment and Graincheck. Guess I was right! Small world.
There is a slot to park the dark slide of the RB67 on the left of its body. That Pentax is a great photographer’s camera because it seems to let you stay in the moment. The lens is incredibly good!
Awesome review and incredible locations to try it out. Had been waiting for your take on it! Looks like it survived the sand storm as well.. I would probably shoot 24 exp rolls in it just so that I would get through the shots!
Great video! Instead of a sterile review I really like a video where I see the camera actually being used! I'm very happy I discovered your channel from your trip to Spain! 😁
Film cameras in good condition are becoming more expensive. I was on a trip to Europe and none of the stores had acceptable options. With how much used ‘very good’ condition cameras cost these days, It made me wish 35mm full frame cameras were still being made. I went for a Nikon FA with 50mm 1.4 nikkor and rear door and seals had to be replaced, which is what I did as soon as I got home, and I ended up spending 700 euros all in all including accessories, but wish I gave that up for a new-new camera in 2024.
i think i started first following you because you are from Portland, like me, but of course ive stayed for the good vibes and beautiful photos. I do have a question if you dont mind me asking. I know you have a small child, (I have two toddlers myself) .. I always wonder how you are able to get away to these beautiful spaces, so often.. Thats the one thing i miss is just being unattached and just going to a place for the sake of shooting. I of course have a great partner, but we both work full time and i feel bad jetting off to have fun and exiting family life. and of course its always hard to get the shot with a couple toddlers in toe. Just curious how you manage family life, and work and sunny 16 and all the travel. and maybe if you have any tips :)
Cool! I don't think this camera is for me, I'll stick with the OM-1. But your video style is always a pleasure to watch😊 thanks for making them and have a nice day!
It’s a tempting buy for sure. Lovely to see somebody taking a risk and making a new film camera when digital is so dominant now. I have a Pentax MV that I’m using but it would be nice to have one of these just to stick a roll of HP-5 and just go crazy with it. I think the combo of half frame and a cheap and iconic stock like that would be a very economical way to enjoy film photography on a budget ❤.
Great video! Working through the first roll on mine! I've shot a lot of the "pro" cameras that are popular (Leica R8, Nikon F3, Mamiya C330, Minolta Alpha 9 etc), and the thing I like about half frame is I don't feel the pressure to get the perfect image all the time. People forget that if you watched a movie prior to 1996, you were watching half frame film!
The private sandstorm show in that landscape was wild. The 17 is a bit like an Olympus Pen W (from _way_ back) but with auto exposure (and a flash). Building mechanical things in 2024 is a difficult endeavour so this is cool to see.
Another great video Taylor! This camera seems to trigger some folks 😂🤦🏽♂️ I can see myself using this camera around my family. I’d love the 72 frames for simple casual shooting.
You are really good at making videos! What I like about the Pentax 17: The look and form factor. The fact that it's half frame. What I want it to have: Fully manual controls and a mirror box for through the viewfinder focus. Actual F stops. A faster lens. I really just want a half frame modern K1000.
Very nice video. Well done. I gave up film about a year ago. I was raised on black and white photography. It would be nice to see how a half frame camera handles Tri-X film. Thank you for your hard work. Hi from Sandpoint, Idaho USA.
Wow, wonderful Light, Colors and Landscapes. 10:57 It looks as if on the rock in the foreground, beings were sitting and making themselves comfortable there. The PENTAX 17 is a good One.
I wish Pentax/Ricoh much success with the Pentax 17. For me there are two deal breakers, 1) Half frame, and 2) Zone focusing. I guess a third deal breaker would be the price. You can buy a lot of incredible "like new" well built used film cameras for the price. For example: You can buy a mint Nikon F5 for under $400.
Oh my goodness it's been such a long time since I've watched someone rewind a roll of film. However, I was surprised you weren't sure when you reached the end of the roll. Does the 17 not have a frame counter? Also, I'd recommend investing in a changing bag for loading and unloading rolls of film. They're really cheap (well they used to be) and prevent light leakage onto your undeveloped film.
You got some nice shots there, on the 17 and in the Video! There are some great shots over in the area of Flaming Gorge, River and Buttes have similar views like horseshoe bend, but less traveled. Thank you for a nice video.
Your video was as enjoyable as the shots that you posted from the camera. I am not asking this question as a slight to your skills, I am wondering if those great pictures are straight out of the camera or have been post production enhanced. They are stunning and I will be looking at this platform if they are un-edited. Stunning scenery for the backdrop. Thanks
I very, very rarely comment on a video here. I just had to say that I found your style of presentation exquisitely inspiring and soothingly poetic. You shoot fearlessly and that's how I want to be. I doubt that I'll ever tried this camera, but your video makes me want to get out and shoot with my Yashica 124G and my Fujifilm XE1. Thank you for sharing your insights.
I’m going to guess your poor car’s windows are pitted like a night sky of a million stars after that sandstorm! Thanks for sharing the new 17 and your adventures trying it out - I applaud Pentax for giving photography a new film camera in 2024.
Just discovered your channel through this video. Really nice storytelling, shots, the "vibe" the tempo. You got yourself a new sub! Great work, keep it going!
thanks for the real life review, your video make me really tempting to get this little buddy on my arsenal but the problem is i already own good old pen-ft for decades so im not sure :)
How is called the thing you use to record yourself with the camera? I think its some kind of snorricam, but if you could tell me which exactly, LOVED the shots.
I didn't think about the economy of film on a half frame until just now near the end of this video. Great point. I also get that portrait is kind of the new normal but I'll always be on my landscape shit.
Utah Rocks! What a nice Dome accommodation! Looks like you have been using that camera for years! I guess 36ex roll film is good for you! Most important fact of that camera is the in the next 10 years at least, your camera will be repaired properly to factory specs!
Your video skills are so impressive I subscribed just from the bit where you filmed your car driving away at a distance through Utah. I need to see more stuff like that.
Great video love the images..Own a Oly Pen F but might consider this as well. Come shoot North Dakota it's Legendary..

Loved the flash shot by the fountain! I wish they went with a film window on the back, I tend to forget what I loaded with 36 shots, neverind 72 😅 But I'm a fan, will definitely get one in the future.
You can put the cardboard endpiece of the film box into a slot on the back of the camera I believe, something I do with my medium format cameras always so it's routine for me.

@@oudviola Sure, sure, I just don't always have an appropriate box with me when starting a roll - for example when traveling - I leave the boxes off so the film takes up less space. But that's my fault for not being organized (the forgetting part, I mean). The window seems like a curious omission, but it's not like it's a dealbreaker 😀 Still is just a nitpick,
The flash looks great, loved that one shot you took with it. I literally just picked up an Olympus XA2 so can't justify getting this right now, but the quality looks great, and super impressive if most were taken in Auto mode. Great video!
How can you NOT get that depth of focus ... with a 25mm lens? That's one of the problems with this camera: Every shot will have that depth of focus. No nicely blurred backgrounds in portrait shots. No creative focus on the area you, the photographer, want to highlight. This Pentax strikes me as being an analog cell phone camera.
@@rogerb5615 Seems like a great option for everyday carry or casual street work. I’m guessing that folks who want to take things a step beyond phone cameras will love this, as well.
Great video as always! Would love to see you doing "Diptychs" in future with the Pentax 17 - Searching for some inspiration currently :) Cheers from Germany.
i would have thought it would make more sense since there are 36shots in a roll of film "ignoring the 24 rolls" that they would have gone with pentax 18 since 18x2 =36 where as 17x2 =34, if they are referring to the 35mm camera they should have gone with 17.5 ;) LOL.. ahhh well, hope you have fun with it :)
I think the frame size is 17x24mm Vs. 36x24mm of a 'full frame' 35mm. Most half frame cameras aren't quite exactly half; I have an old Mercury II that is about 20x25mm for some obscure reason.

@@theangrymarmot8336 yeah but respectfully you can’t use your personal experience to justify that because I can just as easily use my experience and the people I’ve interacted with whom I know have bought old working cameras that still work after years of use
The bouncy deer tho! 🥹 Awesome photos per usual!
I love this video - you have such a nice relaxed way of taking photos - great images from this camera
This little camera reminds me of my Canonet 28- a great camera for street photography
Thanks for the video ❤
my only concern before the camera released was how zone focusing was going to hold up on a modern camera but after its been out for awhile Ive seen how beautiful the images are! This seems like a great camera overall!
That photo of the dunes in the wind.... 🤜💥🤛
Amazing scenery and the camera looks really great
That small abandoned gas station is in my hometown of Circleville! Love to see it get some spotlight
the landscape shot from your dash of the you by the three big turn arrow signs was so sick
I was on chilling mode here, thanks for the reminder of taking a snack, made it better! Awesome photos and video tks!
the one with flash of the people at the fountain is nice, and the candid of those ladies smoking was cool!
After a few seconds in I actually forgot it was a camera review, that speaks great of your videos and also the little camera. Thank you Taylor.
I'm so in love with the photos and also, the Pentax looks like a perfect fun camera. I'm totally going to start saving for one!
Well done, thanks for taking us along. I love the photos and look forward to buying this camera.
Came here for the 17, stayed for the landscapes. 🥰
Estupendo reportaje de la Pentax 17 y buena composición de las fotos. Un saludo.
i think i started first following you because you are from Portland, like me, but of course ive stayed for the good vibes and beautiful photos.
Very cool, idk about the half-frame. but with film so expensive maybe that's a good thing lol
Cool!
I don't think this camera is for me, I'll stick with the OM-1. But your video style is always a pleasure to watch😊 thanks for making them and have a nice day!
Tay, thanks for the review and I love the photos!
Building mechanical things in 2024 is a difficult endeavour so this is cool to see.
very impressive, especially the landscape snaps!
Another great video Taylor! This camera seems to trigger some folks 😂🤦🏽♂️ I can see myself using this camera around my family. I’d love the 72 frames for simple casual shooting.
Those dust storms where beautiful 😍
You are really good at making videos!
What I like about the Pentax 17: The look and form factor. The fact that it's half frame.
What I want it to have: Fully manual controls and a mirror box for through the viewfinder focus. Actual F stops. A faster lens. I really just want a half frame modern K1000.
1:51 i like the setup of the camera
Very nice video. Well done. I gave up film about a year ago. I was raised on black and white photography. It would be nice to see how a half frame camera handles Tri-X film. Thank you for your hard work. Hi from Sandpoint, Idaho USA.
Your channel is one of the hidden gems on RUclips.❤
Wow, wonderful Light, Colors and Landscapes. 10:57 It looks as if on the rock in the foreground, beings were sitting and making themselves comfortable there. The PENTAX 17 is a good One.
What an incredible place to visit. Great photos Tay!
I like your trip and use of this camera. Amazing.
I wish Pentax/Ricoh much success with the Pentax 17. For me there are two deal breakers, 1) Half frame, and 2) Zone focusing. I guess a third deal breaker would be the price. You can buy a lot of incredible "like new" well built used film cameras for the price. For example: You can buy a mint Nikon F5 for under $400.
yes! It is new! The price formidable.
But look at the pictures it can make and how well it performs. The results belie your considerations.
@@charleyfolkes what innovation?
That horse is a fucking MODEL lol! Dude was posing!
Interesting camera, I particularly like the on the road shots.😎
Thats a most beaultiful camera i ever see!! Hi from BRAZIL!!!
Oh my gosh! I love how outgoing you are asking if you can take pictures of people because I’m an introvert and I won’t ever do it 😂
What an amazing video!! Such a good review of the camera it made want to go out to the desert and just enjoy the scenery. Love your work!!
You got some nice shots there, on the 17 and in the Video!
There are some great shots over in the area of Flaming Gorge, River and Buttes have similar views like horseshoe bend, but less traveled. Thank you for a nice video.
You became the best ! U r vids are awesome since a year or 2 !
Love from France 😉
Great photos!!
I've been waiting for your review on this film camera. Thank so much with the great photos.
Thanks
Have the same question.
These have definitely been edited. And it all depends on how they were scanned as well
great video , very interesting, great little camera, fantastic photos, Pentax has made some fine film cameras in the past, ....LONG LIVE FILM
Watch the filmed parts, they`re much better than the stills. Long live Digital.
Lovely photos!
I bought one of these cameras and am very much enjoying it and the photos it takes. Subscribing to your channel because of the Mets! 😊
I’m going to guess your poor car’s windows are pitted like a night sky of a million stars after that sandstorm! Thanks for sharing the new 17 and your adventures trying it out - I applaud Pentax for giving photography a new film camera in 2024.
Nice review Taylor, looks like you had fun! 😀
Just discovered your channel through this video. Really nice storytelling, shots, the "vibe" the tempo. You got yourself a new sub! Great work, keep it going!
Wow-loved this review! It’s not for everyone, but I think by the end of the year I will pick one up. Gotta support Pentax Film Camera Project.
thanks for the real life review, your video make me really tempting to get this little buddy on my arsenal but the problem is i already own good old pen-ft for decades so im not sure :)
Your videos are the coolest !
Keep on shooting on !
Thanks
Tommy.
Your video skills are so impressive I subscribed just from the bit where you filmed your car driving away at a distance through Utah. I need to see more stuff like that.
I’m amazed by all your B-Roll. Amazing!
Great video love the images..Own a Oly Pen F but might consider this as well. Come shoot North Dakota it's Legendary..
Loved the flash shot by the fountain!
I wish they went with a film window on the back, I tend to forget what I loaded with 36 shots, neverind 72 😅
But I'm a fan, will definitely get one in the future.
The window seems like a curious omission, but it's not like it's a dealbreaker 😀
Still is just a nitpick,
I hear you!
The flash looks great, loved that one shot you took with it. I literally just picked up an Olympus XA2 so can't justify getting this right now, but the quality looks great, and super impressive if most were taken in Auto mode. Great video!
That picture of the horse! 🥹
Hi! Your scans was edited? 🤔 Nice place! Remember rocks from "old village" here in Brasil...
What a neat little powerhouse! I’m shocked that you got such deep focus on both the barbed wire and the mountains in the distance. Nice work.
Wtf I love how you did this video, it's so great. Subscribed.
I now have an urge to look through my back issues of Arizona Highways.
Great video as always! Would love to see you doing "Diptychs" in future with the Pentax 17 - Searching for some inspiration currently :) Cheers from Germany.
This would be a great everyday camera with the portra 400 or fuji 400
half of the price to get 72 shots but definitely more than half of the quality!
that’s what i’m thinking 🤔
@@tristandu1776 I was thinking shooting Ektar with it's fine grain might be better suited for a camera like this
@@dflf I shoot indoors and at night a lot, but would definitely try the Ektar on a sunny summer day!
You are a really good photographer.
Stunning for a new half-frame camera. Looks like it excels way past Kodak's new-ish H35 camera
Came for the camera stayed for the channel.
i would have thought it would make more sense since there are 36shots in a roll of film "ignoring the 24 rolls" that they would have gone with pentax 18 since 18x2 =36 where as 17x2 =34, if they are referring to the 35mm camera they should have gone with 17.5 ;) LOL.. ahhh well, hope you have fun with it :)
I think the frame size is 17x24mm Vs. 36x24mm of a 'full frame' 35mm. Most half frame cameras aren't quite exactly half; I have an old Mercury II that is about 20x25mm for some obscure reason.
Great shots in the sand storm!
